I can't with Book of the month sponsor adds anymore BUT YOURS. Yours I watched. You're so funny XD And I love that idea.
Yea I am tired of watching people promote them, but never read any of the books.....
👍👍
Emma had said before that she tends to be serious in her channel or talking about books in general but in that skit intro you can really see her fun personality shine through!!
Her skits are always the best. The mustache always gets me 😭😭
@@khalilahd. The most recent Agatha Christie video of hers is my fave mustache appearance🤣
Watch the blooper videos and you'll see how absolutely hilarious she actually is
most amazing and creative spponsorship intro Ive ever seen!
Haha thank you!!
Ma'am. Ma'am. I have never enjoyed an ad so much in my life - "Don't look for me. You won't find me until then."........ This character belongs in a self-aware cheesy detective novel YESTERDAY. I love them 😅
You deserve an Oscar for the intro
lol thank you thank you
Okay, your ad was probably the first one ever on youtube that I not only didn't skip but ENJOYED. Well done!
Steinbeck is phenomenal. 'Cannery Road' is one of my favourite books ever and absolutely what I would recommend anyone down about humanity, because it is about these simple, flawed characters who are just trying their best to do good things for each other and sometimes fail terribly. It's also quite short, has some gorgeous reflections on nature and life woven in, and essentially a love letter to his old neighborhood. It's another good one to start with before tackling the big epics and speaks of profound love for humanity in all its fallibility.
Best Book of the month sponsor ad I've seen so far! QUEEN 👑
From a philosophy major, it's an amazing discipline but incredibly difficult. When reading philosophy, don't be afraid to rely on referencing summaries to understand some of the basic arguments. Don't be afraid of having the work being "spoiled"--the point of reading philosophy isn't to be entertained but to learn!
The book of the month ad is EVERYTHING
For some reason I'm so excited for to take an American Literature class. I absolutely adore American lit, and Steinbeck is one of my favorites. I like to describe his writing as somewhere between Hemingway and Faulkner, where Hemingway is praised for his simplistic, extremely blunt and straightforward, but still emotionally impactful prose, whereas Faulkner is like the praised for having the complete opposite. Steinbeck is not hard to read, and at times leans more to the Hemingway side of writing style, but he does some things with emotions that I just don't understand, and the stories he tells are all immaculate. If you have to read more Steinbeck for your class, then you're in for a massive treat, especially if you're reading something like East of Eden or Of Mice and Men.
THE PEARL IS 100% THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO STEINBECK. Soz for the excitement. I just love this man. Also, the introduction for The Pearl in the Penguin cloth bound edition is highly insightful and a great tiny biography about him and his inspirations. Plus, the tale is thoroughly dissected and explained. I’m in love with this book and his writing.
As a French person that took philosophy and literature class and studied/read Descartes I can definitely tell you that he is a not a cool dude BUT still give it a try !
Omyghod the acting, emmie proved that she is a writer a reader and an actor WE STAN A MULTITALENTED EMPOWER WOMAN IN THE AREA OF LITERATURE
The Ads are getting better and better omg. I love them you are AMAZING
The way you incorporate sponsorships is fantastic!! Again.
Your dress gives me Anne of Green Gables vibes 😍
Love your videos and I'm really looking forward to the readathon.
So excited for the 24h readathon!
SOOOO EXCITED
That sponsored part in the beginning is PURE art, I love how creative you are
the sponsor segment was so smooth and funny i forgot to skip it. loved it :)
I'm glad you are starting to read Steinbeck. My favorite book is Travels With Charley. I recently read Cannery Row and I loved it. Thanks for your great channel.
I really enjoyed Graceling. I read it in a Young Adult Fantasy class I took at University. I did a creative project where I wrote a fan fiction called "Soupling," about a character who's graced with the ability to make the perfect bowl of soup.
I'm so excited that you're picking up more philosophy books!! I'm a philosophy student who watches your videos because I wanna learn more about literature, and I've learnt so much from you 🥰 One of my professors once said "Literature is sometimes more philosophical than philosophy", there is so much intertwining between the two, it's fascinating. I think you would also like Kierkegaard's writings, or philosophers of aesthetics such as Plato, Kant, Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard. I'd be happy to suggest specific titles if you're interested! I hope you'll have a great time reading philosophy and I'm so curious to hear your thoughts on it ❤
Hi! I am really interested in philosophy but don't know where to start. Do you have any recommendations I could consider? I am into everything existentialism, Death and Life, religion, nature, love, mental health. I read a lot. I've enjoyed The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus. So please, anything, I would really love to incorporate philosophy into my reading. 🥰
@@lesego3965 Hii, I'm honored to be entrusted with philosophy recommendations for you! :D I'm no expert and only a novice to philosophy as well but I'll try my best. Camus is one of those who believe philosophy is better passed on through narratives and stories so all of his writings are very engaging and accessible for big readers, I'm reading The Plague and liking it as well. Other French existentialism writers would also be my suggestion, such as Simone de Beauvoir and Sartre, although they write without a narrative so it would be a bit more daunting to get through. In Being and Nothingness Sartre writes a lot about mortality and immortality, love, sex, religion so I think you'd be interested. De Beauvoir's The Ethics of Ambiguity compliments Sartre's work well with meditations on freedom and choices. If you want to branch out of 20th-century France, Kierkegaard and Heiddeger are considered to be founding fathers of existentialism. Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, The Concept of Anxiety, The Sickness Unto Death cover all of the topics you mentioned, as with Heiddeger's Being and Time, The Question Concerning Technology, with considerations of nature as well. There are so many more works I want to introduce, but maybe these would suffice for now, as the above are all very giant works that we study in school through years. I'd recommend reading secondary sources about those philosophers and works, as well as podcasts covering them, to aid your understanding and help you get the most out of your time reading difficult texts, us students still listen to Philosophize This til graduation haha. Please let me know if you're interested in philosophies beyond European male writers - Eastern, African philosophies, woman, queer philosophers. Hope this helps a bit with finding philosophy readings and hope you'll enjoy them 🥰
@@hongnguyenkim8541 came here to recommend French existentialists but you've got it covered haha
@@hongnguyenkim8541 thank you so much for these! Just put all your recommendations on my tbr!!! 🥰
Please do another bookshelf tour! I keep rewatching the old ones and would love to watch an updated version ✨
I thought I was the only one who struggled to pick books every month 😅😅 but I’m excited for the may reads! I definitely want to pick up a few once I’m done with my current series
May the 4th be with you Emma! 🥰
I’m wearing a Star Wars shirt to celebrate today!!❤️
@@LexieMoon321 GO Lexie GO! 😊
And with you💙
Petition for Emma to start making acting sketches as well
please the ads are so gold
Omg I absolutely adore The Pearl! One of my favorites! So happy you’re enjoying it!
If you want a great comprehensive but fictional introduction to philosophy, I recommend reading Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. It's also a Norwegian novel so good for fiction around the world.
This is such a good book, perfect for people who are curious about philosophy but don't know where to start
I’ve had this one on my shelve for years and never picked it up . Might have to read it this year now.
I think a lot of the hate for Steinbeck comes from the fact that most people are forced to read him for school. I personally thought that Of Mice and Men was fantastic.
Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors and it makes me so sad that a lot of my friends hate his books because they had to read it for school. I read Of Mice and Men, Grapes of Wrath, and The Pearl for school and absolutely loved all three.
I'm so glad you discovered Steinbeck. He's been my favorite author for decades. I find his writing simple to understand but packed with so much depth. Love your channel. (p.s. I joined BOTM because of you. Thanks so much for not only hawking the product but putting such creative effort into it.)
Well, I'm studying Education in Philosophy and I can say Discourse on the Method is a great book to start, it was actually the first one we got to read as an introduction to Philosophy. It is short and it is one of the most important books not only because it explains the Cogito but because it is a system itself. And also sometimes it is good to start chronologically because philosophy is a cyclical subject, so you may encounter a concept that we can track back to Plato, for example, and it's good to know what that same concept meant back then and how it has evolved.
Emma, I forgot to mention..I love John Steinbeck, The Pearl made me cry. East of Eden was my favorite book by Steinbeck. Hope you enjoy his writing as much as I do.
East of Eden is SOOOO good !
You give me confidence to finally pick up East of Eden, thank you ! I’m currently re-reading Travels with Charley for the umpteenth time. I adore his writing so much. I’m German and we had an excerpt of Travels with Charley in our English textbook. I instantly fell in love with it.
I actually want to read all of his work this year. So why not continue with East of Eden.
Thanks for putting so much effort into making the ad portion of video entertaining! Book lovers see BOTM ads constantly so they can get old, and while I don’t expect this level of commitment and certainly not every month, I really appreciate it.
Exactly!
sending everyone watching this the best!!! hope the rest of your week goes pleasantly 🫶🥰
emma, i'm currently reading the grapes of wrath by john steinbeck, i'm loving it and i'm so glad you're reading him too
the intro made me giggle so hard, i'm about 3 minutes in and i had to stop to say this
'i love goats :'(' me too
That intro skit is in fact the best thing I've seen on youtube
So glad you're getting into Steinbeck! Grapes of Wrath was a total 10/10 for me 👌🏽
The jump cut to BOTM Emmie from standing to just sitting on the couch had me snorting with laughter. Idk why.
my day just goes better whenever u post!!! u radiate so much good and calm energy AHHHH it would be amazing to have a friend like u :') 🫶🏻
If you want to read more Steinbeck I recommend East of Eden its one of my personal favorites
My favorite book is 100 Years of Solitude, my 2nd favorite book is East of Eden. You should definitely give Steinbeck a try!
Those books are my favourite!
Harriet Jacobs is so impressive, her writing is so engaging. Also love your dress! 💚
I always skip adds, but these bits you're doing are making it so much fun its hard to skip through lol
I've been meaning to read The Old Curiosity Shop for ages, now I finally have something to motivate me!
Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck is phenomenal!
you are my favorite youtuber of all time!! lysm emma, and wish you all the best in everything
Emmie! I'm so glad you're liking Steinbeck. I recommend ⭐East of Eden⭐ despite it being a lengthy book, it's so good that it feels short
oh the one emma chamberlain was reading?
@@manasvi4404 I'm not sure, haven't watched her since like 2016 lol. She has good taste if she read it tho 😌
A next level book of the month ad 🤣. At the start, it gave me Wes Anderson vibes.
I am DYING at your intro! Hilarious and well done!
Travels with Charley in Search of America by Steinbeck is one of my fave books ever! I love Steinbeck, I'm surprised you've only heard people dislike him
That opening ad - had me laughing so hard! But poor Emma, I DO relate to being stuck on what to read next with so many book choices! That said, your monthly reading planning videos are always such a delight. I'm excited about starting the Old Curiosity Shop and have downloaded the audiobook so I am excited about that. City of Brass has been sitting on my shelves for a while now, and it sounds amazing and up my alley, so you're motivating me to pick it up too.
I've only read Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck but LOVED that one, and have wanted to read East of Eden for a long time now. I feel like he's a favourite author and I have barely read anything for him...
you have the best adreads on the internet FR
I am here for the Emmie ad skits
your ad skits just get better every time
This is the first time of my life I watch an ad for a sponsor! It was so original and funny
Would love to hear your thoughts on Sorrow & Bliss! I just finished reading it and it's now a new all time favourite!
From a PhD student who studies early modern philosophy, start with Descartes over Hume! They are both great and fairly accessible for people starting out with philosophy. But much of Hume's project is critical and so it can be helpful to already have a good sense of Descartes and the Cartesian philosophy to see better what sorts of things he had problems with. The Discourse on Method is such a great place to start!
Emma. I just want to put this in the universe. YOU HAVE THE MOST SOOTHING VOICE I HAVE EVER HEARD. And it’s ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I’ve been HOOKED to your channel since this past weekend 🤷♀️ I’m sold every time I hear your reviews on literally anything 😂 Which btw, Phantom of the Opera = queued and ready to start reading today 💃 Thanks for making such awesome videos!
I finally started working and have no time for all the things that I love but at the same time I have seriously started valuing my time even more. My reading habits have also improved quite a lot. I guess keeping yourself busy is indeed the best way to stop overloading your head with unnecessary thoughts.
your ads are simply next level i love them so much
Random side note: I’m a psychology minor and in every one of my psychology/philosophy classes, there’s this on going joke where every time we hear Freud or anything Freud-like, everyone (teacher included) rolls their eyes and groans “Of course it’s Freud again” (respect is work, of course, but that man is everywhere)
I took an intro psych back in univ and prof was like: of course everyone wants to sleep with their mom.
Someone give this girl an Oscar. Her acting, in the beginning, is just *chef's kiss
emm, i love your dress ❤️❤️❤️
I also like the goat. And your sponsor ads. I like the goat and your sponsor ads equally. They give me so much joy
Steinbeck is amazing! Of mice and men is super short and worth reading. I also LOVED East of Eden when I read it for high school. It’s a really cool retelling of the story of Cain and Abel mixed with American history and it’s own unique narrative.
The only non skippable sponsorship
Your BOTM skits are always hilarious!😄
YES Steinbeck! If you're enjoying Steinbeck, then the next go-to's of his are Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden (my favorite book, ever). He's also got plenty of short(er) stories like The Pearl and Of Mice and Men if you want more but want to save his longer works for later.
I rewatched the sponsorship just because.
You are amazing !
i dont know there is something so peaceful listening to someone talk about books especially emma. It just feels like sitting in a light academia setting with the smell of flowers whenever i watch your videos and i love it
The Scarlet Letter is one of my favorite books, however, I think I also would have detested it if it weren't for the American Lit class I read it for!! I loved the discussions we had about it and it opened my eyes to so much symbolism that I wouldn't have noticed if I was just reading it on my own. Many of the topics in the book were also so thought-provoking. Hawthorne touches on the dangers of legalism, the importance of forgiveness (of yourself and others), women's rights, and the effects of guilt, among many others. I could rave about this book for days. I hope you will maybe like it better the second time around!! :)
These ad sketches you are doing have enhanced my daily well-being! Thank you!!! 😄💫💥
Big shoutout to Emma for making the only sponsorships that I actually watch all the way through. They have me dying. 🤣
So exicited about your summer course as I had my American module in uni a couple of years ago, and pretty much got the same authors.
Background: The Pearl of Great Price and the Parable the pearl ( Matthew 13 )
Loving these little comedy sketches you're doing. Very creative and funny!
Your American Lit class sounds just like a class I just took this year. Very excited to hear your thoughts on the readings! (Some were very tedious, so best of luck!)
As a senior Philosophy student I would def recommend getting some secondary reading because without any context they can be really confusing and hard to decipher
May I bless you on your newfound journey with the philosophies, I'll quote dear old Emerson that fits the effects of philosophy, "The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions."
steinbeck is one of my favourite authors of all time!!
I read The old curiosity shop in March. 3.5 to me. Great Expectations is still my favourite Dickens so far. Hope you enjoy your summer course!! 🤗❤🇦🇷
Omg Graceling was such a pleasant surprise for me, I hope you continue enjoying it!!
Kitchen princess was the first manga series i read as a kid! so nostalgic
That was one of the best sponsor plugs I've ever seen 👍🏻
I enjoyed the skit at the beginning. I really enjoy your theatrical humor.
I loved graceling!!! It was so good I really like Bitterblue, the third book in the series.
I majored in philosophy, and those two books are great places to start if you're interested in the history of modern philosophy. You would want to start with Descartes first and then move on to Hume. George Berkeley also gets grouped in with those two, particularly his work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Understanding. But if you want an overall overview of what modern philosophers are concerned with, you might want to start with Russell's The Problems of Philosophy, which is pretty short and clear.
i second russell! i’m doing a philosophy minor and that book is foundational. great place to start if you know nothing about philosophy.
Here I am, adding to the positive reviews of Steinbeck! I love everything I read from him, even Grapes of Wrath which was excruciatingly difficult to read because English isn't my first language.
Your commercial 🤣🤣
Heeeeey, that's my American lit textbook too! And we also read The Scarlet Letter (and have to write 3 assignments on it, ugh).
Steinbeck is WONDERFUL. He's probably the only classic American author I do like, haha. I love The Pearl so much!
That dress looks so cute! Where did you get it from?
aaa I absolutely loved The City of Brass! The second book is even better and I plan on finishing the trilogy this summer. Not sure if you’ll like it as much as I did since I did hear that some people think it’s a bit boring :/
omg emma you should be a publicist. you genius girl. I love your sponsor adds. ❤
Its my fav person again elevating my mood with her precious smile
oh my gosh so sweet, hope you’re having a wonderful week🥰
Emma, if you love Steinbeck I highly recommend reading Of Mice and Men. I read it in my eighth grade year and I loved it. I reread it again this year and fell in love with it all over again!
I really want to read Steinbeck's grapes of wrath many people recommended it to me
Book of the Month, if you guys are reading this, START SHIPPING INTERNATIONALLY.
That was the best ad I have ever seen 👏
I love The Pearl! I haven't read it in ages, and you mentioning it made me want to do a reread. Steinbeck was one of the few authors I read in school that I actually liked.
At the beginning, thats is the best ad ever
