I’ll never forget the day I was driving down an Austrian mountain pass in 1997 when a 355 came around a corner going up in full drift, smoke peeling off the tires and a smile on the drivers face that sticks with me to this day.
If you want to avoid the engine out for MOST things, get a 360. If you want to avoid it altogether, get a 430. I went with the 430 not just because it was the Ferrari V8 that came out when I got my license so it was a “poster car” for me, but also because you can pretty easily work on it yourself… which saves you a metric fuckton of money. You can also do a manual swap yourself for $10k if you want a gated manual without paying the premium for the stock ones. But a lot of the feeling of the 355 is still present in the 430… the interior is “far away” and spacious, it all feels light and delicate, it “dances” on the road… If you don’t mind the engine out maintenance, go for the 355. If you want things slightly more modern and reliable, 360. And even more so? 430.
I absolutely agree with you regarding the 430. I have one. An 07 F1 Spider. Modern enough, but still organic. I didn’t want a 458 because it is overly computerized, almost feeling like an arcade game, and the 355, although stunning, is a maintenance nightmare. Also, the interior is lacking, comparatively speaking. The 430 , for me, really hits the sweet spot. Two issues to contend with; 1) I live on Vancouver Island, and there are no certified Ferrari technicians. 2) my 430 is dark grey in colour, so not too flashy, however, some people look at me in a negative light. Conversely, I also have a Porsche 993, and virtually every time I drive it, people have their cameras out, and give me the thumbs up. 19:52

I had just bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for the same price in August, and was like, "I could have bought my dream car instead!" I'd still take a 355 GTS over any currently made exotic sports car. That 5 valve per cylinder v8 + proper manual gearbox = bliss! Loved seeing you guys drive this all over my usual cruising roads... a glimpse at an alternate timeline that could have been. 😁🥰
I have a 348TS with a Tubi exhaust and it’s the best driving (deafening) experience of all time. Can’t believe I own it honestly. The 348 steering is heavy until you’re moving, and then has that typical Ferrari lightness with lovely feel. It also smells incredible, transports me back to being in a workshop with my dad every time I sit in it. Honestly these things are magic, delicate, dramatic, small, complete timewarp. The GMC Syclone bested the 348 during the Motor Trend testing in 1991, that was also a significant influence for Ferrari to go back to the drawing board.
I think you meant Car and Driver. It was the September 1991 Cover Story and probably their most infamous issue. I hate being "that guy" but I couldn't help myself lol.
Funny how impactful that was, now you have a cybertruck stomping on today's sports cars in drag races. The bottom line - nobody wants to be driving a Syclone vs a 348. The 348 is far better experience. Just about everything pre-2020 is going to seem slow. So now if you look at a more modern "classic" it's about having a manual transmission, something that sounds good, feels quick-ish but not criminally fast - in my opinion the 348's, 355's, and 360's are the best options for that.

Such a beautiful car. Timeless to people of my generation (I’m 40). The 355 had electronically controlled damper controls in the late 90s!! Not to mention redlining at 8500 again in the late 90s!! And that gated shifter… the clinks when shifting gears!!!
F355 will go down in history as the absolute sweet spot in the V8 lineup. The 355 engine might be one of the most special ever put into a street Ferrari aside from F50. It along with F50 still remains the only 5 valve, titanium rods, titanium valves, nikasil coated cylinder engines outside of Formula One of the time. The level of special is very very high and the small service fees definitely worth what you get from that engine.
This one is aging so well, i actually think it looks better today than back in the day when it was new! I actually never liked it as a teenager but now 20 years later i love it! One of the most beautiful Ferrari ever actually.

Na, they've definitely eased up with that shite. They revoked the ban on Chris Harris for calling them out for handin out tuned up n dialled-in cars for press reviews while standard cars were less performing. They had him banned for over half a decade n even went on to warn dealers n high profile owners against loaning him one. They turned all of that around by handing him the 458 Speciale to pit it head to head against the 991 GT3 RS (something they mostly are against doin), the F12 TDF, the LaFerrari n the FXXK. They understand that their old stubborn ways ain't good for business.
As a valet parker in Newport Beach I got to drive one when they first came out and was amazed at how simple and user-friendly it was. The NSX was the only other car of the era that matched performance with easy-to-drive qualities. Love it!
I purchased a 1995 355 with gated manual in red on tan about 6 months ago and this review is spot on. Fantastic job. Crazy how much they are worth now, but totally worth the price of admission. I have a GT4RS and its hard to determine which sounds better, but i think this takes the cake.
The power of the 355 isn't the actual horsepower but the theatre of it all! I'm in the lunch room eating and I've had a couple of people pop their heads in to ask if I'm watching old F1. This car is drama on wheels. I'm lucky enough to have driven one and hearing these noises and knowing the sensation that James' is feeling brings me right back!! Great job TH!
The styling is SO GOOD. The 308/328 was such a sexy, light design, I feel like the 355 looks like that same design if it went to the gym and then showed up in a tight fit t-shirt. Still sexy but it's as if the shirt couldn't hold any more, it's full. They have real presence in person, and I agree, it's the first "modern" Ferrari. Nice.
Asides from the engine-out service that you should do every 3-5 years, depending on how many miles you drive it, repairs can be a pain. The problem is that when parts need to be replaced, good luck finding them. You'll have to buy used ones and hope that they're not also defective. If you're willing to put all that aside, this is one of the most glorious classic Ferraris to drive, especially with a gated shifter and a Capristo exhaust with high-flow cats. The looks, the sound, the shifting, even the leather all make you feel like you're in something really special. Thanks for the great review!
This has been my dream car for a long time. The looks, the engine sound, & fun-to-drive factor make it a very desirable Ferrari to own. I've been hearing that you need to have a deep pocket to keep this car running...this is beyond the reach for a common man.
The intro was indeed quite funny I agree with the other comments but what i’m not seeing enough of is appreciation to the whole throttle house team on how good they shoot and edit these videos. I feel like I’m in person experiencing the car with them the way they edit all of the shots in, from the back so we can hear the exhaust, the climbing rpms on the gauge, Thomas pushing the clutch in and grabbing another gear, it’s all extremely well shot and made. I never fully realized it until this video since I’ve been watching a lot of extra throttle house non sports car reviews from them recently, but this video is extremely well made. Thomas and James’ reactions to the car and driving experience really put it all over the top and you can tell when they are genuinely enjoying a really special car. Great video as always and can’t believe I’ve been watching you guys this long and just now understood all of the other hard work going on behind the scenes to give us the realest experience and review of a car without ever seeing it in person. Thanks again guys and keep it up I love watching all of the videos
You guys are the amongst the top 3 quality car review channels. Keep up the good work! Lot of normie youtube videos are coming out on every car release lately without any substance. Don’t do that, continue with this good work! Hope your team grows!!! ❤
The engine out is blown way out of proportion. It comes out quite quickly in one big assembly together with the whole rear sub-frame, suspension, etc. It was made to come out easy it just looks dramatic with the car cut in half but when you commit to the process it is not a big deal.
The old guy that works on my Fiat 124 had a 355 in for a belt service when I picked my car up. Asked him how much it was going to be. Over $5k. My total bill for a brake system rebuild, fuel injection rail replacement, head gasket replacement, alignment, and a handful of electrical gremlins: $2k. And this was an independent Italian specialist mechanic. Can’t imagine what a dealer would be.
I’ve never had the pleasure of really hearing a gated shifter before. Lyrical. Also, enjoyed the description of shifting like holding a wine glass. Brilliant. Something’s been lost with putting automatics in cars that are begging to be driven.
The first Ferrari I drove was a 355 F1 back in 1999. A few years later, had a F355 Spider (manual) as a company car in 2005. These are just wonderful to drive, and look far better than modern Ferrari models!
Would love to see you guys do a video on a F430 with a manual conversion. That seems to be the best value in Ferrari's right now. Cars with the F1 gearbox are in the low 100's and conversion kits are $10k.
For those that dreamed about this car when they were in high school in the 90s, and now in their 40s, this is the bomb. This is the ultimate Ferrari and sports car. Anytime u see it in real life in the street is like seeing the GOAT of cars even back in those days. The same aura as a McLaren F1. Thanks for reviewing it but I sense u by guys struggle abit to understand the magnitude of the F355 legend.
That sound…from 7-8500 rpm…that styling…god…I’ve wanted one of these since i was a child. I played a f355 challenge arcade game as a kid and fell in love. I want the car and the game as soon as life allows it. Issues and all I don’t care I have to have one
Great intro! And for all the people that don't seem to get it, why are you watching a channel that opens most videos, with a joke!?! I was very proud when my engine came out. Like the saying goes: As long as it's healthy...
I'm not particularly a Ferrari guy, and I'd probably never buy one, even if I could afford one. But I'm totally in love with the sound they make. It's absolutely glorious.
I really don't know how all the manufacturers are completely missing the point that their older cars designed for drivers are skyrocketing in value. Car people want a car to drive, they aren't interested in automatic transmissions or television screens.
Yes, the 355 is a classic Ferrari. It's a total shame the upkeep is so crippling. They were coming down nicely in price due to the nightmare maintenance cost.. but of course now that everyone is searching for manual vehicles, this has shot back up in price. There are a number of things I would change to make it look a little more appealing but again, that's personal taste. I still think the bargain to get would be the F430 in manual. Hopefully the world keeps ignoring this model so prices start to drop to more reasonable levels.. 🙂
unfortunately, I don't think any manual sports car from a legacy brand will ever go down in price; in an automatic EV future, these cars will go only up.
The difference is in the 1995 (first year) cars and all the others. You can tell because they have 2 MAF sensors. Those are indeed OBD1 cars and are considered the best and fastest versions. It is not so much a European and Rest of World (ROW) thing.
The '95 US cars have the motronic 2.7 as well, with 2 mafs and the extra power. The only difference row cars had was slightly lighter bumpers and doors, and no airbags, maybe 100lbs lighter total, if that. Not a big difference. They all went to motronic 5.2 (single maf, obd2) and airbags in '96.
I’ve always loved the way these look. I loved the early Ferraris, 308, 328, 348, but these seem like the ultimate expression of that style. They just look perfect. Too bad they have that insanely expensive maintenance.
this video has been in my to be watched list for so long - did not want to see it because i didn't want to be dissapointed. but what a rendition. classic.
That intro. Just as I was gonna cringe, in comes the whole point behind the plot. You boys killed me with that joke 🤣☠️ The car, though...There are a million reasons I can name to explain why this was THE Ferrari of the 90's, and why it still slaps to this day. But a million is too many. The F355 shall speak for itself. 💯

If you're willing to put all that aside, this is one of the most glorious classic Ferraris to drive, especially with a gated shifter and a Capristo exhaust with high-flow cats. The looks, the sound, the shifting, even the leather all make you feel like you're in something really special. Thanks for the great review!
This is one of the coolest Ferrari they ever made
It depends on personal taste. Testarossa, 288, F40, F50, Enzo, 360, 430 and others are also cool
This has been my dream car for a long time. The looks, the engine sound, & fun-to-drive factor make it a very desirable Ferrari to own. I've been hearing that you need to have a deep pocket to keep this car running...this is beyond the reach for a common man.
Good lord that sound is magnificent.
Sounds better than ice spice
@@jaughnekowwtf is that? Sounds like a gay latte
@@deeem2628 you do not wanna know who that is lol
Really I think the mufflers need to go bye bye
Kinda sounds like a glorified 4 banger
This is the only Ferrari I'd ever want to own. The looks are astonishing.
Everytime a straight pipes review pops up it’s a quick reminder of how much better you guys are at what you do.
Oof. You didn't have to do 'em like that. I mean, I agree. But still...
Why does Thomas point so aggressively at "You're watching Throttle House." 😭
Ok ill watch just don't hurt me 😭
It's like Samuel L Jackson telling us, "YOU motherfuckers are watching THROTTLE HOUSE."
It's the perfect counterpoint to the goofy shit eating grin James does every time.
The cooler sounding the car, the more intense the point. Science.
He's pointing at you, Larry!
Can we just take a minute and give some respect to the camerawork of this video. Just amazing.
You guys are the amongst the top 3 quality car review channels. Keep up the good work!
Lot of normie youtube videos are coming out on every car release lately without any substance. Don’t do that, continue with this good work! Hope your team grows!!! ❤
As a guy who gets joy out of driving his f150, I totally get where these guys are coming from.
Now that is a proper V8 noise with some octaves! Bellissima!
That centre-mounted prancing horse on the rear is straight fire
Until you hear it in person you just won't understand. Best sounding car ever.
Brilliant. Something’s been lost with putting automatics in cars that are begging to be driven.
every episode that comes out i think "surely they cant out do this intro" and every video im proved wrong, hilarious intro 😂😂
The first Ferrari I drove was a 355 F1 back in 1999. A few years later, had a F355 Spider (manual) as a company car in 2005. These are just wonderful to drive, and look far better than modern Ferrari models!
It needs a Tubi exhaust system.
Dang i miss my 355GTS.
I remember when you could get them for 50Ks
Best start to a Ferrari video Ever!
I saw the punchline of the intro coming from miles away, and it still made me snort 🤣
Wouldn’t say I’m a Ferrari fan, but the F355 is a stunning piece of design.
Old is Gold 🔥🏎️
💯
Sounds Is Like familiar.
Oh yes I remember about xham**** 😂
Would love to see you guys do a video on a F430 with a manual conversion. That seems to be the best value in Ferrari's right now. Cars with the F1 gearbox are in the low 100's and conversion kits are $10k.
Best intro 😂 “what’re we celebrating for?“
“I dunno!”
WHO COMES UP WITH THESE ENDLESSLY ENTERTAINING INTROS? IS THERE NO END? HOW?
That sound…from 7-8500 rpm…that styling…god…I’ve wanted one of these since i was a child. I played a f355 challenge arcade game as a kid and fell in love. I want the car and the game as soon as life allows it. Issues and all I don’t care
I have to have one
Great intro! And for all the people that don't seem to get it, why are you watching a channel that opens most videos, with a joke!?! I was very proud when my engine came out. Like the saying goes: As long as it's healthy...
Thank you gents for an awesome birthday present! Proly my fave episode everest!
Okay, that intro joke was pretty funny 😆
I'm not particularly a Ferrari guy, and I'd probably never buy one, even if I could afford one. But I'm totally in love with the sound they make. It's absolutely glorious.
I really don't know how all the manufacturers are completely missing the point that their older cars designed for drivers are skyrocketing in value. Car people want a car to drive, they aren't interested in automatic transmissions or television screens.
Aerodynamics, evolution, safety regs.
Fuel economy/hybridization.
List goes on.
They do understand, thats why companies like porsche and aston release bare bones manual cars and charge extra
@@zXPeterz14
Most manufacturers don't even offer them. The remaining manual Porsches are less than the PDK versions of the same car.
Probably my favorite looking mid engined car of all time.
And the 430 isn’t a nightmare to maintain.
Yep F430 also doesn't need engine out service 👍
unfortunately, I don't think any manual sports car from a legacy brand will ever go down in price; in an automatic EV future, these cars will go only up.
@@franciscodanconia4324 well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It’s a tiny bit friendlier to service. Still difficult. 😉
@@jdsk8914 true, but it’s still a little tricky to service. Provided you’re doing the service yourself and not paying for someone to do it.
Great review guys. Reminder for all of us how and where we came from re: modern supercars.
That intro was awesome!
Pop-up headlights and manual transmission, very nice! Now that's a real sportscar!
A curiosity, the 355 Europeans made in the first year, have more hp and less weight! They are much faster than the following ones! Love the 355
I dont know but could it be going from OBD1 to OBD2?
A manual F355 is peak Ferrari for me. Just wonderful. I've owned one for the last 16 years. I can't be without it.
Probably going to step out in an unpopular limb, but I've always liked the 360.
The 360 is awesome. Much better car than the 355 but most people feel the 355 is prettier
@facetiousmonkey5322 maybe just because the 360 dropped when I was getting my license or something, but I like the 360's looks as well.
Yeah the 360 was the first "modern" Ferrari
I always thought the 360 looked kinda beady eyed since they went away from pop ups. The pop ups on 355 were smoother imo
Same.
I’ve always loved the way these look. I loved the early Ferraris, 308, 328, 348, but these seem like the ultimate expression of that style. They just look perfect. Too bad they have that insanely expensive maintenance.
If you're spending $100k on a Ferrari you might as well throw in a few extra grand for a 2 post lift
Thank you for the comment at the end, about it taking bravery to come out. It warmed my heart
You guys are getting a thumbs up for the intro alone
this video has been in my to be watched list for so long - did not want to see it because i didn't want to be dissapointed. but what a rendition. classic.
That intro. Just as I was gonna cringe, in comes the whole point behind the plot. You boys killed me with that joke 🤣☠️
The car, though...There are a million reasons I can name to explain why this was THE Ferrari of the 90's, and why it still slaps to this day. But a million is too many. The F355 shall speak for itself. 💯
Hi Throttle House Team,🤗
I just wanted to say a big thank you for all the amazing content you’ve been delivering to us non-stop! It’s been incredible, and we’ve been glued to our seats with premium entertainment.
I got a car here in Winnipeg, MB, that I believe would make a great review video. If you could find the time to squeeze it in in your busy schedule, I’d love to see it! It's the Jaguar XJ portfolio 2012 model with a 5.0-liter V8 in Azurite Blue.
I just love the amazing videos you've been putting out here. They're so entertaining, informative, and most of all, lots of fun to watch!❣
Hilarious intro!!! June is the best month!! My birthday and pride!!! Great video guys… as always!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yellow is the best color for this car... chef's kiss perfection. This and the F40 are the only two Ferrari's I actually want.
Great video guys, and loved the intro, but you better call the wah-mbulance - those cis het bro boys can’t take a joke. 😂
7 extra gold star points for the Jamiroquai reference. Honestly, not sure why these haven't crazy skyrocketed like 911s. Thanks for the vid guys.
Enzo would have been pissed if he saw that intro 😭😂🙏
This intro always puts a smile on my face.

Best car in existence. My brother in law also had a berlinetta when I was a kid. I got to drive it to my year 10 formal. I've had 100+ cars ( I'll never be lucky enough to own an f355 though) but man if I won the lottery that'd be my first purchase.
