As @RivianTrackr wrote on his X post: Rivian has confirmed with me that at this time only entertainment apps can be cast while in Park. Rivian will work with Google to enable more apps and eventually audio-only apps while driving.
This is such a great idea. Way better than waiting for the manufacturer to add different apps. There are already a ton of apps (and even websites) that allow you to cast video. I think this will come to other manufacturers at some point.
This is the perfect approach. Just don’t allow the third parties to gain access to Rivian customers’ data. Keep it all internal but allow users to access all their apps and other phone functionality through the Rivian entertainment system. Now just needs Airplay.
Why waste time building mediocre apps when you can just cast from your phone!
Can't wait to cast OutOfSpecPodcast on my R1T screen.
Google Maps already has a "Send to your Rivian" button when you want to share from Google Maps. Not sure if this is common knowledge.
I believe this works with Tesla too. its the "share" function in Maps
Same with Hyundai. You can share from Google Maps to Hyundai Bluelink, and it'll automatically load in the car's nav system.
Yeah, I do this with my Tesla as well. It’s handy.
This is a great idea. First steps of a working relationship
This is huge! I was just hoping they would add RUclips and a browser. Never thought about Comecast. Hope this comes soon! Great podcast 👏
Rear display???? Didn't see them say that. Can you confirm?
Didn’t Rivian buy ABRP?
I like that Rivian is providing things that customers may like.
I sure hope we are able to cast to the rear screen while driving. My grand kids would be very happy!
Rivian here to stay
Maybe. Stock is still in the dumpster. They may or may not survive.
Cool, seems like Android Auto should be a snap too!
I would love if I had Google Cast in my Tesla.
Was hoping Rivian to include Google automotive, hopefully on R2 for European market 😊❤❤. Great work with podcast Francie
Not the first time. I was able to screen/audio share from my Samsung galaxy to my 2018 BMW 530e.
They gave us a tiny taste of this with the Gary video in the gearguard folder and I was blown away by the quality of the sound and screen. I think owners are going to be REALLY impressed when they watch something for the first time.
Finally, it's a great start. I've put in numerous feedback to Rivian in moving to Google maps as mapbox is still not up to par. I'm getting stoked 😃
Definitely this has to be the next step
I have you tube music on my phone. It works on Rivians now but it would be nice if it was bettter integrated. It has no video just audio. I have my own music files plus audo pod casts
nice video, ty
Does this mean the Apple - Rivian news is probably not happening?
I thought I heard that Apple and Rivian were doing some kind of relationship? Wasn't this announce this same week 😮😮
Leeeets Not get too excited... casting video will NOT be allowed during driving! And sound needs a dedicated streaming device (i.e. your cellphone) Also, from a tech standpoint, Chromecast is WiFi based (instead of wired) so you are using up a source.
19:00 Jose, yeah, pat yourself on the back!! We own an R1T and Ioniq 6.
Get apple CarPlay and I’ll get excited. Still hate that I don’t have that. Makes working on the road unnecessarily harder without it.
I love my native Apps through android automotive on my polestar. The fact is I occasionally forget my phone. I like having things not tied to my phone. I don’t even like using PAK in case I lose my phone.
I was excited for the apple rumors but this is better tbh; no need to bog down the software team with native app updates, Shows cooperation with big tech, potential for maps/waze integration?
Need to see it being applied first.
Doesn't Rivian own ABRP?
I would prefer they just run a version of Android OS, but being able to “cast” is pretty cool.
Obviously either Google or Apple could make a major investment in Rivian to assure it's future with a major investment or outright purchase of Rivian. I was surprised that in your podcast you seemed to miss that this could be a play by Rivian to show that they are aligned with Google instead of Apple. Both Apple and Google have invested in autonomous driving (along with GM, Tesla and Amazon) but neither of these companies currently have own a substantial part of an auto manufacturer. Google actually is moving forward with autonomous driving fleet while Apple dropped the ball. So maybe this is more than just integrating Chromecast into the Rivian but an indication that Google will financially back Rivian? Rivian could certainly could use the financial backing and with a 10.15 billion market cap either Google, Apple or Amazon could fully own Rivian if they wanted to (Amazon is already owns 16% of the company).
This announcement/partnership might also just mean Google cast and RUclips...
Meanwhile me seen this in RUclips in a Tesla while charging in a Tesla Supercharger 😂…..Rivian what?
If they do it it will probably start happening with all manufacturers and rightfully so it's probably a simple thing to.
Someone said this is huge. I think that is yet to be seen. Does this even work with non-Google Apps on an Apple device? It is an honest question as I am an iPhone user who Airplays content to my Samsung TV. Would this work with Safari? My personal opinion is that this could be clunky if not executed well. On a more optimistic note, this feature is lacking in Tesla. Sometimes I want to watch something other than Netflix or RUclips while charging.
You can definitely use Chromecast on an iPhone to cast content as it stands today. It would basically be the same underlying tech with Google Cast. So it should work seamlessly as it does today with Chromecast.
France, youtube and Disney + are already available and running on the Fisker Ocean in Hollywood mode. So I think Jose needs some schooling about the Rivian being first.
He was referring to Google Cast being a first, which it is. You can't cast for any automotive experience yet. At least I for one do not know it exists elsewhere. So he's correct in saying it's a first.
If I can't mirror my iphone to play apple arcade with a controller by R3, I'm going to be pretty assblasted about it.
Soooo , Android only ? Ok... I think we are making a big deal out of a small wifi casting capability from a big name
Please give us Google maps.
Or CarPlay/AA.
Honestly anything but Mapbox.
The whole Rivian UX/UI is built on Android with a Rivian skin on it (think Amazon Fire tablet) I would want a native RUclips music app, we don't really need Chromecast in a car - it's gimmicky at best. The Maps work fine, switching to google maps would be great. Give us the android auto messaging functionality and I would be fine as is.
I am steadfastly opposed to introducing AI into the fold. Self driving should be left to a track. WE should understand that a juvenile monster is cute and down the road….
But why?
This seems like Google, yet again, is muddying the waters of its own offerings. They already have AAOS, and of course Android Auto, and now this?
Chromecast existed before all of those lol
@@chidorirasenganz right, but I'm talking about what they offer in an automotive setting.
@@nbvolks I think it makes sense because there are 3 levels of integration. Simply casting content, taking over the display and being the OS from the ground up
@@chidorirasenganz right, which goes back to my original comment that this muddies the waters of Google's automotive offerings. You might see it as tiered offerings, but it creates user confusion (do I cast?, do I connect AA?, is the app natively available?, or some combination of the above with varied user experience and quality?). On the Google side it means, yet again, Google has separate non-integrated, teams working on projects that are essentially geared toward the same purpose; Google as an automotive user experience. This is what Google does far too often with most of its product offerings, and the net result is user confusion and a "lesser" product. Need we talk about how many different messaging products they've gone through? The clusterf*&k that currently is Gemini vs Google Assistant? Or even things as simple as not properly integrating routines with Wear OS and AAOS? And the list goes on.
Look, I'm a Google user, for sure. (multiple Pixel phones, home heavily integrated with Google Home, our Polestar 2 runs nearest the "pure" concept of AAOS, etc..) They can do things really well, but they're also their own worst enemy and have shot themselves in the foot far too many times, and needlessly so.
I doubt the Cast is going to be for more than streaming video/audio apps, not all apps. First of all, the native app will have to support Google Cast, which all video/audio apps do not.
Pump the brakes and don't spread rumors Jose. We need more info before we claim it's going to support/cast "all apps" like Waze, Google Maps, ABRP, etc.
Certainly good for Rivian but Google? I can see them wanting to play on the software side but they are far behind Tesla in terms of an integrated solution to provide infotainment and run the vehicle. The best instance of Google hardware is Pixel. They have slightly less than 3% of the North American smartphone market after a very serious effort in the last few years. With Rivian having many scale level production issues and very poor financial performance (currently losing $38,000 on each sold vehicle). Frankly, I'd like to see Google invest heavily in Rivian and allow them to follow the Tesla model in building BEV's for a profit. The BIG question is does Google want to get into a traditionally low margin hardware market and be satisfied by being 2nd to Tesla as perhaps the best case scenario? My guess is they lack interest and the will to tackle that challenge with Rivian ...
No way. Gugle controlling anything at Rivian would be disastrous.
Rivian once again proving why they will one day be bigger than Tesla…they know how to establish huge partnerships. Amazon, google and apple on the way…all while Elons trying to do everything internally and slowly ruining the company
Lol, you’ve got to be kidding me. I’m a huge Rivian fan but you’re just delusional. Rivian is just struggling to survive and only makes vehicles. No AI in-house and no AI partnership would remotely come close to Tesla ever. Not to even mention all the other associated lines of businesses that Tesla has plus all the vertical integration. Wow, didn’t know there was this level of delusion in parts of the Rivian fan base.
LOL. They are out of money while losing $102,000 per vehicle sold
Less than 2 years of money and more than 2 years before the R2 production would start
Tesla is a software and energy company, not a car company….people just can’t seem to grasp this. Rivian has a lonnnngggg way to go to catch up. But I am rooting for them!
@@dtiff haha they can claim that all they want. It’s just Elon talked out his behind as usual. They are a car manufacturer which he wants to claim is a software and energy company because he doesn’t think being the ceo of a car manufacturer is cool enough.
They don’t compete with Google and Apple of software and Rivian had incredible software already as well. They have almost caught up to Tesla on their internal software but add in Apple and Google help and Tesla will look like a joke compared to Rivian by 2030.
@@olemissjim yeah your numbers are not correct at all haha it’s closer to low $40k per vehicle and that was on their production prior to the production pause to update their factory which updates are expected to make them near profitable on each vehicle and once they gain scale of production turn profit per vehicle.
They are also losing less money than Tesla was 2 years into delivering their first cars. So technically they are in a better position than Tesla was. tesla lost money for 14 years post first deliveries. Rivian is 2 years post first deliveries and on track to be profitable in the next 2 years. So 10 years faster then Tesla turned a profit
It’s also less than 2 years until R2. Since the announcement they adjusted the plans on where it will be produced to change the deliveries from mid to late 2026 to early 2026 so it’s about a year and a half away
Not much of a riveting rivian story id imagine.. stock down 10 percent
casting sucks because you need to use your phones data. the app integrations is the killer feature here
Who cares? Everyone has unlimited data these days because the unlimited plans are so cheap.
Well, in this case not your phone's data, but your car's hotspot to cast.
Sounds like francoe and jose really hit it off. Are they bkth single? Should be out of soec match maker channel!!
Let's not be awkward.
Oof. That's a horrible idea. Rivian are already shit, so adding google's crappy AI is not going to end well. Have you tried using a google search lately? It's terrible now, can't find specific sites anymore. And I can't make enough jokes about rivian, those posers. A pickup that can't even haul a big trailer, and only pulls a small one about 80 miles before the battery dies? At least the ladies won't have to park in the garage all by themselves anymore... bwahahahaa!! No self-respecting man would ever drive that hunk of junk.
Oh Goody. Vehicles going down the road while their drivers watch videos. Why can't people just drive the damn vehicles without endangering others.
Hey, I prefer the bigger screen instead of looking down at my phone. 😏
Casting does not work while in Drive.
Don't be a moron. These can only be played while in park, genius.
@@TheBowerbird 😂😂
@@TheBowerbird Biteme.
Google? Truck has a Woke-AI option?
Oh RUclips comments has an inbred option I see
@riviantrackr it's not really "first of its kind" I'm pretty sure cars running Android Automotive OS (not android auto) like Polestar and volvo have the play store and access to a RUclips native app
Per Rivian and Google, the tech for casting has never been used like this in any vehicle. Yes Polestar and Volvo have native RUclips apps but they don't cast.
He's talking about casting to it.
This is excellent!
