Thanks for your feedback about this Lens because it's hard to find a complete review for this one. So I've decided to buy it and I love it. Great to walk around with the 16-50 and 50-250. In many situations I can go everywhere with it only. This 35mm equivalent is so versatile that it makes photography so confortable. It's like using a mobile phone with better quality.
Exactly!! I think if someone is looking for a small prime for his nikon apsc camera then this is a really good option. PS thank you for your valuable insight on my video. This really helps me out! :)
@@IliasKoureas yes this is in my bucket list for purchase by this december to be paired with my zfc. currently using a cheap manual focus lens with similar focal length for weekend street outing. need more practice with it as some of my shots are hit and miss despite having focus peaking on :)
@@IliasKoureas ttartisan 23mm. also i shoot with my 16-50 kit whenever its bright for easy casual shooting. else most of my weekend street trip been utilizing the ttartisan 23mm.
Very nice channel. I have a Z30 with a 16-50 3.5 lens and I would like to switch to this 1.7 because I see that I have noise in the house when taking pictures. Do you think it makes a difference?Thank you
Hi Ilias, great review! But I have a question... Your filters are 77 or 72mm, for your Viltrox 85mm if I can remember well, so, what ring adapter are you using for the 46mm filter thread of the Nikkor Z 24mm f/1.7 which it is also the same size of the Kit Lens... And if you can also please tell me where did you purchase it? Thanks in advance for your reply! And Greetings from México!
Thank you mate! To adapt my filter on this lens I just put two step up rings on top of the lens. Since my filter is 72mm I used a 72mm-52mm ring and a 52mm-46mm ring. That way I screwed the two rings on top of each other and then on top of my lens. The rings that I use are really cheap and the company that makes them is called "Kiwi". They do the job excellent.
I chose the Viltrox for the following reasons. 1. I found it for 100€ cheaper than the Nikon. 2. It had the same filter diameter as my Sigma 30mm 1.4 so I didn't have to spend more money for new filters. 3. I had the Viltrox 23mm on Fuji a couple of years ago and had no reservations in picking it up again. It might not be the sharpest lens on the market but I shoot it at 1.4 all the time and have absolutely no complaints. I'd say that people should decide based on their size preferences first and foremost and then the price. Performance is pretty much equal.
A very interesting lens. I'm faced with choosing something light for my Z50, contenders are Sigma 16mm f/1.4, Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4, Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 - and this Nikon 24mm f/1.7. There is a question - what about astrophotography with this lens? Once upon a time I had a 35mm/1.8 crop - overall it’s not bad in terms of aperture, but it’s a little narrow on the crop. Will there be enough grip when using this 24mmm f/1.7? Or is it still more logical and profitable, albeit more expensive, to buy 13mm or 16мм?.. What do you think?
The viltrox 13mm is by far the superior lens for astrophotography. I've personally shot the milky way with the viltrox 23mm 1.4 but you need to do a panorama in order to get big part of the milky way. I would get the 13mm for astro and then choose between the viltrox 23, Nikon 24 or sirui 23mm for general work. If you want a small lens then the Nikon is the right answer. If you want great image quality the viltrox is the best choice. If you want an f1.2 aperture the sirui is the choice. It's up to you and your needs. Also here's a link to one of the panoramas I did with the 23mm (keep in mind to swipe to the second image to see the whole frame. Also the location had a little bit of light pollution) : instagram.com/p/Cy0rcJUsUXc/?igsh=MTBxcWphZmxubnhoNw==
The lens js great for street photography and dark photography. It makes quite a bit of noise (crunching/ clicking) on video picked up in silent situations by the Z 30 high gain microphone. Shame the lens had no VR.
I loveeee that lens for night street photography, will release a video tomorrow with night pictures! VR could be helpful but it would add more cost and size. Would be nice for video tho to have VR 😭
Thank you for your test! It would be interesting to see how the NIkon 24mm compares to the Sigma 30mm. At least the Sigma still has a metal bayonet, is otherwise quite robust and even sealed, while the price difference to the Nikon is not too high.
It would be an interresting test but i can already see some weakness from the sigma : -Twice as big and heavy -A lot more chromatic aberration And maybe a slower AF too, most of the time sigma's lenses aren't as fast with their AF But i guess you'll get a nicer bokeh and better low light with the sigma.
Image quality must be pretty indetical. The differencies are so little that at this point i think it depends if you like the wider focal lenght or not.
I really feel the use of plastic composite vs metal mounting ring is a red herring having used different lenses with the composite mount with absolutely NO ISSUES and then add the fact we are talking about a small very light lens I don't see an issue. lack of sealing could be an issue but that is common nowadays and to state again I can find no sign of wear or looseness in other lenses with composite mounts. and if it cuts a couple of hundred off the price then thats ok too. !
@@daviddyephotography As a matter of fact, the 24mm f1.7 is sealed, it may lack the rubber gasket but everything else is sealed, not perfect no it's still something
Great review! I’m definitely gonna get this lens for my z50. I just wish it comes with vr as i mainly do street photography videos. Nikon put vr in the small kitlens im sure they can also put it in here if they wanted.
VR would be great although it would add to the cost and to size (since that's a prime lens). Personally I never felt the need of VR in my street photography but I would appreciate it for video work 😅

@@DigitalRetro if you have these two black diffusion filter's then you don't really need the shimmer diffusion. I'd rather recommend to play more with the highlights , Clarity and dehaze sliders in order to further manipulate the glowing effect to your liking 🥂
You only zoomed into the upper left corner at f1.7 and concluded that it was generally soft in the corners. Without checking all the other corners, this is a false assumption. I have tested lenses where only one corner or one side of the frame is soft and the opposite side sharp. Therefore, based on this video, the corner sharpness performance of this lens is inconclusive.
