I love how ignorant people in the comments always immediately jump to the conclusion that Miura has a reddit atheist outlook on religion and christianity because they can't fathom a nuanced take on the way people believe in it! In my eyes, the Holy Iron Chain Knights fall back on religion to "justify" the senseless torture of otherwise innocent people instead of the case being "They are a weird cultist group who believes in a religion; therefore they are now the bad guys"! The Role of Religion in Berserk can be viewed in multiple ways. For a lot of nonbelievers Religion will be viewed as the blinding force that is used to fanatacise and oppress the people, that will radicalise them to pursue their agenda and certainly screwtinize them. Believers could very well see Berserk as a faithful message, after all its story is very similar to the book of revelation. The Rising of Griffith and the Corruption of the Peoples Mind would be fitting, in comparison to the Antichrist and the Enslavement of the World. We cant really know what Miura means with Berserk because he didnt really publically state something(idk correct me if im wrong ) . Religion has its dark sides and is not purely good but people also shouldnt confuse the complex of religion with faith itself.

30:30 Also I think the most peak scene in the manga, the a lot of stuff happens in it, a lot of conflict. And that whole fucking exchange where Nakoshi starts seeing himself instead of Ito, his own unconscious literally speaking to him, and saying how his homunculus is "a shrimp coated in lies", which is in my opinion the thing that can sum up Nakoshi's character perfectly at first glance, as he was a person that felt like nothing, that hated his face and everything about himself, but most importantly, the thing with Nakoshi is that he feels nothing, neither hapiness nor pain, and so he tries to feel that void by escaping in lies, his face, his money, his career, his reputation, his women, his cars, his possessions, his "friends", his praise, his accent all of them lies as they have no real substance, and gave him no life, no soul, so he then descents slowly into madness. He wants attention, he wants people to look at his heart and see him, even though there is just nothing there for nobody, only for himself. It scares him so much he unsews his eye instantly, as he cannot stand to hear what he truly is. Probably the best scene in the entire manga.

I love how Asano writes the crime they commit because it actually is left pretty ambiguous who did it since her step mom had not moved between panels, making it unlikely she did awaken, and also the fact her mom had such a hold on her that she couldn’t even protect herself and Punpun stepped in after she was attacked. Given all the times Punpun lied to her, I wouldn’t be surprised if she lied to him perhaps to give him reason to keep living. It’s so complicated regardless of who, but it hurts me especially she told him she didn’t want to go yet took her own life.

A big lesson that Homunculus teaches is that it’s not always a good idea to help those who don’t ask for it. The highschooler didn’t want help with her problems of symbols, the Yakuza boss didn’t need or even sought help, Ita never asked for help, and he seemed content with how he lived despite how horrible. In most cases of Nakoshi’s unwanted intervention, the person that he was trying to “fix” was worse off in the end. The high school girl was traumatized, the Yakuza boss lost his role in the Yakuza, Nanako ended up possibly lobotomized or even dead, and Ita ended up losing his life. Nakoshi’s need to “help” was definitely a sign of his narcissism and how he only saw himself as the cure to everyone’s problems because he “saw their true selves”

This is one of my favorite mangas of all time. This and Hideo Yamamoto's other work "Ichi The Killer" are prime character study mangas for me. But I am so glad you pointed out Susumi's obvious depraved behavior here. He's a fascinating character but much like other Hideo protagonists he's not written to be a good person and that is the intention. I think too many people overthink his character and start trying to "logic" their way into his way of thinking. While there is a subliminal/primal desire he is following, it's not in any way reasonable or benevolent. From how he treats the homeless to how he absolutely dehumanizes every woman he meets. He's grade A scum and it makes you wonder how much of him is based on a real person.
