There’s a graphic design reason you don’t want a face on the cover, too! There’s a really interesting article from AIGA about book cover design, where they say that if there’s a face on the cover, that face ends up being projected onto the character and takes away from the reader experience
I tried so hard to get into the Shatter Me series in high school but something in me was like “Girl, it’s not worth it”. Also, if there is an annoying protagonist…I can’t do it 😅
I went to Korea Last summer and visited Sokcho. Staying there and hearing stories from some local people broke my heart. It has really made me hungry to care for others more. Learning and listening before you speak.
I read Winter in Sokcho a few years ago! I forgot I read it until you started talking about it. I remember I loved it. It was a little gem. Very unique plot and beautiful writing.
That is such a beautiful description and analysis around 17:30, the peaks of these mountains are longing in a sense for the ocean, uh so good Emma eloquently beautifully said! 🥰 🫐🍎🍇🍉
ahh it's so weird that you're starting to write your essay on gun island when I just turned my gun island essay in today! I feel like coincidences are such a big part of the book so it feels strangely fitting that my fav booktuber is starting their essay on it right as I finished mine
Hey Emma, I only read Shatter Me book series a while ago to improve my English skills, and while it's definitely junk literature, it serves its purpose for entertainment. I found it fun to practice with the vocabulary used in the series. By the way, I always enjoy watching your videos and having fun with them, greetings!!.
My fav Amitav Ghosh book is The Glass Palace. Its a gem in storytelling, an epic set across Myanmar and India during British rule. I highly recommend it.I'm planning on rereading it but I've got tons of books on my TBR list ( including Winter in Sokcho and Convenience Store woman).
I haven't read any of Amitav Ghosh's contemporary books but one of his earlier books(I Believe his second work)The Shadow Lines is the only book I have given 10/10 this year. It's very different from Gun Island (it's a family drama) it also probably has the most accessible stream of consciousness writing I have read, highly recommended
Really Emma I've opened this video by accident but I couldn't stop watching it, i just got so enchanted and fascinated by your way of talking about books and literature plus your voice is sooooo relaxing. Enjoyed this video a lott :)))❤️❤️
Sub-plots are practically the distinction between short fiction (0), novellas (1), and novels (2+). Another excellent discussion, Emma. Brava for your insight and sharp wit.
i read amitav ghosh's the hungry tide for my environmental lit class and had very similar feelings as you did with gun island! it's a fantastic story with so much interesting commentary on history, politics and its connection to identity, and human connection with the environment, which i loved it for, but the dialogue felt so unnatural. the characters themselves seemed to exist to just verbalize information to the reader, which put me off.
the way you feel about latitudes of longing is how i felt about "someone who will love you and all your damaged glory"! the first story was so gripping that i wish it was only about the couple-- everything fell flat after that.
I agree with you about some of the elements of Latitudes of Longing (which is a banger of a title). I was really immersed in the beginning, but then felt like I had to move on from those characters and that part of the story just as I'd fallen in love with it. I think the book was very ambitious and maybe a little too ambitious. At some points I felt like the meandering nature of the book lost me a little, where I felt like maybe I had missed something. I thought it was beautifully written though.
I think a really great resource for your essay on Gun Island is "Once Upon a Virus" by Diane Goldstein. It's about AIDS legends and how beliefs spread, people interpret their meaning, and how that informs their actions. It is truly about how ideas and legends spread like a virus. Good luck!
Interesting list 👍🏻 I read six books in March: Watchmen(3/5) Family Matters (4/5) Flauberts Parrot (5/5) Oracle Night (5/5) Gullivers Travels (4/5) Story of the Eye (3/5)
"What Dan Brown would do if Dan Brown were more literary and more concerned with ecology" is reasonably high praise. But not too high. It's a bar that can be jumped by the average author. And that's okay.
i'd like to recommend a book to you that i read in march and that's in memoriam by alice winn. it's a lovestory between two soldiers at the western front during WWI. they have to wrestle with their feelings for each other while constantly being confronted with the death of their friends and the horrors of war, not knowing if either of them will get out of this alive. this book turned me inside out, it's beautifully written, it's romantic, it's horrific, it's devastating. definitely the best thing i've read in a long time and i really recommend it. i hope you get a chance to read and that it gives you as much as it gave me.
Your hair looks so cute today and I love that sweater. Also, congrats on the Hawaiian tan lines. 😁 I just requested Gun Island from the library, so we shall see. 🫐 🍉 🍓
Hi Emma! I'm currently reading Hamlet, by Shakespeare. In March, i've read Mansfield Park, by Jane Austen; Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan, and Death in Mesopotamia, by Agatha Christie. I'm dying to read Winter in Sokcho.
can’t believe I’m from Kolkata and I’ve never read any books by Amitav Ghosh 😭 thinking of starting with The Glass Palace and then moving ahead to the rest, looking forward to your uni journey! sending lots of love and hugs ❤️

Hi, I also mostly buy from the Book Depository, I'll really miss it! The only alternative I know of (with free shipping) is Blackwells. I hope it helps
Emma! Shatter me sounds so cool! Of course the writing would be bad tho, lol 😪 but the premise 😩.👌😣 also, I dont wanna finish david copperfield!! 😖 Please emmaa!! 😖😓
I just finished Happening by Annie Ernaux and let me just tell you it’s my second 5 stars book of the year! It was amazing! I really recommended it to you, Emmie 😊 Also I just realized there’s a movie about it! 🥭🍊(a tangerine not an orange lol)
the second installment of the shatter me trilogy is horrible in my very very humble opinion 😭😭 the characters feel so different from the original trilogy and the story itself is so out of pocket but i'm definitely in the minority with this opinion so i'm excited to see what you think of it 👀
Do you have any book reccs on Burma (Myanmar)? My family are Karen (fled the junta many years ago after brutal raids on their village). I know you're doing books around the world so thought I'd ask :)
idk why but i have a huge dislike for book covers with eyes or faces of people on it lol
Me too! Especially random shirtless men 😭
Same💯
I hate it more when it's an actual photo, when it is a drawing it really depends on the style
And movie posters. I HATE IT 😂😂

Oh my god same. I just couldn’t 😭
Ugh me either, I read maybe half of the first book back in 2015 and had to stop...I was shocked to see it at the bookstore on the TikTok display 😂
@@kayjmal well it is tiktok
You really took one for the team reading the Shatter Me series 😭 can’t wait for your full review lol
Always a joy to hear/see you ranting about the books you've read and not cared for 😂🍓

The quality of this video is chefs kiss 😗🤌
Hey Emma, I'm currently reading Dickens A Tale Of Two Cities, I love this story ! 🍇
Oh Emma’s violet grape earrings. I didn’t know they had an emoji 😮
Oh that’s def my fav dickens‘s book
When you were talking about that book Latitudes Of Longing it reminded me of the movie Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
You uploaded right when I was looking for a video of yours to watch in the background for my note-taking lol

I cannot thank you enough for introducing 100 years of solitude to me. I am so much obsessed with this book. oh my god!. Thank you so so much emma😊
After so many years this is the first time I’m learning of the plot of shatter me 😭
Same, I hear so many people talking about the serie like we should know what it's about 😅
i read amitav ghosh's the hungry tide for my environmental lit class and had very similar feelings as you did with gun island! it's a fantastic story with so much interesting commentary on history, politics and its connection to identity, and human connection with the environment, which i loved it for, but the dialogue felt so unnatural. the characters themselves seemed to exist to just verbalize information to the reader, which put me off.
I think you would love "Like a charm" on audible, it is a middle-grade-ish magical realism book, it is sooo heart warming
Ooh speaking of heartwarming and middle grade, check out Kate DiCamillo's _The Beatryce Prophesy_ it's so cute
the way you feel about latitudes of longing is how i felt about "someone who will love you and all your damaged glory"! the first story was so gripping that i wish it was only about the couple-- everything fell flat after that.
I love your voice, honestly you would be a great teacher
🫐 Always love listening to your videos with a nice pot of tea while I paint 😊 hearing you talk about books you don’t like is always entertaining 🤣
Commenting late for the engagement but most importantly for the awesome book reviews. Already added Sokcho to my list 🍇🍓🍒
My fave fruit emoji is 🍊 and also . Thanks Emma for this March wrap up!! :)
“im so excited to start my essay today” i’ve never heard those words combined together lmao. I wish i was like this😭
Hi Emma, of course I am still here. I am so glad you made time to read the book :)
Gun Island sound so up my alley and I’ve never heard of it before!! Excited to pick it up soon
I have not been reading much non-school related stuff at all but I am sooooo close to the end of the semester and soon I will be free 😊🍊

I swear that you and I read polar opposite things. About once every six months, I find a book that both you and I have read... still watching though.
your cardigan is fabulous
I’m always so happy when you post. 😊😊 you look beautiful
Hey Emma
I'm guessing you heard the news about the book depository shutting down
I used to buy my books from there only upon seeing your recs videos
It's easier for Non US/UK based people ,
It was easy for us to shop from there
But now that this happened
Can you do a video where you talk about other options for buying books online (like alternative of book depository) other than amazon because it can be very expensive for a lot of us
Thank you
Sending you love and the biggest hug ❤️
And I hope you're doing well ❤️
Hi, I also mostly buy from the Book Depository, I'll really miss it! The only alternative I know of (with free shipping) is Blackwells. I hope it helps
