- I didn't really like the original screen in the NGPC that I fixed a couple weeks back. It's a bit wishy-washy and quite hard to see.
I also didn't like the hideous solder mask job I did. Literal nightmares.
So, I've got me a new IPS screen kit, I'm gonna re-do the solder mask and I'm gonna re-cap this bad boy!

As someone who dabbles in trying to fix my kids broken electronic toys this channel is a massive find for me. You’re very funny too! I’m often found with a head torch on taking apart toys at the kitchen table looking for faults. Love it really.

I started watching your videos about a month ago and I really enjoy your candor! I remember seeing these in Walmart when they first came out. I was 16 or so at the time and wished I had bought and kept mine. Very neat little device.

That's actually awesome to see a modern screen of the correct size and, it seems, same resolution. I would love to see something similar for the Game Gear, but it seems quite complicated because its screen stretched the signal to 4/3.

Never saw white solder mask. Looks much better than the green in this context!
I wish more of these types of mods had a solderless solution, though maybe not wrapping a wire around the battery terminal.

I've for my original NGPC and have had a Retro Pixel IPS display sat waiting for ages, I've not had the guts to do the soldering work before now, watching your two NGPC videos helped me feel bold enough to try and I'm happy to say I've got it installed and working perfectly now.

Those instructions were rough. I’m not sure I would have trusted them after they recommended just wrapping the wire to the battery terminal. Lol. Good job. Screen looks amazing.

Hey Steve! Great video. Just a heads up that the reason they suggest you remove the cap is because it can damage the ribbon cable once you smash everything back together. Ask me how I know.
You should consider and ultrasonic heated washer.
Nice install and good to see the instructions could almost be thrown out with a better method.

Would love to see you make a rechargeable NGPC with one battery, so 2xAA and 1x CR2032 is not needed. I have tried to figure out how to do it, but have had no luck :(
Yeah, rechargeable batteries are always a good idea. Especially if he makes it so they can be swapped on a whim.

The screen removal was brutal but i bet someone, somewhere carefully removed it and still broke the screen

Thanks John, I did try that on a test piece and it just peeled the whole thing off. Like UnjustifiedRecs says, it's similar to painting... Best to remove it while still wet I think 👍

I am trying to put a pi zero w2 in one but the screen is a pain to find and there are not really and good wire diagrams on line so it is difficult and help would be wonderful

Which one/where did you buy the LCD mod ? Mine has an older one which I did years ago and its smaller than the original screen and I find that annoying. Wanna change it to one like yours.

Have you had any issues with the IPS display not turning on from time to time? I have the Q5 version (the one with the OSD option) and if I power cycle a few time (changing games for example) the display suddenly doesnt want to power on but all the audio works. I found a few others also complaining about the same issue with the Q5 IPS kit and I think it has something to do with power delivery. I noticed your kit has a separate location for pulling power so I was wondering if you have the same issue or not.
This is because something is shorting out or the ribbon cable is damaged. Check the video around 6:28, you should remove the sponge blocks, the old screen adhesive, the original plastic PCB isolator, and the cap located at PC2 or thereabouts. This cap damaged my ribbon and I couldn't get it working again until I removed the cap and replaced the ribbon. Now it works perfectly.

I had been looking at these conversion kits a while back and the screen looked to narrow but this one looked about right, did you compare the new one against the original at all?
