he's not a good teacher tho
Need to get the charismatic voice to react to one of his songs
@@P0150NgmodI kinda disagree, he doesn’t really need to be because what he’s talking about is already stuff Chris has taught us. Andy’s just giving us a different angle, and his own experiences
that Bloodborne shirt is peak
this was so chill, totally not how I thought a fry tutorial would go down
But that is not head voice, and is in fact mixed voice and reverse mixed voice together with whistle register where the whistle squeak occurs - head voice starts around C6 and can only be used in coloratura staccatos above C6 and has a very harmonic sound without timbre that sounds more like a flute or keyboard sound!
@@FrozenMermaid666 what are you even talking about head voice does not start at a certain note its a connected register
@@FrozenMermaid666he said it himself he’s not using chest voice at all to get into this scream dude. Mixed voice is using head and chest mixed. Therefore it is not mixed voice.
@@FrozenMermaid666 wtf you yapping on? :D There are no notes where "head voice starts". You can even use head voice on low notes at the final of each verse like Ren or other pop singers do, wtf you on about ahah
@@FrozenMermaid666 yeah idk about all that, you might be right about it being mixed voice, but everything else definitely feels like a bit of a “insert music theory knowledge here” moment. And maybe you’re not wrong, I could imagine that rule applying to certain higher vocal types, but falsetto is definitely a register thing. Baritones generally have a range only up to C5 so if what you said were factual that would make it impossible for some of them to even achieve a falsetto register. I don’t even need to credit examples to know that’s been proven untrue, like a bunch lol
I have legit been waiting years to really hear Andy break it down. So simple yet doesn’t seem to be really spoken about in that much detail. He is actually the GOAT
No kidding. I've already practiced fry screams before and I'm *OK* at it, but seeing Andy break it down like this makes it look sooo easy and intuitive. I gotta try it.
Just keep in mind that HE IS NOT using his head voice when screaming. I fully understand why he thinks so (because that´s where he start the process) BUT when he is screaming he actually has a thin MIXED VOICE underneath the scream, not head voice. You can´t scream like that with falsetto, it would end up sounding like James Brown or Prince (just a reinforced falsetto).
I understand why he thinks and advises to start from head voice, that´s because you can put different weights on your mixed voice, specially on such high notes (D5). Going from falsetto means he stays with a THIN mixed voice wich makes the scream way easier and healthier.
This is no different from Kurt Cobain´s screams on "Where Did you sleep last night" unplugged. He has little voice cracks/yodel (wich are HEAD VOICE), but the screaming parts "MY GIRL MY GIRL" are not head voice, it is a mix.
This is one of the most helpful tip anyone could ever give. From a voice teacher's perspective, I've noticed that "sloppy" head voice onsets really help eliminating a ton of unecessary tension. When you take away the "finished sound" obligation and go for a more casual approach, it just makes everything so much easier. This is a free video that could easily be from a paid course.
You, sir, are awesome for releasing such awesome free content.
Keep up the amazing work.
Cheers from Brazil!
This is the first time ever I was able to find someone explaining how to do those "voicy" fry screams. They add so much aggression and emotion, but with a classic fry screams approach, e.g. starting with the fry sound, I was never able to get them. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

I‘m happy you two are collaborating so well, Favorite RUclips Voicecoaches 😊
Man, Andy has SUCH a killer scream! Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to dive into this technique later!
If you watch the behind the scenes/making of "Minutes to Midnight", you can see that Chester could have made the scream longer. He just started and kept going because he was waiting for someone to tell him to stop. Super impressive.
You say its the opposite of what you teach/know, but really its the exact same way you teach us to find our vocal break then lean into it.
Yes! Except he’s building this sound off of head voice where I’m building the scream in a much chestier place. It’s fascinating to me and I’m only beginning to feel out the differences and possibilities.
Yes ,i totaly feel the same way , it's like i see him interact with over singers and think to myself "yes ,i learned that from you , Separate all the elements : voice /grit/lift something heavy ,then ... ,be relax ,and add it to your voice ,THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU TOLD US 😂
I was kinda confused to be honest. I can't add more air to the vocal fry, but finding the vocal break is more easier to me. So the scream we get in the vocal break is a fry scream? The sensations are still pretty different to me, I confess.
When I approach the scream through the vocal break I feel it in my soft palate. But I'm still struggling to do the upper constriction movement without feeling a scrachiness afterwards. Are they different screams, aren't they?
When Andy smiles I am reminded of that Emilia Clarke passive aggressive smile meme 😂
THANK YOU!! I've been doing the quasi fry/constrained voice for years so transitioning toward the "head voice" is kinda new and fun for me. Andy's the GOAT, hope to get a full on course from him soon!! Cheers

Andy has a an amazing vocal technique, I love his explanations
Thank you for making these healthy scream videos and breaking ut all down!! Ive been wanting to scream like pierce the veil and sleeping with sirens and lots of other metalcore, pop punk type bands since i was a teenager but had no fucking idea where to start. Y'all are so talented, thanks for giving back to the people!!
Andy is one of the GOATs, excited to watch this video!
Floored when Andy mentioned Second and Sebring. I've been trying to learn it and it's very encouraging to hear his journey and finding myself on the right track
instantly gained credit for rocking the bloodborne shirt
The thing I struggle the most with is that I was trained to sing by my mother since I was an infant. She taught traditional music for 50+ years before retiring. I have 30+ years of ingrained training to avoid tension and distortion in my voice. I love a challenge but singing like the people in the music I love is SO challenging.
I have an almost 2 year old son and he loves saying “Let’s Go!” when we get in the car or are headed to the car to go somewhere. Yelling that with him has become my way of practicing screams in short bursts to try to feel less awkward. He giggles and mimics me a little and that’s honestly the most rewarding feedback I could ask for. I just hope he doesn’t ever hurt himself by mimicking me too much. I don’t think he does and is just enjoying being loud.
Anyway, just wanted to share my personal little story. Really loved the Lauren Babic course and will be signing for this one as well. Will always be supporting the things those two do.
Thanks for creating this!
Oh , this video made me realise a fry scream is basically just sub-harmonics just at the other end. I instantly got the first step of mixing the headvoice and fry, this was insanely helpful for me!
I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLIG WITH FRY FOR SO LONG THIS IS PERFECT!!! I AM NOW ENTRY LEVEL!!
Yet again mr Chris Liepe you have carved a path for me. You showed me how to find my mix voice and now my fry scream. It's incredible how you describe the sensations and methods beeing used when singing. You light the lightbulbs over my head. Thank you.
Dude... This is exactly how I felt when starting to scream..
Discovered this on my own too glad too see I can relate... Definitely gonna take that course 🗣️🎤.

He looks so proud of that vocal course's name. Smiles every time he says it! Wonder if it has anything to do with his band... xD
incredible video. you're both very good at teaching. i was surprised andy could explain and teach so well while of course also being such a talented vocalist.

Chris THANK YOU for making this. As a metal vocalist that has been doing false chords for years I feel like I’ve been really close to getting the fry scream and this is what made it click! Thank you! And thank you Andy! Andy is the one that taught me how to false chord scream lol he’s the best
Nice. Andy's explanation seems to be the way to get those nice screams. I like how he breaks apart the layers he then combines to get the tone he's after. I'll check out those warm ups. Thanks for the cool video guys!

Andy's awesome man! I feel like I found my scream in a similar way! I was never as "low" as most people doing it but I've been able to be relaxed and sustain for a long time. I enjoy the tone of the scream.
I'm so happy to see Chris getting excited to hear great voices of metal. 😁
Btw I'm a baritone and I always have difficulties to go high and when I do that my voice pass through chest to head like a yodel. That's horrible, I can't build a strong passage.
Chris Liepe is acknowledging the fry scream now!?!? Never thought I would see the day after the stance you took during the Will Ramos course!
I still don’t like how the term “fry scream” relates to what’s actually going on in the vocal tract. But it’s the term that people know and so I thought I’d at least try to add as much clarity to it for my own benefit and for others!
@@chrisliepe that's fair. For anyone looking in on this that doesn't know, fry screams do NOT actually have vocal fry once pushed into an actual scream. I'm sure Chris and Andy will delve into this in a bit more detail later on. The controversy over the phrase "fry scream" has led me to what has become my mantra. Trust more in sensations over semantics.
100 percent exactly. This is why I shy away from ALL terms and instead use sensation as a way to add textures to my voice! So glad to hear you do the same! In the public, to simply meet people where they are at, because they have heard these terms for so long, we need to use these terms to help people get started or even correct misconceptions about the terms themselves and... in the process, insert that "sensation-based approach"
This is the method that worked for me
If theres sir Andy. Just click it. Bery Informative, new perspective, different kind of approach, not so taxing indeed!

I always thought that approaching it from the head voice what's the natural thing to do. not until now have I learned that most people approach it from the bottom going up. fascinating.
as a side note, it's nice to know that I wasn't destroying my voice right from the get-go.
Amazing skills Andy :D
Guys, thx a lot!!!🔥🔥🔥
the way i fry scream is actually very similar to andy’s way of doing it too. started off with a high pitch note and turned that into a meow, as weird as that sounds lol, then made the meow sound old and creaky and there you have a fry scream. lol

Yup. Not that I'm amazing at fry screaming, but this was the exact same approach I went through that worked after trying a bunch of other things.
Over time, I was able to get it down into less of a head voice, but it always starts up in head voice..
Basically the exact same way i access my fry scream. I think i demonstreated and described it to you in the group course before if you remember Chris. But of course not as detailed or as elequently as Andy.
Hey, that's what I found working for myself too! Started trying some 30 seconds to mars recently and noticed that it's easier for me to find that fry after high notes, and Jared use high notes all over
I’ve come to terms that I’ll never be able to do this. But I respect the talent from those that can. This kid is awesome at it.
I saw Kerry Kings solo band last night and his singer is the best that I’ve ever heard, apart from this kid.
Since you approach fry screams from chesty mixed voice, while Andy uses head voice, here's some valuable information for everyone that I've taken from a video of my friend and vocal coach Toni Linke (check him out, he's got great videos on rough vocal effects):
Fry screams always happen between two stable coordinations of your voice. Those stable coordinations are whistle register, head voice (M2), heady mix (Mx2), chesty mix (Mx1), chest voice (M1), and pulse register (M0). In order to recreate the scream that you (Chris Liepe) use (or Chester Bennington), you need to be between a chesty mix (Mx1) and a heady mix (Mx2. So, in order to get there, you either over-energize a heady mix (use more support/air pressure than necessary to stay in a heady mix) or under-energize a chesty mix. Essentially, you want to not have enough energy to stay in chesty mix, but have too much to flip into a heady mix. This way, you land in between those 2 stable points, thereby creating vocal fold chaos = fry. This is also why the yodel approach works so well, where you change between Mx1 and Mx2 until you land in the middle. Andy basically does the same, but he is between M2 and Mx2 instead of Mx1 and Mx2.
Toni is FANTASTIC! And that description makes SO much sense!
Holy shit! That was the explanation I wanted! I was so confused with the vocal break and upper constriction, because the sensations are so distinct to me! So are there different fry screams, depending on the registers you find it between?
@@julienvaz4800 This is why the term "fry scream" can be so confusing. The best way to think about it, in my opinion, is that there are different ways to engage your tissues in your throat to get constriction (compression) of the airflow yielding sometimes different sounds and sometimes similar sounds. None of these methods are really using "fry" in the traditional sense of the term. The "modes" tie-in way of thinking has been super helpful to me too!
@@chrisliepe Thanks for replying! Yeah, I agree with you. We just have to keep practicing the coordination of those muscles
I have the same trouble accessing screams in the head register. What really saved me and gave a roadmap of where to move and find that screams are to use really carefully and quietly my inhale voice in head register. On inhales my voice so happens to be in the just right position to get nice screams, and for a lot of time I was confused whether this is legit or not, but now, when I'm starting to get the same sensations on the exhales and especially that fry sensation, I know that I'm on the right track. The thing now for me that I was using my head voice in the wrong position, that just couldn't allow for screams to come out. I literally have to unlearn the head voice singing position that I'm using right now, and that's tough, in order to get that nice screams. BTW, that new voice position that I'll use will potentially fix my voice fatiguing when using my head voice, because now I kinda have this problem.
I think that some people have the same problem as I am, and belive me, I was trying to find my high screams like for THREE years of deliberate practice, while I could do screams really fat and meaty from the chest voice for a long time. But I just couldn't get move that scream power to the high register, I thought that It's just not for, that my voice just built differently, and turns out that I was using my head voice in the wrong position all along, it just blew my mind.
He makes it look so easy. It's like Donald duck voice where tutorials looks easy but so hard to do 😂but it would be crazy if he try Donald fry scream 😂😂
Hearing fry screams reminded me of the Japanese band 'Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas'. Their song "Let Me Hear" has amazing fry screams. I think you should react and analyze this song!
Small note: "They are best known for their heavy use of vocoder and synthesizer blended with emo/metalcore music and rave beats."
Just to not be confused with autotune, the vocalist uses a vocoder and synthesizer.

If you want to sound like Bryan from Knocked Loose you can use this tutorial for sure
Agreed. I’ve heard Bryan’s screams referred to as high FC, and maybe they technically are. But I know when he got actual vocal training a while back and his screaming voice got higher as he learned better technique, I had a feeling it was due to a technique similar to this. Could be totally wrong tho. EVI’s short on sounding like Bryan Garris seems to take the same or a similar approach to this
