The evil overlord in Berserk seems to be a natural consequence of desire, especially the desire for something that transcends the individual. I think Miura used religion as the ultimate transcendental object one can long for. Great video! Please consider making a video about the Kushan Empire.
i really like your point, desire creates something in the deep beyond, im glad you liked the, and check the description...i do have plans for the kushan empire in the future!!
Idk, this kinda reminds me of evangelion, where theres all this christian imagery that made people question if the story was some christian metaphor or influence. Then they said, nope just looked neat.
I find irony that guts more closely represents a struggling man who seeks repentance than what the church wants god did not want the current church its ironic that church became the pharisee
id say thats a bit harsh haha, I dont think miura hated all religion, especially as much of it is inspired in his works creating great artwork from Hinduism for example. other mangaka I guess that could be applicable, but Miura remained respectful from what I have read
however when you consider how involved religion is amongst society, and miura obviously draws from historical events, its practically impossible to not include some form of religion, catholicism just happens to be one of the largest in european history, its not meant to insult outright, just critique, cant blame him for that lmao. not disrespectful in my opinion. @@ttterg6152
@@VidsByVokno. I’m talking about people who are like “Arghh guts is a based struggler going against the status quo! Just like me!” The point of abrahamic religion is that man is powerless and everything is set in stone according to God’s plan. Berserk is that humans overcoming causality and struggling against cosmic forces. It’s self defeating
Well, I'm one of them, what's so funny about it? You think it's impossible? :D Miura's work may not be a Christian story, but its message is Christian-adjacent: preserving light amidst darkness, loving others and caring for them, struggling against evil and the very-Catholic praise of free will (in opposition to the Puritan/Calvinistic Protestant concept of destiny). If anything, Christian culture inspired "Berserk" because it's a fundamental ingredient of European medieval history and that's what the late sensei Miura seemed to be inspired by the most. Danse macabre leitmotif can be seen basically everywhere in "Berserk", and what's a more late-medieval-Christian mood than the feeling of impending doom and nearing the Judgement Day after the Black Death and countless wars ravaged Europe? The images of false priests like Mozgus or Pontiff and a charismatic antichrist like Griffith are very in-line with the Apocalypse of St. John too. There are also four Godhand members just like the Four Riders, the world of "Berserk" nears its end through several stages etc.
Now that I wrote this it seems like I forget about other "Berserk" inspirations like Hinduism in Kushan Empire's culture and Shinto in fairy/witch magic but I wanted to address Christian inspirations specifically. It is beyond any doubt that other religions inspired Miura as well, so I hope there's more talk about that in the community.
The idea of evil problematises all the religion and lack of religion in the Berserk universe. It’s a bizarre paradox, the idea of evil is clearly Godlike. If we agree that a God enacts it’s will and can’t be stopped (if it could be stopped it’s not all powerful and therefore not God) then we can say the Berserk universe has a God. Which means that the religions that stem from the idea of evil such as the Holy See (worship of Griffith), the Kushan religion (worship of Ganishka) and the Fertility Cult (worship of Slann) can be said to be faithfully executing the will of God and his apostles. The opposing force is the fairy religion that appeared to once be the dominant religion in the world living in harmony with spirits and such. This religion was rejected by humans, humans give birth to the idea of evil. If this religion can be destroyed and the power of the manifold spirits be dampened, how can they be God? But simultaneously how can something born of the hearts of men be God also? What force in the universe gave humanity the power to create a powerful reality warping construct like the Idea? I’d theorise it was the spiritual nature of the world and the force of Od, man takes control of that psychic technology and makes a powerful Demiurge. The true God of the Berserk world is the unknown architect of the psychic landscape of the Astral World, the one who governs and created the Interstice, Qliphoth, the Divine Domain and the Abyss. So the religions actually tap into one of the most powerful forces in the universe to receive lies that they actually want to be told. It’s strange but desired apparently.
You must take into account Miura belongs to a Buddhist/Shinto society, in their worldview to have a world with many deities and no supreme God is normal, the closest thing to a supreme God the Japanese people have is the Buddha Vairocana (Dainichi, in Japanese), and he basically isn't the creator of this world because within their worldview if an enlightened being creates a world, it can only be a Pure Land, basically a kind of Buddhist paradise, even in a secular modern society their culture is impregnated with these ideas. There is no paradox in it.
@@doomermensch5242 As my understanding of Buddhism and Shinto are superficial at best I will bow to your wisdom on such matters. Can you demonstrate some similarities between the Spirituality (or whatever category it would be) in Berserk and Buddhism/Shinto?
@@way2tehdawn It is something that probably isn't intentional but it's part of Japanese culture, most of the benign or neutral spirits in the world of Berserk are spirits tied to the natural world and despite being of western inspiration in aesthetics their benign or neutral alienation and their relation to nature make them similar to the Kami of Shinto Animism, also this notion of the world going through different ages is similar to the Yugas in Buddhism and Hinduism, also the members of the God Hand are not eternal and are replaced with time, that is interesting to me because in Buddhism the Demon Lord Mara can also die after his ridiculously long lifespan expires and a different being is born to take his place as Mara, with the same name, also the mental pollution and negative energy of the humans having an effect in the world and vice versa, creating an era of darkness gives me some Buddhism vibes. I think it's not intentional tho, for example, Hayao Miyazaki once said his films aren't supposed to be Shinto films but they seem to be involuntarily affected by the cultural environment of Japan, this recurrent themes in anime are just part of Japanese culture, it seems to be that the world of Berserk does not have a God, or at least, a creator God, because the idea of Evil was created by humans.
I really don't like how religion is portrayed in Berserk. Mostly because we never really understand what the Holy See religion is about besides being a dark mirror of Catholicism. I wish we saw why their doctrine is so evil and the influence of the God Hand in it. Of all of Berserk it is probably the lowest point, since it comes off as a reddit atheist view of Christianity more than any legitimate criticism. I think Miura shared the very negative view many Japanese have of Christianity, and instead showed more shinto-aligned beliefs (the "pagan" faith of the witches) into a more positive light.
No, it’s not reddit atheist. Reddit atheists would be complaining about how “sodomy is le bad” or “arghh why do I have to abstain from abortion” or something like that. Berserk is more so criticizing them for clinging onto beliefs thinking everything will be okay if they pray, even in a world out to get most people. It criticizes the fact that through extreme piety and no introspection or perception, people are more blind to the truths of the world and their surroundings. Reddit atheists just cry because they are told to not be degenerate.
Than you would hate how religion is portrayed during the crusades and interogations of Heretics during the middle ages. The Holy Seas bible is not important, what is important is seeing how a world trapped in darkness could turn to religion and be corrupted by the people who bastardise it for themselves. Religion in Berserk is a plot device if you look at it through the God Hands eyes as it is a tool in their big plan. Miura made Griffith a false prophet humanitu willed in after yearning for a savior. Mozgus is a man who blinded himself to the point of justifying torture and murder for his faith. These are typical of modern day religions. We see hate groups like the clan rise up for similar reasons and cults spring uo in the same way. Miura is plainly criticizing the fanaticism of extreme beleifs and not the general people of beleif.
That’s not true. Many pagan rituals have been connected to Catholicism. Sannheim, and many more look at our days. Just as Constantine saw a cross at milvean bridge. People saw the falcon. To unite. Catholic means “universal” in Greek. Just as Griffith wanted. Christian is a pagan concept
