I never saw dutch as a villain, but someone who wanted what was best for his family, but it got harder and harder to make the right choices, and it all got to him in the end
I agree. It was Micah who corrupted him to be like that and when *(spoiler alert)* Hosea died, and Dutch stopped listening to Authur, there was no-one to calm him down.
Lore Lord I saw him the same way right up until he left Arthur to die. How can he be all about fighting for what's best for his family if the person who's always been the most loyal and been their the longest is expendable.
@@BerserkerJay237 He was driven crazy I think. Micah did it, and that head injury, and all the deaths that happened, and a lot of other shit too. Poor guy went through a lot, and he was being blamed for it all too.
He was a good man who truly cared about his family. He went crazy, it's not his fault. It was a combination of stress and Rattlesnake Micah's manipulation and Madlad Hosea's death.
Dutch loved everyone in the gang like a family and he was just trying to do his best to keep them save but when everyone started dying he started to feel huge guilt about it mostly about the deads of Hosea,Lenny and maybe Sean since both of them were very young. And I truly think he loved Arthur like a son I got to experience both ending (helping John get to safety and going back for the money) and in both of them Dutch leaves and I think I know the reason: I think it’s because he didn’t wanted to witness Arthur’s final moments you can see the sad expression on his face because he knew that even if he killed Micha right then and there he can’t do nothing to prevent Arthur’s death. Also at the going back for the money ending you can see the deadly look he gives to Micha while clutching his teeth out of anger.
Imagine the sadness, nightmares and guilt Dutch must’ve went through about Arthur’s death and him realizing that the gang’s disbanding is partially his fault!
Riding out to the Braithwaite Manor & standing shoulder to shoulder with the gang makes me feel like a real wild west outlaw. The game needed more of this.
It's just sad to see Dutch go crazy and descend into madness. The person he was in the first half of RDR2 is not the same person as the one in the latter half or the one in RDR1. He became a cold blooded killer because of circumstances.
There was something special about Dutch in RDR 2. He always seemed untouchable and unmatchable, even in the toughest situations. Arthur, John, Javier, Bill, Micah… all seemed to get into trouble eventually but Dutch was always the slickest and toughest badass in the gang. It makes sense that all of the members would have died for him, if it wasn’t for his growing insanity
In my personal opinion and experience in this game I personally thought that during the mission when they robbed the bank in saint denis and the train car crashed, I noticed that Dutch hit his head pretty hard that's when I started to notice that he wasn't alright mentally from that point forward. And it was tough watching Dutch slowly decline mentally to the point where he couldn't tell what kind of destruction he was causing to the gang...RDR2 was an emotional roller coaster but I'm glad I was there for ride playing as one of the best pro antagonists ever in video game history Arthur Morgan.
More like because Micah played him like a fool which wasn't to hard given the situation all it took was him having a yes man again all a guy like dutch needed someone to tell him all his plan will work
It's true.. Times had changed for him and his gang.. Dutch thought he could change that, he thought he was big enough to do so, but he wasn't. He realized how small he truly was
I think dutch is one of those characters you get close to and learn to love and then when you have to hate him it rips you apart! We all know how things turn out for him in rdr1 and maybe some went into rdr2 hating him already but when you see him interacting with the gang and throughout much of rdr2 many people including myself really liked him! But as time goes on you see his mentality start to really crumble for many reasons, the gang was falling apart with many deaths like most notably hosea which really hit Dutch hard cause he really starts to get paranoid after that, Micah started to really start to manipulate dutch after that cause instead of letting Arthur get closer to him to be his guiding voice and the voice of some sort of reason like hosea but instead he let Micah start to control him. But I think what really was Dutch’s biggest downfall was himself, he was an old world outlaw trying to fight against the world that was changing fast and seeing he had no place in it and really no one close to him anymore that he could truly rely on that’s when he finally just broke. Like at the end of the game when Arthur hits him with that line “I gave you all I had….” I think that’s when dutch realized that he really lost everything, sure he had tons of money but he lost all the people that loved him and looked up to him especially Arthur who was the closest thing he had towards a son maybe even more so than John. That’s why at the end of the prologue when Dutch chooses to kill Micah instead of John I think that’s right before we see dutch transform into what he was in rdr1 a truly alone person that was only surviving off the chaos he creates
Dutch wasn't a evil man Micah's lies blinded him to think that everyone was against him and Hosea's death pushed him over the edge it's truly heartbreaking to see his mental decline throughout the game
Dutch never turned evil, after Saint Dennis, Hosea dying, his obvious head injury in the trolley crash it changed him. Micah saw a chance and took it and ruined a good man and a strong family
*I HAVE A PLAN* *WE JUST NEED MORE MONEY!* *have faith , arthur* *DOES THIS THING GO TO TAHITI?!* *we’ll make a living outta that* *just wait , arthur* *MICAH , BILL come with me!*
I never really saw dutch as the antagonist, more like an anti hero. He is no doubt the best character arch in video game history. The fact that I could look at the ending scene (when he's looking down at Arthur) and see it as he's genually sad, and you could see it completely different is brilliant!
Dutch hit his head on the tram and showed some signs (Bronte) of insanity. But when Hosea died, Dutch struggled to deal with his best friend's death. He couldn't show grief to the gang and that got to him. Micah took advantage of this and when he found out that Arthur got TB, he was scared of losing him. Micah was clever and saw everything. Dutch realised that Micah was the rat but at that moment, his insanity presses on his brain and he ran.
I guessed Micah was going to betray at some stage in the first mission on the way to that shack in the snowstorm. He was unpredictable. I had faith in dutch for the whole thing, even at the end, despite all the doubt. I guess a lot like Arthur. Such an amazing game with a great story.
I see Dutch as a man who through all the death and bloodshed went and tried his best but without Hosea he couldn’t keep the gang together EVERYONE in this comment section knows that Micah Bell was the downfall of the best cast of characters to ever be produced in a video game
The moment I saw the last act I know I'm going to hear Arthur's say "I gave you all I had" and I was trying to skip it but I cracked up again when I hear that
I really think it was the trolley accident that caused him to lose his mind completely, and the death of Hosea. I mean Hosea kept everything in check, after he was gone you knew it was gonna be bad. But he I think he suffered some sort of brain injury on that trolley and with everyone always in his ear asking him "WHAT'RE WE GONNA DO, DUTCH?!" and of course Micah telling him everyone is betraying him when he's the one doing just that. So much coulda been avoided ... wish there was some alternate ending or game even where Strauss and Micah were never in the gang.
The mission where you have to go to braithewait Manor was so badass. The whole gang banded together and stormed them. That bank heist in saint Denis was awful.
