He would explain hand signals and equipment to me. We had binoculars and it was smaller airports during 60’s. You could get a bit closer to the action. Thanks to all who serve. R.I.P. dad. ❤️

I was employed at everts air in Fairbanks for about 10 years. I was a load master for the C-46 and DC-6. Before that I worked at NAC. Great job, long hours when the flight crew needed an extra hand. Got a little stick time in the DC-6. Miss those days. The C-46 was a cool old bird. We hauled a bob cat loader out to a lodge on the back side of Denali one winter. I think it was on twin lakes. They we’re building an addition to the lodge. The cab was removed. Had to have a special brain box to make it functional. Steep ass ramps to unload it. What a trip.

Joe forgets one unwritten rule in aviation. When u have young rookie pilots working for you to make flight hours, and a lot of additional tasks on the side to get those flight hours, u have to let them go when they have their opportunity to get a job with an airliner. Mikey knows much better how to handle the business, people and pilots. Joe and Mr.Know-it-all Duane can learn a lot from Mikey.

I completely disagree with people here siding with Gord just because they hate grumpy Joe. I guarantee the airline that hired him was aware of his progress in flight hours and experience at Buffalo before they offered him the job after only 8 months. They could have trained someone else who was not planning on leaving Buffalo so soon had he not taken another Captain upgrade on the c-46 while they ground other co-pilots at buffalo just so Gord could get the extra hours quicker. It's like the police department for a major city I used to live in.. They have a high crime rate and lower pay compared to the higher paying safer white suburbs around it. but due to it's size, they have a big department and hire a lot. They had many MANY get hired on the city, the city then paid for all the training and the thousands for the cost of the state Police academy, and 6 months to a year later, the officers apply to the safer higher paying suburbs and get hired immediately because they now don't have to pay for the training and academy and the officers hit the streets immediately in the suburbs because they got the academy done. So the city started to make them sign contracts that they must work for the city for 3 years minimum, or if they wish to leave sooner, they have to pay the city back the cost of the State Police academy and training. Buffalo should do something similiar. You become a rampie and put in your time, we will give your flight hours and training to co-pilot, if we offer to train you beyond that to be captain on a aircraft, you must stay a minimum of 1 year after attaining Captain or you must pay us back a part of the money we spent training you to become a captain.

I think the issue lies with the aircrafts certification. Sure any fabricator worth his beans could fab up a set of manifolds for that engine in his sleep, but they wouldn't be certified c46 parts. The FAA, or whatever the heck they call it in canuckistan would have an issue with that. Mr fabricator hasn't paid the bribes.

Gord was aware of a potential job offer with First Air looming for the previous 7-8 months. Of course it was dependent on when they need more pilots he would get the call. In the meantime, as would most pilots looking for the upgrade, it’s strategic to keep quiet and pursue the upgrade (in this case on to the C-46) just in case the First Air pilot role isn’t offered any time soon. Nowhere else would you achieve the upgrade on a C-46 (quite the resumé!).
By being open and honest with Joe and Buffalo that he has intentions to leave for First Air and that although the upgrade on the C-46 is his biggest ambition (as stated by his wife, no less), it would be correct to stay as captain on the DC3 for now. This is why joe is unhappy and upset with Gord whom has been rewarded well by the company for his (almost) 7 years service. Gord is fully aware (he isn’t stupid) why Joe is upset. Joe has seen enough pilots over the 40+ years walk through his doors and can read honesty or lack of on one’s face (supporting evidence IN THE VIDEO). Gord says he expected a handshake from Joe for his time there, yet he missed the point he received captaincy on two legendary aircraft. Joe respected you and your ability. Unfortunately Gord cost Joe and a fellow pilot from an upgrade. As a pilot you do look after yourself and do what’s right for your family. I see why Gord did it. However, Joe feels let down by someone he placed trust and loyalty in. To betray trust someone places in you can lead to such infuriated reactions. This can be problematic for other pilots looking to progress as they will have a difficult time gaining the boss’s trust. Or at least further investigation (appraisals) will need to be conducted. Anyway, Joe can react how he chooses. It’s Joe’s company. At least you know how the boss feels about you, he’ll tell you. Larger companies just do it stealth style ;)

Not every pilot can say I fly a C-46 for a living. Impressive. Although cool to see still flying, those planes are running out. There must be a replacement that can handle the job the 46 does. Maybe the Convair 580 can (?). They're old to but nearly as old as the C-46 or the DC-3s. To keep those old birds flying, new hand made parts must be done but at what cost if even possible? Gord's a very lucky guy to have Nadia.

If they keep running out of parts for the C-46 they will have to either replace the engines with turbines. I’ve heard a few stories on DC-3’s that have been converted that it’s made them a different but actually better airplane. I’d prefer to fly the Lockheed Electra.

Joe, Gord made a decision that was best for his career, the same way that you would make decisions that are best for your company. You like whiners and complainers. Joe, don't complain about it. Just do the right thing, wish the kid well, and move on. And in the future, maybe you'll consider how a leader's behavior toward the people who work for him affect their level of loyalty. You get what you give, Joe.

Just throw a guy in there who has been been shoveling boxes for a year and hasn’t even had tile to read the manual? Then let him do a landing with a captain who is not a CFI? I hope this was all staged for drama or its illegal and very dangerous.

To use criticism that is destructive and not constructive is classic sign s of a cockpit Bully. Shame on you Devon for giving your First Officer a negative training experience. To say something like “I hate doing training” is a clear sign of an incompetent Captain. Shame on you. No wonder you are still flying the old crap and not in a high paying Pilpts slot at a major Airline. Captain W.S. Adler 35,000 Hrs Total time. Type rated B-747, DC-10, B-737, EMB-110.
