Took me a while to get it working but once I figured it all out, it's amazing. Pro-tip for anyone doing this on a server with friends, build a small minecart circle 120 blocks above the chest as an anti-idle mechanic so the server doesn't kick you and you can farm gunpowder overnight. Thanks so much for showing this!
@@chaos6203 cause spawning is weird, and you get better spawn rates while standing above the farm as apposed to away from the chest. being above it is important. idk how spawning works its a little wierd but you just kinda have to accept it, it confuses me too
Overall, this design is awesome and stupid simple!! I did find one little issue with it, one that's easily corrected. Using the replay mod, I noticed that spiders still spawn inside. Thanks to the six trap doors, The hole in the middle isn't a hole in the eyes of mobs (which is why this design works in the first place!), OR in the eyes of the engine that spawns the mobs. So in essence, there is a space in the middle, centered on the hole, that is 3x6, where spiders can and will spawn. This is easily fixed by putting a 13th and 14th piece of carpet, next to the middle trap doors on each side of the hole. It doesn't seem to inhibit creepers path-finding to the hole at all. Also, it's not mentioned in the video, but keep all spawn floors above Y-63! Otherwise the farm will absolutely FILL with BATS!
dear diary, i woke up in this dark area today. i went to explore, and found a cat! i ran for my life! the run didn't last long, because later i found myself in a hole. i am on a stream of water, going into a light. i think i see legs behind it, i'm going to go investigate. wish me luck!
I just built this in 1.17.1 the two blocks over the lava are crucial for good rates. Two stacks of scaffolding up to an afk spot seemed perfect. I only built one level and am getting really good rates.
Adding my experience to hopefully help others. :) I'm playing the Java Edition, running version 1.16.3 (with OptiFine installed). I'm playing in survival mode on normal difficulty. tl:dr; yes, this works. Details below. - Quick note: I only had one cat handy when I built this so believe it or not I was able to get this farm to work even at 50% cat-power. - I built the structure exactly as outlined (but closed off one half of the farm as I did not have a second cat or additional carpet.) Built it in a mountain biome btw. - From there, I took a stack of torches and dropped them all over the surrounding area, including one small cave nearby. - My treasure chest/hoppers were at elevation 89 so I added 120 to get a final desired elevation of 209. I then built an AFK tower that would allow me to safely sit at elevation 209. - Using this 50% capacity farm, I was able to get 76 units of gunpowder in about 30 minutes. It's not the most effective but I'm a humble farmer with a single cat. XD - There were tons of creepers during the day and almost none at night. I found that sleeping seemed to move things along a little and helped despawn any wayward zombies/skeletons. Advice: - Did you build everything exactly as outlined? (I forgot the six trapdoors leading down to the lava funnel initially.) - Did you cover the trapdoors with a full block of stone to ensure all light is blocked? - Are your hoppers pointed the right way? - Did you remember to add carpet? - Are the signs placed correctly? - Are you 120 blocks away vertically? (Horizontal distance did not work for me when I tested it.) Hope this helps someone out there. :)
THANK YOU! Once I read the part about 120 blocks away from the chest I had a "DOH!" moment and rebuilt my AFK platform and BAM creepers started rolling in.
this is perfect thank you so much ! I play single player and usually I build very efficient farms so that I just have to afk for a couple of hours to be set for a while or it becomes very tedious. But this time I built my base just outside of range of the spawn chunks and I'm building small easy to build farms in the spawn chunk and the fact that they run all the time gives me all the resources I need even tough they are not that effective. This one is perfect and easy to decoratea s it looks a lot like a butterfly from the outside :)
Finally a farm that does not need a million hoppers Edit: thanks for the likes (I don’t comment on a lot of videos but I realized that I almost had 700 likes on this one)
This 100% works on 1.16, just tested it on the latest snapshot with no problems what so ever! We are very close to 1.16 release so if it works no it will work in full release!! That issue with creepers blowing up near cats was probably a problem with the code (assuming cats were player entities) since they were redoing a batch a code which is also the main reason optifine didnt work for so long! New code breaks alot of overlooked simple things!
According the the minecraft wiki it will! Heres what I would do.. Go to creative, even if it a new world, Get a cat and creeper egg. Place both next to eachother and see what happens... If the creeper runs in bedrock it will work! Doesnt matter if its creative or survival! Mechanics are the same between the 2
Chapman I believe creepers don’t run from cats if they’re sitting on bedrock, I have an artificial village and I tamed the stray cats to deter creepers and the creepers just walked right on through. This was a small glimpse however, so yeah I’d definitely have to try it out
I randomly clicked on this and was not expecting something so good! I'm going to have to try this. Also, your results were good, but I am sure you realize that all of the farms were basically "competing" with each other and spreading out the mob cap pretty thin with so many right next to each other. I think I'm thinking about that correctly haha!
I made 13 layers, 26 cats!! Light up every single place where mobs can spawn and I got almost 11 stacks of gunpowder every +-10 minutes . It took 1,5 hours to find al the caves under the farm. It really pays off.
Everytime I need a certain farm you post it. Im not sure if you remember my comment on your trident farm video I said your magic. This time, I REALLY think you can read my mind
I went into this one thinking it was gonna be another painful farm, but to be honest this was one of the easier and more productive farms I've ever had
Did this on a server, here’s what i found: i did this farm with two layers. more trapdoors but not very hard to do at all. I afked 120 blocks above the block where the chest is (in my case block 55 so i afked at 175). I built this over an ocean, harder to do but in 15 minutes i got 2 stacks and an extra 12 of gunpowder. with my build i seem to have gotten one skeleton and one zombie but majority of the mobs were creepers. highly recommend if you’re on a server and no one is on, that way you’re the only player in the for mobs to spawn as i’ve learned with previous mob farms i’ve made. thank you so much!!
Isn't it that people build giant farms on servers because they then sell the things they are farming? Otherwise theese giant farms aren't really so useful.
@@kBandik I build them just because. I just like having tons of materials so I never ever have to worry about it anymore even if I decide to make like a giant TNT build or something.
@@vetriz8918 Okay, but if you AFK the whole night in that farm, I think you won't need gunpowder. If you do then AFK one more night. No need in building gigantic farms.
The one layer farm is probably all you need for a single-player world. Maybe the two layer farm if you burn through rockets too quickly. The rest are really good for Anarcho-Collectivist and Commune servers (depending on how much lag your friends are willing to put up with).
Matthew Neumann Any news if the 1.16 Bedrock release with give us some better mob farming? I’ve read we’re getting improved iron farming and hoping for more consistency with Java on mobs, too. Need gunpowder!
@@mykolatuka7196 Actually according to a video I watched a bit ago bed mining is the least effcient speed wise while tnt mining is the fastest but bed mining has 1 upside of it being cost effective but with this video on how to farm gun powder its not as bad
you mean they die on it while going to the drop place? I was thinking really hard how to put the lava better so that half of powder won't just fissss and it was annoying, I decided to fuck it after I tried moving it and using hopper minecart. I thought it'd be possible with pistons, but didn't think of magma. I hope it'll work. If it does work, I wish all the love in world to you. It's was so fricking annoying trying to change it thinking in a box, but not outside it.
This went so smooth, even my chest was on the same y level so i didn't have to put any thinking into it at all 😂😂 thank you lol works great. Keeps my Elytra full
I suggest having 2 cats per side separated by 3 blocks apart, having 1 cat sometimes a creeper or 2 gets stuck in a corner, having 2 cats each side separated by 3 blocks stops them from being stuck
phenominal little farm. I put one in my realm, and while I building the upper afk area, about 10 minutes I got 2 1/2 stacks of gun powder. For just me... its more than enough. I'll add layers when I want to start majro tnt production. Good job :)
Anyone having trouble with SPIDERS on Java, you can solve this by shifting the middle set of carpets on each layer forward two on each side. That is, the one under the cat, and the one in front of that each need to be moved forward two spaces towards the drop chute. I think what happens is that the trap doors are counting as spaces for the spider spawning, meaning the chute allows them to spawn. By shifting these carpets forward you remove all 3x3 spawning areas without needing more carpet.
Alex Gurr Gaming Well you can use Campfires too, but theyre not that good because its half a block and not a full block. Still you can use Campfires but you need to still use Minecarts with hoppers.
I made this on my server that I play with with my cousin, and when I told her to stay away from my base, she immediately came. There were some creepers there and when she walked by she was blown up, and it didn't do much damage at all to my build! She hasn't come to visit my base in about 2 weeks and stays a 200 block radius away from my base at all times. XD
One thing to note with multiple farms in range of the player: Each individual farm will be less effective than it would if it were the only one in range. The reason you afk way up in the sky is to make sure your farm is the only place in range to spawn mobs. That said, the more spawning platforms/layers you have, the faster and more consistently you'll spawn creepers, but with diminishing returns as you reach the game's mob cap.
Thank you so much!!! This is so simple and pretty efficient when you stack a lot of these! There can't be any area inside that is 3x3 because spiders can spawn there. I moved carpets to cover those areas and it's fine now!
I just made this and it hasn't been running that long but I already have more than two stacks of gunpowder! This is the best design I've ever built! Thank you!
Can confirm it works in 1.17.1, Java Edition, Survival hardmode multiplayer. I built it waaaaay up in the air (200+), I also switched from Lava to Campfire since I thought some gunpowder might be destroyed by he lava. Will note that the spawn rate was SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED to basically nothing when there were players on he server about 500 blocks from me. I got about 60pcs in 10minutes when I was alone on the server (With a three layer spawner), which I think is good. You can also convert it so they don't die and just use a looting sword to kill them to really increase the loot rate.
@@alastor598 If it isn't working, check if you have trapdoors placed along the hole that the creepers fall into. If that doesn't work, make sure you are 120 blocks higher than the chest. If neither work, then you are either in minecraft bedrock which might not work, or you have some light inside the build.
When you build the whole thing and spend 3 hours afk and come back down to see 6 gunpowder in the chest and read the description that says it don’t work in bedrock right at the bottom
Quick notes for those building this: Important: Make SURE you build the AFK tower for survival one hundred and twenty EIGHT (8) blocks. From the chest. Not 120, not 125, You want 128. 128 is the despawn limit range and will provide the best results. 129 just to be safe. Take the Y value of the chest and Add 128, thats the height above the chest you need to be. Also: be sure to place many torches in the quick surrounding area, and in any known caves around the spawner. These steps gave me good results on java edition 1.16+
This is exactly what I needed, something super simple that doesn't require mumbo jumbo's grace to achieve. I even slapped tinted glass on the sides and roof and it works just as good.
did u afk 120 blocks high from the farm chest? also did u light every cave nearby? also light the surface cuz at night mobs spawn(obviously) and take up mob cap
@@HakingMC you have to stay so far away due to minecraft algorithm basically they set it so mobs cant spawn too close to you so you dont die off the rip
I love this. It's so much more compact then other builds that usually involve dropping the creepers to their death and everything is still easily accessible on your first few Minecraft days. I suppose the downside is that you lose some of the gunpowder in the lava? Otherwise, I'm not sure why this isn't the more common technique. Also, you can look at your creepers funneling to their death, which is pretty cool.
Thank you for helping build my mission to make strip mines in the regular world and the nether, I’ve gotten over 50 stacks of gunpowder so far and a stack of netherite ingots
@DarkDimensionZ Hostile Mobs spawn 24 blocks away from you and farther. The water only goes down twice, so it adds up to 16. If it goes down thrice, it will be 24, making the collection place afk-able
@@Mahfy3w Yes that would work, but you would get significantly less gunpowder as it allows other mobs to spawn near you (assuming that you haven't mob proofed the surrounding area). The reason he says to go up 120 blocks it to only allow spawns in the creeper farm and get more gunpowder. So yes, your way would work but its not recommended.
@@sorrygtfo that is true for most of these farms. you either have to climb up a ladder, or you have to make sure to fully light all the caves and surface in an area of 256*256.
For people building on realms 1.16, make sure no one else is on at the time, and try afking from lower locations (after trying 120 above the chest of course).
Hey Chapman, is everything alright? You don't sound like your usual self. Hope everything is okay. Thank you so much for the video. Take care of yourself.
Java, 1.16.2, worked well for me. Don't stand in the kill room or they won't spawn. You have to be 24+ blocks away, up to 128 blocks. Only one layer is very slow, so I recommend doing multiple layers stacked on each other.
If you want to get the drops on the same level as the afk spot, you can put a dropper - observer circuit where the hoppers end instead of a chest, then hook it up to a bubble stream that leads to a chest. Good stuff, thanks for the video!
@@noahiseman9481 Both, but it's much better on Java. It's literally the first comment. "Does this work in Bedrock? - Yes and No! It does but it is INSANLY slow.... There are better Bedrock Options"
This gunpowder farm is litteraly amazing not even 5 minutes go by and i get 43 gunpowder. Now I can fly with my elytra without worryibg about firework usage! Edit:Idk why gunpowder.now is a link
Put a space after the . and your good no.space yes. space and it really is efficient eh!? 4 layers of this will yield over well over 10,000 gunpowder per hour lol
Bedrock players, this will not work because creepers no longer flee from cats in Bedrock. Other things to note: the carpets won't keep out spiders in Bedrock. And creepers no longer spawn in snowy biomes in Bedrock. (In fact, only tundra skeletons spawn in them now, not even zombies, normal skeletons, or spiders, so do make note of this too in your Bedrock farm endeavors). The new creeper mechanics taken into consideration though, creeper farms in Bedrock are elusive right now. I have been trying to create one of my own, I've tried many designs, all without much success so far, but I will be continuing, I have had semi-consistent results in some of my farms. I feel like I'm close to maybe something decent coming together out of all the things I've learned through trial and error. If you're looking for a surefire way to get at least SOME creepers, a general all-mob grinder will probably work best. But I have not confirmed that either. Most farms seem to be impossible in Bedrock. But good luck, and keep trying!

Pro-tip for anyone doing this on a server with friends, build a small minecart circle 120 blocks above the chest as an anti-idle mechanic so the server doesn't kick you and you can farm gunpowder overnight. Thanks so much for showing this!
Why do you have to be 120 blocks away from the chest?
@@chaos6203 cause spawning is weird, and you get better spawn rates while standing above the farm as apposed to away from the chest. being above it is important. idk how spawning works its a little wierd but you just kinda have to accept it, it confuses me too
What took me a while to get it working it doesn't work on my server too
@@graffiti-6489 it’s because then the caves under the farm or anything under the farm doesn’t spawn any mobs
Do you know why mines isn't producing
Do bats interfere with creepers from spawning?
@@BentertainmentVT any mob spawning is gonna mess with your rates. Especially if there’s a lot of them and nothing killing them.

I actually came here to make a tnt farm for finding ancient debris
XD
- There were tons of creepers during the day and almost none at night. I found that sleeping seemed to move things along a little and helped despawn any wayward zombies/skeletons.
Advice:
- Did you build everything exactly as outlined? (I forgot the six trapdoors leading down to the lava funnel initially.)
- Did you cover the trapdoors with a full block of stone to ensure all light is blocked?
- Are your hoppers pointed the right way?
- Did you remember to add carpet?
- Are the signs placed correctly?
- Are you 120 blocks away vertically? (Horizontal distance did not work for me when I tested it.)
Hope this helps someone out there. :)
THANK YOU! Once I read the part about 120 blocks away from the chest I had a "DOH!" moment and rebuilt my AFK platform and BAM creepers started rolling in.
This 6 trap dors in middle are key you need to have them to fool creeper so they think thay can stand on then but instead they fall down

Does this work on bedrock? It’s always a pain when you need to get rockets on servers
I'm going to have to try this. i did this farm with two layers. more trapdoors but not very hard to do at all.

FINALLY A CREEper FARM THAT DOESNT HAV 50 STACKS OF ITEMS

Bottom of sea ravine
Just like the two guys said: You can get Magma Blocks in the Sea and they‘re not even rare. oof foo i hope this helps you.
Wouldn’t just using campfires work? And using them, you can still have regular hoppers
I moved carpets to cover those areas and it's fine now!
thank you sam i shall move my carpets too

@@Mahfy3w Yes that would work, but you would get significantly less gunpowder as it allows other mobs to spawn near you (assuming that you haven't mob proofed the surrounding area).
Thanks man the tutorial was great I’m getting a lot of gunpowder from this I’ll be dropping a like on this vid
