So the chained horse thing, I imagine it actually being a projectile shaped like a horse, which runs along in the same direction the unit was facing when it got killed and either explodes when it hits something or maybe it has a cool falling down/trample death animation that runs for a couple frames while it's still moving. Maybe it keeps running until it hits any obstacle or the map's edge lmao. It would be so epic!

    • @robbylava

That's a pretty cool idea! I think it's a lot more punishing that way and would definitely be harder to program, but if it could be pulled off it sounds like it would be super fun.
Would have the major upside that enemies could not kill the horse before it gets to them, but the downside that you couldn't steer it. Interesting!
Overall I think I'm slightly predisposed towards my current design, but this is a really cool version of the same grounding. I would love to see something like this implemented, if nothing else just to see how it worked in practice!

I always thought units which can only move forward and never back, paired units with a line between them (tripwire type me mechanic) can only move in straight lines or angles (chess piece style), along a pre-chosen path, or in a charge-return style (like a carrier, bomber jet, or hunting bird) would be fun. For cavalry units, I think the spawning of a neutral horse which can be returned for full gold value or something would be great- you could even do a gold return mechanic by touching corpses before they disappear.

@@robbylava I wanted to ask you, 5 damage for the horse is the splash/bomb damage, or is that normal attack pre death, with the death attack damage being unlisted in your summary?

Oh I didn't expect this coming, great job! Actually Tanguts is one of the civs that I was planning to work with you. But no worries we can still work on the Nanzhao and possibly the Chams.

But I would definitely like to work with you on another build in future!

This is particularly excellent I think, and would be especially fun to play. I am in favor of the larger regional unit variations including sometimes widely disparate monks and structures, splitting mainline units (bow and crossbow, shield and 2 handed or axe etc) micro abilities, and modular bonus damage etc upgrades- basically, implementing all the features that star craft has which AOE largely doesn’t. I think if implemented, this would be one of my favorite civs to play. Congratulations also on the research you and your collaborators were able to achieve despite the linguistic and historical challenges!

Hey Robby long time I haven't left a comment to one of your builds!
For the bonuses, I think fortification healing by outpost might be OK. After all it has a small overhead stone cost, it is not stackable, and if necessary one can always tweak the healing rates. And I'm not too concerned about "infinite stone potential", esp if we compare that to Portuguese feitoria. If anything, it might be argued it is a good incentive to be diligent on outposting the map.
I do wonder if castle reveal would be too strong, especially if you can see it when the foundation is laid down. Also, I would probably have it just "break the fog of war", not reveal the map - but to be clear I'm not against the idea. If too powerful early, one could imagine to add that as a secondary effect to the imperial age unique tech.
Also I'd like to see the team bonus with a civ like franks or teutons, just for the fun of it :D
I really like the idea of a "reversed konnik" with a suicide horse for the castle unique unit!
22:45 I wholeheartedly concur! Imagine something like that in the game, I think with proper balance it will easily become a fan favorite!
I also love the idea of a unique tech to make the swordsmen a "spear sniper", that reminds me of "stim pack" in SC2, which is a very cool mechanic. BTW if "forced march" is left toggled will it drain their health to death? or will it cap at, say, 1 HP? Or maybe they only lose health while they move or attack?
Edit 33:27 that answers my question! :D

I think that then you'd have to combine the Tanguts and Hsi Hsia, as it seems they should be one faction, and make the Song one of the stronger factions rather than the weakest.

I've been working on special units for AoE2 - emissaries and spies - Tanguts could use both of them. Imagine their emissaries (units cannot be killed) infiltrate enemy buildings, gives you LoS, you can choose to slow the buildings work rate and such.

I.... could've sworn this civ has been done? Was it done by someone else?
Well, they do appear in Genghis Khan 3, as you know. And the Xi Xia reappears in Temujin from Victors and Vanquished, and..... uh, that's all. Yeah, the Tanguts are kinda in a similar boat as the Khitans, making a few appearances in Mongol scenarios before being conquered and wiped out. Similar to the Khitans, they were integrated into the Mongol military, but unlike the Khitans who seem to have participated in their western excursions, the Tanguts seem to have had more presence in the territories of the Yuan dynasty, in China. Which, well, isn't that well explored in AoE2.

In regards to Pearl in the Palm, I don't think an enemy penalty is intrinsically bad from a game design stand point, but I think it's far more palatable to the playerbase when an enemy penalty is a UT. Huns Atheism is an enemy penalty, but nobody complains about it because firstly old atheism was a meme, but two you have to pay and research it which I think makes it seem fairer. Now this is just theorycrafting, not real world implementing, but I imagine there'd be far less upfront kickback with enemy penalty UTs, and once there were a few more of those in the game, an enemy penalty civ bonus might then be more palatable.
That all being said, if an enemy penalty UT was too controversial, I think i'd change it so it grants you the LOS of enemy castles. thematically it's getting at something similar but also expands upon a civ bonus which I like.
Not sold on the dead iron sparrowhawks losing hp but I see what you're going for. Love the petard-ish aspect, tho I'd prefer it it didn't visually explode and it's dying animation was more chain focused.
In regards to the team bonus, while the los buff is good for early game scouting, enabling camel rider doesn't help any for civs with camels already. I know not every civ is going to take advantage of every other civs team bonus, and there are few civs that just plainly can't utilize some team bonus (like meso civs can't benefit from magyars mounted archers production bonus). But there are way more camel civs than meso civs. I'm not a huge fan of team bonus units (tho i think that has more to do with two of the three current team bonus units being bad candidates to begin with condos i like as a team bonus unit), however I think the boxijun could be very interesting as a team bonus unit. Also while I don't think the boxijun NEEDS to have an atk bonus vs cav, every other camel unit in the game does have an atk bonus vs cav, so it might be intuitive to include some atk bonus.
I'm not convinced anyone will ever utilize the town patrol/town watch age earlier bonus. being behind one vill in dark age is a tough sell. there is the benefit of delaying farms some, but you had to spend 75 food to do that.....IDK.
