Hi Nick - Your videos are very educational and entertaining. Thank you. I have a 2002 F250 Super Duty w/ a 5.4L gas engine. I installed the Transgo 'Tugger' kit and from what I can tell from my research, the Transgo 4R100-LU is only for use in diesel engine applications. Is that correct? Thanks again.
Brother what a great video!! This is exactly what I needed to see. I appreciate you taking the time to show us how to do this. You got a sub from me keep it up bro bro!
Great video How does the 4R100-LU kit work? The PCM is still sending PWM signals to the PWM solenoid. Please explain this. I bought a 4R100-LU but am worried I need a non-PWM solenoid pack. Thanks
The lock up kit mechanically converts the torque converter apply sequence from a modulated (continuous) apply to an on-off. The Transgo kit is designed to work with the PWM solenoid pack whereas the Superior Tech kit (same principal) has you purchase a non-PWM solenoid pack.
@@nickstransmissions Thats is great info thanks. Have you found at what PWM signal the transgo 4R100-LU locks on? I realize at a PWM of 0% that would be off. Does it stay off unitil a PWM of say 50% and then turn on for all PWM above 50% or some other number?
My guess is prior to 50% signal based on feedback from customers but that is purely a guess. Their feedback is that it comes on earlier than when the PWM valve train was installed prior to rebuild. I'm also not entirely sure it's necessary, especially if you will be running a converter with a custom-low stall speed. That kit is intended to reduce the slip and corresponding heat that PWM can generate over an 'on-off' CC apply strategy. I haven't used it enough to reach a definitive conclusion. I also recall seeing somewhere that Transgo intends it to be used with the Tugger kit, not independently. I'd give a call to Transgo on Tuesday. They are generally very helpful and can perhaps provide some more detailed information about the kit.
I'm installing a Sonnax kit and am missing the smaller damper spring for the pump boost valve. Can't find it anywhere unless i buy a new pump or whole tranny. Any chance you can sell and mail any spares you have.
I don’t sell parts however if you purchase the Transgo SK-E4OD basic shift kit, the springs you need will be in there. Alot cheaper than buying a whole new pump or transmission.
It depends on the condition of the pump upon teardown/inspection...Typically, pumps from 4R100s out of private party-owned vehicles not pushed overly hard can be reinstalled as is (assuming clearances are within spec) but commercial / hard-working diesel vehicles esp those with lots of idle time, usually have bodies that aren't perfectly flat anymore and need remachining. I always recommended it just to eliminate any potential concern after it goes back in...I've been installing those Sonnax oversized gear sets in all 4R100s and E4ODs I rebuild and have had very good luck w/them.
Great video. I am having an issue with a 2004 F350 with a 5.4 and 4R100 I bought from an auction. It makes a whining noise when I hit the gas. I replaced the PVC, and that did not fix it. I think it is coming from the front pump. I replaced the trans filter and it’s still there. Can you take a look at this short video and tell me if this sounds to you like a front pump whine? ruclips.net/video/KbWTmEMuOZM/видео.html
Thanks, JCarGuy. Watched your video a few times and the noise seems to vary with RPM and sounds vaguely like pump whine so can't rule it out. But it's hard to say definitively from that video alone but if it's coming from the back of the engine, it's likely to be TC or pump. Put a pressure gauge on the transmission and see what it does at idle and at 1000RPMs or so when in Park or Neutral. If the pump's going out, it should be evident on the gauge (erratic pressure readings or low pressure). If pressures are normal, then it could still be pump but something else as well.
Love your tip & trick on pump alignment I think it’s better than using clamp style tool

Thanks for the kind words, Brian!
Yes, you are correct - that kit is for the 4R100 diesel applications only.
This is the difficult way I know a guy who will sell you alignment pins to install this without having to align in the case
Hi Caleb, yep agree...Ive since had my machinist make some pins for me but didnt have them when i filmed that video series.
Thank you for watching!

I recognize the blue gel but what is that black grease you're using when installing the seals at the end?
It's actually very dark green and is made by the same company and sold on Amazon as a pair with the blue tubs.
My pump bushings and Coast drum/Od drum were super tight. Have you run into this?
Yes, it happens occasionally. Use 400-800 grit sandpaper to clearance bushings as needed.
@@nickstransmissions I used an engine hone and got it fitting snug. Great videos very informative
Awesome...good work, Joe

Is a new oil pump required when rebuilding a 4r100?
