  • I just loved watching this guy play. Matt Burke was the complete package. He could join the line from fullback, was a good tactical kicker and was renowned for his accuracy when kicking for goal.
He was instrumental in the Wallabies' success between 1998 and 2003 and will go down in history as arguably the greatest Wallaby fullback ever.
    Enjoy and thanks for watching!

We were blessed with fullbacks for a while there. Roger Gould, David Campese, Glen Ella, Marty Roebuck, Matt Pini, Matt Burke, Stephen Larkham, Joe Roff, Chris Latham, Mat Rogers; a lot of raw talent in those blokes.

I was always more of a fan of Latham, but Burkie was always solid and had more than a few moments of genius.

Ah I remember the days when the Wallabies could hold the ball, run with the ball and score great tries.

Miss the class of Aussie players from that era. Speaking as an Englishman.

Matt Burke was indeed a quality player. I like watching rugby from this era, late 80s and 90s, much better than the rugby today. The game has changed so much, and I don't think for the better. Though I will say that in recent years there seems to be an emerging remembering of the importance of skill and ability over beefy, gym-rat, robot types.

I tend to agree. Watching the footage from the mid-to-late 90's showed how much faster and more skilful the game seemed to be. Modern forward play is marvellous but I feel like backline play has gone backwards.

He popped his shoulder big time scoring the winning try at 3:10...
He still somehow managed to stage a comeback for the 1999 rwc the following year kicking vital points for aus in that campaign

For my money probably Australia's best full back of the 90s and early 2000s. While other fullbacks had great attacking skills, Burke was much better defensively. The fact that only one try was scored against Australia during the 1999 World Cup was at least partly connected to this. Plus he still holds the record for most individual points scored against NZ in a single game. Definitely the complete package.

He gave a masterclass against the Barbarians at Twickenham towards the end of his career. It's a pity none of his tries from that game was on this reel.
