Prof.Eli, your video class for navigation on Windows 2012 is really awesome. As you said at the end of your teaching that you are enjoying teaching thousand of potential windows server administrator. amazing goalI will try to finish all your class because it is amazing goal to learn from one of the internet video class and it is even free. LOL !!
I have almost give up on this course but finding you have helped me a lot getting my confidence back .Your ability to explain and simplify the subject is great. Your teaching skills are just amazing. I am planning to take the Microsoft exams soon and will not stop following your tutorials. May God bless you.
at around 15:55 when you say, "IF you have a windows key"... if you don't have a windows key, holding down Ctrl and hitting Esc is the same as hitting a Windows key. Kind of a shortcut for keyboards that don't have that key. Thanks for the Videos Eli. Every one I've seen has been good.
From 3 years in the future: Holding ctrl and hitting escape opens the start menu - which is the same as just hitting the windows key - but the windows shortcuts do not work. You cannot hit ctrl+esc+R to open the run box, for example.
Lol I was stressing myself trying to get WLAN to work on a laptop and didn't realise you had to install it through server manager. Once again Eli, you're the man ;)
I know that I am late to the party, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this video series. I'm a PLC programmer so why do controls engineering work. The company I just came to work for has every does everything virtual so everything is on server. So I'm having to learn some about about it and these videos are being super helpful. I like how in the first one you suggested building the lab, that was actually my initial approach. I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy now, so they use 2012 and as well as 2019 and some newer ones. So I'm starting with the older ones first and I'm going to go through this entire series and I'm going to build a lab. I just want to reiterate that I super appreciate this video series.
Hey Eli, This is one of the best few server videos i have come across. any plans of making similar videos for server 2016? honestly you are the best :)
Darling, I remember when point and click first came out & I had the same attitude! Look at it this way... with those un-functional options you may use this as an opportunity to steer the functionality of them! And with you knowledge, you're a very positive asset in this arena... btw ~ ♥ your classes, I'm learning a lot, plz keep them up! thx.....
I was waiting all day for the video... Looking forward to more videos. I Should be getting Windows Server 2012 Unleashed by Sams tomorrow. As far as the metro style i think it all comes down to getting adapted or adjusted to it. Cant wait to get to the hyper-v section.
That was great I am finally taking the sever leap at age 49 and you make it less scary . I guess knowing desktop support only does not cut it anymore you now need a server background
You can pin command prompt to taskbar from start, no need to go to all apps again. I love your videos and you have really great teaching strategy. What about Windows 8 - it's not really that bad, it's good, just different. different does not mean bad, all new OSs won't be the same. Moreover, it's much faster than Windows 7 - when I installed Windows 8 on my Windows 7 laptop it started to fly. And if someone cannot figure out how to shutdown that windows 8 or server 2012, he or she should just stop watching this video and drop all other IT classes.
Thanks for the walk through. Nicely done. My work won't get Win12 until the next patch and I still have not gotten around to downloading and playing with the trial, YET. Sure, it's funky. MS always is and some don't make sense on server because it probably isn't a touch screen server, but some things are surely cooler. Namely, they patched stuff and now the shut down is no longer on start menu, an old joke and a black eye of the past, for MS. I'll get used to it in no time. Thanks again! Kudos.
@10:00 minutes Actually on Windows Server 2012 Standard R2 it includes the start menu icon in the bottom left hand corner unlike here where you have to hover over the corner to get it to pop up.
hi eli, i am trying to get the network connection to work using Windows Server 2012 in VB.. how did you get that to work because mine is not cooperating
A couple thoughts relating to navigation that should simplify people's lives a bit. 1. You do not need to hover in the lower left corner for start to pop up to use that pop up, go all the way to that corner and click and it opens start. All the way to that corner and right click and it opens the menu. No need to wait. 2. You can press the windows key on the keyboard to get to the start screen, and just start typing. No need to go to search or anything of that nature to use it. It's the same as any other power user has used in the past of just hitting windows key and typing into the start menu (Vista and on). Just figured I'd offer that up to anyone that reads it. :)
+YesYou123333 Your observation is important for all of the other "noobs" watching this video - IE's enhanced security kicks your butt - I had to install Chrome from a USB.
The personalization screen came up blank because you have not enabled that feature yet. To enable it go to the add features box and check "Desktop Experience" under "User Interfaces and Infrastructure" you can then use the Personalization screen. To your point, I don't know why they don't just enable these things by default but at least they didn't include an entirely useless screen in this case.
Quick question - anything that I'm missing? I enabled the Message Queueing Feature, however when I go to the Server Manager dashboard, they are nowhere to be found. What gives?
I agree. I don't understand why people have such an issue with this. Just Windows key and start typing. It's faster than anything else. I can get to most of what I'm looking for in 2 or 3 key presses. Don't even need to touch the mouse.
You do realise that there's one little box you can uncheck in the Server Manager and it turns off IE's super strict security right? When you're done doing what you gotta do, just recheck it to turn it back on. Though I would personally prefer another browser over IE anyway, it's not the only option available.
Thanks. Hay, I have a request. I am trying to create a home database. However I have never been able go get xxamp to function on a linux server, in a home network.
It's so funny the way Server 2012 tells you that Personalization is not available in this edition of Windows but it STILL has a Save Changes button at the bottom. Microsoft needs to hire better H1-B's. (@12:15)
A little trick about Internet Explorer enforced security. Just go to Server Properties and look for IE Enhanced Security Configuration, click on "On" and in the pop up windows you will see the options to remove it for Admins and Users.
Eli can you teach the whole MCSE 70-410, 411, 412, and 413 and 414. That would be awesome I really want to get my MCSE and I know you can teach the best your amazing ;D !!!
I actually agree with them leaving all that stuff off by default. I like the idea of starting at the lowest feature set and only adding what I need. "Linux style" I like to call it lol. And most servers probably dont use the WiFi so I think it is reasonable to have it off by default.
Go to Features and turn on the Desktop Experience and the Personalization becomes fully functional. All my servers have desktop themes installed. And I run one of my servers with a 22 inch touch screen that works just fine. I rarely ever use the server manager. On my Start page and my desktops I have tiles or shortcuts to all the most commonly used programs.
I have 'desktop experience' turn on too, but I don't run a business, is just my home server. But if you run a business it is a bad idea since it enables extra features for hackers to exploit. For a good reason Microsoft disables internet explorer functionality, and disable desktop experience by default. You can re-enable internet explorer by going to server manager, then to, "local server" then click on "ie enhance security configuration" to OFF. (again it is a bad idea unless you are not running nothing important, or have sensitive information)
Your so right. I hate the 2012 ui , makes no sense, I just stick to 2008. I'm an I.t and every company that I have upgraded there networks, non of them wanted 2012. come on Microsoft step it up..
+David Cantrell for the start menu install classic shell. everything else really isnt that bad. company were Im IT at has mostly 2012 servers anymore. They work great.
Nice video. You should add tnat you can turn off the Internet Explorer Enhanced security by going to Server Manager, Properties Box and click on the hyper link "On" found next to the "IE Enhanced Security Configuration" line item. While I prefer Chrome over IE I find that if I shut off enhanced security option it makes it useable to the point that I rarely install Chrome on a server even though I used Chrome almost exclusively on my laptop.
you can dissable IE Enhanced Security Configuration from the Server Manager -> Local Server and then it behaves like on Windows 8. So there is absolutely no need to install a third-party browser. ;)
it is really sad to see the path Microsoft is taking... they are making the gui so user unfriendly that it's ridiculous, and convoluted. Eli, you should become part of the design team and put a touch of reality back into windows os and people in the real world are actually make the windows experience good instead of garbage like it is becoming
Two greatest contradictory statements of the century :- 1. You need just 1.4ghz processor and 512 ram to install this os. 2. You Chrome for better experience .... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
All your videos are helpful and they have taught every thing they i want to learn in Windows Server 2012

What a great teacher you are , you speak naturally unlike most robot teachers , they dont have any humour , David Bomball take notes

Excellent video Eli, your videos are making it so much easier to understand.
Very Nice approach in the Video. Really appreciate your work..
These are the really the best lessons, it surpasses live classes

A very useful explanation into how to use Microsoft server 2012 as a beginner

Many thanks. That was 22 minutes well spent!
I like the videos so much. Please keep up with the great work Eli.

Very informative, Great quality, keep up the good work.
i would like to thank you mr it guys u ar the boss from south africa
Wow! Searching for stuff and using the gui in
Win Server 2012, looks kinda tough. :p
Thanks for going through the interface dude.
This class was nice.
You have taught me a lot more then my teachers
Thanks for all these wonderful videos!

Good Classic Shell do work on Windows Server 2012 and the R2 version.
You've done really good, Appreciated

good tutorial for beginners, in real production environment with e.g. 800 desktop you using powershell and vb scripts
Thank you.!!! For the very good, videos lessons.
Eli I was wandering if you can help me and make a video on how to install 3cx PBX on Windows server 2012. Thanks
@10:00 minutes Actually on Windows Server 2012 Standard R2 it includes the start menu icon in the bottom left hand corner unlike here where you have to hover over the corner to get it to pop up.
I loved when you said For the love of the spaghetti monster because You can't disprove there isn't a spaghetti monster
To open the menu that pops up when you right click the start icon you can also press windows key + x. Might be a bit more simple to access
hi eli,

which recording software do you use?
One thing to note is that IE Enhanced Security is super easy to turn off and only takes two clicks and the IE issues go away.
honestly I'd like to see the windows 3.11 user interface reemerge but with updated usability
You are a LEGEND !!!!!!!
There's so much security on Windows Server 2012 I can't even download and install Google Chrome. Every time I chose to install I get a blank screen.
+YesYou123333 Your observation is important for all of the other "noobs" watching this video - IE's enhanced security kicks your butt - I had to install Chrome from a USB.

LOL! we have the same (initial) desktop, y'know, the recycle bin and the chrome browser :D
So Eli, do you prefer Window Server Small Biz 2011? looking at WS 2012, it looks, well, trashy.
I agree. I don't understand why people have such an issue with this. Just Windows key and start typing. It's faster than anything else. I can get to most of what I'm looking for in 2 or 3 key presses. Don't even need to touch the mouse.
nicely explained,thanks !

Dear Eli, I have a computer shop (Internet cafe). my question is can I use windows server 2012 operating system as my server thru my client pc?
Eli the Big man, can I added this features & tools while server is in work?
should i be learning to use windows server or ubuntu linux server
Both. You'll run into Windows servers fairly regularly. It's absolutely necessary to understand.
Eli The Very Helpful Guy!
Or, you can use the windows key, it'll get you into the metro interface, the windows key is so unloved.
Thanks. Hay, I have a request. I am trying to create a home database. However I have never been able go get xxamp to function on a linux server, in a home network.
Why didn't you talk about window server updates? I am new to this stuff but isn't windows update important
It's so funny the way Server 2012 tells you that Personalization is not available in this edition of Windows but it STILL has a Save Changes button at the bottom. Microsoft needs to hire better H1-B's. (@12:15)

Curious as to why you prefer Chrome over Firefox.
cool video!
Good video, thank you.
HUBBA HUBBA....class is in session!
Awesome! Want more!
Very informative.
Eli can you teach the whole MCSE 70-410, 411, 412, and 413 and 414. That would be awesome I really want to get my MCSE and I know you can teach the best your amazing ;D !!!
Windows + X is way faster to access the tools. It probably works on Server too.
just now i started windows server 2012 its pretty good to study i need a pdf for windows 2012 server author by sams
I actually agree with them leaving all that stuff off by default. I like the idea of starting at the lowest feature set and only adding what I need. "Linux style" I like to call it lol. And most servers probably dont use the WiFi so I think it is reasonable to have it off by default.
windows classic start download puts the start button back for windows 8 and server 2012
ALT+F4 nice little shortcut for shut down/restart =)
Yeah, that interface is really not the one to be used in a server OS.
Go to Features and turn on the Desktop Experience and the Personalization becomes fully functional. All my servers have desktop themes installed. there is a need just because it is IE but good to know lol
Moral of the story: only visit porn sites on your own server kids
For IE I just uncheck IE ESC and re-enable when done
just put the hd in another running comuter as a second drive and copy all your files
it is really sad to see the path Microsoft is taking... they are making the gui so user unfriendly that it's ridiculous, and convoluted. Eli, you should become part of the design team and put a touch of reality back into windows os and people in the real world are actually make the windows experience good instead of garbage like it is becoming

Hi Eli plz make videos on office365
'windows' button + 'x' button = administrative tools for computer

Hello 2019..

I will never touch windows 8 with 10 foot pole that is vista revisited.
Just turn off IE Enhanced Security... Go to Server Manager -> Local Server -> and you will see IE Enhanced Security.

Agree
