Wouldn’t say never
General rule of thumb: If I have to crawl through it to get where I want to go, I no longer want to go there.
This is even lower than crawling, more like wiggling. The horror!!
Good rule 👍
Indeed.
I didn't even like slithering around underneath my SUV when I had to locate something under it. THe gravel didn't feel real good. I can't imagine hours of that stuff in much tinier places. Crazy!

@@ekay4495 I think he just meant that there's lots of people who watch the videos that don't understand that they're professionals; and while the tight spaces can be challenging, they're safe about it and are going to make it back out every time.
@@Levi_Tollefson accidents always happen idc how professional you are
@@bjacobsen927 I disagree. Serious incidents while caving are very rare. And these guys never get themselves into situations or spots that they won't be able to get back out of. Like they say it takes patience, and they might only be able to move a millimeter at a time, but they're always able to get back out. Bill, the guy that responded to me originally, is the Grandpa of Jacob in this video and he's been caving for 50+ years, maybe even longer. So I'd say he's a pretty good testament to their ability to do this safely.
Everyone is like "this is so relaxing to watch" and I'm here scrolling through comments instead of watching because this is the most anxiety inducing type of phobia for me.

You could be with us and it would happen even faster.
Calvin you have one hell of a channel. There is so much to learn from what you guys do. I really hope one day we get to see you guys branch out and start going to different states. There is so many caves here in Pennsylvania where i live that are totally unexplored.
Thank you for taking the immense time and effort to make these videos for us to watch and learn from. You and jake have my utmost respect!
Thank you so much for all the kind words!
love yalls vids, stay safe
Going down into a cave not know if there’s any drop off or anything living down there is terrifying😭 great vids tho man you guys are all brave🦾
They know. Between maps , and other people , they know.
Videos like this, remind me why I never have or will ever be cave diving. Beach or cave diving, hmmm... The fact that I could get stuck in there would doom me in, being 6'4 not even gonna try.
Your videos make me appreciate the little things in life a lot more
Nice words, and so true.
Truee
like being in a room with a normal height ceiling? 🤣
@@-ZTUN- So now you know we are abnormal. Imagine that! And we are completely comfortable with it. 🤪
Amazingly, my first thought while watching this was, “what if they need to use the bathroom?” 😂
Often asked, never answered. 😝
I cannot believe you pushed through that to meet with Jacob. Props to you for making it, an expert indeed! But god I can't even imagine had the fate of that cave been just slightly different and closed up, what it would be like to attempt to back out of that pinch, almost seems impossible :/ so glad you two made it out, I think this is one of the more uncomfortable caves I've seen you crawl!
Advantage of Jacob getting larger is that if he makes it down a passage there's a good chance that I can follow. Though it took some creativity and I had to take some of my clothes off.
So this was all Jacob he had the courage to go down there first and that's all was scarier.
My anxiety could never I would panic my brain goes too too far with everything amazing I must say!!
I was panicing even tho I'm comfortably watching this in my bed
It always makes me happy when you upload because that means you made it out.
Our intent every time. Thanks for watching
I haven’t commented in awhile but I just had to say WOW on this one! It must be a cool feeling going where humans have not been. I could never in a million years do this but it sure is invigorating to watch!
Well, your comments are appreciated. We doubt anyone will follow is in this one.
I love adventures but this is scary 😢 I pray no harm will be upon both of you 🙏🏻🤗
Love the prayers.
I'm realizing I cannot watch these before bed, my heart feels like I ran a marathon.
Classic lava crawl, always happy to see your weekend update. Makes my weekend nights feel complete, thanks you guys!
Very kind words indeed.
Way to much anxiety for me even watching this.
I would absolutely be petrified being down in that tunnel.
And as for that drop in hole always remember reading about that caver who got stuck going downwards...
But as always guys awesome video
We all have studied Nutty Putty. Learn from the mistakes of others so you don’t make them yourself.
Aside of the insane danger and claustrophobic situations. I mostly admire the mental strength and absolute calmness. This is far beyond what I could ever imagine.
It’s a learned mental discipline. After a few decades, it’s an addiction. We love being in the “zone” where the body is under the total control of the mind.
To Caveman Hikes. I’d love to hear a long-form interview specifically about how you go into caving and WHY, WHY you enjoy it? I really am interested, if such an interview already exists I’d much appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.
We have several medium length interviews on our second channel.
But I basically have to make up answers. Because how I got into this was I saw a cave and went inside. And it was fun.
I appreciate your interest and I consider myself a thoughtful person. But caving has always just been a matter of absolute fun and restfulness.
@@CalvinHikes Right on. That summary makes sense to me. I guess no one knows what's gonna give them that feeling you describe, absolute fun and restfulness, until they do it. It's just dawning on me that I love riding motorcycles, specifically sport bikes, and some people find that absurd. So not too much different to how I feel about exploring restrictive caves. Thanks for your response!
Thanks for watching. Lots of bigger scarier adventures on the way.

*Thanks to Jackson for the "Welcome to the dark frontier" voice-over at 2:29.
Ok...so this one was tough... haven't felt this much anxiety during one of your videos in a bit. But it was an amazing video, and I can appreciate the drive of you two gentlemen! 💯💪 You guys are insane, and I mean that in the best way! Lol
You are welcome. Yes we are a long ways down that road of insanity. Well I am. And probably grandpa. Jacob seems to still have all his faculties together.
@MAIN no....really? I'm shocked! 😲 🤡
@@CalvinHikes idk Jacob is a small fire that’s been burning all night waiting for the old guys to wake up and throw come cave entrances to dive into… (the fire wood) … I’ve never asked …. What’s your happy place you go to mentally when in a bind?
Caving IS our happy place.
@@billsanders9387 Happy Father's Day Mr Bill and the rest of the dad's in the Caveman Hikes/Even Darker family! 👍
No idea how you guys are cheerful and cracking jokes. What you are doing is literally my greatest fear. I go to sleep at night praying to God that he NEVER put me into a situation like the one in this video.
The God you pray to goes with us as we explore His creation.
@@billsanders9387 the God I pray to has no place in fear for there is no fear where He is
I agree. No caves or coal mines 🥺
I don’t know why the hell YT recommended me this… But holy shit this is insane!! Y’all are badass and ain’t no way I would do this haha man I was freaking out watching this
Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoy a couple more videos. Some are much more sane, especially on the Even Darker channel
@@billsanders9387 I’m hooked now! But still rather pickup a rattlesnake than do what you crazy bastards do lol. It’s amazing content though I can appreciate anyone who enjoys being outside and doing what they love
Dude, we’ve encountered a few rattlesnakes in our caving. It’s all on video. Check video with hibernating black bear. We never get bored.
@@billsanders9387 I gotta see the bear!!
Crazy stuff. I wouldn’t even be brave enough to try on my teenage son’s shirt (even though we’re the same height and I’m only 5lbs heavier), much less crawl through uncharted tunnels he barely fit into. I have no personal interest in caving but these videos are pretty great either way!
Nice comment. Three generations of the family caved yesterday. The craziness runs in the family.
I felt like I was in this cave with y’all the anxiety rush is ridiculous
Now imagine an earth quake and you feel the cave closing but you cant get out...
I will never understand the mindset that propels you guys into places like this. It's awesome and terrifying. I'm claustrophobic but I have a profound interest in looking beneath the surface of the earth. Watching you guys in these tunnels was physically unpleasant at times. It's utterly insane how you manage to get through such narrow spaces. I admire your explorer spirit immensely. Thank you for giving me this powerful perspective.
The mindset is I want to have a good time but I don't want it to be easy. ; )
@@CalvinHikes It definitely did not look easy :D It's easy to see the pure adrenaline and satisfaction in those moments where you laughed. Crazy in the best way, for sure.
@@CalvinHikes Don't want it to be easy? You certainly chose the right hobby for that.
If you have a profound interest in caves as you say, then I definitely suggest you look up a caving association/club, and give it a try, regardless of claustrophobia. Not all caves are tight squeezes. In fact, in my several years of caving, I've never had to crawl more than a meter or two at a time.
Of course, local geology dictates what kinds of caves tend to form in the area. These are lava tubes. Karst caves, on the other hand, tend to be quite spacious most of the time.
@@zorkan111 I appreciate the suggestion, thank you. I've been tempted in the past and, whilst tight squeezes are a horrifying prospect, most of my fear stems from the idea of being trapped underground at all, really. Objectively, I realise the chances of this happening are pretty slim at the best of times, but anxiety and phobias don't care about logic :D
Man this was an amazing video to start the week off with, absolutely loved it! Jacob really just went head first into that hole no questions asked haha, very brave indeed. Great video!
He’s a beast underground. Otherwise, quiet, reserved, and polite.
Just watching this makes me feel uncomfortable from the amount of claustrophobia I feel and just seeing how difficult that seems is just scary to me
Rest easy knowing we plan and equip each exploration very precisely. Read that: PBJ, Snickers, and extra batteries. 🤗
It amazes how far people will push themselves just to go look at some rocks and dirt.
I could never do this.
If i cant strech out my arms in a space, i would just panic.
Watching this has been stressfull.
How they cope when your stuck amazes me.
Well done guys.
I had a panic attack in a hospital MRI machine. No way I'd go underground.
