Sprue tour: Airfix P-51D Mustang 1:72 Starter set

Welcome to the channel and another sprue tour, and something a little bit different for me. This is a starter set from Airfix, designed for the junior or new modeller, I thought it will make a nice comparison against the upcoming Eduard and Arma kits, clearly this isn't designed to go head to head but I thought it would be interesting to see how nice it is.

Looks ok, just finishing the Spitfire starter kit as my first model for over 45 years and so far it's turned out not to bad, just the decals and canopy to do!!!

That's a surprise, I thought that was going to be the plastic mouldings from Airfix's earlier P-51D boxings A01004 and A01004A. This issue is simplified by having fewer parts. I notice that the starter set main landing gear looks much sturdier than the earlier issues which is no bad thing, I found the legs rather weak when I built one of the old ones. Despite looking good overall the old kit does also have one or two other difficult aspects which could well put off a newcomer.

The shadow stand is a cool addition, it would be nicer to mold the upright holding the plane in clear. But I guess even a novice could watch a how to vid and replace it themselves.

Some prefer clear, some prefer opaque...

Airfix are coming on in bounds and bounds. They seem to be doing some very good stuff completely across their range. I wonder if the panel lines are a little bolder as they are expecting the painting to be by brush rather than an airbrush.
Anyway, great review and maybe the challenge should be to build it with only what came in the box.
