  • This time we explore The Arbiter's Grounds, my personal favourite dungeon in Twilight Princess. In a sense, it's almost like two dungeons in one, but executed in the best way possible.

I think the thing Twilight Princess did better than any other game in the series is the implied history and events of the dungeons before you get there. Like, they all have this vibe of function of some sort, and all of them are done well.

definitely a nice touch. I think the game is subtly hinting at the alternate course of history that is the child timeline; if the events of Ocarina of Time never happened--Ganon swears loyalty begrudgingly, the King (or a subsequent Hylian monarch) apparently annexes the Spirit Temple and uses it as a prison? interesting/compelling mystery

The context of the Arbiter's Grounds in the child timeline after Ocarina is great lore to get into. It basically seems like the spirit temple co-opted by Hyrule after the Gerudo were conquered (and likely displaced) after kid Link warned Zelda about Ganondorf. It brings some pretty adult concepts to the series (like OoT/MM did before it) but it's not shoved in your face, it's up to you to look at the deeper implications.

    • @joeyreidelbach5509

Actually arbiters grounds was confiscated and occupied by the Hylians after the Gerudo-Hylain Civil War that took place thr Sametime that young link was in land of terminal to look for his fairy friend and when the gerudo lost the war the gerudos that allied wirh Ganondoef were executed and the ones that were against Ganondorf that were able to live but were force to exile there lands and the Hylians converted the spirit temple to arbiters grounds.

That is where you're intended to deal with Imp Poes for the first time, but you can actually take down at least two before this point. Probably others, as well, but the ones I know about are:
In Faron Woods, when you're supposed to be getting Kakariko Bridge, you can go to the other portal first and head through the area with the poison mist, and when you reach the hollowed-out stump, there'll be an Imp Poe waiting.
In an amphitheater area off of Hyrule Field on the east side of Castle Town -- it's imp-ortant for the Sky Writing collection later -- there's yet another Imp Poe you can battle, even as Midna is incapacitated.
Speaking of doing things early, you can actually meet the adventurers before starting the Lakebed Temple. Rusl isn't there yet, and since Telma is still in Kakariko and can't introduce you, they don't know who you are. Auru and Ashei are annoyed that you're there, while Shad ribs you for sporting the legendary hero LOOK. Meeting them at this point changes the dialogue you can hear when you're crossing ropes above the room, and later when you meet them, either at the bar or when they're investigating their mysteries.

this used to be my favorite dungeon and while the spinner room is fun, the dungeon itself does have some pacing issues with how it crams the spinner near the end. that being said though, that room is still a lot of fun and stallord is easily the best boss in the game.

  • @hambartha
    @hambartha Год назад +1

Great work on this dungeon analysis with RMFH too. There is so much to unpack with this dungeon, where to even begin? There is so much narrative elements between Zant cursing the hero to his 'wolf-form' as well as Midna dying - Zelda sacrificing herself to save Midna as well as seeking out The Master Sword, The Mirror of Twilight and The Resistance... Certainly the most challenging of circumstances a hero in a Zelda Game has come across and it all seemed for naught when Zant appeared directly in front of you so early in the game - it was really unexpected. He easily overpowered the Hero, Midna and The Light Spirit Lanayru with not much effort required at all. After finally finding The Master Sword, the curse is broken, Link is now able to freely transform to his 'wolf-form' at will - a great call back to the transformation masks from Majora's Mask. Encountering The Skull Kid again (very possibly the same Skull Kid from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask) is also a great call back to those games but how on earth is The Skull Kid still alive after all this time when The Hero of Time is now a ghostly stalfos who acts as a spiritual aid to The New Hero? Is The Skull Kid cursed to live forever? Who knows.
Getting to the dungeon itself requires extensive effort, you have to seek out a member of The Resistance in Lake Hylia who gives you a backstory of The Arbiter's Grounds (a prison for the worst criminals). You then need to speak to the main clown entertainer at the centre of Lake Hylia to be able to use his cannon to launch you over to The Gerudo Desert and there is not a single Gerudo that appears to be there which implies that there was a huge civil war with The Hylians who most likely wiped out The Gerudo Race due to their ties with Ganondorf forgetting that perhaps not all The Gerudo People followed Ganondorf and probably saw him as a ruthless tyrant who ruled over them. How then are they able to appear along with a much more populated Sheikah Tribe in Breath of the Wild? So many mysteries... Midna gives even more narrative info about her own people throughout all of this. Midna herself seems to be part of this 'Interloper Tribe' who was sealed away to a different realm yet they managed to escape somehow and for what purpose? An enemy camp is standing guard right at The Arbiter's Grounds. Strange that enemies would set up camp next to an abandoned prison, what are they guarding? Another fight with King Bulbin ensues, The Hero is victorious again!
The Arbiter's Grounds has symbolism which connects to The Spirit Temple. Are they the same building or is it another building altogether? It's possible that The Spirit Temple was desecrated by Hylian Forces in pursuit of Ganondorf in order to repurpose it as a prison and therefore an example to anyone who works with Ganondorf to be punished by The King of Hyrule. The Snake Woman Statue is a mystery but a symbolic reference to The Spirit Temple. Who is she? Is she some unknown 'evil goddess' who is perhaps The Creator of 'Demise?' The music does seem to reflect a certain 'hollow quality' to the music of 'The Spirit Temple.' It's full of traps and of course the four poes seems to be a call back to The Four Poe Sisters from The Forest Temple. These Dungeon Poes are distinctly different from regular Poes much like The Poe Sisters were different to the regular poes from Ocarina of Time. It's an odd similarity to make in a completely unrelated dungeon - it seems out of place. All of the main doors of this dungeon seem to have a design similar to The Boss of The Dungeon? Was a beast deliberately sealed there and was this perhaps meant as some kind of execution for the worst criminals? The Mini-boss of this dungeon is perhaps the most frightening of all Zelda Enemies throughout hte series with the name 'Death Sword.' Was this enemy actually some kind of cursed sword object created by Ganondorf himself? More use of dark magic? Who knows. This dungeon offers as much speculation as Stone Tower Temple. The dungeon item is epic - The Spinner. Within the confines of The Dungeon and its tricky traps this item works wonders and also very effective against The Dungeon Boss. Zant appears yet again by surprise as if he knew The Hero was coming? He resurrects this massive skeletal beast and The Boss Music from both Dodongo's Cavern and The Fire Temple's Boss Music plays. Why that music in particular, what relevance does it have with this dungeon? Yet again it seems out of place... The Boss Battle is very epic, in fact, the best boss battle yet in the game and takes away from the traditional pacing of 'when to attack.' The boss has a 2nd phase where the players must chase the skeletal head with the spinner and then slash it with your sword. It is incredibly satisfying. More mysteries with the narrative and this dungeon and will the fans ever get an explanation? Who knows!

  • @professoreff3483

my second favourite dungeon in this game (after Lakebed Temple) by the narrowest of margins. I agree the spinner is woefully underused elsewhere in the game. I love how this map/mythology continues to back up the notion that this building is totally an Ocarina of Time temple further down the line in the alternate timeline...the arrangement of the map/proximity/connection of the desert to Lake Hylia also backs this up.
Theory: you know that depression in the sand in the middle of the desert that is uncrossable without the hookshot? Could that be the remnant of the waterfall/stream to Lake Hylia that goes under the Gerudo Bridge in Ocarina of Time?

We will never experience dungeons like this anymore in the future sadly... :( this is so much better in each aspect than the modern zelda dungeon formular. Each room here is authentic and full of context. Compare this to the windtemple in Totk, which isnt constructed like an airship would be constructed. Damn... What happened? I really don't understand how they could go there from this high quality dungeon design. Its so disappointing...

I think it was said somewhere that the new devs working zelda pretty much wanted to reinvent every single aspect of the series in a major reboot/overhaul. And it happened in an era where the words "open world" are basically crack to a lot of people. I just can't get into it. It doesn't have the handcrafted feel it used to.

AG's biggest set back is the navigational structure but what saves this dungeon is the good room variety, has a little bit of spatial awareness despite hand holding, makes good use of wolf link and the spinner room is one of the most fun dungeon rooms. the heart piece locations though are too easy to find however the mini-boss and the boss were really good.

The spinner should have been able to rotate the day cycle (It could contain the God of Rotation.. or something). This would have made the spinner actually useful (besides the bits of track shoehorned in every now and again). It also lines up quite nicely, as Arbiter's Grounds is the point where Poe hunting is really introduced, and being able to control the day/night cycle would be a huge convenience.
