Let me add to the litany of people raving and recommending Steinbeck: Of Mice and Men is another wonderful yet heart wrenching short story. East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath are his two longest works, and both are well worth the read.
I read ten books this month, though half of them were for school. Can't wait for the trimester to be over! (we have trimesters instead of semesters where I live). Heartstopper is great, I can confirm it has the power to melt even the coldest of hearts 🐶
I just finished the picture of Dorian Gray, thank you for recommending it I didn't know where to start with the classics! Onto the wind in the willows inspired by your readathon!
I just finished reading it this week too! I have so many thoughts and not enough words to express them lmao but literally from the very beginning this novel absolutely consumed me with how elegantly written it was. like just the words themselves were soooo delicious
oh it’s one of my favourite books! I’m currently rereading it for a seminar but we only have two sessions for it and now I’m that annoying person that wants to continue talking about it at lunch 😅
Hello Emma! It's great to know you liked Heartstopper and Steinbeck. I recommend Grapes of Wrath, the most acclamed book by Steinbeck. His writing is really beautiful. I'm reading Kitchen Princess currently. It's gooood! Thanks for the recommendation! 😉😍
The transition from your phone camera to the new camera you got was like being thrust into a different reality: looks great Emma -- can't wait to see how your b-roll turns out with it!
Solid reading month, Emma! My May was a bit of a drop off from previous months but I am a few books ahead of goal so hopefully it won't hurt me. I am nearly done with Crime and Punishment! Love the videos!
East of Eden is my favorite Steinbeck and everything I've read of his is excellent. He tends to be all Hemingway was cracked up to be without the style gloss.
I watched heartstopper this month when it came out and it was exactly like you described! i haven't read the graphic novel ( i really really want to) but it was so heartwarming and good i just loved it! also the new camera looks great!!
I love listening to you talking about books. I've been reading so much technical literature in the last months, that it is quite refreshing to hear about artistic literature talked about in a so much loving way as you do. P.S.: you look great in any camera there is!
So glad to hear that you got your new camera, the picture and sound quality at the ending part are crystal clear 🤩👌 (not to undermine the previous quality or anything 😅) But so happy for you!! 😊😊👏
Your videos have been a beautiful break always, but especially for me the last several weeks. I admit I have been suuuuuucked into the nexus of the Johnny Depp trial. Every single day, every minute. It's been so interesting, wild and hits home in a way I can't explain. You've sprinkled something wholesome and grounding and beautiful throughout weeks of triggering, eye opening and (IMO) needed testimony. Mental illness, abuse, addiction snakes through our lives like a beautiful vine that poisons you while you're mistakenly feeling nourished as it engulfs your entire life. It's made me so sad for both sides, wishing healing for everyone involved. Your videos have brought this calm of "oh yes, this is my life now, this is how I'm here now". Emma, you're a dear sweet soul. Thank you for spilling it out all over the interwebs. We need it. ❤️
I'd 100% recommend Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". It was my first Steinbeck & wow! His writes brilliantly & was an instant 5 🌟 for me. It's also a short book but he definitely used the pages wisely. I'm busy reading his non-fiction on the WWII (he worked as an reporter) and just his introduction is already wonderful. But "The Pearl" is on my TBR! I'm looking forward to read it!
You should definitely read Of Mice and Men!! One of my favorite books ever & once you finish it you’ll probably start to notice a lot of references to it in contemporary media lol
You put all my thoughts of Mirabai into words! I'm so happy you liked it :) From my small research, it seems this is the only collection out there from her. Which is so so sad I wish I had 100 more lol
My favorite book from May was definitely The Overstory by Richard Powers. It was right up my alley and combined my interests/passions with amazing stories. Loved that one!
Hi, agree. Read it at least three times , just for the love of reading. I went to 7 grade only but wonder how’s the experience of reading it for a literature class..
I remember reading Of Mice and Men in high school and really liking it. I'd like to read more Steinbeck and have added him to a list of books I'm trying to get through. The problem with that list is I add about 20 books for every book I complete.
@@DesolateAura same here. I usually call my list "books I want to read before I..." and then add some random method of dying after that. Like, books I want to read before I am eaten alive by a herd of house hippos.
I bought the first two omnibuses (omnibi?) of Kitchen Princess for myself for my birthday this month and read them both. They were SO GOOD. The first one is great, but the second one is even better. There were frames that made me gasp. I'm not sure what's so special about it, but it's just so sweet and engaging and contains these really breathtaking panels. Love it so much!
i’m so happy seeing you love heartstopper because it is actually one of my favorite things in the whole world i would literally die if you didn’t like it
There are several other poems and charpais by Meerabai but they are in hindi and i think only this has been translated to english. I would recommend Palace of illusions by Chitra banerjee as it has similar tone to it and also one of the characters is Krishna.
I didn’t get as much reading done this month! I finished up a work contract and then started rehearsing for three more so I got a little busy hahaha But I did finish Food Wars 4 & 5 and am about to finish The Shell Collector by Anthony Doerr! I’m glad I picked up The Shell Collector, since I haven’t read any of his short stories. Brief little snippets of the human condition - wonderful. Next month I hope to get a few more! Also, I’m a fan of Hugo’s eye just staring at us during the video haha
aaaa Pedro Páramo is one of my favorite books ever, it’s so damn weird in a good way! Forever thankful for my Spanish & Literature teacher for assigning me this book
I finish reading also heartstopper (3 volumes), first love by ivan , harry potter the 4th one and candide and literally may is one the best reading month i have 😍
May? About 35% through Count of Monte Cristo (in the original ofc), and understanding why the redacted, abridged, and edited versions are very popular.
Hey Emma! I also read 15 books this month! Including Heaven by Mieko Kawakami, which was my best read of the month, as expected. I haven’t noticed if you’ve read Kawakami yet but you NEED to read Breasts and Eggs first. It is my favourite book of all time. Kawakami is a Japanese author and all her books are translated fiction. Breasts and Eggs is sorta of a insight on womanhood in Japan, absolutely stunning prose. Both Breasts and Eggs and Heaven were nominated for international Booker Prize!
Two Steinbeck books I would really recommend are Cannery Row and The Moon Is Down. They’re both very quick reads and maybe not as famous as some of his others but we’ll worth your time.
Hey, Emma! Hope you're doing well. I read Kafka On The Shore (it took me a whole month since I'm not used to reading long books), 1984, and Heaven. Kafka On The Shore was my first Murakami novel. It was definitely... interesting to say the least. It took some explanation videos to understand what was going on, but I liked that everything sort of intertwined and connected in the story. It was my first magical realism book. My favourite though was 1984! It was my first dystopian novel, and I was just so horrified and enthralled by the world George Orwell masterfully crafted. Also, the parts featuring torture and brainwashing in the book was just gruesome and appalling, and so bone-chilling. The concept of Room 101 was also pretty scary. Heaven was also a really interesting book which mainly focuses on two children who get brutally bullied in school, and my gosh, some parts of it was really hard to read, since you just wanted the best for these two characters. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed this reading month! The next book I'm going to read is Crime And Punishment.
I started the year multitasking: reading a new book, GoT, and an HP reread. At this point I’ve just ditched everything else and am only reading HP lol. During May, I read Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, and am close to finishing Deathly Hallows 😆😭
Also Emma, I love that no book is too small or unimportant to mention. I’d never think to count a 30 page book but it’s a good reminder that gold can be found anywhere 💛
Hey Emmie, since you love K Dramas, I'm pretty sure you'd love reading Flip The Script and I'll Be The One by Lyla Lee. I'm so obsessed with both of these books, I hope you read and love them🥰💗
steinbeck's 'to a god unknown' is one of my favorite books of the year so far, really intense for such a short read & the symbolism is stunning. highly recommend if you want to read something else by him before one of his longer novels
Kitchen princess is one of favorite manga because I read it on 8th grade and when I reread it this year, it brings back my school memories and how I felt when I first read it 🤗 so happy you like it
Heartstopper is amazing, whether it's the graphic novel or show. I wish I could forget it all and be able to read/watch it all for the first time again 💖 🍂
HAHAHA just watched this video 3 times in a row...more than the newest Star Wars show...lol...what's wrong with me...Emmie just makes me happy...that simple..lol..Fun vid as always... Thank you Emmie
Haven’t heard anything good about Steinbeck?!? He is So so good. I have read many by him. A cute one (non-fiction)is Travels with Charley. I picture you enjoying that one. It’s him traveling around with his dog! ❤
So encouraging….I love my bookshelf and all the books 📚there, sadly I’ve read there🤫 I been writing more this year, finally finished my first book, MB4H. Thank Emile.
May wasn't my best reading month, but Heartstopper ended up being a little gem that I didn't expect to love either!! Volume 2 was tooooo precious and I'm mentally prepping myself before I pick up volumes 3 & 4 😅
I actually never came across super negative things about Steinbeck so I was surprised to hear you did! Of Mice of Men is a classic in American high schools, I don't remember it much but his books East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are one of my favorite books of all time. Being born and raised in California, I love how much of his writing is steeped in the descriptions of landscape and nature of our beautiful land. I just read Cannery Row, which is a shorter novel that I would highly suggest you read next, it's so much fun
I'm SO happy that Emmie loved Heartstopper aaah as someone who's also not much of a fan of fluffy books either. I do read lots of YA Contemporary books but they're not based on love per se but Hearstopper just.. ugh it's not just ALL about love, it tackles everything in between and that just tops it all for me ❤️ Please please please watch the Netflix series! If you thought the novel couldn't get any better, it definitely could uwu Compared to April, May was a GREAT reading month for me too!! I loved almost all of the books I read (6 so far!). Tackled a new book genre and I can't be happier (Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mendel, PLEASE read it!!). Finally read the second book of the Finlay onovan series. Not as good as the first but it's still okay and I enjoyed reading it~ About to finish the Pearl (it's quite short) so yay I'm so happy!
And now you must read "Radio Silence" by Alice Oseman; Kat aka paperbackdreams will love you for it. My favorite poem in "Poems to Night" is the one on page 79 (Irschenhausen, September 1914) and begins with "At night I wish to converse with the angel,".
I read a good 9 books this month, and 4 were absolutely amazing new all time favourites. :) The 4 best were Citadel of the Autarch and Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It's one of the best written sci-fi series I've ever read. The writing is gorgeous, and it has some many layers and allusions and themes. If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino was so so much fun. It was a book about books, written out of love for books. It had super fun structural playing and stories-within-stories. Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer was a sci-fi written in an 18th century French style, with an unreliable narrator, so many moving parts, great prose, and frequent shifts in style and addresses from the narrator to you the reader. I absolutely loved it
@@futoijosei I really loved it. :) It's densely written at times, and self-referential and strangely structured, but it's fundamentally about books and about reading, and book for those who love books
I've read 4 books until now, but I if I finish the one I'm currently reading, it'll be 5 books in May for me. The one I'm currently reading is The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe, a surreal story of a teacher who visits a fishing village in the dunes and is tricked to live with a woman in a house at the bottom of a sand pit. Villagers expect him to help the woman, who lives alone, shovel back the sand that constantly slides back to the pit. A surreal, horrifying story and I love it.
My favourite book in May was No One Writes to the Colonel by Gabriel García Márquez. He himself thought of it as his best work and apparently once said that he basically wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude to provide context for this one (according to Wikipedia). It was the first proper book that I read in Spanish, which was quite overwhelming but ultimately very rewarding.
Perfect timing Emma! Your videos seem to get me excited about reading and I’m in a frustrating reading slump right now. I really want to finish War and Peace during the summer. Right now, I’m reading the murder of roger ackroyd and Blue period. PS: idk if you mentioned this in a previous video but have you done something to your hair? 🤔
That was so cool and interesting!!! I also had a great reading month. I re-read all heartstopper books.. Just ADORE them!! You have to watch the series btw it's gorgeous! I also read "Freedom: the story of my second life" by Malika Oufkir, in Arabic. Enjoyed it quite a lot actually! And "The lucky one" by Nickolas Sparks, it was really good, i enjoyed the writing, the story, and loved the characters so much.. And then finally i read "Season of migration to the north" also in Arabic.. and i have lots of weird thoughts and feelings about it .. still can't make my mind and say if i like it or not . Really need to re-read it someday.. and that's it
So sad you didn’t like City of Brass! (Also I find it funny that I get so many book recs from you and I always love them, but the few times you’ve read books that I consider favorites you’ve highly disliked them (eg The Alchemist, City of Brass) 😂😂)
The fortuna sworn series is SO GOOD I recommend this to literally everyone I talk to at the bookstore like 😩❤️ I’m so torn between Laurelis and Collith and literally peoples reviews and opinions are just like the twilight series lmao. I can’t wait for the next book
How do you read so much???? Please suggest me how to read more and utilise time. I'm struggling with my reading pace. OMG you're incredible girl!!!!!! Love you ❤️
If you ever have the time and patience, check out "Paradiso" by José Lezama Lima. I don't know how good the translation is, but it was done by Gregory Rabassa (same guy who translated "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas"), so it must be good.
All things pass, or to say better, all things pass through, they transcend. We transcend time and space in the simple act of walking to school. The problem with transcendentalism is ofc it's kind of one-way. Well, that's not completely fair to those who feel we can transcend in the other direction if we enlist the help of the right people.
not Emma and Jack posting withing five minutes of each other so it's like choosing between your parents 😩

Yes!!! And I didn't realise how cool Oscar wilde was!!
About to start this in June! (as per Emmie's rec too hehe) I never read any of the classics before so I'm excited!
Emma definitely got me into classics :)

I'm so happy you loved Graceling! I love this series 😊 The 2nd book is my absolutely favourite ❤
You have piqued my curiosity with Heartstopper, I really need something cozy and friendly to read at the moment
It’s also been made into a show on netflix as well so it would be cool to watch after reading!
literally the wholesomest series in existence
Love the bangs💖 Love you vids and love you 💛 Thank you for sharing your love of books with us!

P.S.: you look great in any camera there is!
This is so calming🥺
So glad to hear that you got your new camera, the picture and sound quality at the ending part are crystal clear 🤩👌 (not to undermine the previous quality or anything 😅) But so happy for you!! 😊😊👏
I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on City of Brass. So sad though because a fantasy set in that part of the world would be beyond enchanting!
What a joyous and productive reading month, Emma! I loved this reading wrap up and excited about your new camera vibes ☺️.
the camera switch gave me whiplash omg looks great!!
I still haven't met anyone who didn't enjoy Heartstopper. They are so wholesome 🥰

And now you must read "Radio Silence" by Alice Oseman; Kat aka paperbackdreams will love you for it. My favorite poem in "Poems to Night" is the one on page 79 (Irschenhausen, September 1914) and begins with "At night I wish to converse with the angel,".
I also loved how you described Steinbeck's writing... 👌
I read a good 9 books this month, and 4 were absolutely amazing new all time favourites. :)
The 4 best were Citadel of the Autarch and Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe.
I absolutely loved it
I love books about books. I just put If on a Winter's Night a Traveler on hold at the library.
Poems To Night was beautiful!❤️
i’m surprised you’ve never read Steinbeck, i think you’ll enjoy of mice and men it’s tragic and well written ive read it around 4 times.
My favourite book in May was No One Writes to the Colonel by Gabriel García Márquez. He himself thought of it as his best work and apparently once said that he basically wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude to provide context for this one (according to Wikipedia). It was the first proper book that I read in Spanish, which was quite overwhelming but ultimately very rewarding.
i'm reading East of Eden, Steinbeck is just great!
you need to read heartstopper volume 4 . it won’t be over cause volume 5 is in progress ! and you should watch the show !!
pedro paramo lets gooo!! i knew you'd like it
Perfect timing Emma!
Trying to finish War and Peace as well (I'm on page 627, started reading the first of April)
Really need to re-read it someday.. and that's it
Emmie, I'm not much of a reader but your channel is really calming. Keep up the great work👍
you need to read east of eden!!! one of my favorite books of all time
So sad you didn’t like City of Brass!
Soo soo happy that you loved Heartstopper🥺💗
you cut your bangs!! such a great look on you.
Recommendation: East of Eden by Steinbeck !!!!!!
omg whats your thoughts on transcendentalism? i had to write an essay on it last year
All things pass, or to say better, all things pass through, they transcend. We transcend time and space in the simple act of walking to school. The problem with transcendentalism is ofc it's kind of one-way. Well, that's not completely fair to those who feel we can transcend in the other direction if we enlist the help of the right people.
omg this video made me so happy!! im so motivated to read now tysm emma
