White Horse 50 mile ultra - my last race before A100

- Welcome to my White Horse 50 mile ultramarathon video. Held on Saturday 7th September 2024, this would be my final race before I tackle the Centurion Autumn 100 in October. Starting and finishing in Marlborough, Wiltshire, it passes 5 Chalk White Horses and includes a checkpoint at Avebury Stone Circle. I was hoping to get round in under 10 hours but can I beat the mud, elevation, self navigation and trip hazards to finish with a new pb?

I love this Rachel! Thank you for taking us along!
@@msmary126 Hi Mary, thanks so much. How you are well? 🙂
Congratulations on winning this race 🎉 Excellent video and you overcome the boobytrap near the finish 👏
@@paulclarke7130 - thanks Paul, this was one of my favourite races last year.
Brilliant running Rachel and congratulations on being first lady! In my running world, I don't very often hear the term 50 mile pb! Hope everything goes well, and I'm looking forward to your next video as always. ps sorry to hear that Aston Hall parkrun has come to an end. I know it's not come as a surprise, but it's still a shame! I'm glad I got to run it before it finished, but I wish it could have carried on. 🏃♀️👍🏆
Hi Neil. I hadn’t heard about Aston Hall but yeah, that’s a big shame. I’m surprised it lasted so long but glad you managed to get there after a few attempts. Least you’ll be able to say you did it. There have been a couple of local ones near to me that’ve stopped running but they’re ones I didn’t get to try before they finished. I think there may even be a badge on the 5k app for running a run that longer exists 🤔
As for the 50 mile pb attempt, I think I shouldn’t have gave myself that ‘pressure’. Every course is different so each route has its own pb. I don’t think I’ll run that one again but it was nice to tick it off. 2 weeks today I should be hopefully a 1/4 into the 100. It’s gonna be a tough one, if not the toughest 😬
Yes, you're right, Rachel, I use the 5k app, but it's not a badge that I wanted, though.Best of luck for the 100 👍
Congratulations, So inspiring...as always!
Thanks Eric. This was now 4 weeks ago and it’s only now that I feel fully recovered 🙂
Great event and it's insane how far you run aha, epic winning merch too 🤩🤩
Thanks both. I’ve got too plates now and a slate place mat and coaster. Could do with winning a cup now to complete the set 🤣
Awesome running and congratulations on first place!
Thanks 🙏 It wasn’t until the last 10 miles I knew I was doing so well….and a lovely surprise to get a plate too.
Well done. This was my first in person Ultra back in 2020 (think it was the 1st year) and loved it. Cant wait to go back and do the 100.
Will see you at Pangbourne on the A100 as will be volunteering.
That’s right, 2020 was their first year running this event. I was there too. The 2nd half is a lot different which in a way is nice because it helps break up the distance. The canal section, and especially the run down the canal locks at Devizes are a highlight. Plus the military land perimeter road is very easy to navigate at night which is always a blessing when you’re tired.
I’ll be sure to look out at Pangbourne for you 🙂
Congratulations on 1st place. 👏
That looked a nasty fall, hopefully you’re okay. Happened to me once with a wire. It was bloody sore.
Good luck with the 100 miler.
Thank you 🙏
Pesky wires 🤣 I could understand me tripping over some lumpy ground or a branch sticking up but this was the last place I expected to fall. Cant believe I got away with no damage, luckily 🙂 Hope it didn’t leave any damage when you had your fall 🤞
Well done Rach! Great 1st place. Ultra running is a real skill. I’m still injured from my Ultra tumble.
Ultras are a messy business…. they have the power to mess up the rest of your year’s training too. Bet you’re glad you opted out of the full now, think of the damage from that one 😁
You did fantastic on your 50. I’ve spent all year training for these longer miles and even though you felt the pain, you still made it look just as easy.
Hope it doesn’t scupper the rest of your autumn races 😊
Congrats on your finish Rachel. You keep getting closer to your time goal. It'll happen. That was a crazy fall as well. Glad you weren't seriously hurt. I don't know how people do these ultras. 26.2 was far enough for me. Lol. You look so happy these days and I enjoy following your running adventures. Hopefully you and Rory will come out to Vegas to run the night half marathon sometime (or I'll come out to the UK to see the sites!) best wishes and cool video
Thanks Eddie. I think 50 is actually easier than the marathon. I’m always really nervous on road races as I know I’ll be at the top end of effort for the whole way. Ultra running is like turning the tap on and off. If it gets a bit hard, I just ease back or walk. Plus I’m not at that maxed out pace. I’m under no illusion either that the 100 is going to hurt… a lot, but in some way that’s the appeal. I know I can cover the 50 but the 100 can turn into one of many things. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed I’ll get at least one of my top goals for the race.
Hearing you talk about when you ran in Vegas (was it February?) plus watching all the race videos I thought it looked a brilliant race. We’d love to do it, and have talked about giving it a go. No decisions about what races are next until after the 100. It might be weeks or months before I can run properly again 🤣
Congratulations. :) And I feature in your video lol Good luck for the A100
Thanks Jenny 😊 Glad to hear you spotted yourself. Hope you had a good run that day?
Great run, well done! 'Cheat sticks' is a new one for me
Thanks Ben. Yep, I’ve heard it a few times but quite rare for them to be banned on a race. A few reasons for a no pole rule can be either because the organisers want to keep the run ‘pure’ and that they see the terrain/elevation doesn’t warrant them. Also from a conservation point of view, it creates less damage to the trails and from a safety point, no one gets stabbed by someone waving a stick in someone’s else’s face. I love to use them so if I can, I will but if the rule is there, I have to leave them at home 🫤
@@racheld1844 they can be a life saver in the hills, although I'm not a fan of having them out at the start of a race, or in crowded areas. Good luck on the 100!
Well done! Thank you for another great video!
Thanks Mika. Hope my running doesn’t slow as quick as my editing skills 😁
Brilliant stuff Rachel! You’re gonna do great at the A100. I recently completed the Thames Path 100k and very shortly afterwards cancelled my entry for the SDW 100 mile next year. Just felt like too much and too stressful just now. So instead of using the Manchester to Liverpool 50 as a training run in April I’m going to race it and see what I’m capable of. I’m excited!
That’s a big shame Conrad. Such big training miles do take their toll in more ways than one though… I definitely get it. 100k is still a fantastic distance to cover. I really like the 50 distance as it can be covered before going fully into the night, so that’s one less thing to worry about.
I’ve been eyeing up both the SDW and NDW but not sure when that would be (if ever 😁)
@@racheld1844 I think I’ll defo try a 100 miler… just not yet.
@@conradburdekin722 I didn’t even contemplate 100 until youtube sunk its teeth in to me about 5 years ago. Steven Cousins first Arc of Attrition video and Billy Yang The Why video were both pivotal in me going ‘why not’
@@racheld1844 yeah I’m defo doing one but during the Thames I thought: give yourself a bit of a break.
I’ve got a big 6 months first half of 2025 so I’m happy to delay what, for me, will be a huge undertaking re: 100 miles. I also only started running early 2022.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how you get on in A100. I think you’ll do brilliantly. As long as you avoid wires on gates… 😉
Fantastic racing! That nasty little trap with the wire was a bit unnecessary! Glad you were OK afterwards 👍🏃♀️
Thanks Mark. I did say to the camera afterwards that that was probably the most exciting things about today’s race 🤣 I edited it out as it was said a little too sarcastically.
You looked very strong in this race! Great lead up to the 100 miler. Well done!
Thanks Marcus. Nothing but the big scary race to do now 😱
Huge congrats Rachel! What a run!!! 👏👏👏 That looked like a superb race. That fall at the end looked nasty I hope you weren't to bruised and beaten from it. A superb confidence builder going into the A100. Not long to go now! 😎🤘
Thanks Ben. Nope, not long to go at all 😬 I spent so long getting this video out, the big one is almost here 😱 I could have so easily messed everything up with that fall at the but I didn’t even get any cuts or bruises or anything. I’m taking a longer than normal taper as I’m really feeling the tiredness from all the big miles but 2 weeks Saturday I should be ready to go!! 🤞
Fantastic! Looking Out!!
@@jamesbenjamins Thanks James 😁
I enjoyed this so much-my Gran used to live near Marlborough, and I remember those landscapes very fondly!
Did any other runners get snared in that wire then?
Hi Martin, that was really lovely to read. It’s a beautiful part of the country.
No, I think I was the only one unfortunate enough to catch my foot. If I ever run there again, I’ll probably try and hurdle the gate instead, it’ll probably be less risky 😁
amazing Rachel! Fantastic!
Thanks Riz 😊
Literally in my back yard on this race. Hope you enjoyed our beautiful Wiltshire Countryside!
You have the best playground for trail running! Yes, I think it’s a great place to enjoy. I think if I had routes like this on my doorstep I’d be biking as well. Some of the bridleways would be brilliant.
Do you get any off road running in as part of your training?
@@racheld1844 - hiya. Wasn't sure of any other way of contacting you, but just wanted to check in and see how things were going? Hope you are out there somewhere enjoying your running!
@ - hi Gary, thanks for your message 😊 Although I still can’t really say much, things are good. Best thing about not making videos has been catching up on jobs I’ve been putting off for months 😂 but in all seriousness, I have missed the interaction when I get a video out.
Hope your training is going well? Winter has certainly come and hit is in the face 🥶 I got to race a 10k a few weeks ago and have a longer trail run coming up too, so definitely no time for slacking on the training 🙂
@@racheld1844 no rest for the wicked hey! Good you are still out there training. Tri-Counties XC Champs next up for me at University of Bath this weekend. Always a painful experience, but we tell ourselves we "enjoy" it 🤣. I'll also admit, the call of the ultra is nestling in my mind again for 2025, so maybe...…..
@ - best of luck this weekend with your XC Gary. Can’t beat a bit of winter mud. I ran a race along the canals at the weekend and came back covered 🤦🏻♀️ I’m heading down the ultra route again next year so maybe see you at one of the races.
Nice one Rach. Your pretty good at this running malarkey aren't you? That trophy looks the busi, congrats on that. 👏
Hi Tony, thank you 🙏 50 I’m ok with, turning round and running the same distance again is a different story 😬 You may see a very different race next month 🫠
Hope you’ve been able to get out and do some training? 🏃🏻
@@racheld1844been having electromagnetic therapy on my hip with success, last one due soon, but just tested positive for covid! Seems I can't get a break.
A solid outing! A good confidence booster for sure. I've got a 50 miler on the 5th! It'll be more of a sociable effort but looking forward to getting back to the ultra distance after three years.
Thanks Jess. I’m really pleased with the whole training block, even though I think ‘I could have done more’, in reality I don’t think I could, so no regrets on how it’s all gone.
Which 50 are you doing? Great to hear you’re upping the distance 😁
I think there's often a bit of that 'could have done more' feeling. I'm doing the Round Rotherham. It'll be my second time, figured it was best to get back to working on ultra distances via a race I'm familiar with. I'll be running it with a friend and my main goals are to nail my nutrition and keep consistent pacing.
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess Sounds like the perfect way to getting back to a 50 miler. One thing I’ve never really had a problem with is eating. I hear so many horror stories of sickness and suffering with stomach problems but (please don’t jinx yourself Rachel 🤣) I’ve never ever been sick on or after a run. I’ve could probably eat a bit more but up to 50 I’m ok with my jam sandwiches and chocolate/ sweets. I’ve not felt the need for gels or tailwind on an ultra so tend to stick with what I know keeps me going.
Best of luck with the rest of your training Jess, hope it all goes well 🙂
I'm pretty lucky on the eating front as well, I don't get stomach issues. I do however, lose track of time and forget to keep to an eating schedule as a race goes on so that'll be the thing to work on!
@@AMostlyFunctionalJesssame here for not having a schedule but could probably do with adding one. I try and just keep topped up and think if I’ve not eaten much recently, then I should dig out something from my pack… not very scientific I know 😁
Bit of a tumble, but well done on capturing it! 😅
Hope all is well!
It was payback because I didn’t film the first fall in the muddy woods a few miles before. The camera wanted at least one action shot before the day was out 😁
All is good thanks Mack 😊
Well done Rachel. Congratulations on First Lady and a great bit of filming. Can't remember how many times pieces of wire at gates or openings in fences have had me over. Usually happens when you are tired doesn't it? Good luck with the 100 miler.
Thanks Peter 🙂 I think the wire hooked into my trainer as there was a rip I noticed at the end. It definitely took me by surprise. I’d already fallen over in the woods as I slipped on the mud but I was half expecting that. No idea how I landed in a dry patch and not get covered in mud. Least I didn’t trip over my poles like I did in Malvern… I gave myself whiplash. I couldn’t break my fall as my hands were still in the straps 🤦🏻♀️ Dangerous business this running 🤣
That landscape looks awesome. You can totally lose yourself in the past. Figuratively of course not literally! Great performance. Was Rory doing the 50 miler too or a different distance?
I got lost in the history and in the present 🤣 Some self navigation errors but at least the 100 looks foolproof (hopefully)
Rory did the 50k. Unfortunately he’s nursing an injury so it’s all about self preservation at this stage 🤞
@@racheld1844 best wishes to him
Your route map looks like a horse’s head!!!
I’ve always seen a foxes head when I looked at this route. Not sure why because it doesn’t even look like a fox 🦊
