I just purchased the M5 vs M6 based on your last video. With, an EF lens adapter. Canon should give you a kickback! Almost went Sony A6500. This M5 setup video is perfect timing for me! Thanks Fro yo! You Rock!

Don Edmunds 9/2019 Just purchased the Canon M5 camera with the 18mm to150mm lens also the EF lens adaptor to fit my other Canon Lens. Have followed the video tried different setting on the Camera and have learnt some interesting ways in taking my photos using various Camera settings.
Canon basically made the M5 for photographers and the M6 for videographers. The reason is that the M5 has a viewfinder and build in flash, also the screen flips down so you can raise the camera up to take photos. The M6 doesn't have a viewfinder and a much tinier flash and the screen flips up so that it's easier to VLOG and thus targeted to people that need that screen flip up and no viewfinder and a barely there flash which you don't need for video.
Great video can't wait to get my M5 and watch this video over to set it up.

Thought I would leave a comment as I don't think what you described "continuous AF" 16:40 is true. That function is just simply camera doing the servo mode without having the shutter halfway pressed. Useful for video or selfie shooters.

Thank you for your video. You did not explain the Panning Mode using the Creative mode. Does not work on the 22mm or 28mm lens. What lens is required and why?

18:50 But when I go HDR [contrary to AEB] the M5 merges the three pictures together and creates *one* image, whereas with AEB, I have three pictures on my SD-card, and that means I'm more flexible on image processing afterwards, say with darktable.

Can I connect to remote control?
I wish I could turn the "Star Button" into an LCD and EVD display on/off button..to conserve battery life. Let me know if someone knows how to do. Currently running in Eco mode. But, M5 is on a Black Rapid sling..and LCD comes on and off as it touches the side of my body. Maybe I should experiment with turning off auto display. I dunno. Still experimenting.

I bought the M5 then the next day you posted the real world review. I was happy with my purchase but the video really reinforced my feelings.
I read the manual and I think this video should come with the camera, it is so much easier to understand and tend to think there was more info into the video. I will have to have another look through the settings now though. I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have the custom dial functions tab in the menus. It certainly didn't mention it in the manual. It might be a feature that's not "unlocked" for the Australian market.
Jared, Thanks for this and your other videos. They are very beneficial in introducing a new camera to its user. I recently (March 2024) purchased an M5 to back up my M6 MII and M50 and I have an issue I cannot seem to solve. My C.Fn I is grayed out and not accessible. I have do a factory reset and C.Fn reset as a last resort and no change. Any ideas?

Hello Jared I’m getting 2-3 secs of lag when with mirrorless, shooting manual 1/350 shutter AP8 ISO 800.
Lens on auto.
No had to shoot manual lens to get it to fire almost on time.
could you make a video comparing the changes in each generation of Canon Rebel series, starting with the very common 3? I've been thinking about getting a new camera and because I already have Canon glass, and familiar with the interface I'm really swaying towards sticking with the brand.
Maybe the same could be done for the other major brands and their flagship models as they've changed each iteration. I've also been considering something in the Sony line because of the interview you did with Gary Fong.

Hi Fro!! I,m really interested in this tiny camara. Now I own a Nikon D7100, but I'm thinking to change to a mirrorless one. I have been researching (and watching your videos) and this M5 have some pretty good specs, but how it will compare with my D7100? will I lose image quality?? what about the noise from high ISO?
I'm just looking for a smaller camara, and this Canon looks grat for me. I do landscapes, portraits and some times street photography.

This vs a 80D for videos. I'm looking for something to shoot videos on location. Want to switch between tripod and handheld easily
80D is shooting higher quality video, at 24 fps 80D is shooting ALL-I 90Mbps MOV compared to M5's IPB 35 Mbps MP4
Plus 80D got better selection of lenses and much better battery life.
ObelixCMM does the 80D have built in image stabilisation? I'm seeing M5 with the lens adapter for cheaper than a 80D.
Neither one of them have image stabilization.
What Canon calls "in body image stabilization" on M5 is just digital stabilization for video only, and you can do that better in post processing.
And it should be cheaper as it is not as good as 80D

hi Jared. i was looking into buying an m5 and I was wondering...which are you going to recommend..the one with the 15-45mm lens or 18-150mm? i'm a beginner and I want to find my passion in photography?
get the 18-150 if its in between those two, you get much more reach and will have more fun getting the shots you want with more ease. search on 500px or Flickr the m5 and those lenses and you will see if either has better image quality, I think you'll be happy with how they both look but I would say if you want to just have fun and not worry too much, the 18-150 will cover a lot of range

OhhEhmGeeQUAKER I went with the M5 over the Sony for 3 reasons. (1) Sony screen does not flip down, for selfie mode. (2) canon EF adapter allows me to use OS and AF on all my previous Canon Lenses. (3) Price. Sony A6500 was $1,600. M5 was $850. Both with kit lenses.
Drive Hike Fair enough. I did not look at the a6300. But disagree with discounting the selfie mode. I believe it's critical for vblog. Quality of cell phone also nowhere near the quality of APS-C with good glass. 4K is currently not recommended for majority of users (see Jared's previous M5 videos).. But at the end of the day, it's a personal choice. One thing I am disappointed in Canon, is the lack of EF-M lens choices. Hence, the $40 EF lens adapter decision.
Drive Hike I can see 4K being a huge decider for many. I am also gambling on the 6D Mark II being a sub $2K winner. If it includes 4K, problem solved for me. M5 for daily driver, kids bday parties, etc. Special event 6D full frame for better battery life and images. All using the same lenses. It's my personal gamble. 😀
the Sony gets a better rep but the sensor is barely bigger and people say its better for that reason, its better in low light tho but image and noise is basically the same, even dxomark which specifically tests most cameras out says that. The saturation is much nicer on canon in my opinion, the Sony looks colder. The Sony has over priced lenses that are average, the canon m lenses get a bad rep cuz they are "slow" but really, there are verry sharp, go on Flickr or 500px and search the m5 with the lenses you might get, the zooms are actually really sharp, I overlooked all these lenses atfirst cuz online there are the spec warriors that bash the m line up but two reviewers said on amazon one of the m zooms ( I believe the 18-150) was comparable to one of their l series lenses( I forget which L series lenses, go on amazon and check out the reviews if youre curious), the images speak for themselves though, if video is important to you, in terms of being sharp get the Sony, although the transition of focus on the canon is smoother. Also the Sonys all overheat so if you want to spend thousands on something that will overheat then alright lol. if you want a nice camera that you can upgrade lenses on without breaking the bank get the canon, you can also use the adaptor without losing autofocus if you need it and use the really nice sigmas.
