Good to see Scotty has become more relaxed in front of the camera over the years. Who would have thought back then just how far things would go and how much the MCM family would grow.
I'd say that if you don't have the parts, if you don't have a turbo-Yoda friend and if you don't have some connections, such a project would cost more than a car with turbo already in it, even if second-hand - let's face it.
It's still fairly cheap to turbo a car, especially this one. Mx-5's in my area go for about $2,000 to $5,000 depending on the condition. As for the turbo setup, they even said in the earlier episode of this that it would still be cheap even if you bought an eBay kit, without custom fabricating your own down pipe and intake manifold. I looked it up on eBay and its around $600 for the whole kit (T25 turbo included). I even did further extensive searches and found A LOT of TD04 turbos selling on Kijiji in my area for peanuts. If you can't find one on Kijiji check your local scrapyard. You are bound to find more than enough parts for your project. Point is, even if you don't have the connections use the resources you have. You'll always be bound to find cheap parts if you look hard enough. (This is also taking into consideration you're doing the labor yourself, because lets all agree here, that's the most fun part, haha)
Charly Ly I agree completely. On a side note I had never heard of Kijiji and I guess here in the states we use craigslist for that purpose. Interesting things I learn watching foreign channels.
As TurboYoda said you can probably do this with a 500$ ebay welder. The rest is just gathering parts actually. This manufold was made of tubes that you´ll find on a oil powered central heating unit in your house, go to a plumber and get this off his bin cut and weld in your garage. Dump pipe was like made of stainless steel tubing that´s anywhere where is metal (scrapyard) injectors from a to be wrecked RX7 and so on. You just gotta keep an eye out for them.
I disagree I'm currently putting a turbo on my car don't have turbo yoda just some knowledge I got working on cars and another friend good with cars with everything I need running 10 psi have only spent 1100 bucks on everything I need and don't give me crap about you bought ebay crap its a evo turbo hks bov aem for tuning intercooler wide band o2 sensor system wrx injectors
full synthetic 10-40, suits our climate, is relatively cheap. It doesn't have all the magic additives of some of the super expensive brands but i've run almost all my cars on that oil (mostly turbo 4s) and never had an oil related issue.
I "inherited" a 1994 Mazda Miata from my parents, I love that little car! It is a blast to drive, great mileage and handles so well. In addition to being my daily driver my wife and I drove it 2000 miles in a day and a half when we moved to Arizona. Other than a big stereo upgrade, it is stock. I have been thinking about putting a MAAAD turbo in it for a year or so, this video seals the deal! Keep the great videos coming, guys!
There should really be a mention of compression ratio, some cars might require double head gaskets or something to lower the compression ratio with forced induction.
+Krzysztof Gawryś I actually meant double thickness head gaskets but this only changes the compression ratio very slightly a compression plate will have a more dramatic effect. Never run two head gaskets.
jeremy davis Im totally down for a v8 swap in a miata if you can keep the weight down. The LS engines are small and pretty light so they don't disturb the handling as much as some think. The great thing about miatas is their handling so if you dont mess it up just for a horsepower and torque gain its all good. The smallblock ford is a little heavier than an Ls but not to bad.
he changed out the whole front clip for lighter parts because when he got it , the previous owner wrecked it. he also redid the supesion. he ended up not adding much weight.
Colton Ogden The 2jz is to heavy. Much heavier than a LS engine. And its been proven the LS engines can make the same reliable power as the Toyota straight six. Im a big fan of the 2jz engines but it would not be a good engine choice for this car. The LS v8 fits in these cars with very minor modifications to the chassis. A straight six would require rebuilding half of the car just to shoe-horn it in. To have just trashed the weight distribution of the car. Ruining the handling.
chefdan87 250hp is out from the engine I think. 200hp is to the wheels. Great power for a less than a ton vehicle. 4kp/PS is supercar territory out of a 1.6l engine.
I might as well buy a Miata and turbo it instead of turboing my car. Kits can cost over 10k and that doesn't include labor. In other words, that really sucks massive donkey balls. I'd rather spend about 3k to turbo a 2k mx5 and have fun with the choo choo.
OR, you could just buy a turbo car right off the lot, and upgrade the turbo, tune it, get about $1k in bolt ons, jack it up and do it all yourself, and save big bucks.
Yeah, you could just use an FMU but you can't really tune those and usually can't get about a few psi of boost. In a Miata though that's good for like 150hp so hella faster than stock
Well Yea They never said it was going to be free. Also you can get aftermarket ecus for around $250. In some cars you can just get the stock ecu unlocked and tune it.
You guys should make an episode where you tell us how much everything costed for the build. Especially for something like this. That would be interesting to see.
Well they get help from buddies, so at the most I'd assume they get discounted rates. Plus with all the custom stuff and filming taking extra time, the cost estimate most likely would not be that accurate. You'd be better off just googling an estimate for your specific car/project
There was company here in the US building Miatas with ford v-8s and they rebadged them as Monster Miata,. It was at least 10 years ago but they even had forced induction as per superchargers.
Guys , go google about kW to hp, 1kw = 1.3 hp so 149kw is almost 200 hp atw(at the wheel) and there is a power loss in manual about 18% there around 236hp at the engine, gen1 mx5 make 115hp, = double the factory power, gc8 wrx make about 236hp 1994 model, but 4wd system had more power loss. That why they said had greater power than a wrx. Sorry for bad English
@@FelixRisingOriginal Because the mx5 was tuned for max power, the Forester came out of the factory having to comply with emissions, reliability and fuel economy in mind.
Supercharging is ridiculously easy. Just drives off of the serpentine. No oil lines, or coolant lines need to be run, and no exhaust modifications... Just an ecu tune, and probably a bit of fabrication.
Real sad Turbo Yoda and Scott aren't living around my corner, because that treat is exactly what I have in mind for the exact same car of mine. I think I'll arrange a video conference kind of working session with those guys.
Wow great video series. You guys should do this to other cars! Really great to see some down and dirty DIY guys getting the job done with parts they had lying around
So what about forged internals... normally NA engines are not built with forged internals. There was nothing in these videos about needing to get those internals to handle the extra heat and pressure coming from a turbo system?
Joe Zavoli+ They used a car from the 90s that many people have turboed before them so there is plenty of trial and error work already been done. A quick google search will tell you how much boost is safe in most na cars.
Captaintoast12321 You would trust random google search to tell you what the safe boost levels are for a stock N/A motor... Not the smartest idea... and even still you need to take into account if this car is daily driven (like they said it would be) the constant strain on the motor from the turbo system WILL cause problems down the road.
Eric Capps is right. What I don't understand is how they are making some of their claims. "Double the power" they started with, "more power than a WRX." WRX comes stock with around 300 HP and an MX5 first gen with the 1.6L comes stock with about 115 HP

+kraenk12 As far as i know, it makes no difference. The nazi kidnapped the symbol, and used it in both orientations, as well as "standing flat" and "on edge". Still today its a "sacred" symbol in both Hinduism, & Buddhism. One Hinduism interpretation is "god" (or, more appropriate the Brahman) and it's used on pretty much every 3wheel vehicle as a symbol for luck. Buddhism regard it as a symbol of eternity. Hell, if thats not enough, its also a couple of letters in the Chinese alphabet, where it is also used facing both directions, meaning different things, although related. Bottom line. I think it's time people stop referring to a bit of cultural heritage as if it was something owned by the Nazi. It's a symbol of life and prosperity. Which definitely is all up Yoda's spiritualism. I would have loved to have a 350z when I was 16. Go for it if it's in your price range and you like it. The VQ is a great engine and the platform has pretty good aftermarket support.
My bike s1000rr produces 180 rwhp and I just purchased a k24 turbo for it, all I want is about 220 hp, but I never have played with turbos before so I am taking in all the info I can get. Thanks for the video, you should a small block Chevy in it. :-)
I have a 99 ford focus 2.0 and I'm getting 311 bhp to the wheels, the car is n/a It's had a full engine rebuild forged pistons the lot. I've even added a 2.0 cosworth YB head, it has full race exhaust, ceramic cat.
***** It can be rated at the crank, the flywheel, torque converter or the wheels, typically. Automatics are sometimes rated at the torque converter. Net power would be at the wheels. Rating power at the crank would be to further remove parasitic drag of the flywheel for higher numbers, but since you need a flywheel, it's basically lying. ;) Manufactures oftentimes remove power steering pumps and all sorts of things, which is why you should always look for SAE certified power ratings to be sure. SAE J1349 is the basic standard for real power ratings, which include power steering pumps and other things they would otherwise bypass/no use during testing to fool you into thinking how much power you will get. A lot of the time, the actual power the engine makes is nothing remotely close to what you get at the flywheel.
***** It's not impossible at all. Honda F20s were 250hp (JDM) which nothing extraordinary at the time, other than revving to 9,000rpm in a road car - but all the Honda Racing technology they used was preexisting for years and none of it terribly expensive. If you really wanted to make a 311whp Focus, it's only about 360bhp. That's relatively easy today if you put the tech and money into it.
***** Increasing air intake and exhaust and increasing amount of fuel burned with larger intake and exhaust values and larger diameter injectors, decreasing weight (parasitic drag), decreasing friction (parasitic drag), increasing air flow/decreasing unwanted air/fuel turbulence, refining the air/fuel ratio, increasing engine compression, increasing fuel quality, changing the valve timing, lift and duration.. There are many, many things you can improve upon that the factory engine won't have. The manufacture has costs, emissions and reliability to take into account so nothing they develop will make the most power it can make.
I really wanted an MX-5 when I was looking for my first rwd manual car in April. I was gutted when I missed out on one that was British racing green with tan and wooden interior with Nardi steering wheel. So I got an SW20 mr2. I still want to test out an mx-5 though!! And turbocharging this engine or swapping with a rotary is the only way I'd go, but then again I think Mazda designed this to be a British sports car replica. With a rotary itd deviate a bit from that. A torquey v8 wouldn't be a good idea either.
I still love going back and watching this again! I would love to drop a turbo into my 09 MX5 VADRR1, wouldn't it be easier if you salvaged an entire turbo unit and ECU from a RX?

You should meet up with Car Throttle and put Phil (Their Turbo and modified Mazda Miata /MX-5) vs. your Turbo Mazda Miata /MX-5 , would love to see the outcome at a drag strip or a race track , or even a drift battle !
Nice project! what's the total cost of this project? parts, labors, tuning, and etc...
Love the 240 Turbo in the background!!
The snail moves at a top speed of 1.3 centimetres per second (47 meters per hour or ~50 yards per hour), and has a strong homing instinct, readily returning to a regular hibernation site.
Sucks that you guys had issues with the MegaSquirt; I loved it on my 99 Miata. Glad you got the Haltech working and enjoying the car. Cheers mates!
This show should be on TV
love the sound of the turbo spooling up when he changes gear!!
Awesome, thanks dude. I'll give it a try.
Can't quite believe you replied, I'm honoured!
It's about time you guys did something with a rotary
Not bad for thrown together parts. Sounds like a fun balanced drive
I really, really love this show! Keeps teaching and helping me all the time. Big thanx
I love MCM when they are serious, theyre funny and all, but the serious quotes and info is just moving... no pun intended
Rewatching this in 2024. Still awesome!!!
I have a question about this video...what priority valve was used for make this sound? This sound is fantastic!!! I'm from Brazil and here not exist a priority valve with this sound.
I would have loved to have a 350z when I was 16. Go for it if it's in your price range and you like it. The VQ is a great engine and the platform has pretty good aftermarket support.
you had me at "kangaroos have 3 vaginas". I'm in love with this channel from now on.
man I want to boost my 2.4 09 solstice but this video showed me its a lot more work than i thought.
Head on over to the US! That would be awesome!
My bike s1000rr produces 180 rwhp and I just purchased a k24 turbo for it, all I want is about 220 hp, but I never have played with turbos before so I am taking in all the info I can get. Thanks for the video, you should a small block Chevy in it. :-)
That was probably one of the better semi-car related monologues I've heard in a long time hahaha.
Great Build you guys, I hope it is as cheap here in the U.S.
biggest fan from Kuwait keep up the good work
marty the v8 mx5 are popular in the us you should consider doing a video on swapping a v8
that's a beauty of dyno chart.... almost a diagonal nice one mates.
cheers,
I have a 99 ford focus 2.0 and I'm getting 311 bhp to the wheels, the car is n/a It's had a full engine rebuild forged pistons the lot. I've even added a 2.0 cosworth YB head, it has full race exhaust, ceramic cat.
Technically it's 311 whp, bhp is at the flywheel. =)
Shock Diamond How much horsepower at the engine?
***** It can be rated at the crank, the flywheel, torque converter or the wheels, typically. Automatics are sometimes rated at the torque converter. Net power would be at the wheels.
Rating power at the crank would be to further remove parasitic drag of the flywheel for higher numbers, but since you need a flywheel, it's basically lying. ;)
Manufactures oftentimes remove power steering pumps and all sorts of things, which is why you should always look for SAE certified power ratings to be sure.
Awesome episodes guys, can't wait for the next one
Nice mods ,im thinkin of puttin a turbo in my rwd mazda 626 with a sr20 vct.
I still love going back and watching this again! I would love to drop a turbo into my 09 MX5 VADRR1, wouldn't it be easier if you salvaged an entire turbo unit and ECU from a RX?
These guys are hilarious. I'd love to have a few beers with them.
We need more driving/drifting/racing-footage damnit!
Moog and Marty made me like MX5's soo much i bought one :D
thank you guys!
Watching their videos makes me want to do many things to my 1990 Nissan 240SX, but i don;have the space, tools, nor the money lol.
Marty, what oil weight do you run in your MX5? I recently bought a '93 1.6 Jap import and it doesn't seem to like the 5w30 I put in it.
MAD car by the way, I was so stoked to see you guys got one of these on the show.
similar thing happened to me. click mcm in your subscriber side bar and see if all the vids show up, worked for me.
It is only called the MX-5 Miata in North America. The Miata part is dropped in the rest of the world.
If you do let me and my mates at CU sport car club know, we got everything from crazy tuned GTRs to old school mustangs and challengers, and the ultimate driving machines BMW ///M
cheers from Colorado!
Hey Guys a mod you might want to look at for your MX5 is the coolant flow mod form the back of the head noe that it is turboed. Something to do with coolant flowing back there very well. I had a MX5 that had a warped head because of it.
excellent built guys, clean and neat! Thank You!
Are you guys planing on doing a supercharger built?
im rebuilding a audi B4 quattro with a 2.8l v6 12 valve engine that I'm eventu plening on supercharging, Would love to see you guys do something simular :)
SFI....I was wondering if the guys at Haltech ever used it. This is the type of fuel injection that the Buick GN's use. Way to go dudes!
i miss MCM videos like this
love your videos guys. informative and hilarious. thanks for sharing.
Rest in peace man, you shall be never forgotten!
Ok.... I took the time and did it myself. I'm a smart American... It's about 199 HP. very nice fellahs!
I would like to know just how many cars are in this little MX-5 part wise. It kinda reminds me of my old Dakota, which ended up being an 87-98 (save a few years) while the original chassis was a 96
we got drift king Nano here, you entering ADGP this year? I'll see you at the Mallala round if you are.
"Even though he's wearing a holden shirt Michael knows his stuff when it comes to tuning" am I the only one who laughed at this?
"By Balls I Mean it's hermapohditic snail" hahaha love the videos guys keep them and the MAD SKIDS coming
Moog just posted on FB and is alive and well
Every time I see two guys riding in a MX5, I think to myself, "its nice to see they are open about their relationship!"
