This was honestly one of the best FM vides I've seen in ages. Really well produced, edited and FM Lama did a great job talking through everything. Awesome stuff everyone
Thanks for such a heartwarming comment - glad you liked the video
Let us know what Opposition Instructions you've had the most success with in the comments below
Always press active on opposition GK, Backline, Midfielders!
Thanks for actually showing the results through the match engine, it makes it so much clearer!
Certainly gonna try this on my journeyman save. Started unemployed got a job at Concord Rangers in the Van South division. My attacking line is great my midfield is decent but my defensive line worries me and even scares me since we already conceded 50 goals in 35 games. Luckily we score easy. One off the best tactical videos so far.
Great work Llama, very comprehensive but easily explained
Really good video but can't help thinking the music should be faded out. Distractingly loud unfortunately.
Great Video and a good way to apply pressing for sure, but I think you can get a better result with the basic instruction if you move the line of engagement further to the front. In FM the graphic doesn't align with the instructions, what you use in the video is pretty much the default and tells the players they should start applying pressure pretty much at the middle of the pitch is it says "mid block". So if your opponent plays with deeplying playmakers like in the examples, they are open to make long passes from their half to the wings and abuse the lack of pressure in their half. What you did was also very interesting, because its a way more detailed way of instructing team press, I very like that. But I don't see a general problem to also use the team tactics, because when you move the engagment higher, you have a semilar effect, just not as focused. So I would say generally move your line of engagement for deeper pressing, but if as you explained in the video, want to bring the opponent to move the possession to specific areas of the field, like the fullbacks, this video makes a great example how to do this, without overloading the tactical instructions.
Thumbs up for the great video in explaining the game in pressing! Maybe wts needs your advice
Great vid. Thanks. Subscribed
Great video, love the combination of tactical nous and replay footage examples to back them up.
Thanks.I've not made many of this style of video before, so I'm pleased you found it useful
I found this last night (and your channel) and it's opened my eyes a little. I have a Beta save that I'm no longer playing but I'm going to use that save to test a few things out. A great video.
I've subbed your RUclips channel. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks for those kind words. Good luck getting your pressing game working just how you want it! And thanks for the sub, we appreciate the support
Just gotten into FM23 first one since CM01/02, and I've got too say this video is excellently made.
Thank you for the kind feedback and good luck with FM23 - here's hoping you find a great save
extremely clear with great examples in game of why this is important! thanks Llama and the editor, I will definitely use this in my strategies from now on
We hope it works for you!
Yeah in FM22 and now in 23 I've avoided using team instructions for stuff like marking, pressing, and tackling. Instead I started using individual player instructions combined with opposition instructions. Like you, I didn't want some of my players going in hard, and I didn't want certain opposition players pursued in that manner. Use PIs and OIs instead of team instructions. The downside is you have to tailor each game to your opposition for that next game, but I think that actually makes you pay closer attention to who you're playing. I don't think you can just plug in one tactic and nevr make any adjustments anymore. You have to scout and adjust to your opposition much more than in older versions of FM.
I definitely seems to give the team more shape and structure doing it this way. Will plug and play tactics be a thing of the past now?
Paul, how do you do that in FM22? Is it similar to methods in TMS' video?
@@slovinho Yes, pretty much. My biggest focus going into any match is to try to determine what their best passing combinations are and using trigger press OIs to try to break up those passing lanes. I figure if the opposition is having trouble completing passes they'll have trouble scoring.
The catch, especially with OIs, is that they can pull your players out of position. For instance if you tell your RB to trigger press or mark tightly their LW, and the LW is playing inverted or inside forward, or even has the instruction to cut inside with the ball, and your RB follows him, now the RB is potentially out of position.
The same goes for using PIs to tell a player to specifically mark an opposition player or position. They just did a video on that as well. To me that's an even bigger problem with your players getting out of position and so therefore i rarely use those instructions.
@@paulb4604 So you are mainly using pressing and agressive/passive attack on the player in OIs, right? You're leaving tight marking alone?
@@slovinho Yes that's mostly correct. The problem for the way my teams are built is that I tend to go after big strong players who may not be all that fast, which could create an issue if I ask them to mark tightly. If my guy has ACC 12 and SPD 12 and I ask him to tightly mark an 18/17 player, that's not going to work very well.
Just found this channel. Love the content. Really well put together. Thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
Really helped make sense of how to make the mid press work. Great video, thank you!
Thanks for the feedback. Let's hope a mid press is more productive in this latest version of FM!
Love it!
This way you can actually tell your team how, where and who to actually defend!
Another brilliant video!
Llama must have had a good teacher 😉
@@TheManagersSeat ahah 😂
From my experience, the more I ask a player to do something, the less likely they are to do it :) Great video, I have been having some issues with the pressing, which has lead to my defenders chasing forwards all over the place, Thank you, your video really helped.
this video is game changer. TY!
Really interesting, cheers for that, will give it a go. It’s a smarter way to do it also when you think that your forwards often aren’t skilled to press anyway and tend to run around like headless chooks.
Hope it gets you the result you're looking for
Oh wow… I never dived so deep into the OI‘s and how to set them up properly. I Thank you very much for this awesome help 👍🏻🤩 And I really like that you have shown, how the changes work in the ingame match 😃 Very good video, thank you very much 😊 You have got a new subscriber 😉
Thanks for subscribing and for leaving such a positive comment. So glad the video was helpful

Feel bad/guilty... Clicked the video thinking you had Jack (Work the Space) as a guest in the thumbnail, maybe with a bald cap mind!. Stayed for the content though, real informative video 👍
It's one of the best explanations about pressing I've seen until now.
Glad you liked the video - and thanks for leaving such a positive comment
You have just earned a sub my friend, plus a thumbs up. Great video!!
Thanks and welcome
This is great, one of the best FM23 videos I’ve seen!
I noticed you didn’t click on counter press, why is that?
Fantastic info, much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
On one hand I really appreciate that Pressing is not OP anymore
on the other hand it's sad because I want to see high pressing, attack minded football. Both irl and in game.
But I have decent results with less pressing. It's not like my home town team has players able to upkeep that anyway.
Thanks a lot
always pressed the FBs or WB...and also 2 CMs....with the FBs or WBs I use show onto their weaker foot...theory being they are nore likely to make an error on the weaker foot...but I guess depends if you are trying to funnel the opposition...always believed that slightly higher or below trigger press team instruction is enough to allow players to make decisions as to when to press. Decision attribute has become very important to me this year!....good video and good demonstration
Thanks Phil! Glad you liked the video and good luck with the excellent work on your own channel and with the live streaming too
@@TheManagersSeat Thank you so much...fingers crossed
Wow. Very informative video. Thanks 😍
Glad it was helpful!
Great video I am looking forward to trying this out on my save
Hope you enjoy it!
Excellent video. More of these please.
Thanks - hope it helped
So i actually tried this and well i watched the entire match and there is definitely a huge difference. I notice my team shape is better, my players seem actively playing instead of passively playing. I won the game 7-0. Scored 6 goals in the first 25 minutes haha. Will definitely be fine tuning this from now on.
Excellent video thank you!
Lovely to hear. What pressing level did you go for
@@TheManagersSeat just standard, nothing special. Playing a 4-2-4 wide formation. Shorter passing, balanced, standard tempo.
It’s a tactic i’ve been developing with Penybont in the Welsh Premier League. 8 seasons in and i have been trying to find a pressing system that works in the champions league and most games.
Next game is away to Bayern lol so this will be interesting.
Your video on training youth is amazing too. Thank you for the time and effort :)
Thank god I’ve seen this video it’s been driving me mad how little players where pressing as a unit.
I’ve been playing 3 at the back so should be outnumbering attackers and the game just doesn’t seem to be able to understand how flexible they should be as they never cover each other or will all run for the same ball or player leaving huge gaps.
Hopefully, some opposition instructions might help. It should help you shut down the opposition in midfield more and you could always experiment with assigning one of your back 3 as a man-marker if the opposition have one man up front
@@TheManagersSeat training has helped me a ton this edition, much more than last year. ive been spamming endurance, transition-press, and defending engaged training units and my team presses like mad men
I learnt from this video
We probably need a video about a high press soon?
Hi nice vid, but the height dosent matter at all, its just about the attribute "jumping reach".
Great Video!
Don't tell Llama that - he'll want to do more
Really interesting video, going to try it out in my Estonian save - pesky Flora boys running too wild for my liking
Good luck!
I have found FM like counter attack. Especially when you are the weaker team. Get stuck in is always off.
Great video well explained 👌
Thanks for the feedback. Hope the video helps
But, if you play with a high block, shall you set a urgent press or a standard one?
I always get told that gagenpress in English non league is daft as players can’t do it for a whole game or in some cases just aren’t good enough but in my fc Halifax town save its worked wonders, I got them from 14th in Jan to 2nd, had a mega win streak and went up through the playoffs
Well done on that performance! 14th to 2nd is huge
When you realise your nights spent agonising over your teams pressing could have been fixed by watching this
This is the best fm ever. Small detail is important
100%. There's no hiding place in FM23 if your tactics aren't right
Taking the biz 🐐
Can I ask why you don't tight mark the wingbacks?
Nice video! I’m new to FM so I have some rookie questions. Is it always necessary to select tactics. For example work into the box or shoot on sight? Or is it ok to leave unselected? What are the lines connecting some players in the tactics screen? Are star ratings that important? Thanks!
Those are all good questions.
Firdtly, it's absolutely fine not to tick every box (in fact, you probably shouldn't, especially if you're working with players from lower league clubs). Only tick the boxes you think are essential to your tactic. I normally only tick one or two boxes.
The lines indicate how well those players have played when in the same starting line up. A dotted line between players means they have played badly together and don't have a good rapport. A solid line means they've played well together and have a good understanding
And finally, are star ratings important? Depends who you ask! I've seen videos where people have said they are useless, whilst other people think they are valuable. The thing to remember about star ratings is that they are your Assistant Manager's opinion of how good a player is in comparison to the rest of your squad/other players in the division. A player can be rated 5 star, but if you move up a position he might only be rated as 3 star. It doesn't mean he's got worse, just that he's now up against tougher opposition.
@@TheManagersSeat thanks! I almost got promoted my first season with Venezia lost the playoff to Palermo. But I just got fired last night in November in my second season. Now I’m looking for. another club. This game is so addicting
I'm hoping this will cause my tiki taka tactic to stop leaking goals.
Carlos tevez likes this video.
You save my life in fm
Hope it helps!
Great insights, but I missed a bit of the instructions: you showed Opposition, but do I have to do this for every match. What if I had delegated Opposition instructions to my staff, will they override my Opposition Instructions / Positions?
You can do it for each individual match or you can set it for the whole season. I tend to set it for the season, but others like to micro manage each game
If you delegate it, |I think it will overwrite any instructions you've set
Does anyone know if you can set these for a tactic so that the same OI’s are present every time or if you have to do them for each game?
yes set them up under 'positions' then just click the icon under opp instructions at each match
"When regulating pressing based on opponent instructions, in my experience, the number of fouls increases, and ball possession decreases. This approach is not the right choice for teams that prefer possession-based football. I prefer countering with player instructions - a combination of team instructions and individual player instructions."
what would you do with the central midfield players? thanks
The opposition's CM's? Use Opposition Instructions to mark them tight, tackle them hard and trigger the press on them. I explain in a bit more detail in the 'Is Pressing Dead' video
Can I ask what you do the the wingers?
Im finding the same problem. PRESSING doesnt seem to work anymore.
I think it works a little differently to provisous versions of the game. A high gegenpress is not as overpowered as it used to be. Mid and low blocks are more effective this year
What would be the OI setup against a 433?
Against a wide 4-3-3?
Tight mark, trigger press and tackle hard the central midfield 3
Opinions on what do do with the wide players is a bit more divided. I'd prefer to trigger the press on them, tackle them hard and show them on to the foot of the wing they are playing on. Others might prefer to tight mark them too, but at the moment I'm not.
@@TheManagersSeat leave the fb alone? Usually like when I face bayern Kimmich and Davies overlap the wingers and are the most creative.
Perhaps it would benefit others if we have a discussion on discord channel? Would like to understand from you and others the principles behind why you put OI on some and not others based on different formations faced. Would be great learning i think
@@EDTeo The decision on whether to press the full backs depends on a couple of factors. If you're playing a high press, you'll probably want players going and engaging the opposition full backs so that you can win the ball higher up the pitch. However, if you are trying to play a lower block, you might not want to stretch your team out and disrupt your defensive shape by chasing after full backs when they are on the ball in their own half.
However, in the example of Bayern's full backs, you play much higher up the pitch, almost like wingers, you may decide that you're prepared to sacrifice shape in order to shut down their danger men. It's pretty nuanced this year.
Feel free to '@' people in the tactics section of the discord and we can get some screen shots going of the different instructions people use
Wait a minute… A Level Business iykyk
yk
I assume this is something that has to be tinkered with before every game?
You can set it before each game if you wish, or you can do it at the start of the season and it'll be used as a template for all fixtures.
On your first day in the job, go to your tactics page and click on the 'opposition instructions' tab. You'll see that it has every possible playing position that you might come up against during the season. If you set the pressing, tackling and marking instructions for each position, the game will automatically apply them each time the opposition uses that position.
If I didn't explain that very well, jump in The Managers Seat discord and just '@fmllama' in a message and he'll show you some screenshots to explain
@@TheManagersSeat Legend, thank you
Just one point. Height doesn’t matter at all. It’s jumping reach that decides how high the player can jump. Height matters not. Otherwise a nice video.
There is a ingame tip telling you that height matters ...
Nevertheless it does not matter one bit. All that matters is jumping reach @@toniilievski3934
Also I've been working with data research for the Football Manager series for a little over 10 years if you feel that bit of information is relevant @@toniilievski3934
No. Quite contrary, pressing really works this time.
Bosh
didn't work, the pressing got worse
Marking requires your players to be out of position to follow a man, it's extremely unhealthy to have that many marks., look at your teams attributes do anyone even have green marking on most of the players that is *near* the people you want to mark?
Marking strikers is usually done by a defender that can have good marking and other attributes, but you seem to EXPECT your striker to be a world class marker, not only is he a horrible marker he also has a horrible position sense, so all you do is making a version of the headless chicken dance.
In the video, the 3 central defenders of the opposition are left with no opposition instructions on them, so the striker isn't EXPECTED to mark anybody at all. Even if he were, the striker is Tammy Abraham, who has aggression of 14, bravery 15 and teamwork of 16 so should be a suitable candidate to close down defenders. In addition, his poor marking will be negated to an extent by the opposition defenders poor off the ball movement. The striker does not need to be a 'world class marker' when the defenders he is near have similarly poor off the ball movement. Koffi Djidi, one of the Torino defenders in this video, has off the ball movement of 6, for example. This is equal to Tammy Abraham's marking.
In total, only FOUR players were tightly marked in this video. 2DM's and 2AM's. Included in the Roma midfield are Cristante (marking 12, positioning 13) and Pellegrini (marking 11, positioning 11), Karsdorp (11, 11) and Zalewski (10, 10) with Matic coming on as a sub (marking 13, positioning 16). For context, in the Torino midfield were Ricci (off the ball movement of 12) and Linetty (off the ball movement of 13). You may notice how the marking and positioning of the Roma midfield is broadly similar to the off the ball movement of the opponents they are up against and, in the case of Matic when he came on, superior.
Fm23 is dead its so bugged
