Suzuki Jimny - Quick timelapse setting up Roof Top Tent

- A quick look at setting up the Front Runner roof tent and Darche awning with a custom extension I made, on the new Suzuki Jimny. Took my time (13 mins). Set up is under 10 minutes with a bit more haste and far quicker with 2 people doing it. I struggle the awning up at the moment, I'm sure I'll get the right technique. Sorry for the crappy video quality I'll start uploading better videos when I can.

Wife doesn't like the cold 🥶 I finished her off on the kielder new years eve trip in -3 degrees 😂
😬, yeah, my wife hates the cold too. Minus 3?😬😬😬.....yeah, that'd do it❗️it looked pretty breezy as you were setting up for this one too 😯. I had to get rid of my 1994 VW transporter because it was starting to really show it's age & wear, it was moderately fitted out as a camper, so I'm really looking forward to exploring the possibilities of the Jimny.
just out of curiosity, who do 4x4 off roaders like camping on top of their vehicles?
I can understand in snake country or severely cold ground temperatures but other than that it's a bit confusing - I guess one good bonus is if you place the car in a good position so you can catch an awesome morning sunrise over the ocean or something like that.
cool vid anyways, I used to like jimnys but now I'm hooked on G.Vitaras instead, still suzuki family

Hi 👋🏼 for me it’s the convenience. Just pop it out and no need to find flat dry ground etc. I love camping in a lavvu and hammocks too. Anything is good fun 👍

BushmanAOD Yeah I get a cold back in the hammock. Don’t think my underquilt is much good or maybe I’m not setting it up correctly. Probably the latter 😁
The day I stop needing to tow heavy, I’ll be trading up my ranger and buying a jimny always loved how practical they are, great setup
Cheers buddy. Yeah it’s compact and surprisingly versatile. Shame it can’t tow much those fully kitted up off road trailers though.
Really fantastic trip👍, but in my clear opinion only one main thing you should have involved with you. A k9 companion, sorry , as an innocent commentator, a dog is the best friend in such a trip. Thanks! yes we’d love a dog companion but unfortunately there is nowhere for it to be when we’re at work. One day for sure. I did get a visit on my last camping trip from someone else’s dog though. Which was good fun 😂

The tent fabric is normal canvas and not insulated in any way. In the winter it's very cold but with a good sleeping bag and insulated mattress I sleep really warm.

Is the 30kg roof load limit just a "suggested" limit and not a failure limit? Because 30kg isnt allot for anything really.
That figure is a carry over from the gen 3 model. Depending upon who you ask 30 or 40 kg is mentioned.
Regardless a vast amount of new jimny owners load up more than that. I wrote a blog about my experiences geordiejimny.com/jimny-roof-load-weight/ but ultimately even putting a front runner full rack on there with a few boxes is hitting the limits quoted. There’s nothing in the handbook for load limits but it’s all at the owners risk!
I only load a tent up there with upgraded suspension though. It wasn’t a nice drive with the stock suspension. I’ve also changed my set up a lot in recent times.

Silly question, can both the roofrack and the car itself handle the weight of the tent and two people sleeping on the roof? I weigh a good 90kg and my wife about 60kg. Plus the 43kg of the roof tent itself. Is this fine?
Hey 👋 I float around 87kg and wife ~60kg. Static weight strength holds it no problem at all.

That's a very nice setup...I'm considering the same tent for my pickup bed and mounting it like yours to open front to back...question...with the ladder removed, how did the cover sit on the tent? I mean the standard cover had accommodation for the ladder...would there be a empty/loose area on the cover where the ladder would be if it was mounted? Or did you get another cover that sits flat that doesn't allow a mounted ladder? Thanks!
Hey mate. Yeah you’re right. I ended up getting the top of the cover removed and replaced with a flat piece. The company I used make custom covers for things like box trailers.
At first I did just strap the excess down but sometimes the wind would catch, and it would balloon up. I mention it in more detail with pics on my blog here geordiejimny.com/suzuki-jimny-ultralight-roof-tent-set-up

Msfitoy Factory yeah I bought it from Trek Overland mainly in case the mod went wrong but also the black matched up better. Also if I ever sell the tent it can easily go back to its original state 👍

F. De. Vos. that’s great buddy. yeah these tents are slower than the posh ones. If rushed set up is less than five mins. I’m in no hurry though, quite enjoy setting it up. Got to be careful of the heavy roof tents on a jimny or i would have bought an ikamper x-cover. Holding out hope that their new mini’s are fairly lightweight 🤞🏼

really nice setup! can you tell me the dimensions of the Darche awning?
Thanks buddy, it's only 1.4m wide x 2m long. In hindsight I'd have tried to find a 1.5m or 1.6m that would still not overhang the Jimny roof. But it's a good size for just the two of us that use it, especially with the extra bit I added.

Wondering why only use part of the roof.
That’s a good question! You can mount the folding roof tents it off the side or rear of the vehicle. I assume it due to the need for leverage to open it, never thought about it before :)
I choose to mount it off the rear to add some extra shelter on the rear door. The ladder helps support the overhang along with sturdy brackets.
@@OutThereEquipped Besides, half of the tent is suspended in mid air, with no support at all. What would happen if 2 to 3 adults sit on the side near the entrance of the tent?
The ladder and brackets supports two people. It’s a 2 person tent. They all work like this :) it’s safe 👍
Check out the tent manufacturers I’m sure they have a better explanation than I for the design decisions. I am quite interested myself so I’ll do some googling, but it’s a rock solid setup.
What’s that whole setup cost? (Minus the Jimny of course. )
Scott Koenig The tents ~£1k, awning ~£250 and I’ve since removed the rack and just run with Front Runner load bars ~£270. £1520 plus shipping. Low end of the Root Tent camping set up. Does a mint job though mate.
