Great review as always . Nikon advertise that it has some kind of weather sealing . I bought this lens and i think it's a gem , better than my Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 ( Nikon is sharper ) , Fuji XF 23mm F2 ( Nikon close up quality destroys it ) , and as good as my Canon 22mm F2 or Olympus 17mm F1.2 . My copy is razor sharp in 3/4 of the frame straight from f1.7 and the extreme corners never keep up but it still better than the Zeiss and the Fuji . Also F1.7 is exactly half a stop between F1.4 and F2 and versus the F2 of the Canon and Fuji's it's a nice little bonus to have on APS-C . For the 190€ i paid for it it's a bargain of a lens and because it's so light and compact at 130g , it is now my favorite 35mm equivalent on APS-C format .
Mr. Frost, as relatively new photography hobbyist (for 3 years now), I'm a fan of your content. Seeing a minidisc player included in this video has somehow endeared you to me even further. Keep on keeping on! And thanks for the great content.
Honestly your reviews are the best out there. I've been following you since the beginning of my photography journey a few years back and I'm always happy when I see you reviewed something I'm thinking of getting. So, thanks a lot for all those videos!
Chris, Thanks for getting to this lens. I’ve switched whole hog into Nikon Z and use a Z50 for travel and every day carry. When Nikon gives us a Z50ii with IBIS i’ll no doubt get this lens.
@@FTRek IMHO, its practical value would go up quite a bit with IBIS. Without some sort of IBIS or VR, one is left needing to raise the shutter speed to eliminate any motion from the user.
@@FTRekSimilar opinion to Craig. It’s already good, but IBIS sweetens the deal and makes fast, normal wide to short tele lenses even more useful (though it’s more common to see OIS on short teles anyways). As someone who feels a bit limited in my low light shooting ability (no medium lens faster than 2.8 on a 2013/14 canon, though of course with more expertise I could work around those limitations), the eventual upgrade would feel even more significant. 1 or 2 stops better ISO on mirrorless, 1 or 2 stops faster lens, and then a few more stops on top with IBIS or OIS would probably feel like an entirely different realm of low light possibilities, though I shouldn’t let my expectations run away. Plus being able to focus pretty well at those light levels too. Night street, portraits, events, and my usual environmental
Interestingly, like the 40mm and 28mm lenses, Nikon states that this lens is “dust and drip resistant.” It looks like there are some seals throughout the body of the lens, just not around the mount. I wonder if that has something to do with the plastic mount.
You are kicking GAS, seriously this lens is too tiny and looks good! I want to buy Nikon camera now! We love your style of reviews. Keep up the good job and let me see what I can do for my GAS 😅
It's a great lens. I love it. I've used it under a biiiiig rain. No problem! Great image quality paired to a Nikon z50. VR? No need at this focal lenght since you don't take pictures in complete dark situations. Go for it.
Great review as always. Of the many ones I've watched, this is one I've actually had for 6 months with a Z30. IDK if my lens is defective or this is normal, but there is very strong vignetting at the corners in low light at wide aperture (main reason I got this was for low light). I take all RAW images and have to adjust corrections (vignette control?) in Nikon NX Studio to get many of the wider aperture images to look right. It's less noticeable in bright light as in the vignette testing in this review.
I don't own a Nikon, and most likely never will. I still watch every review, these are brilliant! Amaizing work! Always looking forward to them, especially with Canon, as I have one myself. Thank you for the stellar content and reviews!
I was about to say something similar when I saw your comment. Settling down for the evening, and I wanted to relax and watch a couple of videos, and this is where I started.
i thought long and hard about what camera brand to go with i almost went to sony first, but after looking at the market and the resale market and who was doing what i choose nikon and im so glad i made that choice, every company has something great about them, but for me nikon had what i wanted most and thats alot of nice items of a lower price, the level of equiment i got for the price is unmatched i just bought a z30 off someone for 280 buck and a mini audio mixer that cost me $45 bucks. its hard to catch those type of deals with the more poplular brands that have more popular cameras...anyways happy shooting to all.
so basically this is an awesome lens at f2.8. i had a buddy of mine tell me a long time ago that no matter what you lens you got never shoot it wide open if you can help it. he said if its a 1.4 shoot at f2 that will help you get the sharpest image possible. sounds like he knew exactly what he was talking about.
Hi Chris, always enjoy your reviews and they have helped my chose a couple of lenses... Have you by any chance seen these lenses for Nikon Z mount and thereofore the new ZF? Artra Lab Nonikkor 35mm f1.4. Would be interested to se how good they are....
One of those late night uploads, I’m not complaining .. Anywayy, could someone tell Canon to revive the compact and useful 24-85 3.5-4.5 for their rf-mount?
Gotta admit, the sharpness seems disappointing, even for me who doesn’t have the exacting standards many do these days. At 1080p the middle seems to get a nice ‘bite’ of sharpness at f4 but the corners never really seem to get close, even at 20mp. Wide open is one thing, but I like the option to clean things up when I have the light to stop down. Maybe I’ll check some other images online. If I could find it for under 200$ like another commenter here I’d probably put up with the limitations though.
Ummmm. No in-built VR like the kit lens? No weather sealing? Plastic build and plastic MOUNT? I think I'll wait for the Viltrox 20mm f2.8 to be released very soon for the Z mount this year. And it's only US$158. Basically, the same as this Nikon lens albeit, metal mount. Plus it's got a USB-C port for lens firmware update. And this Viltrox works on FULL Frame, too. ☺️
Weird that the lens doesn't stop down to f/16 - there's the odd occasion where it's useful when taking a long exposure. Also, a shame the corner image quality isn't great, but I guess that's what you get with a cheap plastic disposable lens.
Thanks for another terrific review. After watching so many of them, I'm not sold on Z mount lenses. There are a few high performers, but many of them perform poorly in the corners and exhibit considerable purple fringing/chromatic aberrations, like this 24mm f/1.7. One might get better results using older manual or F mount lenses with an FTZ adapter. And in most cases, it would be a much cheaper alternative. Thanks.
APS-C lenses for RF aren't as necessary, I bought RF 24mm f/1.8 IS macro STM for only 170€ more (new in ofical Canon distribution) than this Z cost, while my lens isn't that much bigger, offer excellent image stabilization, 50% macro capability and it is sharper.
Why oh why isn't it even better than Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 DX F mount lens? Nikon missed an opportunity here. Chris I think you're a tad too lenient on this poor performing lens.
Nikon has made their APS-C line a huge waste. They refuse to add IBIS, and while they made their lenses more expensive than the f mount ones, they refuse to add OIS.
How unfortunate but seems that the affordable Nikon prime lenses are complete trash as build quality. That plastic mount is unforgivable. I have various lenses for my Sony camera - from Sony, Sigma, Zeiss, Tamron, VIltrox, Samyang, Laowa and even TTartisan and noone make those cheap plastic mounts that will get destroyed if I remove the lens 5 times.
I have used this lens for the past month and can confirm it has survived over five lens changes. Interesting that the ones who complain about plastic lens mounts being of poor quality have probably never bought a lens with a plastic mount.
I'd like to know how someone who take care of its lenses could break them as they have plastic mounts. I've had canon, Nikon and olympus plastic mount lenses and I've never had any problems.
I have four plastic mount lenses (nikon 28-80 G, canon 18-55, 55-250, 10-18) and probably have had more in the past, and have so far never had one break or otherwise become unusable on me. In fact, only my FD 300F4, heavy as it was, had it’s mount get messed up by a hard fall (god I need to get that repaired so I can sell or adapt it). There’s something to be said about plastic fantastic gear so light it can probably bounce back from a fall, rather than tearing itself apart with the forces.

Nikon is doing great, in a good place about price / image quality / usability. I hope Nikon will grow its market share.
Mr. Frost, as relatively new photography hobbyist (for 3 years now), I'm a fan of your content. Seeing a minidisc player included in this video has somehow endeared you to me even further. Keep on keeping on! And thanks for the great content.
That was a small blast from the past. Minidiscs were always and still are the coolest portable audio players.
I remember another of his video where Chris talked a bit more about minidiscs :)
Honestly your reviews are the best out there. I've been following you since the beginning of my photography journey a few years back and I'm always happy when I see you reviewed something I'm thinking of getting.

Chris, Thanks for getting to this lens. I’ve switched whole hog into Nikon Z and use a Z50 for travel and every day carry. When Nikon gives us a Z50ii with IBIS i’ll no doubt get this lens.
You think it’s not worth it without ibis ?
@@FTRek IMHO, its practical value would go up quite a bit with IBIS. Without some sort of IBIS or VR, one is left needing to raise the shutter speed to eliminate any motion from the user.

Unfortunately, the Z50II came out and no IBIS
Been waiting for this one! Already bought it and loving it!
I have this lens and I love it! It’s so light and small. It’s a very practical lens! I recommend it to every Zfc and Z30 user!
As a fellow Z30 user, how does it fare in low light conditions?
This is one lens I will be picking up as soon as they release a Z50ii
It reminds of the lovely Canon EF-M 22mm f/2.
pero el canon efm 22 es muy nítido. Es la joya de la corona junto el mítico efm 32mm 1.4
Finally! A 35mm equivalent for the Z apsc. Weather sealing shouldn't have been given a miss though.

I'm selling my Nikon ZFC at end of month, its new & an unwanted gift..
Im away but returning in couple weeks. I bought a spare battery too £50.00
I like it so far. I just purchased it for the z30. Nice light on the go setup.
Is it good in low light conditions?
It's a great lens. I love it. I've used it under a biiiiig rain. No problem! Great image quality paired to a Nikon z50. VR? No need at this focal lenght since you don't take pictures in complete dark situations. Go for it.
Great videos, your delivery is clear and not excessive.
Hey Chris, if you ever ran out of modern lenses to test, would you ever review old ones? Like old Minolta lenses

Hello..
I'm thinking about getting this lens, but hoping to get some lovely astrophotography photos. Do you think it works?
Thanks!
Is the canon 10-24 review coming any time soon ???
I'm a big fan of Christopher's reviews, but this is a DX lens and should have been tested on a DX camera
Been waiting for this! Thanks and great as usual!
Could you mention auto focusing noise in your future videos? Some lenses are not suitable for video because of horrible focusing noise.
Use an external micro and you won't hear a thing of the AF.
I don't own a Nikon, and most likely never will. I still watch every review, these are brilliant! Amaizing work! Always looking forward to them, especially with Canon, as I have one myself. Thank you for the stellar content and reviews!

I wonder how a Canon ef-s 24mm stm pancake lens would fare, adapted on a Canon R7?
I use one on my Canon 77d and it is wonderful.
@1:17 what's wrong with a plastic mount ? It will live a 100 years easily
Thank you for this Charles. I’ve never even thought of a device like this. I think I’ll invest. Looks like fun. Take care
Hi Chris, always enjoy your reviews and they have helped my chose a couple of lenses... Have you by any chance seen these lenses for Nikon Z mount and thereofore the new ZF? Artra Lab Nonikkor 35mm f1.4. Would be interested to se how good they are....
So this is why Sigma didn't release the 23mm 1.4 for Z mount
Great review. Well done.
I'm curious! How big is your test chart?
Thanks for reviewing this lens
I own the lens for my z50 but may try it on my z7.2?
Sony needs this lens. Pancake 24 mm with fast aperture
One of those late night uploads, I’m not complaining ..

Nice profile pic!
Maybe Canon should turn that into their next kit lens

I have tried the 28mm f2.8 and this 24mm wide open is much sharper
На камеру z6|| будет 36мм? На полный кадр
Thanks, shame about the image quality. I definitely won't be getting this one.
GF 110mm F/2?
Given how x100 have been hiped these days l sem z50 plus 24 1.7 is a true alternative with half the cost
This lens is so much better than the Viltrox 23mm 1.4.
Gracias

A go-to lens for cosplay events?

i wish fuji would release a similar lens
f1.7
compact pancake
Fuji already got their tiny f/2 primes
Why should Fuji release an inferior lens like this, which even is not able to fully resolve just 20 MP (!)?
It would be good if u upload IN few HUMAN portraits with this lens
Nice, but they need to make a dx camera with VR, I like ZFC but without VR in the best lenses it's useless for handheld video or low shutter speed
Why oh why isn't it even better than Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 DX F mount lens? Nikon missed an opportunity here. Chris I think you're a tad too lenient on this poor performing lens.
