    You're 100% accurate about the type R not being an all season vehicle.
    After two years and multiple hydroplaning in the type R, I was planing on buying a 2022 WRX STI but Subaru didn't make one.
    Then the GR Corolla was announced but took forever to hit the dealerships. Needless to say the 2022 WRX peaked my interest and now I have a 2023 WRX. This vehicle is an all season, daily driver, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.
    In a few years I will buy a VA WRX STI, to join the stable.
    Enjoy your STI and thanks for sharing!

      Ah man that’s great info, im always curious about owning a Type R cause I started off with Hondas, but I really do love the confidence these cars give me in almost any climate. And yes GRs are almost impossible to find. Congrats on your VB 💪🏼 still a car that’s fully capable in almost all conditions we drive in

    • @opmike343
      @opmike343 Месяц назад

      What does hydroplaning have to do with whether or not it's an all season vehicle? That's more a function of tire choice/width more than anything else. You don't need AWD to drive in the rain.

    • @naticedog
      @naticedog Месяц назад

      @@opmike343 buy an FK8, drive in the rain and good luck 🤞.
      Then switch to "all season" tires and drive in the rain again. Good luck 🤞
      If you have a type R and drive in the rain, would love to know what tires you ran/run in the rain? And you have a point about tires, size, and width. But I ran the stock wheel with stock tires, then switched to hankook, then switched to falken all season, and it was the same frightening experience.
      If I never had this experience, I would still have the type R, but I drive about 30K miles a year, and I needed a safe, all season, all weather, vehicle. Therefore AWD came to mind, and the WRX peaked my interest. Now I drive 75+ in all weather with no worries. So it's my daily.

    just bought a 2021 sti same colour, 6 weeks ago, 8 n half k on the clock and $40k later, wanted an sti since I was 20 in 2001. I'm doing reliability mods only. List; Mishi radiator, Grimmspeed Radiator Hoses, IAG AOS, Killer B thermo housing, Grimmspeed V2 BPV, IAG oil pan/baffle plate/pick up tube, and not for reliability but just because Grimmspeed pitch stop mount. I've married up a COBB Access port just for monitoring purposes only.

      this is the way, 100%. I WISH i did this to my 19 sti from the start along with a reliable dyno tune. screw the warranty. spend the 800 bucks on a good tune, dyno or e tune if not able to dyno. I made it to 86k before melting exhaust valves. I put every mile on it and took great care of it. never launched. never beat or babied. oil changed every 3k and topped off inbetween. subaru told me to kick rocks (warranty expired at 85k) but now I have a IAG 750 block with a rotated 6266 making 613whp on e85. which is amazing but also not worth it. if you ever want more power... 400-450whp with a smaller turbo is perfect.

    As someone who has owned a 2012 WRX since new, my advice has always been buy as cheap as possible. While the STIs are great cars, I struggle to view them as a value, as they simply have always had more competition in their price range. As time has progressed the performance hasnt kept up with the competition. The base WRX only competes with the GTI and that has been the case for nearly two decades. Lastly, owners of 2.5L EJ motors please check your oil levels monthly and change your oil every 5k miles not every 7.5k miles like the maintenance schedule use to recommend.

    Ive had my 2021 STI brand new since May of 2021. I have no regrets with the purchase of the car, its fun, practical, and looks great. So far ive pretty much done either aesthtic mods/suspension. As for mods under the hood, I've only done the reliability mods such as the CSF Radiator, iAG AOS, Cyl 4 Cooling mod, and an iAG Comp Series oil pan/pickup combo. The car has been pretty much stock in terms of power for the past almost 3 years, but I plan on changing that probably in a year!

    • @awsomejoe8580
      @awsomejoe8580 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@onsite_nate The factory oil pickup is known to fail after a while since the brazed/welded area cracks and when that happens, you drop oil pressure and will blow it up. AOS helps with the blow by from the factory pcv system. Then cyl 4 cooling mod helps with the overheating of cyl #4 which is most prone to it due to the unequal length headers that come with the vehicle. Lastly an upgraded radiator (recommend CSF or Koyorad) will help with better coolant temps, but also the oem one over time the plastic gets brittle and can crack.

I couldn’t daily the GSR because of the high rpms in fifth gear and the MR was an automatic and the transmission was expensive. Wanted a six speed car so got a STI in 2017. Never wanted a type r because of FWD. Still have it the STI. Has equal headers, 20g turbo, Recaro SR7 seats, Cusco bracing underneath, Fortune Auto coils with swift springs, Volk CE28SL and all the bushings/mounts for the steering/brakes/transmission and engine. I drive it 90% of the time in Sport Plus with a rear wheel bias and Track Mode on and Traction Control off. This car really shines when it’s pouring rain here in Houston. I would mess with rear wheel drive cars with much more HP when it’s raining and they realize really quick that they cannot mess with an STI when the weather is less than ideal.

    Owned a 2020 WRX STI for a bit and while I enjoyed my time with it, I ultimately ended up trading it for a 2019 Golf R. Some things I really loved about the STI were the way the AWD system feels, going to a haldex setup in the R really feels like a downgrade and the driving dynamics are nowhere near similar. The manual trans in the STI is also amazing feeling and I loved how mechanical it felt to operate, definite downgrade in the R too. The interior space feels a bit more special, although subjective, I appreciate both for different reasons, the R is much more subdued, where the STI has more engaging visuals.
    Where I think the R shines though is power delivery stock for stock, the R has modern turbo response and feels very linear, now that I have tuned it is significantly more fun to drive and has a more spirited personality; I was always a little disappointed by the stock tune on the STI and the turbo lag. Quality is another area that I believe the R wins as well, from the way the doors close to the road noise levels, to interior materials; the R is a significantly nicer driving experience in my opinion. Lastly, I appreciate the more subdued exterior styling of the R, in the STI even mini vans would be trying to mess with me on the freeway, and sadly if they had a modern V6, they could prob hang with that thing too haha, the R definitely flies under the radar and gets a lot less attention, which in my case I enjoy.
    In summary the STI to me is a nostalgic experience since it largely feels unchanged from the earlier iterations, where the R feels like a much more modern direct injection turbo experience that can be offered in other current platforms in varying degrees. If your primary use case is DD with some fun tuning options, the R is hard to beat, as with one tune you're pretty much at 340ish WHP but if you want the JDM turbo feeling of the 2000s with some modern tech touches, the STI will be the way to go. Either way there's some good options out there these days

      yeah man you totally get it. what you said sums up how I feel about this thing, definitely offers that old school nostalgic factor. looks can attract annoying peoples attention, and the speed can be underwhelming most times. I’ll definitely take a closer look into the Golf R, especially it having a DSG. Really does serve the daily driver purpose better than the STI now that I think of it. It’s just nice having the very last iteration of the STI with an ICE that keeps me glued to this thing. thank you for your insights!

      man I think you’d get a pretty good deal tbh, perfect car for those types of climates. Here in the US that’s roughly 2500mi, so I’m guessing 41-45k USD. Basically above MSRP

    Even if it's stock, don't redline it. These EJ257s can't take that abuse on a daily basis, especially since it's not a closed-deck block like a 4G63 for example.
    IATs are also a big factor and I doubt many STi owners even monitor this particular temp and just mindlessly get on boost

    • @onsite_nate
      @onsite_nate  8 месяцев назад +1

      great to know. and yes I recently heard about the IATs thanks to Smeedia, no more gunning it from stop and go traffic or hot temps in general. thanks man

    I’ll admit the speed and acceleration in this car is underwhelming. That being said, I think it’s a solid daily driver and that still feels special even 2 years later. It puts a smile on my face when I get back from a trip or something and jump in it. Amazing car that can be all seasons car as long as you throw winter tires on it. Honestly my only real complaint with this car is its low torque from a stop and how short the gearing is. Doing 3.5k RPMs on the highway in 6th gear going 78mph get’s pretty annoying. The fuel economy is also pretty horrible.

    • @onsite_nate
      @onsite_nate  8 месяцев назад

      i agree with all of this, straight line speed and light launches aren’t too exciting but overall as a car that functions as a normal sedan it’s amazing with how it handles and carry’s its power throughout turns/poor climate 👌🏼 thank you sir
