EDIT: To get this to work do the following:
    - In your virtual box machine settings, make the network adapter for both the server and client PC Bridged.
-on the server set the ip stuff as normal, make your dns your servers ip for primary dns and the default gateway address as your secondary dns.
-on the client leave the ip stuff dhcp but make the primary DNS your servers IP
This should now allow your pc to join the domain!
I'm doing everything in virtual box and I get up to 12:35. I've changed the network adapter on both my server and client pc to bridged instead of nat, however when I do ipconfig on the client, there's no DNS suffix and the ip address is the APIPA address. When I try to join the domain, I get "An Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain could not be contacted"

Thank you very much,it threw me off at first but I got it. You basically add both the server and client to the same network (you don't have to worry about the internet access since it doesn't matter, both server and client are still on the same network with the bridged setting) and the IP settings you described are perfect!

Where is the physical connection between the windows server machine and the switch made? Like if you have your lan set up with computers connected to a Cisco switch, how do you connect the switch to the server?

im using a vmware workstation player and when i do an ipconfig on my client it shows no dns suffix and the ip address is the apipa address. its similar to your problem and i have both of my virtual machines on bridged connection

Running Virtualbox and tried to set up the network but had the same issues as many of you. I tried setting the dns on the client machine to the server dns address, still didnt work. Tried changing the both machine networks to internal network, nope. After hours and hours of frustration, I finally discovered the workaround : In Virtualbox manager screen >>file>>preferences>>network>>host only networks>>VB host only adapter>>click the lil screwdriver on the right panel>>change your IP address to the server ip>>change your subnet mask to subnet mask of server ip>> click the DHCP server tab>>uncheck enable DHCP server>> go into the network settings for each instance of your client and server and change the network to host only follow elis instructions for setting up the rest from 13:15 .........profit ;)...Thanks for the vids Eli, you rock brother

What would you set the ip4 default gateway address of the server after you have configured this? would it still be considered 10.1.10.1 (if your going by the video ip numbers)?

In case anyone is in the same boat:
I had both a DCHP and DNS server already set up, and I did not want to migrate all of that data. As a result I removed DCHP from my AD controller and then added a DNS forward (pointed to the AD controller's DNS server) to my existing DNS server. It worked like a charm.

    Thanks Eli.
    Really saved my college assignment.
    New to networking.
Got a working Domain Controller and client machines.
Can I note had problems connecting clients to Domain controller until
I changed the network mode in virtual-box to Bridged Networking.
    Thanks again.

Hello, just want to make a quick post on adding client machines to your respective domain-whether live or business/enterprise environments. Like some of you, I was experiencing DNS issues to where some machines would not be able to contact the DC. I just happen to come across a video to where a guy suggested to switch off IPv6 and then follow up with joining the domain. Just like that, it worked-I have been racking my brain on this all week. Also, for you that have routers that provide IPv6 DNS Settings manually, be sure to switch that to "Auto" this will enable your DC to provide the DNS settings, not the router. Wooohhooo! Hope this helps someone.

I have done this many times but for some reason I couldn't add re-imaged machine to domain. I couldn't figure out what the heck was happening, or as it were not happening. Watching this easy to follow video had my slapping my head and exclaiming like Homer Simpson "DOH"!!!! I never checked to make sure I was definitely polling the correct server at 12:32 it hit me and Homer came flying out of my mouth. Lesson relearned, never assume that all is in place. You have to check and then verify and maybe check again, if you're like me. :D I appreciate you Eli, if for no other reason than keeping things simple enough to get me back on track.

  • @djlowtek

It's all going to depend on the software being used to deploy. Common ones are Symantec Ghost, and Acronis suites. There are many different ways to do it, so there isn't a set standard. They all work the same way though you get a client machine set up the way you like it, it gets "imaged" and then cloned out to all your other workstations.

Search or ask your ISP for the default router creds. Then look in the lan settings. Every router has its own interface, so you will need to ask your ISP helpdesk, look through every menu or search online for a guide. Also it is possible that some "routers" do not support disabling the dhcp service cause it is too cheap for advanced configurations.

Tarek Barikhan you can do it from the console (powershell, cmd, etc.) I agree with you I realized that's not the problem, I would tell people to make sure on what kind of a connection they have (NAT, bridge, internal) I tried bridge and worked with no issues, otherwise for some reason computers weren't connecting

I am going to save everyone's lives right now. You don't have to do what Eli says about turning off your router's DHCP. What you need to do is go into your network settings in the Windows machine and in the ipv4 set the ip address manually and in the DNS server part you must put the IP ADDRESS OF THE WINDOWS SERVER. THE SAME IP ADDRESS. for the alternate dns just put a different number is doesnt matter. and thats all no need to turn on dhcp or for the name of your domain to come up when you type ipconfig in cmd

A little constructive criticism: you seem to wast a lot of time hammering points that you could just hit once and move on. That would substantially reduce the time on each class, and make things easier to understand in the end. Keep up the good work. :-)

technically, you *can* add linux and mac osx computers to domain using likewise-open. i'm pretty sure it's good for accessing shared directories and printers and such, but obviously, you're not going to get all the same functionalities a windows os will get out of joining an AD domain though... but it is possible to do it.
