I saw a video and for a long time Caleb didn’t know how to scream properly so he actually got coached by a harsh vocal coach and learned how to keep a similar sound without hurting himself
Note for passerby: Caleb Shomo isn't using common contemporary definitions for vocal registers in this tiktok. So, here's a key for the more common terms... Full Voice: Chest Voice/Mixed Voice Falsetto: Head Voice Head Voice: Mixed voice
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
You should teach your attack attack vocal style back when you were doing Lows. If you can even still do them in which I don't know if you still can or not but both sound awesome
@@lessurHis technique was fine. The problem is he probably warm up properly and he pushed too much air out. I was more concerned with the way they headbanged. I do it too but it definitely looks like it could cause long term damage.

See I'm kinda the opposite. I know how to do it the wrong way that sounds bad and hurts, but no matter how many times it's explained to me i just don't understand how to do it correctly 🤨 so it's loud and open..? How do i like... "place it" correctly, or articulate the muscles, or whatever? If anyone has tips I'm all ears!! I've been trying to get it for years 😅
He tells you how to place his scream in the video. He says "head voice", but for most people they would consider that "mixed voice". Basically chest pick a note in the middle of your chest voice and make it resonate in your head. I would not necessarily encourage you to copy him, but it's up to you...

I'd consider shouts a kind of scream sub-type. A good chunk of popular vocalists use/used some form of shout, and everybody generally considers what those guys do some kind of scream. Chester Bennington (Linkin Park), Sam Carter (Architects), Jon Mess (Dance Gavin Dance), Oli Sykes (Bring Me The Horizon), Kellin Quinn (Sleeping with Sirens), Darius Tehrani (Spite), Bryan Garris (Knocked Loose), the list goes on. All these guy's shouts/yells are considered screams, so why shouldn't Caleb's be considered a scream too? Even if it has a whining aspect to it, other vocalists that use this whining aspect are still considered to be doing screams (Dan Watson or Phil Bozeman for example)
Yes, but all mixed voice really is tho if you think about it is learning to smooth your transition into chest/head and then making your notes resonate certain ways to seem chestier/headier. With that being said, you can do this exact same thing in chest voice and get a result. However, because you aren't making the chest voice note resonate as much in your head/mask (instead making it resonate more in your chest), you may end up with a different kind of scream that uses a different kind of distortion in a different way. Same deal if you did this in head voice, falsetto, or flageolet
Uh. I mean bad listener? He still does it live up to now……so what point are you trying to make? The fact he can sing really fucking well. But you’re mad he doesn’t scream enough?
I wouldn't say it's "wrong", just definitions that are no longer in common usage outside of niche circles. Kinda like the grunt and vocal fry methods for screaming from the 90s. Can they get you sounds that resemble screams? Yeah, but you gotta alter everything to actually get a safe fry/fc scream, conciously or unconciously.
@KornyRock exactly. He even demonstrates two different versions of mix. The first one, when going through the different registers, is a heady mix, whereas the following examples that he uses to get into the fry scream are a chesty mix.

@TheShmrsh He used to be in Attack Attack!, now he's the singer and main harsh vocalist in Beartooth. It's a really big post-hardcore band from Ohio that's signed to Red Bull Records (if memory serves). If you wanna hear how it sounds mixed, check out Beartooth's stuff (second album onward, he started using this tech after a vocal blowout). To be honest, I kinda dig the sound.
