    Powder burn rate has a huge effect on how length of barrel effects velocity. I'm betting the Remington +P gets the added pressure by using a faster burning powder. Which means the barrel length is going to have less effect. Muzzle velocity is a complex topic, where a LOT of factors have to be taken into account.

      When I was younger, I could hit targets at long distance (I'm sure it was not that good), but today, I'm lucky if I hit the paper 50 yards. 100 yards is a waste on anything less than a rifle. But like Paul says, most encounters are based on the FBI's 7 yard scenario. As long as I can stay good at 25 yards, 7 yards is a breeze.

    I'm guessing a lot of the variation is related to the burn speed of the powders. Especially with hot self defense ammo because the manufacturers probably expect the users are often using shorter barrels. They might be using the fastest powder they can and +P rate it because of the fast powder causing a higher peak pressure.

    I'm still curious about the performance of 230 grain projectiles in 5 inch vs 6 inch barrels. I think we can reasonably infer it would resemble this 185 grain test. Specifically, I suspect that the 230 grain +P hollow points would expand fine out of a 5 inch barrel and perhaps a smidge better out of a 6 inch barrel. I think I would still like to see the presentation, though.

    Well I enjoyed part 2 every bit as much as part 1. I have to agree that the necessity of taking a 100 yard shot with a 1911 is remote at best. But as an intellectual question it is interesting, and any reason to test one's self is a good reason. Please keep up the very good work.

    That Remington +P is a spicy box. Imagine that from a PCC; another point of contact for more stability, a longer sight radius for more accuracy, AND a longer barrel to add even more velocity.

    • @Kaelland
      @Kaelland Год назад +2

      A lot of semi-automatic pistol ammunition doesn't gain *that* much velocity from a longer barrel the way revolver ammunition does. They'll pick up some, but not as much as a lot of people expect. Those small cases tend to be loaded with faster powder that's more efficient in typical handgun-length barrels.
      That said, I do agree that the Remington +P ammo Paul shot here was a lot hotter than I expected, and it might be an exception to what I just stated above. Only one way to find out, and that's to try it.

    • @GothicSoldier9000
      @GothicSoldier9000 Год назад

      @@Kaelland I figured the velocity wouldn't change much. The accuracy difference at 100 yards is more what I'm curious about; Paul already hits really good with just a handgun (I know he's got years of service and experience, but it's still impressive). The Hi Point 4595 would be an interesting guest star.

    I reload and in reviewing standard loads against + P it seems that the +Ps are more about pressure than velocity assuring that the gun functions. I was not happy with expansion from my 45 auto so I bought a Kimber and a 460 Rowland kit for it with a 6 in barrel. At 1600 fps and 185 gr bullets it is often too much. The 225s 240s are good. Video idea for Paul.
    I have no idea how you could test this but, there seems to be a really big push in the last year about handgun stopping power against grizz. Hilarious to me, but lets for the sake of argument present the case. Perhaps testing on the meat target with some type of hard or thicker frontal covering to simulate thick skin and dense bones.
    Part two of this test, every single "anti bear" round that I come across on the marketplace seems to be Hardcast or FMJ, is it really better than HP?
    Perhaps a wrap up of the video of showing the difference between multiple ultra high horsepower pistol cartridges and a single 12 gauge slug.
    Hope all is well, love the videos, keep up the great work.
