      It depends on which state you are. I am a resident of SanFrancisco Bay area and south asian community is not as welcoming here of their other south asian people unless you know a store owner you know how we say "________ bhai or uncle se meri achchi salaam dua hai, discount mill jay ga yaar" you might say that to your friend
      But when I visited NYC I was shocked how welcoming and at home feeling desi store and restaurant owners provided us with.
      every Indian /Pakistani/ Bangali store I went to I got samples and free refills, extra stuff it was great.

    • @hamzarehman3517

      I wrote this before watching the video

    • @JohnSmith-mc1wn
      @JohnSmith-mc1wn 8 лет назад +50

      Hamza Rehman It's because people like to say things they're more familiar with.
      Most people in Europe or America wouldn't understand what Chai is and so they wouldn't buy it. But if you say "chai tea" then people will know that it's a tea and will feel comfortable to try and drink it.
      it's the same reason why people will call Germany "germany" in English, and not Deutschland. We make things more familiar to ourselves.

    • @hamzarehman3517
      @hamzarehman3517 8 лет назад +10

      +John Smith thanks man, your comment is appreciated

    • @JohnSmith-mc1wn
      @JohnSmith-mc1wn 8 лет назад +6

      AARON BUCKLEY It's in all languages actually.
      for example in Spanish speaking countries they call Germany "Alemania" instead of Deutschland.
      literally every language does this. It's because not all languages translate perfectly into each other. Some sounds cannot come out of English, but they do in some other languages.

    Really short summary about the history behind the word "chai".
    The word chai started in India which means tea. But years before that the mandarin chinese language had the word "cha" for tea (without the "i" at the end). "Chai" was mainly used in India (for a while) until it spread through the west part of asia (middle east) and so on. Just wanted to say this if anyone seems confused where the word is originally from.
    Correct me if I said something wrong tho :)

    • @NC-hu3ti
      @NC-hu3ti 7 лет назад

      Gujaratis use Cha instead of Chai. It would be interesting to see how that word came into use amongst them.

    So is Chai black tea with milk and sugar? What's the difference between traditional Chai and what Westerners call Chai?

    • @saphiretamer
      @saphiretamer 8 лет назад +12

      well green tea is also referred to as 'chai', so it doesn't have to be black tea in particular. the tea is usually prepared with milk but sugar is not a necessity.

    • @amulyaaditham6991
      @amulyaaditham6991 8 лет назад +7

      Barbara Also you typically find elaichi chai which is cardomom chai. basically there are usually just a lot of spices.

    • @Sh-wu1lz
      @Sh-wu1lz 8 лет назад

      But in the middle east, we also drink chai but most people does not add milk. We usually just drink it with sugar.

    • @Spleandor
      @Spleandor 8 лет назад +27

      In India, Chai=Tea, point blank. If we need it with milk, we say 'doodh(milk) waali chai', which is essentially tea with milk, if we do not want milk, we say 'kaali chai', that is black tea. Then you have 'masala chai', which is tea with clove, cardamom and other spices. Chai is a pure generic term and is the exact translation of 'tea'. You can brand it with a suffix to make it however you want.

    • @ro_ses
      @ro_ses 8 лет назад +2

      The main difference is that you cook it on the stove for a long time with the milk. Then the tea infuses really nicely with the milk and it all becomes really creamy and flavourful (especially if you add the spices too).

    Chai for two...
    Crush two cloves of cardamom. Crush quarter inch of ginger. Put it in a pan. 3 teaspoons of sugar. 2.5 teaspoons of good quality granulated tea (not tea bags. Not leaf tea.) put 1.5 cups of hot water. Boil for 3-5 mins until water is reduced to 1 cup. You will get better with more practice. In the mean time microwave 1 cup of milk for 1 min. Pour it into the pan. Bring whole thing to a boil. Careful so that the milk tea does not foam over. Stir it with a spoon. Strain into two cups.. Enjoy.. Total time needed around 7 to 10 mins.
    Love from an Indian in Toronto..
