Usually, I will always say I like the characters from Tolkien's books best. As incomparably brilliant as Peter Jackson's films were, a movie can never take the time to show the full depth and history of every character. But with that said, I think Billy Boyd as Pippin had so much charm and was just so stinkin' perfect that watching him is a joy all its own.
Not only did Billy Boyd did a wonderful job of giving Pippin a charming quality that makes it hard to stay mad at him BUT he has the singing voice of an Angel. I got chills when Pippin sang the HOME song. Nice job Mr. Boyd.
I’m biased when it comes to Pippin. (That’s my hobbit) I enjoyed Mr. Boyd’s performance in the movie his character always me smile, I also enjoy Pippin of the book. The Gandalf in the book was way more hasher to him then in the movie. Pippin couldn’t even look in a certain direction without upsetting him. It truly made me feel for him.
Mr.Tolkien Painted such a vibrant tapestry with not only the landscape but the way He introduced ALL the characters the reader got to know each One .... in the Movie Mr.Jackson was hamstrung by the all mighty dollar AND People's short attention span I think.... I'm grateful that Mr. Jackson did Such a Wonderful job with those constraints but I'm echoing Others.... There is No replacement for the Book's......
Tbh Jackson did it as best as anyone probably could adapting the story in a way that didn’t really leave too many open ended questions unless it interested the viewer specifically. Tbh he did an amazing job with how he didnt include unnecessary characters such as Radagast the brown, since he had almost no impact rather than a single scene. Not only that i doubt anyone would have put as much work into the tales as Jackson did…the man and other artists hand drew every single scene from beginning to end like a comic, i doubt many if any producers at all nowadays would put that much work into a movie like Jackson did. It also goes to show Jackson really loved Tolkiens work by putting as much effort into the trilogy as he did.
Pippin is my favorite character of all time, I relate to him the most but I do think the fellowship tend to pick on him a little too much imo but I love them all and especially love Billy Boyd 😊 thanks for this video 🤗🦅
I love how the book gives a clearer picture of his character. They did their best in the movie with the time and deep characters and story that needed to be told.
What-if video idea for you to do: What if Gandalf never fell at the Bridge of Khazad-dum and continued with the fellowship to Lothlorien and on forward?
it'd be AWESOME if you guys did videos for each of the major battles in the first age, or maybe one video that recounts each of them. unless you did this already!
I think Pippin gets blamed unfairly for what happened in Moria. A stone falling into a pool of water is a rather common thing in cave systems, and the attack didn't come until the next day and many miles away from where he dropped the stone. I honestly don't think that Pippin had anything at all to do with alerting the orcs to the presence of the Fellowship in Moria. In the movies, it's obvious that he was the cause of the trouble, but in the books I think Pippin is completely innocent.
The Pippin of the books was the better of the two. In part because his character had more depth. Pippin and Merry at the Long Expected Party were over done. I know, I know, PJ was foreshadowing and building to Gandalf's "Fool of a Took". But that's the point; the character arc of Pippin was much greater in the books
Mae Govannon Mellon! Pippen from the books is way taller, and more bad ass than Pippin from the movie. No offense to PJ, I understand the limits of turning this into film. Excellent analysis as always! Keep up the great work Mellon! "ECTHELION!"
Wow, I didn’t realize Pippin was so young compared to the other hobbits in particular. He and Mary. would’ they have died before Aragon? What is the average lifespan of a hobbit anyway? :)
I believe the average Hobbit lifespan is a hundred years. Some die earlier, some live longer. Sam's wife Rosie died at 98. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins' husband died at 102 which was considered a respectable age. Hobbits like Bilbo and The Old Took are outliers.
@@jamesvalle9079 that’s interesting. I thought the general consensus was hobbits lived a bit longer than regular humans and Especially when there’s comments like Pippen was in 20s which is still considered adolescent. If I’m wrong on that, please someone correct me.
It seems you made a mistake. You said hobbit coming of age is 33 and pippin was a year younger than that when he returned from his journey but that he was 28 when they left. They were only gone for a year so that math doesn’t work.
Used to be that way in real life (especially in rural areas). When one has 7 aunts and 7 uncles and they all have (or try to have) 14 kids one winds up with lots of cousins. People used to have shit tons of kids just to have farm hands that didn't have to be paid anything but food, boarding, and (maybe) some love.
Pippin was a child. talks about Baggins in Bree at the bar, touches the dead dwarf in Moria, looks in the Palantir, doesn't listen to Aragorn and runs yelling Frodo's name at Amon Hen, mentions Boromir's death before he should have while traveling to Gondor, crying out when he sees Frodo's dwarf armor at the gates of mordor. he was literally a liability Merry knew the deal, Pippin was a child
Tolkien is the supreme author - in the fictional world. Jackson should stay in his lane and just depict what Tolkien wrote, not alter characters and events. Literally all the characters are better in the actual author's writings.
I agree the book is better and has more and in addition to differing information... But PJ doesn't need to stay in his lane - in order to make the LoTR films he had to trim it down. If not for the films a whole generation+ might not have been introduced to Tolkien at all.
I have finally found a version of the Lord of the Rings that was made in the 21st century and I am so incredibly grateful that Andy Serkis has read the unabridged version of the book and I am truly content 🎉 I noticed others responding to a question, if so I am sure you already know that I dislike the films, mostly because they lack most of the story and just made a typical dross Hollywood movie with nothing of interest for me.
@@jordanmince7613 why did Glorfindel fall only to be replaced by an unnecessary love interest, and believe me that list goes on and on. Ergo why I am so happy for the unabridged version of the book that I can no longer read myself 📖

Well said man!
I didn’t realise that Pippin is essentially considered a child by hobbit standards in LOTR! Explains his choices.
Book Pippin killed a troll and helped take back the Shire, so book Pippin has to win. But the movies did a great job with the character.
I'd say they're pretty close to equal. Fantastic character in book and film.

Great video, i was thinking last week you couldnt do Merry without Pippin.
My personal best member of the fellowship.
Of course you can’t have one without the other 😁
Exactly, having one without the other is like only having one-half of the pear, I hope that made sense.
Fool of a Took is the best line.
Pippin was a straight G I love the underrated characters there just as great !
probably my favorite character, aside from Sam, Aragorn, and Gandalf.

My best friend since freshman year of high school is named Galadriel after the lord of the Rings. And her daughter is Celebrian

I like to think that Eru chose each of the fellowship for a reason.

Yes! I'd love to hear this!!
Guard of the Citadel, indeed!
Good old pip he is a child at heart !
Books for sure! I definitely enjoyed him in the movies though.

👍👍
Pippin of the books.
I've always thought there was a spell on the Palantír that would attract any hobbit to look into the ball.
Without Pippin... they would have lost... no Gandalf the White, no Battle of Pelennor Fields
Okay, I'll go watch lotr again..
The book Pippin of course.
I will go with Pippin in the books
You can't have the movie Pippin without the book Pippin, so the one from the book is the greater one.
Well done!

Book Pippin is greater!
He has more depth and layers than Movie Pippin, who's mostly supposed to be silly and cute.
