I'm so glad to have lived long enough to see major advances in human civilization. A man walking on the moon, the falling of the Berlin Wall, the explosion of the information age, a possible cure for cancer, and the guitar playing of Kent Nishimura.
This is hands-down, the most beautiful arrangement I've ever heard of this song.
Agree. To me its even the best arrangement of ANY song here in youtube.
Kent is magical !!! Absolutely beautiful... I hope he makes a CD !!!!!
@@cindipossidento5688 Kent has already released 3 solo fingerstyel guitar instrumental albums since his first album "First Step" was out at his age of 12 in 2015, although this song is not recorded for the 3 albums. Please check his "Music" page on his website below.
www.kentnishimura.online
I have this arrangement. Message me on Facebook: Ruben Balotol III and my profile is the same as my RUclips
I would have to agree. Incredible..
I've never seen a guitarist with the musicality of Kent. I never thought I'd never have the oppurtunity to sse him live. He's coming to Canada! This is one happy Irish man going to see him in Montreal. What a musician.
here is what make Kent different from other young guitarist on RUclips (including Sungha ):
- many folks play so well and make me very impressed with their technical skills, precision, rhythm, percussion, etc.
But Kent's performance somehow makes me forget about those technical aspects, but somehow gives me joy.
it could be that he has covered the known songs - so the brain is more in sync and can guess what will come next.
Or it could be that he keeps his style simpler enough ( and not too technical ).
I realize that he does not try to show off, he keeps it simple, he could just play for fun. His song is also versatile too. True artist, not just RUclipsr.
I just like Kent's style and his sneaky capo slides.
How deeply moving is this?--what a tribute to legendary R&B singer-songwriter-producer James Ingram after the latter's passing in Jan. 2019 at nearly 67 years of age. In Oct 2019, the 16.5-year-old Kent releases this fantastically adept arrangement of Ingram's classic first hit song, "Just Once." Oh Kent, you are indeed a gift to mankind, some kind of heaven-sent angel!
As a guitar player of 40 years, I am sick to my stomach.....This kid is freaking amazing. No words.
and he's what...17 ?...at 17 I was just starting to play a C chord cleanly.
He has to be one of the top musicians in the world. He’s not just learning to play guitar covers, many of the songs he does don’t even have much of a guitar effect.
Millennials are....
damn lol I'm just playing guitar for 5 months now I'm 17 too, And I think I can't do that kind of cool shit lol
@@Sky-yy8bg it will take many years to have this kind of level. And you have 60% chance to made it😂😂
driving me nuts. I haven't quite figured it out. I just can't take it anymore. Is there really no dubbing?
And the fact that he was only about 17 when he recorded this! Amazing!
This man is the Leonardo da Vinci of guitar. I hope we all realize how lucky we are to have been born during Kent's time on Earth.
I can't stop listening to Kent's tunes. His arrangements are so addictive. I am sure I am not the only one with his playlist on constant replay!
I'm with you
Chilling with friends, studying, in the car, always listening Kent
You’re not alone! And I feel the same. No need to go into details
I hear ya loud and clear... same.
im with you bro
James Ingram is smiling down from Heaven at you Kent.
Oh wow I’ didn’t know he passed. No wonder I haven’t heard that 1 in a million voice😟
when did he passed away?
I've seen numerous guitarist with the same percussive fingerstyle but with more complex techniques and crazy speed etc, sure they're amazing with the technique but holy shit nobody comes close to Kent's musicality! I will learn this arrangement, don't care if it takes me 5 or 10 years. It's just too beautiful
I am blessed to be living in the time of Kent Nishimura.
Play 0:46 at .25x speed and follow along as I point out all the craziness that's happening:
- starts out with 3 harmonic taps, very quickly and accurately played with a really nice ring
- follows up with the thumb chuck and thumb baseline pluck (2 different beats played by 1 thumb right after each other, i can't even...)
- then does a pulloff and hammerdown on the left hand index finger (and it sounds super clean) (0:47)
- the right hand 2nd and 3rd finger then plays both main melody and off beat accents while the thumb is still chucking to the beat (0:48-0:50)
- follows again with the thumb chuck and baseline pluck but adds in a hammerdown with the left index. Just insane how perfect the voicing is (0:51)
And that my friends was 5 seconds of the song, and this song is like that the entire way through. Just unbelievable.
Spencer Ying Kent was born with 4 hands, you just can’t see the other two because they are moving so fast.
thanks for the detailed breakdown, really appreciate it!
Admire your OCD figuring out his playing but me I just sat and savored the music he's playing.
@@azukarer115 call it ocd but it really helps you appreciate all the details he put in tho
@@miditoast not sure but i think you mean the pinch harmonics... that would be with his ring finger and little finger (??) plucking and his index finger covering one of the harmoinc intervals and his other hand fretting.
Wow, simply blown away. Been playing for 45 years and have never seen anything like this. Kid there are no words for your playing, your arrangements, and talent. You may very well be the best guitarist on the planet. Keep the songs coming please.
Man, I'm glad to see someone else say this - he really might be the best. Not showmanship, just pure musicianship, very tasteful. You ain't too bad yourself Tony.
ruclips.net/video/9U_Ay0IInS8/видео.html
In a class with Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith.
Watching this thousand times
Not sure why this brought me to tears... Maybe because I just miss her.😢
if you are attached to one particular song, that it might and always brings you back to some beautiful moments in you life, you will always want to hear it originally, with all the exact and precise arrangement as it was when you first time hear it some 40 years ago. For that case, any departures from the original version, you will hate it and you just leave the video. But this Kent version, makes me stay, and stay and stay.....he simply takes every detail of the songs, every clink and every little clink of the piano (that for a non true fans of the song might misses them), bass and every beat into his guitar. I don't know why, but for i presume he is very young lads (below 20 yo), he does care about this particular song, that he took every detail of it. For whatever it is, thanks Kent, simply brilliant !!!!!
Yeah, actualy Kent has 18 yo, but at age 15 he was already playing in high level as you can see bellow

Beautifully played. OMG you are amazing. May God continue to bless you young man. 8/19/2023. 10:48pm.
Wow thats a GOD given talent but with a lots of practice, OMG thats what we call talent
He is so smooth and melodic, with evenhanded tonal balance and dexterity, you forget how sophisticated his technique really is.
I can only hit the like button one which is unfair to this performance.
How can one man with one instrument make so many beautiful sounds? He makes his guitar sound like an orchestra!
That's why he is known as an one man band.
And sounds the quality of an orchestra as well!
He altered the tuning
James in heaven will enjoy this beautiful rendition.
His use of harmonics is on another level.
I did my best
But I guess, my best wasn't good enough
'Cause, here we are back where we were before
Seems nothin' ever changes
We're back to bein' strangers
Wonderin' if, we ought to stay
Or head on, out the door
Just Once...
Can we figure out, what we keep, doin' wrong
Why, we never last for very long
What are we doin' wrong?
Just once...
Can we find a way, to finally make it right
To make the magic last, for more than just one night
If we, could just get to it
I know we could, break through it
hmm-hmm...
(...)
I gave my all
But I think my all, may have been too much
'Cause, Lord knows we're not getting anywhere
Seems, we're always blowin'
Whatever, we've got goin'
And it seems at times, with all we've got
We haven't, got a prayer
Just once...
Can we figure out, what we keep doin' wrong
Why the good times, never last for long
Where are we goin' wrong
Just once...
Can't we find a way, to finally make it right
To make the magic last, for more than just one night
I know, we could break through it
If we could just, get to it
Just once...
I want to understand
Why, it always comes back ...to goodbye
Why... can't we get ourselves in hand
And admit to one another
We're no good, without each other
Take the best, to make it better
Find a way, to stay together
Just once...
Can we find a way, to finally make it right
(whoa!)
Make the magic last, for more than just one night
I know we could, break through it
If we could just, get to it
Just Once...
...Whoa-ohh
We can get through it...
Just ...Once
I've never seen anyone pull off harmonics like that, didn't even know that was possible! It's like he has 4 brains and 8 hands controlling that guitar all at once.
for real? I'm just amazed...how can it sound so perfect?!? i so looooove it!!!!!
This man played that record note for note!! 🙌🏾👊🏾🔥🏆
3:29 - No, wait... did I just witness a capo change from 2 to 3 in literally half a second? This is madness. Pure ingenuity. Every single note and harmonic was unreal. Just sheer beauty.
@Asao Kinoshita Yes, I saw that comment. To come from a colleague of James really does say something about the brilliance of Kent.
To Kents parents. Im kneeling down thanking you for conceiving this child. I cannot thank you enough.
Kent is absolutely incredible! If havn’t watched his arrangement of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” it’s the most captivating playing i’ve ever seen!! MUST WATCH!!
Wow this guy is amazing. Every note so clear. I’m 71 started playing nine years ago, I’ve come a long way but I’d never be this good. Love listening to him play. It makes my mine at ease, thanks for shay your takent.
The same for me. But I don’t mind. 😊
Those harmonics are sublime, best fingerstyle covers ever, really, Kent, every piece is a masterpiece!!
300 plus people didn’t like his rendition???? They need to get their ears checked!! Lol what a wonderful rendition!!!!
They watched it upside down lol
I played guitar in James's band for 11 years and I know he would of loved this!
Yo I have been to all his concerts 🤣
Time sure flies ☺️
How many in your band would sit out if Kent plays with James Ingram?
@@ericconcepcion5048 unfortunately he cant play with james anymore he is dead :(
@@gusfring8405 Sadly so, but it would have been a jam to behold!
Oh wow, what a cool thing! Great comment.
Those capo changes are unreal.
Those who dislike this video are extremely jealous such a young teenager can have such talent to play a guitar. I wish I can have just 10%
He is absolutely hands down one of the best musicians in the world
I can see this video a thousand times and I don't get tired ...
His use of harmonics… crazy. Amazing artist!
I am consistently amazed at the precision of his picking and how every note gets exactly the right emphasis. This young man might be the best guitarist in my lifetime of 6.5 decades.
No way kent should have this amount of subscribers, the guy is brilliant, I'm talking Mozart brilliant.
Me and my father used to sing this in Karaoke! I wish he is still here to hear this arrangement - he'll definitely cry hearing this... Kent you're a great guitarist man!
I love his style . His wonderful arrangement,
His choice of tunes to cover. I'm a Kent Nishimura fan.
johnbamburg me,too
I WATCHED MANY FINGERSTYLE ARRANGEMENTS OF THIS SONG AND FOUND NO ONE COMPARES TO KENTS WAY. THIS IS THE BEST EVER
Im a guitarist almost 20 years and i can play all kind fingerstyle and jazz blue's But this arrangement so crazy kent nishimura is top fingerstyle player in the world
Oh I came here late, straight hands down. Nowadays people are putting tons of percussion to arrangement to make it rich but Kent stayed with original while adding different layers of detail. You are my hero Kent ‘harmonics’ Nishimura.
My no.1 in my list most GREATEST fingerstyle guitarist. ❤️
Me too...
Mine is Alip Ba Ta. 😅
Alip bata is number1
kent nishimura is more technical than alipbata. look at kent arrangement and his playing style. smooth and cleaner sound.
naudo rodrigues: hold my guitar 😂
This is absolutely smoother than my skin
I started playing the guitar when I was in my mid teens. I am now in my late 50s. I now say 'I know how to play the guitar but I can't play the guitar'. Not after watching Kent and Alip Ba Ta. They have showed us how the guitar is to be played. They have re-defined what playing the guitar means. BW.
If you listen carefully, like really listen....You will hear no mistakes. Not one, Dada, zilch, Zero.
Stunning
There's a slight one. 4:32. i don't think that note was supposed to be deadened.
And 3:56 he was suppose to strum
And 4:00 he was also suppose to strum but he didnt. I think this is pre recorded. Still very nice arrangement tho. Never seen anyone that can arrange like this
@@Angelo-pe4go there was no strum in 4:00 only on 3:56. And just a correction its called percussive slap😁
@@Angelo-pe4go The camera angle changes look like edits. This is probably a stitch job by somebody. And I believe there is an adult supervising his song choices and arrangements and maybe the edits too. Whoever that guy is, he is probably also a very talented musician.
Kent! You’re one of the greatest guitarists to ever take a breath of life on this Planet,,,, Earth!
This guy is playing so perfect. It can’t be. He is an alien
Great hand combination and a talent for this young man .
Whoa! I simply have no words
Well said!
Actually he uses a lot of techniques, however its are not for appealing his skills but for making original song's nuance.
I almost cried listening to this. Brilliant. I can hear every nuance of notes.
No need drums no need base all in one. Love the arrangement. Notes are so clear.
i can't be too in love with sung ha jung and kent nishimura at the same time. i can't help it.
This guy's knowledge of guitar is mind blowing. Key changing with the rolling capo, man I don't even know where to begin.
Beautiful rendition, not just technical perfection.
Techniques used : Fingerstyle, Strumming( various patterns) Plucking, Percussion, Harmonics and of course the shifting of the capo. All of this makes Kent's arrangement one of the hardest pieces to pull off while incorporating every single technique to make sure it's sounding perfect. There's just loads going on in here. Beautiful cover brother.
Superman
Agree. I tried to cover his arrangement and its really difficult. Had to make some modifications so I could play it. Please check it out on my channel. ruclips.net/video/mle67zoAn2Q/видео.html
Question for the experts: is it just my imagination or did the intonation seem to go a little funky when he rolled the capo up to the third fret?
@@12centuries yes it sure did
…not to mention you could set the nuclear clock to his tempo. He’s a walking metronome
Kent's playing is amazing, but I'm most impressed by his ear to replicate every note and chord perfectly.
What the? For a guitarist like me this is like the realm of gods i'll never be able to reach.. Hands down dude
This what i thought before, but now i can play it.. you just need a heart of not giving up😊
this is for sure the most phenomenal guitar cover fingerstyle ever
This is simply acoustic guitar perfection. 10/10. I will never hear a better version. Never.
This is the best version😅
@@tekatoanimeyt3206 Never Ever.
*11/10
He is not using a acoustic guitar, he is using a classical guitar.
@@chizurumizuhara6136 afaik, a classical guitar has nylon strings.
The ultimate guitar arrangement and performance for this tune.
This kid’s parents must be proud of him.. he did everything right.. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm an 80's guy and I love this song. You have covered all the instruments, as well as the vocals of this masterpiece with your 1 instrument, and you played it so clean and classy. You are amazing!
This probably is one of the best fingerstyle that I have ever heard it's so soothing. It makes my soul relax.
The best cover of this song i ever heard
The world needs to hear this amazing rendition!!
This deserves to be viewed a million times brother!
The most accurate fingerstyle guitarist I have ever seen and heard. I’ve been a fingerstyle guitar fan since 2010 but only him could capture all details in a song.
Peter Rey Tumolva very true!!!!!!
so true. like for that
I completely agree! Accurate, clean, perfect timing, and changes in volume. He will be one of the biggest fingerstyle guitarists someday.
Peter Rey Tumolva "only him" bruh
Do u even know the meaning of that comment?
KiD i said “i’ve ever seen and heard”. Maybe you have heard other fingerstyle guitarist that I haven’t yet. This is just my “personal” preference.
I've never seen anyone use a capo like that. Stunning, a Master at so young. I am in awe!
The cleanest version of acoustic guitar for the song Just Once that I ever heard. You nailed it.
His harmonics was so fantastic, the best arrangement i heard so far.
The arrangement is amazing. The harmonics, Bass and the sound.
I love it.
The best solo recital of a pop song I have ever heard. Everything is just in place, the heavy, the light... Repeated listening again and again. My applause!
Watching support your all cover music all the best choice music. @ yamie boi
man.. Wow, I can't believe I've only just discovered your channel! It's absolutely perfect and has such a relaxing and immersive effect. When I close my eyes, it feels like there's more than one person playing the song. It truly puts me in the zone.
The talent and skills of this young man is beyond the roof.
Another one of my favorite pieces you have arranged, Kent. I listen to it often. The complexity and utter beauty of this one is unmatched...just...Stunning...
3:28 Daayyum Son! that's the fastest capo switch I've ever seen! O_O
Totally and utterly beautiful...it's beyond my wildest imagining that someone can play such a beautiful song so beautifully. Totally and utterly talented.
Played with an able guitarist, the guitar is the most expressive instrument of all!! Simply beautiful.
throwing down this kind of performance in his pajamas no less....damn.
That capo shift bro deym. if that was a hand of a pick pocket my wallet would be gone. 🙌
Hope James Ingram was watching you play this on guitar from Heaven.
I listen to this at least twice every day.
Can't believe the amount of harmonics in this arangement, you are talking serious practice to make that as smooth as that.
I was thinking like is this even real????
Daaamn!!! Very immense focus and determination,
This guy is the best I have seen on RUclips hands down!!
I had to wear headphones for this.... I had to hear all the notes.... My God Kent.... How much work did you put in this... What a rendering.
It's a really good stereo recording. It does need headphones.
especially that the song is rich in details building the magic and that Kent renders them all (the harmonics)
The precision in his playing is outstanding
This is just other-worldly! I mean, how? So beautifully-arranged. I love James Ingram, may he rest in peace, but Kent took this to a whole new plane.
Best arrangement I've heard in my whole life. Accurate and executed perfectly 👌
Came back to make sure this is still the best arrangement I've ever heard. And it still is🔥👌
Wow Kent. I wish I had a fraction of the talent you have. I would never put my guitar down if I could make it produce the music you do with yours. A God - Given talent.
This video deserves a lot of views.
I feel so unworthy to respond to such an elite talent. Suffice to say - here lies my guitar. R.I.P old friend 😭🙏
