- In this quick look review I consider the contents of the recently tooled Airfix P-51D in 1/48 scale. There are a host of other P-51 kits out there, so how does this offering stack up?

Hence forth let your pilot be known as ‘Gammy’.😉 Anyway, I’ve said it before and I shall say it again: I love your channel. I love the way you present yourself, how you let your knowledge of modelling come across with no ego. You teach, yes, but as a modeller, not a superior. All very calming and fun. Don’t change Jenn. All the best. Simon
One of the best kits I've built. Went together like a charm.
Looking forward to the next build series.
Great news! I have now ordered the same kit, and I will follow along with the build.
So looking forward to following along with you building this one. Never built a mustang before and never attempted a silver finish so a couple of good learning points i hope to pick up from watching your build instruction.
I managed to get the self same kit and, as you say, for the price i think well worth purchasing. What was also nice was an additional Loyalty Discount that was taken off my order so i was very pleased with what i received versus what i paid.
Will keep an eye open for the start of the build.
Tony
I was lucky enough to get the same boxing from Models for Sale, ready to build along!
Fantastic ! Having recently been to see the real plane at Bottisham museum i'm really looking forward to building mine along with you.
Fun fact: Scheme A is US Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s Great-Grandson. 😮
I love these Mustang kits. They’re the only ones on the market in 1:48 with the complete “Meredith effect” radiator ductwork.
Great video, thank you! looks like a nice kit
Excellent view as always Jenn.I liked very much the F-6a Mustang which would have and i would like a presentation of it as all the Allison engined Mustangs and the reconnaissance variants of the Mustang because the modelling benches are full of P-51 bs and ds.
Great review, looking forward to the build. Many thanks 👍
This boxing is arguably the best value boxing of the Airfix D Mustang as you can build ANY wartime Mustang without extras. (It is a filletless D-5 production version but has both styles of added finfillet in the box - The standard factory fitted fillet and the Field Modification (Called the "Swayback") which has a Very slight curve fron the fin to the spine. All that is needed for the K is the Aeroproducts propeller, and a Post war Mustang had the Cuffless Hamilton Standard propeller - Both are available in the P-51D/K or the F-51D boxings.) I have 7 Airfix P-51D's and 5 Eduard kits of the same aircraft, Including the "Iwo Jima" VLR version with the supersized Droptanks and the F-6D (Recon) version. Currently looking forewards to the P-51B & C from Eduard....
Great info, Thanks Brett
Which is better Brett? AX or ED. Pricewise very similar here in NZ....
Another great review! Thanks for that! :)
1994...giggle,giggle!😄 What would be a Airfix kit without a curious mishap.😸 Love it!
I recently picked up a couple of the new tooled Airfix 1/48 Bristol Bulldogs, you definitely need to get one of them!
Most excellent video as always! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
Yes, I'd like to. I have fond memories of building the old and smaller Airfix Bulldog some years back, it's a very handsome aircraft.
💪🏻💪🏻
Not my scale but I will happily follow along, I just really enjoy your modelling style.
Lovely... now I have to try and find one here for reasonable money :). Nice review, and looking forward to the build.
A comprehensive review and an enjoyable one at that. 👍👌 Unbiased and sensible too. You make many valid points about this kit but ultimately, as you said, for 20 quid, why wouldn't you? (Unless you've spent far too much this year already! ) 😮
I'm an Airfix fan, since I was a kid, and you don't expect Armahobby, Tamiya or Eduard quality at that price. Although, their kits of late are increasingly excellently detailed and moulded.
I'm really looking forward to you building this Jen! Hopefully not too long to wait?
Thanks for posting.
Bobby
Not long at all, I will be making a start within the next couple of weeks
@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft fantastic! 👍😁
That's good news Jen. I will be watching this build with great interest. I have the same kit in my stash, not yet commenced. It's actually the papier maché box version courtesy of the German Post Office that decided to deliver it in a leaking U-Boat, but I believe the plastic is still buildable and the instructions have been dowloaded from Scalemates! 😆
You got to watch that U-Boat delivery service, very unreliable I've heard!
Thanks for your video Jen. BTW it does say Cartograf on the kit box.
I have just bought this Mustang boxing from one of my local model shops so maybe I will build along with you. I was very kindly given a 20% discount on my purchase as our IPMS club meets in the same town and that meant I only paid a little more than you. Believe it or not we have five specialist model shops in our Somerset local area, I have cycled to four of them. There's a sixth shop a little further away in Frome. All a bit amazing really!
I have also got the Tamiya 51D and several Eduard examples but the Airfix one still appeals to me as one worth building.
Ahem *clears throat* the decals are by Cartograf everyone! Yes, the south west does seem to be blessed when it comes to proper model shops, I need to get down to Frome myself at some point.
I bought a Tamiya P-51 in 1/48, simply to get the 4X4 Jeep for a diorama. So I will follow your build of the Airfix kit and see if I can transfer your tips and techniques to a different brand. Cheers!
Absolutely! The specifics of building this kit will not apply, but the techniques certainly will
When are you going to do this kit? I need to order my kit.
I'll be starting on it in the next few weeks
why do you need shiny and smoothe , when the first thing your gonna do is spray it with matt primer ?
Good question. Basically, it saves a lot of effort smoothing the plastic, either before primer, or with primer. The shine is irrelevant, the smoothness is what's important. Because this model will be finished using silver finishes, it's something that will get talked about a lot - I might even try and find a few rougher parts to paint to visually show the difference.
I must admit, this was third choice for me out of the kits for the starter build but as I've at least 5 different boxings of this kit in the stash it's still one I'll be on board for, this review has made me want to have a crack at it as well. I'm particularly keen to see how you handle the masking and painting of the Lou IV colours which is a great scheme but painting it has always put me off. Will you be doing it in green as Airfix suggest or the blue that some people believe it was?
I will be doing it blue, because that's what I see when I look at the pictures .... also it will look cool lol
@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraftgreat news as that's what I was going to go with too. You said the build will begin when you've got some bits and pieces in, can you post somewhere what extras you'll be using on this build so I can get in anything that I might need to build along? Cheers, looking forward to this build.
@@danwood3137 I will post an intro video this week, showing all the parts I'm going to use (basically just waiting for them to arrive)
Could anyone tell me a good place to buy RAF pilot figures in America. New at this and having a hard time finding them. 1/72 & 1/48. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not something I know unfortunately, but hopefully one of the Americans will come along with some useful info!
Eduard weekend is c.£19.00, it gets my cash
Definitely a brilliant buy at that price!
Oh well, we'll have the Mustang then...
No harm done. 🙂
There's more, patience *winks*
