I admire your range of reading, Emma. Most RUclipsrs merely read books that are popular at the time, but you read everything from classics to the latest releases! I've been binge-watching all of your videos for the past few months, and you have helped me discover books that I never would have found (or taken longer to find). I too am an English major; your videos on uni TBRs and writing essays have been immensely helpful. Thank you so much for creating such heart-warming and informative content!
Thats why shes my favorite booktuber. Not only does she have such a variety of books but she describes them so perfectly and you can really tell she’s passionate about it.
the ice palace for me is hugely underrated for its simple writing style. It proves you don't need complicated phrases and terms in order to write a great story, and for me the simple words actually make the story more impactful.
I absolutely adore the way you describe books; you really give them life! Do you write a script before you film or is it all just right off the noggin?

I love waking up to a notification of a new video from Emmie! Absolutely makes my day. My favorite book from January was A Castle in the Clouds! Thank you so much for recommending it, it was amazing and perfect for the winter ❄️🕯️
I also started reading Frankenstien in the month of January and love it so much. I have underlined so many passages, circled so many words, and just love Mary Shelley's writing overall. I'm only 25% through but think it'll be a 5 star for me too. My favourite read of January was Agatha Christie's, Murder on the Orient Express. It was a fun read, with a fantastic ending - perhaps the best concluding paragraph I've read to date. I think I'll read Death on the Nile and then go watch the film.
yes amazing! I think I've decided to write my next uni essay on Frankenstein but now to figure out what the heck to choose from in the book to explore!
'It was incredible but I didn't like it' - lol that was exactly my experience trying and failing to read Mrs Dalloway. I've loved her short stories though so I'm hoping I can make more of a personal connection with The Waves when I start that soon 🕯️
I can't wait to get "dowry of blood" since I'm really into the gothic genre in general and all of its retellings, I love it so much and on top of that both you and "Jean Bookishthought" recommended it and I love both your recs!
My favorite from January was The Hours, a novel that rewrites (?) Mrs Dalloway and it is SO GOOD!!! I really think you should read, Em! And the movie is freaking amazing too, highly recommend! Love from Brazil 💛
I've been reading my way through Tove Jansson over the last couple of years. I've read some Moomin books, some short story collections and novels. She is rapidly becoming one of my favourite writer's of all time. Plus I saw the film 'Tove' released in 2020 which is fabulous and I highly recommend it - if you can find it. I've got my 11th Jansson book scheduled in for this month, 'Travelling Light'.

I am a PhD student at the University of Vienna in Austria and we have had online classes for over a year. I am attending a face to face class next semester. It will be so weird to be back on campus! I mean I haven't actually personally interacted with a lot of fellow students. But I am looking forward to it.
I'm excited to hear that you are also trying to focus on your physical TBR this year, as I am doing the same! I would love videos on your physical TBR (whether that's how many, what genres they are, what series/books in particular you want to finish this year). I know I really want to read a lot of books that have been "stale" on my shelves for a while and determine whether I want to keep them when I move after college!
I started reading "Snow Country" because of this channel. And I love it!!! Looking forward to checking out more recommendations and featured books found here. Thank you, Emma ! I've only read 3 full books in January. "Golden Lads" by Daphne du Maurier, because I am obsessed with the Shakespeare authorship question. I find the Stratfordian 'theory' to be idiotic and just silly. Therefore I am a Baconian hahahah!! Also Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Travels". I enjoyed it but I think a lot of people would find it dated and overly dramatic and too focused on theatricality. And also I just read so much about art and architecture. I'm not going to read Banister Fletcher's comparative architecture book in it's entirety, but I have read large chunks of it.
@@emmiereads I read "The Sorrows of Young Werther" quite a while ago when I was more susceptible to those romantic flights as featured in the book. And I ended up going through a rather tumultuous break-up shortly thereafter. I've always thought Goethe was obsessive as a lover which does make things interesting. Eventually last year I read "Elective Affinities" which starts off great and has many intriguing aspects through the first half, but I should warn you by the end I was just baffled. It felt frustratingly half-baked in ways that seemed almost as if someone else had finished it, or that he had rushed it before heading out to a luncheon gathering hahahah,,,
in January I started to slowly make my way through A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I'm sad to say I rather enjoy all the misfortune. These books are just so amusing, sure they are repetitive and simple at heart, but that is precisely what I expected of them and I'm glad they are delivering
The boost of serotonin I needed ✨✨ Also, I don’t remember if I already commented this but I really think you’d like the book “Lore” by Alexandra Bracken. It’s all about the Greek Gods & Goddesses and their sort of descendants that try to hunt them to take their power. It sounds confusing but it is SO good and has truly surprising twists and turns!! 15/10 recommend
I spent months reading Mrs. Dalloway a few sentences at a time during lunch at school. I was trying to figure out what was so amazing about such a mundane book. Twenty years later, I've never stopped taking small moments to consider the world a little more closely. So while I didn't enjoy the book, per se, it did change my outlook.
🕯🕯 such an informative wrap-up! I always LOVE when you talk about books because of how much depth you go into. it always reminds me why I love literature and close reading. I have just bought both the ice palace and moomin midwinter on Kindle and will be reading them posthaste. thank you for always introducing me to beautiful gems of books and you yourself, the most beautiful gem 💕💕
You make me wish i could listen to audiobooks. It's impossible, i get so distracted! Am i the only one? 😟 I'm so glad you loved A Dowry of Blood. I read it in three hours and loved it.
No you are not the only one. I have the same problem, but I discovered that I like very much following the text while listening. Hopefully in time I won't be so distracted even with the audiobook only.
I always go on walks while listening so i get in some exercise while listening to a good story or i clean or paint my nails. But i definitely cant do anything more complex or do nothing otherwise i will get distracted.
I listen to audiobooks while doing something, that requires a different part of the brain not associated with language, like sudoku, mahjong, drawing, peeling and eating clementines very carefully etc. It helps me with my concentration, otherwise I will have the same problem as you :)
🕯 Can I say, you are the only booktuber I completely enjoy. And I would definitely recommend sisters of shadow. It has so much of that cottagecore + dark academia vibe.
Oh my! This video is amazing, Emma!! Love your thoughts and explanations. It really shows how profoundly you read and think about a book. And...an Avatar: The Last Airbender joke. Thank you. So much. Thanks💛💛💛 I'm aslo writing this because I love your videos, they make my mornings, evenings, hours after school (you get it🤣) I'm currently brushing up on my English, but boy, my vocabulary disappoints me. I feel like the more I study the less progress I make. That's so weird... Ok, enough of that😅 Thank you for all those heavenly descriptions and passion you have for reading and discussing books!
🕯 I had so many great reads in January this year! My first was Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr and it was an absolutely wonderful masterpiece, especially for those that love reading. It’s a tri-time period piece so it can get crazy but it’s totally worth it! I also read Wundersmith in the middle of my reads and my love for the Nevermoor series really took of with this one. I haven’t started the next book yet, I’m gonna give it some time, but I absolutely love it! And then I just finished at the end of the month All the Light We Cannot See, also by Anthony Doerr. A truly remarkable historical fiction look at WWII that I found really timely to read right now during the middle of the pandemic. I absolutely loved this one too, highly recommend!
🕯 So happy to hear you had such good start into the new year in terms of reading! The way you talked about The Ice Palace was so poetic and interesting in of itself and made me want to read it as well. I also had a great reading month, my two (now all time) favourites were If we were villains by M.L. Rio and Sister, Outsider by Audre Lorde
By the end of the video, I was laughing because I love Ice cream cake, Tolstoy's short stories and Mrs. Dalloway is one of my favourite books ever lol. But it always fascinates me to think about how we can all love and hate the same things, why? from where does it all come from? etc, etc. Anyway, how can you manage to read so much in a month?! I wish I could be like you Emma :D
Thanks Emma! Love your creative descriptions..ie ice cream cake. I read The Ice Palace as well this month. Loved it! The language was so sparse yet beautiful! Almost like poetry. I am now reading a novel based on a true event called The Children’s Blizzard. Another snowy story. I am riveted but only about a third through it.
I can't even find the words to express how much I adore Virginia Woolf and how much she means to me (My MA thesis was on her and Sylvia Plath, I even went to Monks House 4 years ago) and I always get soo excited when I see people talking about her on RUclips, but I totally understand that she's not for everyone (Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves are my favourite novels by her, especially Mrs Dalloway, because it was also my first Woolf). I wonder if you'd enjoy her essays more :) You really inspired me to read more winter books after this video :D I also have a strong urge to read the Moomins 😂
I've somehow read almost only mangas in January 😂 I'm thinking of picking up the ice palace, the way you talk about it is so beautiful ! Have a good afternoon🕯️
@@emmiereads I tried Mars by Fuyumi Soryo, and I loved it ! It’s a love story between an artist and a racer, both dealing with heavy trauma . Some parts aged quite weirdly thought ! I also read Last Quarter by Ai Yazawa ! It’s not as well known as Yazawa’s other mangas, and it’s also really short but I found it beautiful! It’s about a group of children trying to solve a mystery, and it’s also about ghosts, love and memory. I also read Sakamichi No Apollon, by Yuki Kodama. It’s a slice of life, we follow a solitary high schooler arriving in a new town in the 60s, and forming friendships through music and jazz ! It was really sweet !
The wheel of time was my comfort place through the pandemic. I’ve read one volume each month and as a huge Lord of the rings fan I can say that The wheel of time became one of my favorite fantasy series. The magic system will get better and better, the story will shift from lotr. Somewhere in the between books 6 and 10 the story starts to get boring but book 11 and 12 are the best books in the series in my opinion. I really wonder what you think about them :) Also Nynaeve, Moiraine, Perrin and Lan are my favorites too. It really is rewarding to see such female characters in high fantasy.
that's so impressive - and so glad to hear that they were a comfort, listening to the first book on dark snowy nights was the best companion. Definitely looking forward to seeing how the series progresses too
I read the cutest (and sad and funny) short story about a dog a few days ago, it’s called ‘Kashtanka’ by Anton Chekhov. Highly recommend! Also I sent a copy of my favorite book of 2021 book your way, I hope you receive it soon and enjoy it! 💕
I love watching and listening to your reviews. You live in such a beautiful country. I don't study online, because I also can't get used to it. I'm from New Zealand, and I love learning about other countries. Thank you so much for making my life a little nicer.
I’m trying to get through some of my tbr, but then I watch your videos! We have such similar tastes in books that I add tons of book each video. I love the recs, though!
🕯️ So glad you liked Eye of the World enough to continue! It gets better and less LotR as the series goes on! Also, highly recommend The Stormlight Archives, Brandon Sanderson is just a phenomenal world builder!
I also read Mrs Dalloway this january and oh lord what a book. I´ve never read Woolf before but I definitely knew how many people appreciate her work. Mrs Dalloway was just not for me. It was so chaotic but on the other hand beautifuly written and funny. I´ll for sure read more Woolf and I think that Mrs Dalloway gave a good overview of what to expect from the author.
Emma your videos inspire me to read more despite my really slow reading pace. Hopefully I can read as much books as you and be as profound and deep as you. 😊❤️
Hi emma! I just want to say how grateful i am for your existence in this world, you are the one who made me more into reading (especially classics) please keep making more and more reading vlogs cz i love it so much and i love you💗💗
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison was my favorite January read. Honestly, it felt like it was everything I had wanted Catcher in the Rye to be, because the stories are very similar, but Ellison says so, so much more in Invisible Man. Plus, Ellison's writing is top notch. A prophetic book to say the least!
I only read five books in the month of january and you read a whole pile of books! I wish I could read as fast as you, then I could re read books and read new books at the same time.
@@Cubehead27 I feel like everyones reading pace is different. My sister literally takes one entire month to read A SINGLE BOOK, EVEN THE SMALLEST ONES. But i on the other hand don't take that much time.
I feel the same way about Mrs Dalloway. I also read it in january, and I hated the process of reading it (the sentences were soooo long). I kept coming back to it though because it gripped me in a weird way I can't describe💫
Honestly, brilliant🕯to see from you today. Nice to hear your thoughts. I think, hesitantly, that I may end up in the same boat as you when it comes to Tolstoy. Like, I've only read Anna Karenina and one of his short stories, but both have been pretty lacklustre for me compared to how much people hype up Tolstoy. And he struck as mostly okay--though I did really like his nature writing. The way you put your thoughts, too, very much made sense to me. Those Moomin books sound rather interesting. Might have to look into them 👀.
Idk if this means anything but you were one of the reasons i got out of my reading slump!!! I love how passionate you are about books and inspires me to read consistently again 🥰
I've just bought the annonated Mrs Dalloway recently as it is one of my favourite books. love the moomin books as well. I re-read Middlemarch, Ulysses and Gravity's Rainbow in January and I am currently reading Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus.

I'm not going to read Banister Fletcher's comparative architecture book in it's entirety, but I have read large chunks of it.
amazing!! so glad you loved it, I've never read Goethe but he's definitely someone I want to get into in the future too
@@emmiereads I read "The Sorrows of Young Werther" quite a while ago when I was more susceptible to those romantic flights as featured in the book. It felt frustratingly half-baked in ways that seemed almost as if someone else had finished it, or that he had rushed it before heading out to a luncheon gathering hahahah,,,
babe wake up emma just posted a new video
in January I started to slowly make my way through A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I'm sad to say I rather enjoy all the misfortune. These books are just so amusing, sure they are repetitive and simple at heart, but that is precisely what I expected of them and I'm glad they are delivering
Awe thank you! I cannot wait to see what it is, that is so kind
The Dream Thieves and Miss Marple: The Thirteen Problems were both very intriguing reads for January. I am also reading Lord of the Rings this year.
I have just bought both the ice palace and moomin midwinter on Kindle and will be reading them posthaste. thank you for always introducing me to beautiful gems of books and you yourself, the most beautiful gem 💕💕
thank you! ooh I hope you fall in love with them
I love you and your videos. Soo soothing 💜
thank you so much
You make me wish i could listen to audiobooks. It's impossible, i get so distracted! Am i the only one? 😟
I'm so glad you loved A Dowry of Blood. I read it in three hours and loved it.
No you are not the only one. I have the same problem, but I discovered that I like very much following the text while listening. Hopefully in time I won't be so distracted even with the audiobook only.
@@silviafrassineti5214 maybe i'll try doing that too 😊
I always go on walks while listening so i get in some exercise while listening to a good story or i clean or paint my nails. But i definitely cant do anything more complex or do nothing otherwise i will get distracted.
I listen to them on 1.5 speed! I find that it’s easier for me to pay attention somehow …
I love watching your videos because they are just so calming!
🕯 I missed you so much so i’m catching up with the recent videos slowly so I wouldn’t run out of them 😂❤️
Oh my! This video is amazing, Emma!!
Love your thoughts and explanations. It really shows how profoundly you read and think about a book. And...an Avatar: The Last Airbender joke. Thank you. So much. Thanks💛💛💛
I'm aslo writing this because I love your videos, they make my mornings, evenings, hours after school (you get it🤣)
I'm currently brushing up on my English, but boy, my vocabulary disappoints me. I feel like the more I study the less progress I make. That's so weird...
Ok, enough of that😅
Thank you for all those heavenly descriptions and passion you have for reading and discussing books!
Your hidden humor is everything ❤️
🕯 So happy to hear you had such good start into the new year in terms of reading! The way you talked about The Ice Palace was so poetic and interesting in of itself and made me want to read it as well. I also had a great reading month, my two (now all time) favourites were If we were villains by M.L. Rio and Sister, Outsider by Audre Lorde
The Eye of The World is a young adult novel, so that's why you felt it, Emma. The series is out on Prime now, too. First series is this book.
Have a good afternoon🕯️
ooh which ones? always looking to try out new manga!
It was really sweet !
my favorite read this month was east of eden, i'm so happy i finally read that big chonk that's been sitting on my shelf for 8 years
The wheel of time was my comfort place through the pandemic.
Definitely looking forward to seeing how the series progresses too
Such a nice video to calm down with after a chaotic few weeks of uni. So grateful for your channel! 🕯❄
I read the cutest (and sad and funny) short story about a dog a few days ago, it’s called ‘Kashtanka’ by Anton Chekhov. Highly recommend!
Also I sent a copy of my favorite book of 2021 book your way, I hope you receive it soon and enjoy it! 💕
A very comforting video, as always. Thank you Emma, for keeping me company and motivating me to read more. Have a lovely day 🕯
🕯January flew by. Still can't believe February is almost gone. Though it is always a joy to see what books you've been reading 💜
I was just hoping for something like to come so I can add in my list! 😭❤
Definitely the most accurate Eye of the World review I've heard yet
RUclips doesn't seem to like candle emojis, though.
I loved the Mrs. Dalloway is ice cream cake analogy 11/10 🕯
🕯️ So glad you liked Eye of the World enough to continue! It gets better and less LotR as the series goes on!
Also, highly recommend The Stormlight Archives, Brandon Sanderson is just a phenomenal world builder!
“And everything changed when the fire nation attacked” lololol we could be great friends
I love these long videos, they're so comforting. My favorite January read was Midnight Horizon by Daniel José Older 🕯
watching this video and drinking my hot chocolate after a looong study day is the best thing! 💖
Emma your videos inspire me to read more despite my really slow reading pace. Hopefully I can read as much books as you and be as profound and deep as you. 😊❤️
***candle emoji*** My favorite read of January was Dante & Aristotle Discover Secrets to the Universe (sp?). It was a emotional little read.
Ahhh I always love your reviews! Definitely want to check out The Ice Palace and A Dowry of Blood 🕯
Hi emma! I just want to say how grateful i am for your existence in this world, you are the one who made me more into reading (especially classics) please keep making more and more reading vlogs cz i love it so much and i love you💗💗
thank you so much for this lovely comment, and that's amazing so happy for you lovely!!
If it makes you feel better I read slightly less than two. To you, Emma's a fast reader, to me she's basically a god at this point.
I loved hearing you talk about The Ice Palace; you are always so eloquent 🕯
Love the wrap up! Frankenstein is wonderful. Top of the list of recommendations I give. 🕯
I studied a lot today 🤭 And here's my reward 🤩♥️ Thanks Emmie 😘
yay! haha we all get soo darn excited when she posts! 🥰
Yay! Happy and proud of you that you studied a lot. Hope you get some rest❤️
Omg samee
My favourite read in January was Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. I was actually surprised how much I loved it! Such a concise yet deep book 👌
Idk if this means anything but you were one of the reasons i got out of my reading slump!!! I love how passionate you are about books and inspires me to read consistently again 🥰
i'm so honoured haha that's amazing! so happy you're loving reading again
I LOVE your videos so much. Thank you to recommend all these books. Your my comfort booktuber. 🕯️🕯️
I've just bought the annonated Mrs Dalloway recently as it is one of my favourite books. love the moomin books as well. I re-read Middlemarch, Ulysses and Gravity's Rainbow in January and I am currently reading Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus.
🕯I just love you and your videos, your sense of humor is perfect
Not sure if you've read it, but Flush by Woolfe is so enjoyable and set inside the mind of a doggo
