Cully was a legend, no question. One of my all time faves. But I'm still waiting for him to "go nuts" in this video. Both of his tries were laid on for him. Credit where credit's due, John Eales was the real hero of this match. One final observation: the game was less predictable, and more free flowing, back in those days. No ugly rolling maul or 'crash over' tries, no three minute scrums, less complex breakdown rules, no yellow/red cards for accidental offences, no lengthy stoppages for TMO intervention and rulings.
Yeah all those die hard true AB supporters are probably dead by now...... hence why modern all blacks arent the All Blacks anymore. Look at the vibe before kick off, the ABS look like lions compared to todays AB cubs.
Cullen was the most exciting fullback but not the best. I would argue that these 3 are the best NZ fullbacks --Ben Smith, Israel Dagg and John Gallagher. Smith: has the courage to take the high ball, very high IQ, strong on defense, excellent ball skills; Dagg: creative on attack, keeps the defenders guessing. Great touch finder, strong on defense. Gallagher: solid under the high ball, excellent link to the backline; strong defender, great handling skills.
@jamesquinn7484 actually, maybe John Gallagher. Cullen was exciting to watch because he opened up the game and at the time, the game was transitioning from amateur to professional. That means, defense was sloppy with little organization and players were still training in the evenings. Cullen was ahead of his time with his attacking style but if he was to start in today's era he would've have to kick more.
@jamesquinn7484 don't take it personally. Cullen was an exciting attacking fullback and probably won't see anyone like him but his defense was very questionable at times.
I remember this game as a kid and it was heartbreaking. As an adult though... this looks fixed. 2 mins with 81 on the clock and he allows the throw in at 83. Absolute fix job.
Thats interesting, look at 21:03, the wallaby dips his head while his teammates cheer the wallabies win. Definitely even he knew they didn't deserve the win through the penalty kick lol.

Bloody messy though. The breakdown is a shambles with players everywhere obstructing. I agree the tries were generally more entertaining though.
Preach!
Cullen was greatest full back ever
Cullen the best fullback ever
Culley is in the top 3 of all time rugby greats. Hands down the best
Oh no...what a time to live thru as a ABs supporter

I was at this game. I remember the Ref having to be shielded from the bottles that were being thrown in his direction!!!!
Cullen was electric, one of the best ever! I wish he was still around, much better than overrated Beauden Barrett!
That Wallaby player at the end looked gutted 😂

And we complain about today's refereeing......
Rubbish refereeing at the end.....looked like a blatant fix game.....just for that aussie can be cursed to not win it back for 30 years.
