The Rock Foundry SDX - In-depth review of Toontrack's new expansion for Superior Drummer 3

- I had the chance to test the new Rock Foundry SDX from Toontrack, the first SDX expansion for Superior Drummer 3. As I had expected, it's a huge souding sample library: Big, open drums from Ludwig, Gretsch, Yamaha and Ayotte, recorded (once again) in the tremendous live room or the Warehouse studios in Vancouver, Canada.

Really a fantastic job Mike! You're doing such a great job with these reviews/tutorials! I do not typically use this type of software, but I love learning about it. Thank you as always for sharing your insight and experience. Have a beautiful day!
Fantastic, thorough review as always Mike. Thanks for taking the time to go into such detail about this expansion. 18" hi-hats! That's crazy!! Realllllly tempted to click the "buy" button :)
Chris Baker Yeah, those hats are crazy! Very special ;) As I said in the video, I‘m probably the wrong guy to ask if one may need this in addition to SD3 ;);)
I agree I think you found your thing here with these reviews!! Keep on rockin Mike!!
Awesome man. I always learn a lot watching your videos. I will use this one day.
Hey man, thanks for watching. We're living in great times in terms of music. Samples won't replace a human drummer, but they can help us as musicians to provide a better sound - and that's what our audience is looking for at the end, right? Never hesitate to contact me at any time when you have questions about it.
Mike Luke thank you I really do appreciate that. But I agree man we are living in the best times
Great videos and reviews, like always ;)
Cheers, Anton!
Awesome as usual. ....
It's cool that you do all these reviews about OTHER people and OTHER's software, but I would love to see more MIKE on this channel, YOUR videos and covers man, it's YOUR channel!! :-)
Mick Young Hey Mick, thanks so much for your kind words ;) There will be covers coming that I play, just barely found the time to play and practice recently.
Amazing!
Thanks!
Great video! Super in depth.. subscribing! & picking up Rock Foundry soon.. hope it goes on sale just a teenie bit haha
Hey Andrew, thanks for subscribing. Glad you like it. I wouldn't bet on the sale for a brand new SDX, to be honest ;)
Great video Mike, I did watch the other video to. Awesome sounds but I do own The warehouse rock already. I think I'll buy the progressive foundry this week. 40% of! Did get a copy for free, you are a lucky man, you deserved it!👍🍺😎
Hey Mike, big fan of your channel! For some reason I can't choke the cymbals in this SDX when playing on my Roland cymbals. Do you have any idea why this would be? I can choke in all the other SDXs and the core library. Also, I can't get the ride bell sound. I've tried the Learn function and the bell works then but it also changes the bow and edge to the bell sound too. Thanks!
Great review Mike! This is a good overview to make a buying decision (and of course i will ;-) ). I love this Brady snare with it's ringy sound, too. This is a little limitation with the Toontrack snare and tom sounds, many are not open enough for my taste
Yeah, you are right. The Progressive Foundry has some nice ringy and open snares, too.
Loose Clutch is like the articulation for a Lars Ulrich Playing Style, Nicely done Toontrack !
GatoPaint Yeah, exactly! Really like it
Great explanations and insight. In your opinion, which preset would be most suitable to the the famous Back'n'Black or (my personal favourite) For Those About To Rock sound?
I'm afraid there's no preset included that matches the famous AC/DC sound. But you can try to mix it on your own. Or check out Toontrack's expansion "Big Rock" for EZDrummer2.
Nice vídeo friend :)
Thank you, Jose
If I’m relying solely on the SD3 will the td 12 work fine with Jobeky drums?
I am pretty sure it will work.
Hi Mike. My name is Javi from Spain. I wanted to ask you a question and I did not know exactly where. I just purchased the SDX THE ROCK FOUNDRY. I have an edrum DRUMTEC brand with a ROLAND TD17 module. To expand my physical drum kit, on the rear AUX output, I have a splitter (for the crash 3 and floor tom 4).I'm using the REAPER DAW. When I connect the edrum to the laptop via USB, it automatically recognizes all the pads and also assigns them the correct instruments. However, when I hit the pads I mentioned above, it triggers a crash sound in both cases. I've tried the "learn" option, and even though I assign it a different instrument, it still sounds cymbal in both cases. It is as if by default that sound is assigned to both pads. Is there any way to change de midi mapping? If the learn option does not change my instrument, is there an alternative way to do it? Thanks.
Make sure you set Superior Drummer to Roland TD17, then try the learn option. Always worked for me that way.
What’s better metal foundry or rock foundry for classic rock n pop?
You can use both as it’s heavily depending on your mixing decisions. Rock Foundry is probably easier to use as the samples are pre-processed.
Where is Tama kit, goddamnit ?
The only expansion for Superior Drummer 3 that has a Tama kit included is the "Metal Machinery SDX".
Great vid! But Joe Barressi records/mixes the best sample libraries ever- The Glamoflauge Kit in particular. HIs Glam pack blows away all other sample libraries admittedly tho due a lot to the fact that he mix processed them and everyone else doesnt but stll... We can only hope and pray that Barressi keeps recording and mix processing expansion packs for BFD and hopefully SD3 now!! ToonTrack Listen Up! Get Joe Baressi on board!!
Mark Juliano Yeah, that Evil Drums SDX is still awesome. Probably the most honest of all of them. Straight, solid drum sounds.
I agree more is better
60gb y no tiene china???? que desastre
Why didn’t they add paiste cymbals!! Bonhams favourites! Ugh and where’s zildjian cymbals?! Sabian
Cymbals SUCK TOONTRACK!! This would have been a killer pack you CHEESED out on cymbals Toontrack.
