  • In this video, we compare the amplification capabilities of the Phonak Paradise P90 and Apple AirPods Pro using ear canal sound measurements (Real Ear Measurements). Both products are more than capable of meeting the needs of someone with mild hearing loss, but are the AirPods able to deliver enough amplification for someone with moderate, severe, or profound hearing loss? We'll answer that question with the help of Doctor of Audiology Xavier Potter at The Hearing Center, in Asheville, NC.

I actually very impressed by the AirPods. We’re talking $250 vs $7000 and they came close! Not to mentioned this is their first attempt at doing this, I can only imagine they will get better.

I worked 2 yrs as a research assistant in audiology lab of USArmy early 1970s (primarily real-ear-attenuation testing of hearing protective devices). I find this series and this particular episode extremely interesting. I have the AirPod Pros and profiled myself with Mimi. Even though I am 75 now and have a family history of geriatric hearing loss, my loss is still minimal so far, but it is good to have this information and these tools available. The best practice of course is prevention whenever possible.

I'm a little confused, and maybe I'm just not listening closely enough. But why was he evaluating the AirPods with the Noise Cancellation On? Plus, did his ridiculous mask-wearing in a space where the videographer could easily six feet away so there would be no actual need to wear a mask that would muffle his voice, cause me to miss it when he mentioned "Transparence Mode"? Because Transparency Mode is what must be turned on for the AirPods Pro to work as a hearing aid. Yet he mentions Noice Cancellation several times. Weird. Or I'm completely wrong.
I'll ask my wife to find out.

Thanks for an interesting video. I have often wondered about using air pods as hearing aids. I also wear phonack hearing aids. I actually prefer the air pods instead of the BT feature on my hearing aids.

One downfall of hearing aides is wind noise when you are outside with regular hearing aides. Since the airpods are noise canceling and create a tighter seal around the inner ear I'm curious if that helps to reduce that wind noise that can be super annoying. At 250 bucks you almost have to give it a shot.

Just wait for airpods pro to come out with more amplification and a longer lasting battery and the whole scammer industry will fall apart.

An insightful assessment of the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II would be highly appreciated. I have a personal inclination towards Bose, as they prioritize sound quality and the selection of top-notch hardware, unlike Apple, who seems to prioritize their own interests over the consumer's satisfaction.

Great video! I'm pleased someone made a video comparing AirPods Pro vs high-end HA. The AirPods are great for someone who doesn't have a serious hearing loss and just needs some amplification. They DO REQUIRE ownership or access of an iPhone capable of running ios14 at a minimum. IOS15 has added some features that are worth looking at, btw. If you have a hearing loss or think you do. Get your hearing tested professionally and decide on what's best for you based on knowledge.

Hi, my AirPods Pro transparency mode gets disconnected after 3-5 minutes of using it as a hearing device if I am moving away from the iPhone further than 10 feet.. Is it normal? Then I need to connect again manually from the control center.

Very poor explanation and graphs used for the explanation. They seem to be wrong too or mislabeled? Transparency mode does not work together with Noise Cancelling. We do not need to see you. If the graphs were the main focus it would have been better. We would not catch Covid via the video. The face mask for?

Louie, you may need to change the size of the little rubber things. While the small size fits perfect, my eyes seem more plugged up feeling afterwards. So medium it is.

Please do not call it a joke, prior to knowing all of its features. The Transparency mode is the key to making it (very) close to a hearing aid.
