    The “Derrick Rose Rule,” which was created after Rose won his MVP while playing on his rookie contract, allows young stars in the NBA to qualify for a higher maximum salary-30% of the cap instead of 25%-early in their careers

I’m a huge bulls fan and still a huge d.rose fan, but I’m going to say it like it is. Rose barly plays games, he will not give you 82 games. You might get 40 games out of him the entire season, I know players get hurt because all of them do but I still see guys who suffered similar injuries still stay on the court and still has that hungry to be the best in the league. My boy d.rose lost that he’s more passive now and him getting older isn’t an excuse because Lebron, Jordan, Kobe all still drove to be the best in the league even in there late 30’s. I love d.rose but I miss the why can’t I be mvp d.rose a whole lot more. It’s not your body that makes you great it’s your mentality and that I am the best mentality left rose years ago.

      @@paulring9246 I get all that, it’s determination or you let it get to you mentally and start playing cautious. How can you play at an elite level being cautious worrying if you will get injured. I am a D. Rose fan but I’m not afraid to talk about the reality of rose, I’ve watched the mindset he had prior to injury and the mentality to be the best in the league is gone now. He’s more passive and cautious when he plays now, he doesn’t have the mindset he had when he wanted to league to fear him on the court. So at this point no I don’t know if Derrick would go in the HOF at this point because he hasn’t done enough after injury to go there. We can’t just put him there because his name is Derrick Rose if that’s the case it’s a whole lot of players that can go to the hall of fame.

    The Supermax is one of the biggest failures the NBA dished out. While the intention was to allow smaller markets to retain their star players, the reality is that these teams are locked in paying a player an absurd amount of their cap space for years to come and hope that said player doesn't get injured or his form doesn't fall off a cliff. Look no further in this case than John Wall and the Washington Wizards - the moment he signed the Supermax, Wall got injured, he was never the same and when the Wizards traded him it was for the larger contract of Westbrook (and they had to give up a 1st round pick as well). Also, considering how Kemba's career went down, in hindsight the Charlotte Hornets made the right call not giving him the Supermax.

      I mean Wall and Russ projected to fall off soon after signing the Supermax. The Supermax can work as long as your main guys are still productive and healthy. I don't think Jokic,Giannis or Embiid will have issues with production as long as they're healthy because of their size.

    • @TrueGuardify
      @TrueGuardify 2 года назад +3

      Yes, literally this. The NBA thought that small market teams being able to offer the most money would help them keep their stars but in reality it just fucks their cap space and leaves them unable to afford a good supporting cast for their star. Now, if they were able to offer 35% of the cap but only take a 25% cap hit, that's way more incentive for stars to stay in their small market teams, since they'll actually be able to get a good supporting cast with the cap space now available and stay competitive. Most of these supermax guys get traded after a few years because they want to compete for a chip but their organisation can't afford to pay quality supporting players to help them.

    I love the idea to have the supermax not count as much against the cap of the team. It’s not fair for a team to have to destroy all its financial flexibility to keep one great player. And why would that player want to stay if the team can’t afford to build around them? Again, great idea to change that.

    Completely agree on the supermax idea. To me, a supermax contract should be equal to 40% of the salary cap but only 20% counts towards the cap. This would allow teams to sign and or resign role players. Then if capped any max deals to 25% and not allow any additions to reach the 30-35% range, that should give enough incentive for players to reach a “supermax” deal. However, the criteria to me should be simply completing your 2nd contract with the team that drafted you. Or if traded by the team that drafted you. To prevent a Kwahi or AD type scenario you could put in a revision that GM’s can sign that a player essentially forced the teams hand. As in refusal to play, had consistent “non threatening” injuries, behavior deter mental to the team. Players would be allowed to appeal this assignment and state their case. This would allow a check and balance. Incentives players to stay for larger sums of money. Teams could build around stars. Players couldn’t be punished by teams trading them away. And teams would not be held hostage by their players.

      I mean, it’s no brainer. Do you really think owners care about the fans? No. Owning a franchise is their investment. Investment means money.

      @@robert2690 IMO this is one of the rare cases where the interests of both the owners and fans coincide. Fans want to see the stars on the floor, the owners want to see the stars on the floor to attract ticket buyers. I'm guessing what will happen is the players would ask for better mental health support from the team, and then the owners will ask for contract changes that prevents the player from holding the team hostage. They'll hammer it out eventually in their meetings.

    One thing I could suggest for the Supermax issue: have the team exempt one player at a time from luxury tax/salary cap calculations. Same criteria as with those eligible for a Supermax, however as long as that player is with the team, he will take that designation unless they waive the designation and the player would slide back to the "normal" max level salary. This would incentivize the teams to retain their drafted players while not limiting their options to give him ample support.

    As of now, the supermax contracts don't really benefit both the team and the player in terms of building a championship-caliber team. Best one so far is with Steph and the Warriors but even the Warriors were struggling to keep their dynastic team going and their present team had to rely on their draft picks, finding unknown or undervalued players, and sucking up another max contract to keep it competitive while being stuck with no cap space

  • @agentalberta6531
    @agentalberta6531 2 года назад +1

    I am not an expert, can anyone explain to me why the contract or supermax deal couldn't be something like :" After 4 years (Rookie deal) you can offer a extension with lets say, 20% of the total salary plus 10-25% over the salary cap. So you can actually paid your superstar while maintaining the necessary cap space for other player as well?" Because a lot superstar player want the money but they also understand once they sign it, the team won't have enough for a compelling rosters anymore. So they either sign the supermax then left, or request a trade to another team so they can sign a supermax there. It doesn't make any sense to me. If you allow something like bird rights or rookie extension to have part of the salary to be removed from the salary cap, the team would still be able to offer other players to join. Not every team is lucky enough like OKC to draft 3 MVP players, And even that, they had no choice to let them go later on. If the team like OKC could pay KD, Harden and Westbrook each with 20% total salary while KD has an 25% over salary, Harden and Westbrook each had 10% over. They would still be able to keep Serge and Adams because they still have the 'cap space' to offer to none supermax player.

    Supermaxes should count less on the cap for the teams. (25% instead of 35%)
    If they add a second supermax (Durant/Curry) the team with the contracts pays the full luxury tax.
    Also supermaxes come with auto no-trade clause, if they're traded the player under contract loses their annual 8% raise. That 8% still counts against the original team, and the team can't sign a new supermax until the current players' contract is expired. (Basically turns the supermax into a 10yr veteran max contract)
    This makes it so teams can't just salary dump supermaxes (Westbrook/Wall?) for draft picks. If players (Harden) wanna force their way out, they have to pay literally and approve of the trade because of the ntc.
    This would increase the importance of "regular" max players, they'd become more valuable because they can be moved. You'd see basically no supermax movement anymore because of the cap hit and $$ loss, and preventing new supermax signings.

  • @MrBubblecake
    @MrBubblecake Год назад

    Also the Arenas rule was a great example of sterns corruption. The rule is bs because free agency/salary cap was designed for exactly that reason, so other teams had a chance to steal players if the original team didn’t manage correctly. If a team doesn’t have enough cap space to sign their rising star and only signed him for 2 years, that’s on them for not managing the salary cap better. This was the start of the leagues manipulation of markets. Just like the super max, it was intended to let bad franchises hold players hostage after drafting them for as long as possible because it’s profitable

    The second one is just a bad rule. Just saying, Kemba is the best player Charlotte have drafted (so far, Lamelo would be consider better in the future), and they didnt want to pay him the bag. But at the end, they are better than a team with Kemba having the supermax and a bunch of bad players would have been. Compromising 35% of your salary with just one player could make your team strugle to get better players surround your superstar and they will stuck in no mans land, just like Beal in wsh or Russ when he was in Okc, after KD's departure. A lot of players might choose the money, but the stars/superstars will choose compete, even thought they signed a contract with less money involved.
