    Common Questions I get: (excuse the sass, that's just how I talk to everyone.)
    Q) Why don't you use a source port like ioquake?
    A) When someone is building a retro 486 computer, you're not gonna ask that person "Why not use DosBox instead?". The point of this video is to get Quake 3 Arena in it's original, purest form, working on modern systems. And also to fix something that the Steam version should've fixed in the first place since (to my knowledge) it is still using the original executable that we've been using for decades.
    Q) There's so many things you don't understand about how the code of Quake 3 works. Do you really think you're an authority on the technical ins and outs of Quake 3?
    A) I never said I was. It's just a lot of casual players, that often are playing the game for the first time, that are trying to get the game working with minimal effort without being required to download 3rd party apps like ReShade or a source port, have throughout the years been given either advice that's not very helpful or user friendly. At the time of me making this video, there wasn't any tutorial out there that I felt adequately got the game to work in a way that I would be happy with, and others shouldn't either. If there is a tutorial video out there, that even a child can understand, from someone more qualified than me, it doesn't yet exist as far as I know.
    Q) My copy of Quake 3 looks fine, and your tutorial made it look worse.
    A) If your copy of Quake 3 looked and ran fine, then why do you need my tutorial to fix something that doesn't need fixing in the first place? The problems that people encounter doesn't happen to everyone. Some graphics cards or certain drivers mess with the games ability to set the brightness and gamma levels freely (because for some reason, Quake 3 changes the gamma levels at the OS level instead of in-engine, which some cards or drivers won't allow). Which means that on the other hand there are also some cards or drivers that won't screw with the game's brightness levels. Changing something that is already correct to anything else... is incorrect.
    Q) Even after I applied these fixes you showed in your tutorial, the game still doesn't quite look like how I remember it.
    A) And it never will. That ship has already sailed years ago when the industry decided to stop using CRTs. The point of the tutorial is to get the individual graphical elements to look correct relative to each other. In other words: These commands will get the game to look right internally ("ignorehwgamma" does the opposite of this). But externally, the game has no control over this. That is totally up to the user. If the game is too washed out, then lower the gamma. If the visuals are too flat looking, then you might need to recalibrate your monitors black levels and raise it's peak brightness to give the game's dynamic range more room to stretch its legs, because again, some of these fixes actually widens the game's dynamic range.
    ...You might believe I think very little of those that watches my video, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. If you are here looking for a solution to a problem that the lamen didn't notice, then you know what it is that needs fixing. This tutorial is really just here to save you the time that would've been spent on trying to find this stuff out yourself through trial and error, which is what I had to do. This video is not dictating on how you should play the game, but simply as a springboard to get Quake 3 Arena looking and running the way you want it to.

    I'm all for Quake 3's art style blooming like it did in 99. Although with these settings (changing r_mapOverBrightBits & r_OverBrightBits) and the gamma set to either 1.2 or 1.4, the Color and Tone is still off. Sure the ingame brightness option works with these settings, but it still doesn't quite fix the original look of Quake 3. Yep. People will just have to experiment to see what works best for their setup. Hey, a general tip for some who are not aware, but the Quake 3 (and Quake Live) console supports Wildcard Characters. In this case "*". Similar to Windows Search, in fact. Anyways, one of the bet uses for this is with the /cvarlist command. This allows you to enter partial cvars like so "/cvarlist *cg_". If you input that into the console, you will get all commands with the "cg_" prefix. It can also be used to help search for keywords such as "/cvarlist *fov", which will output the various field of view commands you can tweak. I've found this tip most useful if you're already somewhat familiar with the console but have perhaps forgotten specific commands.

As a monthly q3 tournament holder, I learned the hard way, that this version has a critical bug that causes weapons to shoot by themselves. This is a result of using USB mouses, which is not something the original game was designed for, as USB was not a standard at the time yet. The source port that we switched to, which fixed this issue, and that continues to work on windows XP is Quake 3E. I also tried a SpaceOrb over serial which was insanely cool, but I had to bolt the damn thing to my desk, which kinda defeated the idea of a handheld controller. Just to nitpick... when brightening with gamma 1.4 that also fudges the hue and saturation of the colours a little bit. This isn't Quake's fault, it's just what happens when you apply an exponent to the RGB channels - the RGB balance won't be preserved.
    Another way to do it is use a custom shader to convert RGB to Lab, then apply a brightness curve to the L component, then convert back to RGB. This should preserve the hue and saturation of colours since the L component is supposed to represent only the lightness separately from the hue and saturation. But the improvement would be small and most people wouldn't notice. For instance a skin tone would look slightly more red tinted and saturated using the L method, and slightly more cyan and desaturated using the RGB gamma method.

      Yeah, the game no longer looks 100% accurate to what it used to. Then again, I guess that has already happened the moment we stopped using CRTs. But if I started including ReShade or some other app to get the game to look right. A lot of less than tech-savvy individuals would probably wouldn't want to bother and just deal with the problems. I'm not dismissing what you are saying because in extreme cases like with Quake 2, I use ReShade to fix the brightness/gamma issues.
      But with Quake 3 I decided to focus more on relative accuracy, meaning, how bright was certain parts of a map relative to darker areas. This was my main problem with "ignorehwgamma" because, especially in q3dm6, it made sunlight that highlighted certain parts of the floor, to be just as dark as the parts that weren't being bathed in sunlight.
      If the visuals look too washed out, it's usually because the driver settings or monitor needs the black levels to be as black as possible, with the brightness as high as is comfortable, and it actually will look very close to what the game used to look like.
      I want to do another video about this subject, but we'll see.

    Compared to Quake 1 and 2 source ports, Quake 3 Arena source ports are lazy and complicated to setup in my opinion. Look at Yamagi Quake 2, an easy to setup solution than inmediatly gives you a modern 16:9 experience out of the box. But for Quake 3, if you use ioQuake3 out of the box everything will look scretched and the weapon fov will look out of place at higher resolutions, nobody tells you that you have to install "extra mods" to make the game look right. I ended up installing 5 extra mods on ioQuake3 to finally have a decent experience. I hope that Nightdive Studios remasters Quake 3 soon to never depend on ioquake3 again.

      Hm... I'm not sure. I'm still on windows 10. However, even on older OSs, there are some apps that dont work if you're relying on Windows's built-in audio driver rather than using the manufacturer's driver, like many motherboards use drivers from Realtek.
      And if you are using that then try updating or rolling back to a different version of your driver.
      If you are still having problems, try changing your audio profile in your driver to something more compatible like stereo instead of 5.1 sound. Change 96khz to 44 or 48khz. Or maybe in the game itself, change from high quality to low quality or the other way round. Check your volume controls since windows can actually lower or even mute volume for some apps while others are set to loud. And i guess the final thing you can try is if you have multiple outputs, Some apps will only work through 1 and not all outputs. This is one of the reasons why i dont plug my headphones in the front IO but in the back... or you could just link all the IO to all playback the same sound channel.
      And if all that fails then use ioquake instead of quake3.exe. It's a source port that runs well on modern machines.
      Hope you get it working.

    Under no circumstance do you want to run quake3 with vsync.
    The game is BUILT to be fast and it's BUILT to be the most responsive without vsync.
    Everyone and their mother used 125 FPS in this game when we played, and that is mostly physics and jump trajectory. Anything higher or lower f-cks with it. For instance 333 fps gives you longer latteral jump, but smashes you on the head with vertical.
    250, just like Call of Duty 2, works fine, with 5-10% of jumps not available.

    to make it clear: you are playing and click mouse 1, the game has like a 1-frame hiccup, and continues firing the weapon until you click again, like if it didn't register the release of the input. it has to be something with framerate sync or input processing, but i've tried everyithing forever.

    4) vsync and buffering must always be disabled, period - when gaming in hundreds of fps even with 60 Hz it doesn't matter, we played back then at someting like 75-85 Hz CRTs just fine so you don't need your fancy freesyncs-nsyncs too

    So much wrong information. Old school player here. All that vsync info is wrong. Don't mess with it, it's 120fps and deal with it, with a multiple on refresh rate. You see old configs with people doing 333 and sv_fps +20 on servers, but all that does is break the engine even further, with only placebo benefit. Up the default fps from 85fps to 120fps(125fps shown) and sv_fps 20 is what the engine is designed for. Leave it. Overbright was a hack, implemented via drivers, and is lost when win7 clamped the gamma ramp. It can be undone with unlocking the old behavior in registry. Sourceports and messing with the rendering doesn't fix it. ioquake3 or derivatives introduces broken mouse handling and rendering with lag. Raw input and cpu yielding breaks so much with linear input. Even the official quakelive port is very broken, from the original code

      I actually do agree with you for the most part. My default has always been 120 v-sync off. But I feel that telling people alternatives on how to get it to work with v-sync on is better than just letting people have the game default to 60fps because of their 60Hz displays.

    • @BaconSenpai
      @BaconSenpai Год назад

      @@GTXDash Good video. Vsync is a very outdated way of smoothing the screen. SpecialK/RTSS with variable refresh is a much better way. Look up scanline sync or latent sync. They are very powerful tools and in most cases produce even less input lag then having "low latency" mode on in video card drivers. (You're basically playing the game with vsync off but still syncing frames somewhat). If your PC is somewhat modern you can also lower input lag even further using SpecialK. These modes still have a tear line on the screen however it remains stationary and you can shift it off screen.
      Also, I can't remember but there is an r_customaspect cvar that should fix the stretching problem. r_roundimagesdown "0" will produce even higher quality textures, subdivisions should be set to 0, sv_fps should be 125 to match your client, because it isnt the stone age and modern internet can handle more than that, but doesnt really make a difference if the dedicated server itself is using the default 20. Lodbias 0, Lodscale 0, etc etc. Better graphics in this game is questionable anyways, as the only people I imagine playing it is for competitive reasons and play on picmip 9 with vertex lighting lol.

    • @BaconSenpai
      @BaconSenpai Год назад

      333 is not a placebo and there's a reason it was banned when punkbuster was enabled on servers. It gives you ridiculous jump height and air accel. Also setting it to 125 gives the best jump height and air accel. The game shouldn't be displaying 125 if you set it to 120, something weird going on there.

    • @lopwidth7343
      @lopwidth7343 Год назад

      @@BaconSenpai Yes, it breaks the engine. Jump hight and air accel etc. With placebo i mean regarding the modern notation that more frames is “everything”. The engine rounds to a division of 1000, and the default of 85 displays 90fps, so dno why, but setting 120fps in that line. It also breaks the engine, since physics are frame rate dependent, but was the agreed upon normal. Probably a timing and refresh rate thing. CRTs where 85hz at the time, then 120hz in the early 2000’s

    • @GTXDash

      Might be a resolution problem, sometimes if the game runs a resolution that the monitor doesn't support then it just crashes. Go into the game folder and into basicq3 and find q3config.cfg. delete it and then startup the game again. If it still doesn't work then open the file in a text editor and find "seta r_mode" change the number to 4 (it should look like this: seta r_mode "4"). If the command doesn't exist then just add it in the file, and if the file itself doesn't exist then create a text file and rename it to q3config.cfg and put the command in the file.
      If this doesn't work then it may be an issue of openGL not being installed properly, so maybe update or reinstall your video driver.
      If all fails then maybe just use a Quake3 source port like ioquake3, that will help with any compatibility problems.
