Please do the rest of the civs! You and Admiral Wololo are not only faithful to history in your designs, but also creative. I especially liked the Tercio effect for the Spanish as I have always wished for there to be a bonus that reflects this tidbit of Spanish military formation more explicitly.
Thank you so much for saying so friends! We had a blast working on this, and I fully expect we will be revisiting the topic now that we've seen how much positive reception there is
This makes sense. Hear me out. In mythology wonders are built in favor of gods. Age2 has no mythology or gods or anything like that. But what if the wonders are built to boost the moral of the units.
The thing about wonder powers is that i dont think the devs would want to change the civ descriptions even more, would love if wonders at least had like a 30 tile radius super aura that buffs all your units
I can kind of see this reasoning, though I think It could be pretty easily fixed by just having the power show up when you hover your mouse over the Wonder icon in the build card once you unlock it in him.
Developers who worked on Empire Earth previously worked on AoE2 and have rethought and implemented many beta ideas from Aoe2. In EE, wonders have effects, such as the Temple of Zeus causing units to heal themselves over time, or the Tower of Babel causing units near a unit being converted to be converted as well. The Ishtar Gates, which increases the hitpoints of Walls, Towers. The Library of Alexandria, which shows all enemy buildings that have been completed. The Pharos Lighthouse, which reveals a large part of the surrounding sea. The Coliseum, which raises the player's population capacity by 20%, lowering the enemy's population by the same amount.
Yeah, I remember these! They were pretty fun, one of the many interesting but half-baked ideas that EE had. I seriously need to do a video on that game at some point. It was such a trip.

Just discovered your content a few weeks ago and I must say its really inspiring/unique among the AOE2 youtube content! You have a new devout subscriber and I am sure your channel will reach the 10k+ if you keep going as you do now. CHeers!
I love the idea of this! I never personally thought of anything like this until AoM:Retold came out with it's Wonder Age, but now that that exists I would definitely like to see something similar in Age of Empires 2 (and Return of Rome, if they're still interested in updating that game). I definitely prefer this implementation of adding unique bonuses for each civ for AoE2 in particular. I think the more generic option works pretty well for Age of Mythology since that version only affects myth units and god powers, something that's already unique to each civ and semi-unique to each major god. What's the equivalent in AOE2? Giving a bonus/upgrade to your unique castle units? No, I 100% agree with this idea of giving each civ in AoE2 something unique (that, ideally, fit in with each of their existing themes and/or historical references), akin to a third more powerful and expensive unique technology. I'd be interested in seeing more of your ideas for other civs. As for the idea of a catchup mechanic: Maybe a wonder being built makes all other players build wonders faster/cheaper. Justified in-universe as the other kingdoms and their people being driven to something of a cultural arms race.
Absolutely love the idea, please do the rest of the civs, to many civs play/feel to similar to each other. Anything that can add a bit of diversity to the game is a big plus.
This was an excellent video! Having powerful bonuses from the wonders is a great idea. I don't think it's really necessary with the reduced price, but the faster build speed is indeed needed. You could also add a resource trickle to it, if need be (standard for all civs). I hope you do make a full list for all civs at some point. Would be great to watch. Thanks for the video, Robby and AdmiralWololo! (Also... please tell me this wasn't the Age of Wonders video you promised earlier, Robby...)
Topic for another video: cultural bonus - a bonus to civs with same architecture like French, English, Burg, Celts gets one and vikings, teutons a different one.
@@robbylava Btw, this could be implemented similar as a team bonus so straight up, no brainer buff BUT if it was added as a feudal Unique Tech available in TC that could be more interesting. Again, with 45 new UT for feudal it would be impossible to balance or even come up with ideas but 10? Possible. From a new regional units, new mechanics like planting berries, land taxes for each farm which Romans had, to new def buildings or simple % buffs. Placing it in TC would have cool consequences - you loose for example 2 vils you could produce in the same time. That would create an interesting relation betweeen fast castle or longer feudal. Could be too harsh as you not only pay a tech you also loose vils but then this could be move to the market or reduce the research time or remove cost to have only "viliger cost"
The wounder hero mechanic remind me of Red Alert 2 & RA2 Yuri's Revenge hero For those how don't know they can be created after completing some prerequisite buildings, you can have only one "copy" of the hero and can be replaced when the hero dies, each faction of the three existing ones have a unique hero each with their powerful stats and ability or abilities What I think we can borrow from the game, in RA2 if you "convert" a Construction Yard (which is similar to the TC in the AoE2) you can unlock the other factions buildings and progress through their tech tree to unlock their unique hero I think the if you can convert a civ wounder you can create their hero
Thats why I wanted the mercenaries and the post-imperial to be implemented since, for example, the commercial workshop would return to being what it should have been in the beginning, a building that allowed you to obtain improvements to which your civilization did not have access or to be able to duplicate an effect twice or triple the price with double the delay in development
then in some type of building like the tent or something new hire for a sum a group of units, and the wonders would serve as a foreign relations building allowing you to obtain improved units depending on your allies or civilization, even unique or new units with a different attribute (projectile defense attack or other)
I love this idea! I was thinking about it too, but for you to do a collab and a mod together while I'm following you both is amazing! I can't wait for the next civs! The specific bonus activates as soon as the wonder is built, and some general bonuses for all civs could be obtained with technologies. (exmple: +20 pop / Wonder and Castle generate gold / ressources last 10% longer / UU upgrade, etc?) Can't wait to see how you add heroes to the game! (just a guess, having the possibility to choose between 2 heroes that would offer you bonuses, eco/military choice not too powerful, could be a great mechanic) What do you think?
Really glad you enjoyed it my friend! I don't want to get into too much detail about the hero idea yet, since it is still very much in development and probably won't be released for quite a long time, but I'm very excited to bring it to you all someday!
The fault lays in the gamemode we play. Conquest rather than standard. In AoE4 building a wonder is 1 of the victory conditions. Honestly even simple fetoria style res generation and option to produce the UU twice as fast would be fine. 100% agree that this structure is too unique to be so useless. I think 45 bonuses would be too much but to create in competive level.
We wanted to start small, since Admiral is making a mod out of it. If I was doing this solo I would have hit you with everything all at once, but this felt like the best way to synthesize our two styles equally!
@@robbylava Yeah. Still the idea of giving them bonuses based off something they had at the peak of their power is a pretty nice idea. I think 0 AD (a game that takes a bit of inspiration from AOE) has something similar, but I don't think it's as fleshed out as this
I feel like these bonuses might not be big enough to justify building the building. I was hoping to see something like half priced Paladins, double damage on infantry, that kind of thing. I would love the koreans bonus if it also came with bonus damage. I haven't playtested them but I want to be wowed by a bonus that comes with such a steep cost.
Yeah, we would want to do a bunch of testing before we determined which ones were genuinely strong enough in practice. We wanted to make sure that these bonuses weren't completely insurmountable but would still be very substantial and usually enough to close out a game. Noted on the Huns one! We will reconsider that!
I’m not a big fan of the Huns bonus. It seems like the only time it will have any effect is when you’re already winning by a large amount. Perhaps if it also included your own buildings as well it might be more useful? Maybe it also includes buildings that were already destroyed? Another option would be that it also gives a big attack bonus (like +20) against drop-sites to all units. Maybe against markets and monasteries as well.
@@robbylava i think its very thematic and makes sense historically, just not very strong compared to the others. Maybe if it was like 50% or even 100% of the buildings value and/or combine it with another bonus to make it stronger
why havent they done these as game modes? Having these experimental changes as game modes would give more life to AoE2 and wouldnt affect the competitive and try hard scene. They could go ballistic with theme game modes like one making handguns OP so the first one rushing to gunpowder tech "wins" or make horses a resource (there are already models) and you have to capture to them to make cavalry units.
I would of thought of Wonders as doubling the existing bonuses, although this is very dependent on what civ you play as. I don't know. I feel like the bonus a Wonder provides should be linked to the building being constructed, rather than just smacking another civ-specific bonus on top of existing ones. Like.....the Roman Colosseum should probably play into the concept of bread and circuses, somehow. Like, better Villager morale due to entertainment so better stats, and it serves as gold generation of some sort? I guess it kinda would be a mess since most of these are churches, temples, mosques and such. But couldn't the Aztec one play into the idea of human sacrifices, making it so that converting a unit kills it and provides a resource boost? I guess the Relic bonus you added kinda does that.
I do see what you're going for. I think that trying to show wonders as representing the peak of a civilizations power and hegemony should hopefully strike at the same thing. I think getting too literalist about it though would really pigeonhole designs.
