- Sparks fly when Joe discovers Gord has taken a job with a rival airline after completing expensive training on one of the Buffalo planes. Larry, a rookie rampie, makes a near fatal error while training on the C-46. A desperate search is launched for elusive C-46 parts.

I lived this as an aircraft mechanic in Fairbanks AK during the 90's, these guy's really are the lifeline for the remote communities of the North Country.
My dad was a jet engine mechanic in Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He left me great stories. He loved planes. We would hang out at airports. He would explain hand signals and equipment to me. We had binoculars and it was smaller airports during 60’s. You could get a bit closer to the action. Thanks to all who serve. R.I.P. dad. ❤️
Would be better if co pilot applicants had at least1000 flt hrs...these large old a/c are complicated; can't throw a young kid just out of flt school to be a co pilot...this kid couldn't find his ass with both hands...sorry state.
I was employed at everts air in Fairbanks for about 10 years. I was a load master for the C-46 and DC-6. Before that I worked at NAC. Great job, long hours when the flight crew needed an extra hand. Got a little stick time in the DC-6. Miss those days. The C-46 was a cool old bird. We hauled a bob cat loader out to a lodge on the back side of Denali one winter. I think it was on twin lakes. They we’re building an addition to the lodge. The cab was removed. Had to have a special brain box to make it functional. Steep ass ramps to unload it. What a trip.
Justin is a great pilot. Following in Arnie’s path. Arnie passed the baton to him. These pilots learn the best way. Top notch instructors and OJT. Just like in medicine. We see one, do one and teach one.
Devin is one of the sharpest pilots I've ever seen. He's responsable for training, DAMN STRAIGHT Larry, ya gotta learn the airplane! If Devin yells at ya, it's to GET IT IN YOUR HEAD! Damn good instructor if ya ask me. Even after you pass, one has to continue to learn this difficult airplane. A good friend of mine was the Capt. on the CAF C-46 many years ago. My dad a Crew Chief on them in the Air Force. Damn good airplane. Good luck Larry! Keep learning.
Joe forgets one unwritten rule in aviation. When u have young rookie pilots working for you to make flight hours, and a lot of additional tasks on the side to get those flight hours, u have to let them go when they have their opportunity to get a job with an airliner. Mikey knows much better how to handle the business, people and pilots. Joe and Mr.Know-it-all Duane can learn a lot from Mikey.
My dad was a 20yr old PBJ pilot in 1944/45 - just like thousands of other 'youngsters' flying the B-17, B-24, B-25, B-29, the Lancaster, Wellington, Halifax and so on. He flew for Saturn Airways and Continental Air Services til he semi-retired in the early 60s.
Gordie took that check ride because he had not heard from First Air since he applied, and had pretty much given up that job. Sheer luck that he gets the call immediately after being promoted to Captain on the C-46. Old man Joe is set in his ways and butthurt about it. I for sure wouldn't work for that hold man
I think Gord should have stayed and put some time in at Buffalo. They have put a fair bit of money and effort into getting the guy where he is.
Joe was being obtuse The kid applied to First Air a long time ago, and to date had had no response. This came out of the blue. The kid was doing Buffalo a favour by filling a spot they needed filling. It's as if there were a bunch of eligible candidates. It's time Joe stepped aside and let Mikey take over. He's got a whole lot better people skills, that's for sure.
I agree! I usually record this show and whenever Joe appears I just fast-forward.
Joe was dead wrong.
Is he even alive anymore ?
@@madmanmechanic8847 yep
I flew the Arctic for Bradley/First Air, including the DC-3 C-FLFR, which is now at Buffalo. Lots of pilots I knew in the Arctic told me they'd never fly for Joe. I wouldn't go that far, but I never applied there because of it.
Man, imagine what an awesome beast that monster would be with some PW-127s on it. In WW2 20 y.o.'s were flying transports, bombers and fighters after 200 hours of basic and primary training.
Fantastic show. Bring it back JOE.
Couple of things;
48 inches of clear ice will hold .......almost anything.
As soon as you clean lake ice off, it starts to thicken even further.
Landing on ice is a sheer pleasure, especially in heavy crosswinds.
I once landed a C-185 on wheel skis on glare ice at Pukatawagan, Manitoba. Ground looped, went around three times, and came to a stop backwards within twenty feet of my party. I couldn't believe they'd board the plane after seeing that, but they got in.
@@paddy1952 Pukatawagan, Pukatawagan, that's where I was beeyorn LOL
@@paddy1952 Pulled into the apron at YNE in a Chieftain years ago and realized it was pure slick ice and I was headed for the bushes. Brought the power way up on the left engine and the airplane spun slowly around and I stopped the slide with "reverse" thrust LOL
@@scheusselmensch5713 We did that in an HS-748 at Cambridge Bay, NWT. Got away with it.
I still miss this show
What goes around .Comes around Joe !!! I think they call it Karma.
When I watch Joe go through his machinations with his workers I think I'm looking at my Old Man. Except, my Old Man didn't have Joe's saving graces. I give Joe a couple chuckles and smile...
For those who want to see the rest, they are all available on Wonder’s channel
I completely disagree with people here siding with Gord just because they hate grumpy Joe. I guarantee the airline that hired him was aware of his progress in flight hours and experience at Buffalo before they offered him the job after only 8 months. They could have trained someone else who was not planning on leaving Buffalo so soon had he not taken another Captain upgrade on the c-46 while they ground other co-pilots at buffalo just so Gord could get the extra hours quicker. It's like the police department for a major city I used to live in.. They have a high crime rate and lower pay compared to the higher paying safer white suburbs around it. but due to it's size, they have a big department and hire a lot. They had many MANY get hired on the city, the city then paid for all the training and the thousands for the cost of the state Police academy, and 6 months to a year later, the officers apply to the safer higher paying suburbs and get hired immediately because they now don't have to pay for the training and academy and the officers hit the streets immediately in the suburbs because they got the academy done. So the city started to make them sign contracts that they must work for the city for 3 years minimum, or if they wish to leave sooner, they have to pay the city back the cost of the State Police academy and training. Buffalo should do something similiar. You become a rampie and put in your time, we will give your flight hours and training to co-pilot, if we offer to train you beyond that to be captain on a aircraft, you must stay a minimum of 1 year after attaining Captain or you must pay us back a part of the money we spent training you to become a captain.
Those manifolds would be easy enough to make. I don't get why they would want to rebuild junk.
Wouldn't say those exhaust manifolds would be easy to make, but they could be fabricated by a good shop. And it probably would be a better system than the original with the better materials today. All it takes is time and money.
Simple. Money. It's cheaper to find an existing part than create a new one. Especially for a one-off like a C-46.
I don’t see why new exhaust manifolds couldn’t be made. Probably cheaper than finding a plane to replace the 46’s.
I think the issue lies with the aircrafts certification. Sure any fabricator worth his beans could fab up a set of manifolds for that engine in his sleep, but they wouldn't be certified c46 parts. The FAA, or whatever the heck they call it in canuckistan would have an issue with that. Mr fabricator hasn't paid the bribes.
Being promoted from the ramp to the cockpit without a lot of recent control time is not good.
The incident with the pitot heat 'failure' is an example. His airspeed indicator is showing the aircraft is slowing down. But he would feel no difference in control forces or feel. That is from being rusty.
It's so freaky to hear them talking about night when it's still light outside. Must be weird to live that far north 😅
Buffalo Joe is a great character from the old school, when the owner operators were hands on and didnt mind putting staff in their place. All those old school guys were like that. I knew a Bus Driver/Charter owner who also was a bit like Joe. Old fashioned, straight up, and you like them for their honest opinion.
LOL You're a joke. He didn't put that poor guy in his place, He WRONGLY accused him because he's an old obsolete douchbag spilling his frustration on innocents. That was tough luck and that's it.
I looked up the tail number on the C46. It was wrecked 7 years ago.
That one ?
@@CFITOMAHAWK C-GTXW 9-25-15
I believe they lost an engine coming in to Deline fully loaded. Pilots did the engine out procedure but lost so much altitude and speed they couldn't risk putting the gear down without outright stalling the plane so they bellied it onto the runway.
I LOVE THIS SHOW, PERIOD!!!
Rule 1: Never pass up a chance for a type rating. You never know what’s coming or not coming.
It´s so sad hearing Joe "bark" without knowing the facts - no wonder ppl leave😔
Think it's time to get some newer planes. 😮
No wonder so many people leave Buffalo Airways!!!
Joe offers an opportunity to trade sweat equity for flying time. Most people don't have the money to pay for twin engine flying time, so it's a fair trade. FJB! 🤠
@@jamesburns2232 Oh is that what you call it? An opportunity? The "opportunity" to be worked like an animal while being hounded by a constantly angry, yelly, screamy boss!? Screw that, and hard. I'll be an IP before I have to build up time THAT way. The hazing and the abuse are just not worth it.
We fab exhausts everyday out or many different materials in this world . They are looking for old junk ... build them and they will fly
Yeah, when you get to an air museum for parts you better start thinking about retirement of the aircraft. You are getting to the dregs and there aren’t many more left.
God bless him and a long and prosperis carrea
Joe your a mean sour grapes guy you’ve left no open door for Gord to return 🤦♂️
I follow Buffalo. The last video they talked about having issues with the cargo division running late and many misdirected packages. I noticed they never mentioned damages. Every video I see they throw everything around like it's not important.
Well tell me if I am wrong, but did not Gord get the call from the airline AFTER his successful check ride? Joe needs to listen to his own advice or maybe take the stick out of his backside. A simple call to Gord's fiance then and there would have cleared the issue up.
sorry but Joe was way out of line all he had to do was call first air and he could have verified that they called after Gord had taken his pilots checkride and wether Joe likes it if he had been in ,Gords
shoes he would have done the same thing its a shame that Gords last day had to be one of hard feelings but that was solely because JOES ego one of these days JOE is going to call the wrong person a liar and he is going to get decked
Gord was aware of a potential job offer with First Air looming for the previous 7-8 months. Of course it was dependent on when they need more pilots he would get the call. In the meantime, as would most pilots looking for the upgrade, it’s strategic to keep quiet and pursue the upgrade (in this case on to the C-46) just in case the First Air pilot role isn’t offered any time soon. Nowhere else would you achieve the upgrade on a C-46 (quite the resumé!).
By being open and honest with Joe and Buffalo that he has intentions to leave for First Air and that although the upgrade on the C-46 is his biggest ambition (as stated by his wife, no less), it would be correct to stay as captain on the DC3 for now. This is why joe is unhappy and upset with Gord whom has been rewarded well by the company for his (almost) 7 years service. Gord is fully aware (he isn’t stupid) why Joe is upset. Joe has seen enough pilots over the 40+ years walk through his doors and can read honesty or lack of on one’s face (supporting evidence IN THE VIDEO). Gord says he expected a handshake from Joe for his time there, yet he missed the point he received captaincy on two legendary aircraft. Joe respected you and your ability. Unfortunately Gord cost Joe and a fellow pilot from an upgrade. As a pilot you do look after yourself and do what’s right for your family. I see why Gord did it. However, Joe feels let down by someone he placed trust and loyalty in. To betray trust someone places in you can lead to such infuriated reactions. This can be problematic for other pilots looking to progress as they will have a difficult time gaining the boss’s trust. Or at least further investigation (appraisals) will need to be conducted. Anyway, Joe can react how he chooses. It’s Joe’s company. At least you know how the boss feels about you, he’ll tell you. Larger companies just do it stealth style ;)
Joe has always been out of order, he owns the company and I respect him but he does have an ego and man management is not one of his core skills…
... and the annular combustion chambers of today's turbo jet and turbo fan engines are 3D printed. That's the solution to new exotic exhaust manifolds I would think
those old radials are a mechanical nightmare!
Not every pilot can say I fly a C-46 for a living. Impressive. Although cool to see still flying, those planes are running out. There must be a replacement that can handle the job the 46 does. Maybe the Convair 580 can (?). They're old to but nearly as old as the C-46 or the DC-3s. To keep those old birds flying, new hand made parts must be done but at what cost if even possible? Gord's a very lucky guy to have Nadia.
If they keep running out of parts for the C-46 they will have to either replace the engines with turbines. I’ve heard a few stories on DC-3’s that have been converted that it’s made them a different but actually better airplane. I’d prefer to fly the Lockheed Electra.
Sadly this was a unfortunate situation, it seems Gord only got the job offer that evening after the check ride. I can understand Joe being "up set" about the situation, & while Joe is great in so many ways, I'm sorry to say that is no way for a president of a company to behave, shouting & sweating like that is a no no these day's, in a modern company HR would have a field day! Maybe it's time for Joe to retire & enjoy the rest of his day's, he's sure earned it.
We was made aware a few episodes ago…
BS. He just lost a few thousand dollars and you dont want to hear him cursing ? Are you that fragile ? Man up kiddo.. Cargo guys are not that gay.
Well Joe isn't a snowflake like you. You wouldn't make it in his world.
Joe, you have the same problems as many old school employers... you gotta learn to deal with "todays workers"... Employees today are a resource not a punching bag...
Nadja so pretty. God bless them
This is why i didn't become a Buffalo commercial pilot. Turns out I developed a real aversion to cold water, mosquitos, and very loud noises. 😶
Oh. No. Wait. That's why i didn't become a Navy SEAL. 😬
Never mind.
What a dangerous group. Surprised they haven't been shut down by the FAA.
They're Canadian, obviously the FAA has no jurisdiction, but I def agree they would be far from my first choice for a job in aviation

Joe has seen enough pilots over the 40+ years walk through his doors and can read honesty or lack of on one’s face (supporting evidence IN THE VIDEO). Joe looks after Joe... end of story.
@@thorpowell6571 Whatever Joe's feelings, he shouldn't have blown Gord out as he did by virtually kicking his ass down the road!..Joe should be happy that Gord is going to continue in the tradition of being a pilot just like himself..You can't take words back once spoken.
@@swingmanic When Gord looks back in a month or so, he'll be laughing about how it all went down. After all , Gord is a legacy since his Dad was an airline pilot for 35 years. 🤠
He should have paid back the money after getting the job offer. Right thing to do on his part.
These exhaust manifolds can be repaired by welding
l thought Joe was going to take a swing at him. Nice boss!
Hasn't Buffalo got people who can repair these exhaust parts?? Do you need a good welder??
Joe has never been wrong in his entire life…………and as an old man, he needs to be careful, how he speaks to young men, or he’ll find out what the inside of an ambulance looks like - he’s lucky Gord is a professional.
Gord's Dad was an airline pilot and he knows he's also going to an Airline pilot job, so he probably will laugh it all off in short order. No need to become violent and escalate an argument into an assault that would ruin his career. 🤠
Time to go Joe. He is trashing his legacy. I feel like he doesn’t care about his people. What a shame.
@@danh4097 Not everybody has the money to attend Embry Riddle. Joe gives young people an opportunity to fly heavy twin engine airplanes in exchange for rampie labor. Joe has given the opportunity for many young people with their dream to become pilots with little or no money.
People who dun Joe for this are snowflakes. 🤠
Now there is some really bad advice, the aviation business like most is a small world, attempting to punch out your boss is career suicide, since you are a key board tough guy you should learn that as well
There were lots of "Joes" during the years I flew in the Arctic and Boreal North. Assaulting anybody is a quick way out of the industry. In Canada you need RCMP/CSIS clearance, along with your pilot's license, to access restricted areas, ie: the ramp. A criminal record would screw that up pretty fast. So would the reputation it brought. I was surprised to read such an ill-considered remark in this particular forum.
Jb weld that effing cracks man
captains got an attitude
I believe the C-46 was one of the primary aircrafts in the Berlin airlift.
Larry is being screwed, he needs a conversion “course” on the 46 and proper “training” this is just plain wrong….
Totally awesome episode😎
Gord should have told Joe where to stuff his finger.
Let’s be honest the young guys my age don’t give a crap about anything but themselves. Buffalo airways has never had a fatality in its history and flies the hardest dangerous flying in the world . Joe you’ve done something right . Wonder if Air Canada can say the same .
Well done Larry
I think every young person should have an employer like Buffalo Joe. Helps them to enjoy working for a company that treats you with respect.
Love to see if today’s pilots are even pilots or just button pushers
Joe, Gord made a decision that was best for his career, the same way that you would make decisions that are best for your company. You like whiners and complainers. Joe, don't complain about it. Just do the right thing, wish the kid well, and move on. And in the future, maybe you'll consider how a leader's behavior toward the people who work for him affect their level of loyalty. You get what you give, Joe.
Why not 3D print the exhausts? Koenigsegg 3D print their exhausts for their 1800 bhp cars?
That's what I was thinking. The part could easily be replicated with modern technology and made with better material. I wonder why they don't do that 🤷♂️
That's BS. A poor teacher or someone who doesn't want to teach shouldn't be doing it. If I were his boss and something happened, I would hold the teacher responsible and sack the teacher, not the student.
How bout a welder fellas
Mig, Tig, Stainless steel or arc welding. Exhaust pipes are not a job for JB Weld. 🤠
We all worked for a Joe before, gets old real quick.
Why don't they just get new exhausts made? Joe needs to grow the hell up and act like an Adult already, No one wants the stupid Childish Drama from the boss and such behavior does not make people want to keep working for you. I do not blame the young lad going to a more professional airline
Remember this is a production series for entertainment purposes, a LOT is staged for effect! The anger showed y Joe is all part of the show😂
Sad. They are offering a life line to remote communities. The faa turns a blind eye with that kind of air lines. But do not dare them openly.
Buffalo airlines should be grounded. Every time these guy fly there's an emergency!!!
what? the pitot tube alarm do not know how to fix?
As much as i love this show, being firmer a DC 3 captain and Carvair DC-4 pilot This was just Piss poor training program
Blaming the First officer for his poor performance
Sarcastic training capt?
Got no preflight brief how to set the power or how to manage his tasks as a new pilot .Throwing him onto the swimming pool and hope he can swim.sorry Buffalo but you guys can do much better than that.
Exactly my thoughts. If the C46 is a 2 crew minimum aircraft, what they are doing apprehensible. Just throw a guy in there who has been been shoveling boxes for a year and hasn’t even had tile to read the manual? Then let him do a landing with a captain who is not a CFI? I hope this was all staged for drama or its illegal and very dangerous.
@@BigLittlePilot Yes sure its all staged, this is reality tv unfortunately.
Reminds me of old days in Fairbanks
not hard to manufacture the exhaust parts
Have to remember, unlike your car every part has to have approval from the CAA or FAA in the states. Even the printer paper in the airliner I fly has a number printed on it showing it’s FAA approved.
Joe would rather go with old scrap parts than spend the money to have a system made.
Why can't you weld them up?
Stuffing an oily rag into the engine nacelle?
JOE ,RIGHT, USED ,YOU SADE ...
Lighten up Joe.
Actively poaching companies offers get people with little loyalty that will then bail out at the next offer. These unethical companies will also dump an employee when they find a cheaper employee to replace him.
Sorry---that's at 36:30
Joe was right. This kid should have stayed longer after getting an upgrade from the company. And his talking back to Joe was rude and immature.
At he is First Air problem now
I know it is all dramatized. But if you want that the FAA keeps you flying this kind of vids is not good for you.
