15 books! 📚 Nice. I'd say reading slump has officially passed. 100 years was a whole experience, Marquez writes like a dream. You're right, every single sentence is beautiful, thoughtful, and artful. So good!! I want to re read and immerse myself in this story again and find all the things I'm sure I missed the first time around. More read alongs! This was so fun!
@@Mia_M It's a lot to take in, for sure. IMO, however, so worth it. It's objectively a difficult book to read. Things happen so fast, everyone has the same names and the way Marquez writes makes you want to analyze his words. It's so good.
My favourite book of the month was also One Hundred Years of Solitude, it was such an amazing experience. When you said that it knocks the air out of you, I thought it was such an accurate description. I really couldn't agree more. :)
Emma! I FINALLY picked up some Rilke this month and i'm in love. Letters to a young poet was glorious, and book of hours absolutely blew me away. I've never had poetry speak to me the way his has. I can't wait to read more and everything rilke. Thank you so much for bringing his words into my life. Also, found 100 years of solitude at a thrift store and i can't wait to dive in!
🤩 Woot woot! So ready for this video! If you didn’t follow the move videos ONE would never guess that you are in a whole NEW city and apartment! LMAO btw cannot wait for your next MOUNTAIN TRIP! 🤓🏔
I totally understand your frustrations with skyward! For me I gave it 3 stars since I came to the realization that it was intended for a YA audience and not for an old man like me 😂 and all my criticisms could just be responded to by saying 'it wasn't for you'. Definitely give his mistborn trilogy a shot though, it's extremely worth it!
I read Mistborn at the beginning of the year and I really liked it! I haven’t read any of his other books so I can’t really talk about it, but Mistborn was good. Very happy that you liked to read those volumes of Hunter x Hunter. It only keeps getting better from there.
My favorite read of August was Phantom of the Opera! I read it because of you! So, thank you so much. I'm going to reread it because apparently the version I got was abridged. Anw, thank you so much, Emma! I have an extremely long TBR list (that I'm really loving) because of you and Carolyn. 💖✨
My favourite read of the month was One Hundred Years of Solitude; a masterpiece! Absolutely loved the unique writing, the sentences just felt so 'real' if that makes sense. And there are about one hundred little details I'll remember forever; can't wait to reread it and rly annotate it too. Thanks again so much for the recommendation 😊
Yess, looking forward to Dicken vs Tolstoy debate. My fav read of the month is `of Mice and Men'. Wow, I like the writing style of Steinbeck and his characterization. And also I read 'the catcher in the rye' which is my fav book of all time.
Mishima has become one of my favorite author's recently. I have 1 more book to go in the Sea of Fertility tetralogy and while book 3 was a bit of a step down, the first two entries are some of the greatest novels I've ever read
Hello, Emma. I just recently found your channel in YT. I have gone through some of your old videos and absolutely fell in love with you. Your book recommendations are amazing. I'm looking forward to read some of your favourites very soon. And I would like to take the opportunity to say that you look so gorgeous and have such a beautiful voice. the way you talk about One Hundred Years Of Solitude never fails to give me shivers, it's also my favorite book of all time!! my fav book this month was The Brothers Karamazov by my love Dostoevsky, very long and slow and boring at times but soso worth it. also special mention to Nausea by Sartre which was just too good and scarily relatable
I had started 100 years of solitude back when i was 14-15 but never got to the end (probably for the best because i didn't fully grasp it at the time) but I always knew that when i finally did read it i would love it and after hearing you talk so much about it i did! and i finished is a few weeks ago and i think it will also stay with me forever and i will just keep reading it again and again it's just simply amazing
Actually, my favorite book of August was One Hundred Years of Solitude, which I only picked up because you did! Thank you for that, it was absolutely phenomenal!
I really love Mishima ! My favorite one by him is Forbidden Colors, which is about an old scholar using a young gay man to take revenge on the women of his life. His most popular work is The golden pavilion but maybe keep it for later 😊 my favorite book I read this month was The Blue Castle by L.M Montgomery, and it became one of my favorite books of all times, really recommend 👍
favorite book this month: The Shadow of the Wind. Please read it if you love One Hundred Years of Solitude. (It's also my favorite book and TSoTW reminds me of GGM a lot, even from the first sentence!!)
Happy to see you happy n positive after last weekend’s video. New moments n that one gladly passed. Glad u finished all those this month. Inspiring n jealous here I’ll say lol. Have a great week n look forward to the next post.
Okay so I'm reading One Hundred Years of Solitude (almost finished) and I have this anxiety that I'm not going to find another book that moves my soul as deeply as that one does.... I mean I have no words 🤐
Hi Emma, I just found 100 Years of Solitude at my local thrift store,I want to read it because of your love of this book..but I hear so many mixed reviews. Love your earrings, love all things Celestial. I'm currently in a reading slump due to health issues, and anxiety. I'm currently reading F.Scott Fitzgerald "The Beautiful and The Damned", I don't like it as much as The Great Gatsby. Please post more videos..your videos help me forget my problems. Happiness, Cindy
My favorite book of the month was also my only book of the month. The Story of the Stone (or Dream of a Red Chamber) by Cao Xueqin and it's not even a real book because its the first volume out of five of a single book. And I haven't even finished that volume. But its in your ballpark from what I can tell so you'd probably like it.
hi! my favorite book i read this month was this super cute manga called emma. its about this maid who falls in love with the son of a rich merchant in victorian england, while also dealing with the many men who are obsessed with her beauty. it has such amazing vibes, and the art style is super cute. I think you would really love it!
Ahh Emma, I just really needed one of your RUclips videos tonight, I so enjoyed watching your wrap of August. I really want to reread A Room with a View, it's so beloved! P.S. I LOVE your blouse. So vintage and classic 🥰☺️
It’s a shame that you didn’t enjoy Gitanjali. Tagore’s short stories are great, with some wonderful descriptions of the countryside surrounding Kolkata.
i read stoner last year, i really liked it! also a room with a view is such a fun summery read also it's gabriel garcia márquez with the stretch in the "ma" :)
so thankful to you ... you explain that you should can as much as ... I looked this video that you and books are to read me .. as usually I can ... you give me also motivation to read books .... thz you all of your explain videos .... 🙂
I read the Broken Earth series when I heard it from you and it was also hard for me to grasp the concepts much because of the terms that I had to check in the glossary many times lmao. Though nce you start it and familiarize yourself with it, it gets easier. The first book really was so good! That "twist", if you can call it that was amazing. I can pretty much see us in a post-apocalyptic world like that for sure.
This month I read 10 books, 5 of which were from Romanian authors (me being, as you might guess, Romanian). My favourite books from international authors were “Britt-Marie was here” by Fredrik Backman and “The immortal life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot (wonderful nonfiction mixing science, medicine and racism in America).
Stoner was great! His deteriorating relationship with his daughter was the hardest hitting part for me. Butcher's Crossing, also by Williams, was great too. I haven't read Sailor yet, but I started his Spring Snow, which starts a tetralogy, and it is so beautiful. I'd recommend that. Have you read Tolstoy's Hadji Murat yet? It was really affecting.
I also read Room with a view in august because my high school english teacher recommended it to me, and I think it was my favourite read of the month. I believe E. M. Forster depicts the story and the settings beautifully and the book pleasantly surprised me!
If you want to know more about Mishima, read Confessions of a Mask. It's semi-autobiographical and a good entry into his ideas of beauty, death, and youth.
Just started reading 100 Years of Solitude. I’m taking it slow as I’ve chosen this novel for fairly intense note taking/ summarizing so I can keep track of who did what crazy thing. I am loving it so far, I can’t believe how many strange and interesting things can be squeezed into short descriptions of a family’s life.
My favorite book of the month was Chess by stefan zweig that i actually read because one of your hauls so I recommend you to pick it up it was amazing how much do i think about it considering how short it is and I believe you would love it.❣️❣️
@@silkysmoothstoat I CRIED reading the final chapters because of the beautiful writing. also Fermin is probably the best character ever written!! Ahh I really want to see Emma reading this book lol
This month was a good reading month for me, not because I read loads but because the ones I did read I generally enjoyed. Probably the favourite would be where the crawdads sing, but in an effort not to be basic I'll say Gallant by V.E Schwab, or maybe rereading the deathy hallows. I'm glad you had such a good month too!
I strongly suggest u to read "Love in the time of cholera" if u liked Garcia Marquez :) first book I read of him and the ending... the ending is everything
I personally found that book SO problematic, that it ruined the entire experience for me. And that is really holding me back from reaching for One hundred years of solitude.
@@loveletterstothemoon 100% agree with GGM being problematic.... but one cannot only read pleasant things with nice characters. one can enjoy a book while criticizing the problematic aspects of it.
@@mjcampos1227 yes i agree. But Cholera didn't work for me. The main character was an absolute d*ck and the romanticization of assault and pedophilia was in the least enjoyable 😂. Anyway, I would love to enjoy 100 Years.🌙
the influx of recommendations for murakamis a whild sheep chase ive seen in such a short amount of time is quite concerning but im sold i will be tuning in
I’ve been going through a REALLY tough time in my life right now and your videos have really been a comfort for me. Thank you for being you and thank you for the amazing videos. 🫶🏻
I am on completely the same page with One Hundred Years of Solitude, rereading it I honestly couldn't understand how any human person could have the capacity to write such a complex book so perfectly. Everything about it is exactly what it should be. It's almost to the point where I'm genuinely shocked nobody's made a religion out of it. Also all this cryptic gesturing at secret books and things has piqued my interest. I managed to read five books in August, which is well above my average so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself (especially since two of them were the Silmarillion and One Hundred Years of Solitude). One of them was also Chesterton's first collection of Father Brown stories, which was new to me and a really great time.
My favorite read of the month was A Psalm for the Wild-Built, which I listened to on audio. A beautiful short book about a monk who serves the god of small comforts in a solar punk world and they meet a robot that is trying to understand humanity. Would recommend to anyone who is feeling lost and unsure of their purpose and wants something cozy.
Ooh I love that you read your first Mishima & it's one of his that I don't even know! I'd recommend The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (standalone) OR Spring Snow (first in a tetralogy) to read next, would be curious to hear what you think of either. :) Also, one book I recently read & loved a lot was When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill.
My favourite book that I read is August was by far Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees. I absolutely adored this book and it is now one of my favourites of all time! It was weird and wonderful and you could never quite tell what was going to happen next.
Do you have a surprise for us, Emma? What is it? Well, you read a lot in August! I feeling the same about Stoner. I'm dying to read A Room with a View!
Honestly the next Sanderson book to read would be way of kings, it’s just a great example of what he can do and also is one of his best works anyways. I know it’s not the greatest point in the cosmere (the connected universe of several of his series) to start with technically, but it’s what I started with and I just felt that it’s such a stronger entry point than mistborn (which is still great), but way of kings just hits so hard for me.
I know what you are talking about whan you are trying to describe your feelings after having read A Hundred Years of Solitude. I loved that book soo much when I read it at high school some 30 years ago. Then, I wanted to read it once again and it was such a disappointment! I can't even find one single thing why I was so crazy in love with that book. Crazy, isn't it?
Altho I can easily sympathize, I found the re-read satisfying. The phenomenon you describe is not unknown to me, and others, too, I"m sure. Another RUclipsr I watch sometimes refuses to re-read her favorites for exactly the same reason you just described.
My favorite read of August was A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin which I reread for the first time in a *very* long time, and it more than held up. I appreciated it in ways I never did as a child or young adult.
I read the Golden Pavillion and Confessions by a mask from Yukio Mishima and i agree with you on the beautiful language that is used! The golden pavillion was a bit slow for me, but I really liked confessions by a mask. It feels very autobiographical and it was interesting to dive into Mishima’s mind :)
favourite book of the month is a manga i can highly highly recommend to anyone who just wants something sweet and fluffy without terribly much fanservice, and an actually good view on romance/women/rejection! 'shortcake cake' is the name, and im only halfway through vol. 2 now but its very quickly becoming a favourite series
My current favourite read is Babel by RF.Kuang... which is a jump out of my comfort zone, as these days I rarely venture outside of classics! I don't know if you've read it, as part of the Dark Academia genre, I couldn't see it listed on any of your previous vids - ???? I'm not sure when it came out in other countries as it's only just been released here in the UK. But if you haven't read it, check it out. It's all about books, colonialism, power, language and translation based around an imaginary translation tower at Oxford uni. A few chapters in and I'm totally hooked!
Swann's Way is more accessible than the other five are. I say this as I muddle through the sixth and final story, where Marcel continues to reflect on the women he meets, without ever really getting to know. They are a constant surprise and mystery to him, but to be honest, I think that Swann was his first true love, as impossible as it would have been.
I can totally understand why you didn't like gitanjali. Tagore just hits different in bengali!! I would recommend Tagore's novels more than his poetry like chokerbali(irritation of the eye), ghorebaire(home and the world), strir patra(the letter of the wife). All of these have translations.
I finally caved and bought a Murakami book cuz of you mostly lol, I got Kafka on the shore and im excited to read! I was holding back for a while and am still worried about reading his work cuz I've heard about his infamous writing of women in his books, but I am so curious to see what is it about him that everyone loves
My favorite book of the month was Heidi in the original German. I read it as a child in English and it was one of those stories that sorta stayed with me. I read it in German while backpacking in the artic fells of Finland, mostly by a lake above the treeline, and it was perfect.
I have read only one out of these 15 books - Stoner. Undoubtedly, it is a classic novel, very good, a must-read, but I agree rather depressing story. One hundred years of solitude is now up in my top priority TBR books. So far I’ve only read his ‘Living to tell the tale’ and fell in love with his writing. So good! Murakami also moved up in my TBR list of books. My book of the month was ‘My Little China Man’ by Alma M.Karlin. She was one of the first European women who alone circled the globe (Wikipedia). She was a very interesting woman and a brilliant writer!
Yes, Kundera is fabulous. My two favorites are Laughter and Forgetting, and The Joke. I particularly like The Joke because the concept of re-education has always fascinated me.
I also read 15 books in August although a few were novellas. My favorites were Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley and The Trees by Percival Everett.
My favourite August book was No one writes back by Jang Eunjin (Korean Library of Literarure edition). Other amazing reads were 1Q84 and Season of Migration To The North. I love your recommendations and you have definitely influenced me on buying my first Mishima (I decided to buy Life for Sale because it has such a pretty cover haha). I'm so excited for you and your Murakami journey since he is one of my favourite authors! I love your videos so much
Beside the ending, for which Marquez deserves notice, I would say his biggest accomplishment in 100 Years is making the ordinary, humdrum lives of the various characters seem worthy of a story.
I think the character of Ursula was a wonderful invention, and yet not an invention but an evocation of the incredible women who have existed in our world across millenia and have exhausted themselves in the service of family and community.❤️
@@oak_leaf Poor Ursula, when the kids were treating her like a rag doll!I liked when she said no matter how old they are a mother has the right to smack her kids on the behind.😁
Great commentary as always 🥰 Re: Mishima, I’d say coming off of that one you might try THE TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN PAVILION. Also a teenage protagonist and covering some of the same thematic preoccupations and with a wild premise wherein the protagonist falls in love with the titular temple.
Just finished reading ''Notes from the deadhouse'' by F. Dostojevski. Not my favorite book of the month, but definitely worth reading at least once. I would recommend it. Thanks for your interesting video, I hope to read ''100 years of solitude'' soon :)

Also, one book I recently read & loved a lot was When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill.
I would love to hear more of your thoughts in Icefields! I just finished it. I absolutely love it.
Favorite read of August was Ocean Vuong's "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous" though I am savoring it and it will likely be my Sept favourite as well.
For some reason I had a feeling you would upload today. Thank you for the video as always 🤍
My favourite book was The Man In The High Castle by Phillip K. Dick. A sci-fi book with a lot of themes worth pondering about.
I love his other books a scanner darkly is possibly my favorite … never read High Castle
I'm dying to read A Room with a View!
fave of the month? none other than one hundred years of solitude😎😎😎😎😎
Crazy, isn't it?
what didn't you like the second time around?
@@jmsl910 Can't tell for sure. Everything was so boring.
Altho I can easily sympathize, I found the re-read satisfying. The phenomenon you describe is not unknown to me, and others, too, I"m sure. Another RUclipsr I watch sometimes refuses to re-read her favorites for exactly the same reason you just described.
Have you ever read Fahrenheit 451?Would you recommend?
ohmygosh YES!!
@@jmsl910 Thanks mate
Have you read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Worth a read.
Hi Emma!! My favorite book this month is The Secret History. I can't stop thinking about it 👉🏼👈🏼
yasss the secret history is also one of my all time favourites, its such a masterpiece
There is a version of Gitanjali translated by Tagore himself...I haven't yet read it though:)
was the read along on IG?
I loved Stoner . John Williams is so unknown . Butchers crossing was another Williams novel that was good .
You have me convinced to read Hunter x Hunter! I need a new manga!
Eee hope you love it🥲
You're the first person who makes me want to read Forster! The way you talk about A Room With a View... 👀
i also read it in a day. i didn't cry, however
Hi ! My fav of august is A la recherche du temps perdu (the first one). Thanks for the video 📚
Amazing to see you transform from Girl Wonder to Wonder Woman, seemingly overnight!
So glad you checked out Stoner! Love the video: )
Hi Emmie, i think you should czech out Milan Kundera books. "The unbearable lightness of being" is one of my favourite books of his.
I absolutely loved The Broken Earth Trilogy!
The part when she couldn't see and reflected on her family was my favourite
@@oak_leaf Poor Ursula, when the kids were treating her like a rag doll!I liked when she said no matter how old they are a mother has the right to smack her kids on the behind.😁
Tagore self-translated Gitanjali so I would find that version, it should also incluede a foreword by WB Yeatss :))
My favourite book of August was:
"The Girl Who Drank The Moon"🌒
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata was my favourite read this month. That book is a wild trip!
I recently bought The Sailor blah blah and I'm so excited to read it when it arrives :)
The best comfort channel 💚
