Best fullback ever in my books. I wish The Sharks and Boks had not moved JP Pieterson from 15 to 14 because I do believe he would have been a similar player to Cullen and Serge Blanco. Two other similar 15's were Joe Roff and Andre Joubert but Cullen was the best of the lot by a mile.

Cullen was an amazing runner so effortless his ability to confuse defenders was amazing, but his all round game was not as good as other fullbacks

God, as an Australian who was late teens playing fullback back then, this guy was the greatest fullback (Chris Latham) a close second. I always tried to model my game on Cullen’s, always trying to run it from all corners to run the opposition off their feet. Glad I got to enjoy a few beers with him one night at The Transcontinental Hotel in Brisbane back in 1999.

I would love to have seen how good Cullen was at schoolboy level. He was such a balanced runner, even good shots on him wouldn't bring him down. If he was like that at school level he would've been impossible to stop - a one team scoring machine.
I saw him playing for Kapiti College during a tournament. Remember him running it back at every opportunity. Still got the newspaper clipping somewhere, where he was picked as the player of the tournament (which I wrote :)).
The 3 thing that made Cullen special. 1. Balance at pace, he could step in either direction without losng speed. 2. Full commitment to run straight, he always backed himself and didnt hesitate. 3. strength, he was very strong in the tackle somewhat because of the previous 2 points but also he was naturally very strong for his size.
Why John Hart played him at 13 during the ‘99 RWC, and why John Mitchell left him out of the 2003 RWC squad are two things I don’t understand. I would have just played him at fullback and give him licence to run.
