"IF": Have You Done Enough to Receive Salvation? || Spoken Word

- We all ask the question, "Have I done enough to receive salvation?" Even if we aren't thinking about it from a heaven/hell point of view, we all want to be saved from something: boredom, purposelessness, fear, shame, persecution.
But if there is a perfect God who is a perfect judge, how do we know if we have done enough to be in his good graces?
As you will see in this video, there is nothing you can do to receive salvation. Asking "if I" will only lead to feelings of condemnation. Asking "if Christ" however, will lead to you being convinced that God has done everything for you to save you. All you have to do is believe that Jesus is God, that he died for your sins, and that he rose again to make all things new: including you.

The problem with these questioning lines
Is not actually that you’re asking “if”
But that your “if” is dependent upon your “I”
Because if you are trying to provide
Yourself with an equation
That assures you of your salvation
And you’re using yourself

The standard
The cause
The determinant
The foundation
Then
The only answer you will ever get out of your internal interrogation
To the question, “Have I finally done enough to receive salvation?”
Will be a resounding negative declaration:
NO!
No, you aren’t good enough
No, you messed up too much
No, you did not do enough good works
No, you did not prove to God your worth
No, you didn’t give it your best try
No, you didn’t do enough before you died
If your “if” is based on your “I”
Your assurance of salvation will always be denied
And yet, for every single one of us
This is what we have tried
To base our salvation
On self-evaluation
Yet, all we will ever get out of this arrangement
Is condemnation
That is why you feel lacking no matter how hard you try
Because your “if” is based on your “I”
That is why you feel disobedient no matter how often you comply
Because your “if” is based on your “I”
It’s why you feel
Distant
Like a misfit
A second-class citizen
It’s why you feel empty no matter how much you supply
Because your “if” is based on your “I”
And your “I” can never measure up
To the standard of God on high
Not because his standards are awry
But because he is perfect and we always fall short of that prize
So, there is always condemnation for those who are in “I”
But there is good news
There is Gospel
Free to all without a price
For there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
So let’s make a new condition
Let’s ask a different why
With the old one gone
Let’s fly a freshly drawn question mark over each of our lives
Let’s ask a new “if” to replace our “if I”

If Christ
If Christ was good enough
If Christ loved so much
If Christ died to save his church
If Christ rose to give us his worth
If Christ provided bread of life to eat
If Christ fulfilled the scriptures by crushing death beneath his feet
If Christ
Performed every good work
Sought out those who never searched
Died the death we should have died
Beat the grave to raise us to life

The joy within these questioning lines
Is that the “if’ of our salvation is no longer dependent
On something that we supplied
Instead, the if of our salvation is dependent
On the one who loved us so much that he was crucified
So let’s abandon our “If I’s” and run toward “If Christ”
Let’s move from feeling like “I’m condemned” to say, “I’m convinced”
That neither life nor death
Neither heights nor depths
Not my own faults or mess-ups
Not my guilt or distrust
Nothing can separate me from the love of God
Because all my “if’s” Christ answered on the cross
So we ask this final if, and with it all condemnation is crushed
If God is for us who can be against us?

Am so in tears right now, because I have been living a life of 'if I' condemning myself at every point and yes the answers I have always gotten is that I am not going to heaven or I am not in right standing with God, or I am not flourishing. If you have put your faith in Jesus, confessed your sins and inadequacies to him, and believe that God raised him from the dead you do not need to feel condemned. You can be convinced that nothing can separate you from God because Jesus has done everything for you.
Rest in that truth. And when you do, you will find your heart coming alive. You will find yourself wanting to kill sin and be holy. Why? Because you have found a greater affection through the Gospel!

And there is people that say you can lose your salvation, how can you lose an ethernal salvation? How can you have ethernal life if it is temporary? Jesus PROMISES us salvation.
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall NEVER perish, neither shall ANY man PLUCK them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and NO MAN is able to PLUCK them out of my FATHER's hand. (John 10:28-29)

I’ve rewatched this so many times! I first saw it at Challenge Conference 2018 and it fit exactly how I’d been feeling (lacking no matter how much you supply, disobedient no matter how many times you comply)!!
Now I come back at it often when I need to hear that I can’t prove to God my worth through actions. Only Jesus can do that.
I think I found this at just the right time, even though it’s been four years since this was uploaded. I’ve been watching this on repeat for the past week. I needed to hear it so badly.
Right after I was saved last year I was pulled into a legalistic, “Torah observant” faith. The group I was in told me that keeping the law was how I kept my salvation and showed my love for God. It was all so wrong and it broke me.
Like this poem said, I always felt disobedient even when complying with the law. I never felt like enough. I felt like a failure. I felt like every breath I took was steeped in sin and there was no line that could cleanse me.
Thankfully, and by His mercy, God brought me out of that but I’m still healing. I wasn’t even in it for a year but it destroyed and broke me. It’s still not easy but I know His grace will pull me through, and playing this video on repeat is helping my spirit become free once more.

Wow this is for me right now! Ive had doubts of salvation nearly all my Christian life because I had people telling me what you just said I need to do this I need to do that but Jesus paid the price for me! When I accepted Him and asked forgiveness 2 years ago I was rested and at peace Ive even go to a place where Im like did I really put my faith in Him and really repent etc because of sin in my life im a real mess but I thank you for this video in help to get me back where I need to be focused on Christ and not self restore to me the joy of my salvation oh Lord

Hey David, I have just watched you speak. Today is 1/15/23. I really wish that I could be as joyful as the other listeners, but there is another part to all this and I must say it haunts me. I Turned my life over to Christ in 1980 and have struggled with this the entire time since. Even though I believe every word that you said I still struggle with my responsibilities as a Christian. My problem is not what Jesus did on our behalf, but on my responsibilities in maintaining my salvation. Paul seems to talk out of both corners of his mouth, and he is not alone . One side says Christ alone while the other says IF WE... It certainly comes across to me that I have a big duty to live my life a certain way if I plan on making it to heaven. So I guess my struggle is where is the line between trusting Jesus and doing my part without becoming legalistic. I am now 67 yrs. of age. If I have to, I will take this haunting to my grave, but I pray that I won't somehow have to. It may be that you may not know what to say to me on this but if not, then please pray that someone will. Thanks for whatever.
Motivation? Who authored your salvation? We obey out of love and gratitude, not out of responsibility.
Remember if you truly believe with your heart, and know without doubt that Jesus died for you. And you have detested who you are without Him, and love that Christ paid your penalty already, and Christ is in you, then you are free. You are free from the condemnation of Hell, not because of anything you did or can do, but because of what our Master who loves us beyond words, already paid the penalty. The judge bore the judgement.
Hey Dave! I struggle with this at times as well. Recently the Lord brought me to Romans 6:23, “ For the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (NIV, I added the word gift in caps for emphasis). This verse helped me realize that eternal life is a free gift that I received the minute I accepted Jesus as my savior. Jesus took your wage for sin when He died on the cross. You can’t do anything to “earn” your way into heaven. Nothing you do on the earth is going to change or take away that gift God has given you, which is eternal life. Rather it is a free gift and promise that you receive the minute you accept Jesus! That’s the good news! Now, because that is our new truth we live our lives like Jesus to the best of our ability, out of gratitude for what He did for us. But He knows on this earth you will never be perfect, that’s why you lean and trust in Him :) That condemnation you feel is not from God (Romans 8:1; Romans 8:31-39)!! I hope this helped a little :)

Its really about how much we have allowed him to do the work HE wants to do in our lives. The work of the Holy Spirit as we work synergistically with him to make us conformed to the image of Christ.

By grace through faith we are saved by Jesus.
I still have trouble with fully trouble with trusting my everything into God and uses my own works to trust. Which is wrong. It’s not of our works that get us saved. Believe with all our heart that Jesus is Lord, he died on the cross for our sins that we may have the chance to spend eternity with him in heaven and rose again on the third day and defeated sin and death. That we are sinners. That I am a sinner who needs a saviour and Jesus is the only way to be saved and repent of our sins then we are saved by gods grace through our faith

And there is people that say you can lose your salvation, how can you lose an ethernal salvation? How can you have ethernal life if it is temporary? Jesus PROMISES us salvation.
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall NEVER perish, neither shall ANY man PLUCK them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and NO MAN is able to PLUCK them out of my FATHER's hand. (John 10:28-29)
So, if you want to be saved, repent from your false god, which is your works, which is yourself, and believe in Jesus Christ. Many believe in him, but some trust in him. Trust in him for your salvation. Do the will of the father.
For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

If you have repented from your false god (which is, all gods other than Jesus) and trusted in him alone for your salvation, then you will go to heaven. Dear, if you doubt your salvation, then you are not saved, because you didnt understand what salvation is.
For salvation, there is a big deception about repentance. Repentance for salvation is not from sins, it is from idols, it is from unbelief. Please think, who can have the power to repent from all sin before having the Holy Spirit? Who? You see, it needs effort. This is a works salvation. You must effort to be saved if you do repented from your sins for salvation. That is so worldy. This kind of false repentance have deceived many, and have turned Jesus's salvation like other false salvations, needing effort. For, repentance from sins is a work.
“And God saw their WORKS, that they TURNED FROM THEIR EVIL WAY;... (Jonah 3:10)”

Great question. And Dave is right. If you put your faith in Christ then you are free. If you believe that Jesus has done everything necessary to earn your salvation and free you from sin and death then you are free indeed!
There is also another "then." Can a heart made free by Christ "then" do nothing? Can it remain unmoved or unchanged? No!
Once you experience the liberating truth of the Gospel your heart will run after God. You will long to obey his commands. You will joyful follow his decrees. You will chase him down until all you have is his.
Those who experience the free grace of Jesus are changed forever. That is the "then" to the "if."
