If you think about it, assuming that Lakan is MaoMao's father, Jinshi basically bought Lakan's only child. Given that Lakan likely knows Jinshi is the prince I'd probably want to give Jinshi a hard time too if I were Lakan. I have a feeling that all these little things like the fire, the poisoning with the seaweed, now this metalworker with the complicated will, are all created/orchestrated by Lakan as a test to see how clever MaoMao is. They all started happening after Lakan saw MaoMao, likely recognizing her. Then Lihaku, who Lakan likely would learn was MaoMao's guarantor, is assigned to investigate the fire which brought her into the investigation. Then a poisoning which he knew would catch MaoMao's interest was brought to her by Gaoshun, likely at Lakan's request, based on a case Gaoshun had looked into previously. Lakan is testing MaoMao to see how clever she is since he can't really approach her directly since she was bought by Jinshi. He's clever too though, so he'll do it in a way where none of these events can be traced back to him, and MaoMao doesn't speak on conjecture.
Lakan is interesting character, sus but interesting. The translation makes him worse than he actually is. It doesn't mean he's that good, but in a way, he's not that bad. That's all I can say for now.
If they are allowed to enter the consort palace, they are all eunuchs. But very few actually can, so no soldier, Lakan is not and neither is the young guy we met this episode Basen (I think maybe we saw him earlier) ... Gaoshun is an eunuch, supposedly, just like Jinshi.
The thing is that this is the outer court where court officials and soldiers work/live, not the consorts. That’s why they’re here. Basen and Lakan wouldn’t be able to enter the inner court because they’re military (not eunuchs)

I was also curious to know if you had checked "7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!" There are currently three episodes out, and it has been surprisingly enjoyable. Although the title says villainess, the story does not really have much to do with villainesses and/or otome games. The main character is very likable, in my opinion at least, at it seems that there is more to this show than just the romance aspect. It seems other people are finding this show quite enjoyable as well. I would be very interested to know what you think about it. I think you will find it very fun to watch (may also want to react to it).
Lakan is very sketchy. Obviously Jinshi won't let Maomao close to him (or I want to think that) or at least he will keep an eye on her all the time. At 12:05 it was very weird how Maomao reacted. It could be that she somehow knows something about Lakan? Maybe she heard some stories back at the Verdigris house? In any case the plot just got interesting 🤔
The poison in the seaweed is presumably acid type which would mean that soaking the seaweed in base liquid (edit: such as limewater) could neutralize the poison.. i think.
i think the comment about lakan wanting to force himself on the courtesan was a mistranslation, i've read that part of the manga and i'm pretty sure i would have remembered if he had hinted he did something like that. not saying he's a good guy, but he's not THAT bad.

I think he lowered her value by simply getting her pregnant. And it’s most likely that it was consensual because Maomao once mentioned that courtesans would consistently take abortifacients to remain valuable/working. So they probably did have a relationship. But that leads to the bigger question of why it fell through. Did he think she and the baby died during her pregnancy? Because now there’s this new courtesan that was just bought with a similar knack for solving puzzle , around the same age as his possible child and also from the same brothel. He probably is hoping Maomao IS his child for more than one reason.
Courtesans, especially high ranking ones can choose not to have sex with customers and be paid purely for their company. And he explicitly said "I wanted to force myself on her", how is that likely consensual? (if it's not a mistranslation, and it's not con-noncon either otherwise the show would've addressed it).

So maybe she was agreed that anyone that beat her at Go is the indicated man for her, and just Lakan push beyond his limits to beat her
Also Lakan may look aloof but he is very smart, he knows the existence of MaoMao and just not to spoil it will be more detailed in the upcoming episodes.

There were probably contraceptives as well, so if it wasn’t consensual, I’m certain she would’ve taken precautions in order to not become pregnant. I’m not dismissing the possibility that it was forced but given what we know and what was at courtesans disposal, it is unlikely that she would’ve continued or even allowed the pregnancy to happen because that would completely destroy her ability to do her job.
