  • Mark adds a Transmission Cooler to his V6 Next Gen Ranger and here's the results. In this video we show the difference on daily driving and towing the caravan. Towing is the primary reason Mark decided to add a transmission cooler onto his vehicle.
The cooler featured in Mark's Ranger is suitable for V6 Ranger, Everest and Amarok models.

I put one from Wholesale Automatics in my Next Gen V6 Everest Sport and am seeing pretty much exactly the same results as yours. Around Perth it will range from 85-90. Towing it generally slowly climbs to 88-90. I was towing down south WA in Feb in plus 40 deg and never went over 92, now I am up north and even in very strong headwinds it sits on 90. Like you, my coolant temp has gone up 1-2 degrees. Great investment.

Certainly not suggesting an upgraded cooler isn’t needed in some vehicles and in some applications. I’m also not suggesting lowering the temp slightly would be a bad thing …
But I think understanding the torque converter lock up logic is a huge help coz once you understand what’s going on whilst driving, you can actually train yourself to keep the vehicle in TC lockup most of the time which is a massively effective way to reduce temp

Yes for sure. All comes down to application.
Locking out the overdrive gears really helps. Usually I tow in gears 1-7 only and this helps to keep the trans in a better range. Cooler has however made a noticeable improvement with temps whilst towing

Hi Paul. Unit is $695 and we fitted ourselves. You can check out the install in one on my last vids. Suspect most people will get a mechanic to pop it in for them

I went in a different direction by installing the deep alloy trans pan, no cooler. I have to say I'm a bit shocked at how little the cooler cools compared to the deep alloy pan.
Trans temps take ages to warm up and it cools down pretty well when there's airflow over it. Can't say I feel the need to buy the cooler... yet. I'll see how things go for a year before I decide if I need anything further.
For comparison, I drive a gen 1 Raptor, same trans. I don't tow either. Normal city traffic, I rarely see temps over 89 and if it does, drops quickly once moving, down as low as 85 on the fwy.
I wonder how much better your cooling would be if you added the pan! btw, I had the pan fitted by Ford so they couldn't give me grief over warrantee! The service tech actually showed me a photo of a next gen ranger with the corner smashed out of the trans pan (very little protection under there), he was going to recommend the alloy pan to that owner!

Nice mate. Yeah I did talk about the alloy pan with Wholesale Automatic Transmissions so we might throw one on at some stage. I have bashplates under the trans so protection is ok but the allow pans certainly have greater cooling properties and allow you to run more oil which is good

Climbing engine temp would concern me…. You’d to remind yourselves to keep the fins clean

Only noticed 1 degree difference with the van on the back. Yes important to keep the fins clean - something like Simple Green air-con cleaner works well

how much damage or how does that 5-8' in higher temps really make with the gearbox? I would of thought that a trans cooler would lower the temps considerably more than a few degrees. does lowering the temps from a max of 100 to 93' really save the box from failure ? I have heard that they can and are expected to run at those temps?

Hi mate. Interesting I’ve found it’s been running a lot cooler over the past month or so - I guess to be expected with the weather starting to cool as we head into winter.
I think it comes down to vehicle use whether a cooler is right for someone. It’s the high heat under load for prolonged periods which is tough on the box. Coolers really show there value when towing.
I don’t think there’s any guarantee of saving a box from failure. I’ve just weighed up the pros and cons for our situation and determined a cooler was the way to go.

And Air cooled cooler is not an efficient way of cooling a fluid. At least not when compared to other types.
You need a much higher temp differential between the air and the fluid plus a massive amount (volume) of air to have any impact.
The amount of joules that Fluid can absorb make them the ultimate in all cooling - hence why engine coolant is used to cool various systems coz even warm / hot water can be more effective than air

Hum I want to know how you got your kids to disappear when new cooler test towing starts I think around 5 min mark then appear a few min later . I think some parents with kids on long trips might like to know as well😂

Can you add a fan to the cooler activated by a thermostat to assist in cooling? In addition, will it need a cooler bypass/diversion valve for the cooler months to ensure the fluid does get to temp?

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  5 месяцев назад

Hi Brett. I’m not aware of a additional fan or requirement for cooler bypass in cooler months. Wholesale automatic transmission are great with technical questions so I’d suggest reaching out to them if you’d like more info to determine suitability for your vehicle use.
I’m also keeping a note of common questions coming through and will pass onto the wholesale team.

Certainly don’t want to give you the wrong advice here, so I’d suggest chatting to your local dealership if this is a concern. They will be pretty familiar owners who tow adding this mod to prolong the life of their transmission. Interestingly, my previous tow vehicle (2018 Pajero Sport) came with a cooler from factory.
