Ruchika Naik the $1 series needs to happen. This episode is what it is to be American at its core. A mixing pot of culture in a major city. I would love to tour authentic food culture in New York with a proper native of all the different cultures
If you are Indian and you meet another Indian store owner in America you will get stuff for free....Some things in India will never change,Love my country!
@Tanmay Umtol, @radioactive ood, and @ EshaPatel EshaPatel It depends on which state you are. I am a resident of SanFrancisco Bay area and south asian community is not as welcoming here of their other south asian people unless you know a store owner you know how we say "________ bhai or uncle se meri achchi salaam dua hai, discount mill jay ga yaar" you might say that to your friend But when I visited NYC I was shocked how welcoming and at home feeling desi store and restaurant owners provided us with. every Indian /Pakistani/ Bangali store I went to I got samples and free refills, extra stuff it was great.
I rarely drink çay as i dont like the taste that much... maybe the çay we use is too strong. I dont like coffee either... but çay does sort of taste nice... sort of...
people just expect it even when it isn't there bc the rest of buzzfeeds videos are so bad, but this one was really nice it showed an in depth look into a foreign culture without being preachy or blatently condemning whites or males for existing
I am neither muslim nor Asian but for some reason I've come back to watch this video countless times. There's just something about it. It's fascinating as well as heartwarming. Also, it was my inspo for abandoning coffee for masala tea. Bless.
Hamza Rehman It's because people like to say things they're more familiar with. Most people in Europe or America wouldn't understand what Chai is and so they wouldn't buy it. But if you say "chai tea" then people will know that it's a tea and will feel comfortable to try and drink it. it's the same reason why people will call Germany "germany" in English, and not Deutschland. We make things more familiar to ourselves.
AARON BUCKLEY It's in all languages actually. for example in Spanish speaking countries they call Germany "Alemania" instead of Deutschland. literally every language does this. It's because not all languages translate perfectly into each other. Some sounds cannot come out of English, but they do in some other languages.
Chai is bae.. I am from India.. that espresso machine tea is not authentic.. the real magic is when you brew the tea on stove.. Chandani seems authentic.
well there is a price difference between living in india and living in america. You have to feed your children. so yes, one dollar chai is pretty cheap especially for the NYC cost of living.
My parents are Gujarati and in our house if you haven't had you chai you cant start your day , and if your feeling extra you put all the masala type stuff in ginger etc also need like the side stufff ghatiya chevro.
Thanks for showing me an aspect of my home city of which I was unaware. Pink tea! Who knew? Chai made on the stove or with an espresso machine! Who knew? I'll pop down to Chandni, Haandi, and Punjabi to broaden my life experience.
This was so so so great. I love how this was informative yet still entertaining for people that don't know a lot about south asian culture. I am south asian and I loved this because its so relatable and reminded me of my family. As silly as this sounds, representation, even in a short buzzfeed video about chai, is so important because it can bring lots of different people together. Thanks Ahmed!
maham meher kashmiri chai or sheer chai or as it is actually known in kashmir as nun chai is supposed to be salty, definitely an acquired taste and completely different from 'regular' chai
The cabbie was so cute!! I love these types of videos because not only is it interesting, it's nice to know that the cabbie had a day where he got to do something interesting and fun. Good job, Buzzfeed!
no he didnt in the reflection the meter was on offduty i drove cab in nyc and can tell you he didnt keep meter on, also they probably paid him and knew him as he called him uncle as a term of endearment.
i just had almond milk at an Indian restaurant today and they put zafaran, almond, ginger, raisin and maybe some other spices that l dont know of. Its good when you drink cold 😁
Bro, just letting you know, India is a separate colonizer of West Bengal and Assam; those lands belong to Bangladesh. Bengal/Bangladesh has ALWAYS been a separate country from India. Let Bangladesh's independence today forever be a tron in your side, =)
Love the Allahu Akbar comments, like they are supposed to offend us Muslims or something. It means Allah is Great, I say this subconsciously a hundred times in a day. Keep going guys.
Really short summary about the history behind the word "chai". The word chai started in India which means tea. But years before that the mandarin chinese language had the word "cha" for tea (without the "i" at the end). "Chai" was mainly used in India (for a while) until it spread through the west part of asia (middle east) and so on. Just wanted to say this if anyone seems confused where the word is originally from. Correct me if I said something wrong tho :)
well green tea is also referred to as 'chai', so it doesn't have to be black tea in particular. the tea is usually prepared with milk but sugar is not a necessity.
In India, Chai=Tea, point blank. If we need it with milk, we say 'doodh(milk) waali chai', which is essentially tea with milk, if we do not want milk, we say 'kaali chai', that is black tea. Then you have 'masala chai', which is tea with clove, cardamom and other spices. Chai is a pure generic term and is the exact translation of 'tea'. You can brand it with a suffix to make it however you want.
The main difference is that you cook it on the stove for a long time with the milk. Then the tea infuses really nicely with the milk and it all becomes really creamy and flavourful (especially if you add the spices too).
***** no i didnt spell it wrong where i am from that is how we spell it .. though it is pernounce the same way and is sort of the same thing .. been drinking it for as long as i can remeber loool! 😜
Hassan Islam lol idk because that is how we spell it where i am from but its sort of the same thing its tea , more of an arabic way though but its pernounced diffrently .. but does it matter how i spell it when i grew up with chai .. chaj or qaj .. or whatever all diffrent spelling but allpernounced the same way .. so???
Hey random person scrolling through the comments! Hope you have a superb day and a great 2017 💚From a smaller RUclipsr who's dream is to hit 7k subs 🎉🙏
not necessarily true, majority of people who dislike islam really dislikes arab muslims, they don't usually don't care about other regions, as they don't like arab muslims either, Turks dont like them, south east asains don't like them, south pacific asains don't like them, It's b/c the Arab region is filled with radicals, and full islamic governments.
The thing is, Chai is essentially a loan word in the English language and as with many loan words that are assimilated in to any language, it's not going to be used absolutely correctly as meanings can drift in translation/adoption process.
Shubham Singh Rawat i forgot to mention the fact that older people that come from a pakistani background speak urdu mixed with punjabi conjugation or words, my dad does it too so do my older relatives, aunties, and uncles its just a sort of act with wearing off language or bringing language to another level.
Charlene Forced to? Nah there's something called trade. Just like how China is named 'China' but in Arabic its 'Sin' as the trading route passes India during the 'Qing' dynasty and Arabians couldn't pronounce Q and G properly.
I'm a Bengalee and nothing pleases me more than a hot cup of strong liquor Darjeeling Tea with a bit of grated ginger, lime and no sugar but a bit of honey. That's heaven for me!
Normally detest BuzzFeed videos, but this was very well-made. Not only is it an interesting culinary expose, but it's also a great insight into a community.
This makes me feel so warm. Its so cool to see our own people doing something of our cukture and stuff you know. Its just so cool to know what they are talking about and relate. I personally go to restaraunts and they will give you free pakuras and samosas and stuff and cha is just awesome... (cha is how it is pronounced)
Chai for two... Crush two cloves of cardamom. Crush quarter inch of ginger. Put it in a pan. 3 teaspoons of sugar. 2.5 teaspoons of good quality granulated tea (not tea bags. Not leaf tea.) put 1.5 cups of hot water. Boil for 3-5 mins until water is reduced to 1 cup. You will get better with more practice. In the mean time microwave 1 cup of milk for 1 min. Pour it into the pan. Bring whole thing to a boil. Careful so that the milk tea does not foam over. Stir it with a spoon. Strain into two cups.. Enjoy.. Total time needed around 7 to 10 mins. Love from an Indian in Toronto..
Prefer? South India cannot function without it's coffee in the mornings(and a couple of more times during the day) and stronger spirits in the evenings :D
Try filter coffee especially kumbakonam filter coffee, it's heavenly and the best coffee I have ever tasted, Starbucks will have run for the money if it gets launched in USA.
And BTW... chai isn't even a Muslim thing! It's a South Asian thing. So it's basically a (Indian-Bangladeshi-Pakistani thing)... but I know it's majorly an Indian thing because UK conquered India and they gave us tea. But it still remains as a Pakistani thing!
K Shoker Yup! Although, a little correction on the originated in India thing. India and Pakistan used to be one nation ruled by the mughals. The mughals introduced chai because they thought it would bring strength to their army, but the British began pouring milk into it. It's a mix of all three countries :)
Pakistan was a creation by the brits for when the brits were leaving needed an military base. This has to be the most useless comment that I have to had to correct....in like EVERRRR.
buzzfeed should start a $1 series

Why do you say chai tea if chai already means tea, so every time you say chai tea you're actually saying tea tea
I wrote this before watching the video
Hamza Rehman It's because people like to say things they're more familiar with.
Most people in Europe or America wouldn't understand what Chai is and so they wouldn't buy it. But if you say "chai tea" then people will know that it's a tea and will feel comfortable to try and drink it.

This was so so so great. I love how this was informative yet still entertaining for people that don't know a lot about south asian culture. I am south asian and I loved this because its so relatable and reminded me of my family. Basically "pakistani" cuisine doesn't exist, it's all basically originated from the Indian subcontinent so it's "Indian cuisine".

Yes! I spent my childhood in Kenya and drank it every day after school with buttered bread (Blue Band).
Ivy Kerubo Ohh? You call tea 'chai' in Kenya too? I never knew that
Really short summary about the history behind the word "chai".

"Chai" was mainly used in India (for a while) until it spread through the west part of asia (middle east) and so on. Correct me if I said something wrong tho :)
Gujaratis use Cha instead of Chai. It would be interesting to see how that word came into use amongst them.
Anyone else tragically hungry after watching that deliciousness?!?

Love Punjab Grocery and Deli, amazing food
Totally love Punjabi. Best food and great prices and friendly service
So is Chai black tea with milk and sugar? What's the difference between traditional Chai and what Westerners call Chai?
well green tea is also referred to as 'chai', so it doesn't have to be black tea in particular. the tea is usually prepared with milk but sugar is not a necessity.
Barbara Also you typically find elaichi chai which is cardomom chai. basically there are usually just a lot of spices.
But in the middle east, we also drink chai but most people does not add milk. We usually just drink it with sugar.
The main difference is that you cook it on the stove for a long time with the milk. Then the tea infuses really nicely with the milk and it all becomes really creamy and flavourful (especially if you add the spices too).
Id love more of these types of videos btw.

Thank you, Buzzfeed, for doing this!! US is about so many other cultures. And Chai is such a big part of our lives.
It's a shame that Islamophobia paints these hard working people in a negative light.
not necessarily true, majority of people who dislike islam really dislikes arab muslims, they don't usually don't care about other regions, as they don't like arab muslims either, Turks dont like them, south east asains don't like them, south pacific asains don't like them, It's b/c the Arab region is filled with radicals, and full islamic governments.

okay devil dog
Annatar .....arrre, but islam is *CANCER* to humanity.
It must've been so nice for the cab driver to drive around drinking chai and getting paid to do it
who else is Bengali that drinks chai like me?
The thing is, Chai is essentially a loan word in the English language and as with many loan words that are assimilated in to any language, it's not going to be used absolutely correctly as meanings can drift in translation/adoption process.
That pink tea looked so cool!! It was so much brighter pink than I thought it would be
But that wasn't urdu though @ 4:51. Sounded like punjabi
They're like the same language you know that right?
lmao no they're not at all. True punjabi sounds wayy different than urdu.
it indeed was punjabi.... Nd they both are way diffrent language

chai means tea in swahili ( spoken in kenya, Africa) too but I think that's because the Indians were forced to come to East africa

If you use Lipton to brew chai, you need to step your game up
Any other Desi that prefers coffee and gets judged big time?
Shivam Bhatt I prefer coffee but I don't get judged
South Indian Filter coffee for life!
We South Indians prefer coffee actually
Prefer? South India cannot function without it's coffee in the mornings(and a couple of more times during the day) and stronger spirits in the evenings :D
People be like "oh wow now you're trynna act rich huh?"
Try filter coffee especially kumbakonam filter coffee, it's heavenly and the best coffee I have ever tasted, Starbucks will have run for the money if it gets launched in USA.

LEER OVER ISLAM got heeem
LEER OVER ISLAM try it and you are going to be addicted.
LEER OVER ISLAM You are right, put the milk and the tes where they belong, far away from each other. Deze mensen weten niet wat ze doen...
I meant tea ^
And BTW... chai isn't even a Muslim thing!
Ravi Garg u tell them! btw u are soooooooooo cute!😘😍🤗
