  • Percy Montgomery is one of those players who divides opinion. When he was good, he was brilliant and when he had an off day, people demanded his head.
    Love him or hate him, the fact remains he is the greatest point scorer in Springbok history and no full back has scored more tries for the Boks than he did. The stats speak for themselves and we just had to do a tribute to Percy.
    Watch out for his second try against Scotland in 1997 - epic stuff!
    Enjoy and thanks for watching!

    I know this is late but I hope you see it anyway...
    I met Percy one day when my friend's son was trying out for Craven Week. They had a session booked on the field where the Stormers were finishing up their practice. Percy stuck around and had a chat and gave my friend advice to give his son. It was unnecessary, uncalled for and typical of this legend!
    Another incident that springs to mind is the game against Scotland in 1997. It was Percy, with a clear path to the line, who popped the ball across to James Small to go in and score his record breaking try. That unselfish, team first attitude was why I liked him so much. Well, that and RWC 2007 :)

    Percy between 2004 - 2007 was Mr Consistent. When he came back in 2004 he was a total different player, matured and level headed. A great a goal kicker under pressure and great under the high ball. Thanks to Jake White and the selectors for believing in him at the time.

    Ah love it. I remember Percy in the latter years of his career looked like he played somewhat scared (understandable seeing how rugby can smash a person over the years) however in the 2007 world cup he brought a high level of competence to the team and the perfect crowning of his career I believe.

    I really like Percy and he was a great asset to the team, but also had his weaknesses. As a forward I have a low tolerance for backs that don't put their body on the line, and that's the one thing Percy was guilty of on a few occasions. But he was instrumental in the 07 campaign, and have us some great moments. Hats off to the man.

    Anyone else see similarities between the angles Montgomery would run and the angles Huw Jones runs? He’s not that good yet but runs some really nice angles and solid runners. Is it a stormer thing I wonder? Maybe the same coach. I don’t know but if you do please let me know.
    Example: at 12:23 Montgomery scores a try against England in an almost identical way to how Huw Jones scored his in the six nations (2018).

    MAAAATE LEGEND!!!! I was going to ask for a Monty montage, what a hero Percy is one of my main inspirations for playing rugby along with Jonny Wilkinson.
    He looked great playing 13 why did he move to 15 for SA, was that because JDV came along or what anyone know?

    • @RealRugby
      @RealRugby  7 лет назад +6

      Epple Bradley Percy played full back throughout his high school career and also played full back at craven week. He made his name at WP as a centre mainly because Province had a gap there (it was before Fleckie really) and they had a solid back three in Justin Swart, Pieter Rossouw and James Small. After we lost our first test against the Lions in '97, the feeling was the Boks lacked potency in the back line and Carel du Plessis brought Percy in as an "unknown". He was fairly good on attack but was shown up on defense a couple of times against the All Blacks and Wallabies in 1997. On the end of year tour that year, Justin Swart was the first choice full back, but he got injured in the first test against Italy. That opened the door for Percy at full back and the rest, as they say, is history.
