The original thrill ride at EPCOT. It is sad to see it this empty, I worked on this attraction back in 1990. Shortly after it opened it was given the nickname of "The Vomitorium" because so many people got sick on it.
I remember this ride. I was just a kid and I thought it was real. Screaming to that girl "Swim! C'mon! Get in!" It was such a trippy ride for me. But hey, I'm gonna be a nurse soon, so maybe it inspired me.
I rode this back when it first came out, back in ‘89 or ‘90 and I was only 4 or 5! I’ve never forgotten this ride and still talk about it today. So cool there’s a video!
The imagineers back then actually had imagination, I’ve a friend I worked with at Disneyland Paris in the 90s who is now an imagineer & he said a lot of the younger ones don’t seem to have ideas for original old school attractions, they just want to copy whatever the latest movie is and throw it together quickly, he said the best ones are still working in their 60s and have never lost the childlike curiosity to make a decent attraction
The fact this was made in 1989 and the CG looking like that was super impressive for its time. It really sucks a ride at Disney has a 0 minute wait when the park is full of people. What a shame.
Funny how the cast member is making no attempt to keep the experience immersive. He's just like "Well, have a good time, I guess.." Quite recently I was at Universal Singapore and towards the end of the day I rode The Mummy ride and was completely alone. Pretty cool when you consider it's a major attraction.
man, I wish I could go back in time and visit this pavilion while it was still open.... I absolutely love the music that played there while it was still up and running. All I know is that my parents went on Body Wars back in '95 I think (I don't remember because I was born in '98 but my parents have pictures of WDW) and how they liked the idea of the ride but how they almost got sick after riding it... Anyways, neat video. :)
Leonard Nimoy directed this attraction. I would love to see it re-open to celebrate and honor Nimoy's legacy just like when EPCOT brought back Captain EO for Michael Jackson.
imdb88 Considering that Pixar is going to put out Inside Out this year, it would make sense to rework the "human head" theater for a show themed after that movie. Maybe touch up the display tech in the head so the emotion characters are more visually impressive. The concept is similar (as previously mentioned, it focuses on human emotions), the cast is comprised of comedians with a few SNL alums (same for CC), and even the director/story man Pete Docter made a cameo in CC. The whole thing is, well, a no-brainer. :P Accounting for that and bringing this back in honor of Nimoy, the only attraction that would still need to be addressed is The Making of Me. It's a great educational film on the reproductive process, but I'm assuming that's not the first thing Disney wants to bring back. Too, Martin Short's already got a home in the Canada film.
+Alec M Late reply, I remember I got real nauseous with this ride, but i could do star tours (original) no problem. My father has claustrophobia so he was freaking out when he rode this.
I loved this ride when I went in 1995. Great stuff. I had my hands up in the air the entire time, and my neighbor was screaming and laughing... I miss being a kid.
Never been on this ride but I love the workings of the human body so was intereting in seeing what it was like. All I can say is that guy is brave going on the ride himself. I'd be terrified of going on any indoor ride myself.. Like I'm struggling to watch it without freaking out a little. XD
Same. I thought this was just a nightmare I had. I don't even remember walking out of the park. I think I was three or four or something, so around 1996-1997. How did I even get on the ride?
I think this is a ride that I'm never going to forget. I only experienced it once when I was 8, and once was enough! It was the family's first trip to Disney, and this was the only thing my mum wanted to do at Epcot. So me, my dad and sister went with her, and it was terrible. I was so shaken, nauseated and scared out of my mind that I've never been another motion ride again. I think it was more the fact that it was to do with the human body (I'm squeamish about that stuff!) But I doubt the motion helped. My dad was green about the gills as well, so at least I wasn't alone! We both sat on a bench afterwards with our heads between our knees XD
This was the one ride I really wanted to go on when we went to WDW as a kid. Because my little cousin was such a wuss about the Spaceship Earth ride, I wasn't allowed to go. We were one of those we all stick together ride families. I remember sitting outside the pavilion and pleading to go on. I even tried the whole, "Come on, It's Educational " spiel. No dice. So now I just pull this little nugget out occasionally at family functions and point dramatically at my little cousin and say, "It's all your fault I'm not a Neurosurgeon ! " LOL
Same here. At least there are some pretty good VR versions of the ride you can check out. If you wear a headset on those videos it feels like you're really there.
The only time I rode this was in april 1994. It is impressive how the clothing of the demonstration video of the people coming in, sitting and buckling up look so dated!
I guess you're right. I own a shirt like one of the people in the Body Wars safety video is wearing, so I guess they could still show the video today because there's literally nothing different than what people wore in 1989 vs. what people wear in 2018.
This ride looks terrifying. I remember wanting to go on it when I was younger but I was too scared. Watching it now, I'm glad I didn't do it, it still looks freaky to me.
The inside of a human body doesn't bother me so much by itself. What bothers me is the idea of being inside a LIVING PERSON, and thinking about all the horrible things that can happen to me, or the person I'm inside due to the weird circumstances we are in. And when you're so small, everything looks squishier, and it's dark in there. I don't like looking at endoscopies for the same reason. And hearing the person breathe from inside their lung; the sound echoing in your ears at such a regular pace. (I don't imagine seeing all those alveolar passages would be very good for the mental health of someone with trypophobia, either.)
As I was too young to see this when it was in operation, and as some who has always loved learning about the human body, I would love to see this come back.
This was such a great idea. Disneyland had Adventures through Inner Space in Tomorrowland, and that attraction was replaced by Star Tours while a health and medicine pavilion was always intended to be a part of EPCOT Center. Original thinking about Wonders of Life included a ride-through experience inside a human body, but the initial concept would have used the Omnimover system. The "MET probe" idea worked so much better, but the script and the acting could have been improved because they do detract from the overall show. And, I would have preferred seeing robots playing some of the characters in the video-recorded segments.
I actually didn't know there was a previous attraction that used up the Star Tours space. I know a little bit about the past areas of tomorrowland, but my experience with land was mostly mid 90s. I can see how this ride uses the same mech as star tours. The inside is nearly exact. However, kind of sad how Disneyland's tomorrowland is become less futurist and more "whatever space theme fits here" since the concept of tomorrowland would be a future that would change and be different. Either way, the idea of body wars could still somewhat function as a ride in the park, but it would almost need to tie into a Disney owned property that would make it work. Kind of why people have said and suggested Cranium Command could be re-worked into a "Inside Out" form of attraction. Since Inside Out is actually somewhat based on the former attraction, the idea for a re-vamp could work. For Body Wars, Inside Out could work as well, but I think it wouldn't be the same. The only other property I could see it "maybe" working for would be "Honey I Shrunk The Kids" which isn't popular anymore.
I barely remember it because I was so young at the time, but my family rode this once. And it was only once because it made my mom sick and she wanted nothing to do with it after that. Plus every other time we did visit over years, it was always during its off season when the pavilion was closed off. Anyways, thanks so much for posting this.
Seeing this reminded me how much I miss this ride, but it also reminded me of the one thing about it I hated...the utterly *boring* queue area! As someone who once had to wait a long time to ride,I remember my disgust at having to stare at those grey-beige walls for Gawd knows HOW long...Star Tours has all those robots, video displays and the fascinating clutter of a repair area...this is supposed to be a fictional medical miniaturization company, and the Imagineers couldn't come up with ANYTHING to make a long wait in line less tedious?
I loved this ride! I took a vacation to Florida about a year after The Wonders of Life Pavilion opened, and I made a bee line for Body Wars as soon as I caught sight of it, and that ride was what started my love of motion simulators. I went on it five times in a row and went back to EPCOT a second time the day before I had to leave to have a few more rides. Never got the chance to go back for a repeat, but those dozen or so times I went on it during that vacation I'll always remember.
I remember when I went with my grandparents about 4 years ago and my grandpa was like “ Let’s go on the body ride! Where is it?” Idk if he even still knows if it’s closed or not but it makes me sad I would love to go with him 😔
(3:57) Is that Colonel Cochran? And the pre-boarding safety instructions shows references not just to Figment or the late 80s WDW logo, but even Honey, I Shrunk the Kids with that helmet the passenger was wearing. I love it.
I'm 33 now but I vividly remember loving this ride... until I looked over to see my Dad drenched in sweat. He ended up fainting. Poor guy! Good memories though...childhood was the best. I must have eventually caught his aversion to the human body because in college I fainted as a professor described the process of giving plasma LOL
I'm 21 now, and have vague memories of the ride. I kinda thought I was crazy 'cause all I could remember was "It was Star Tours, except inside the human body!"
Me too. I remember waiting in line forever because this ride was so packed. Then I remember telling my friends back home how cool the ride was and I couldn't quite explain how a simulator worked. I just told my friends that you really don't move anywhere, but it feels like a roller coster. I wish they still had this ride today. Such a cool part of my memories as a child.
I think it was because the splinter was too gross. Bitch please. It's just a fucking splinter, everybody gets them. SpongeBob had a more disgusting portrayal of splinters than this. If Disney doesn't open this back up and retheme it to Iron Man, base it on that one episode of the '90s cartoon and have the ride be set inside Hawkeye, and try to get Universal to change the contract, I'm giving myself a splinter and not pulling it out until they do.
+dandymooch It was probably filmed when the pavilion was briefly open during its seasonal operation so many guests were unaware, plus it looks like it was filmed at night.
dandymooch the title said this person recorded this video in 2005 which was actually 2 years before it closed. if you think about it that way it makes it more upsetting
That's what people thought it was. But it was because there was no funding. I'd find a sponsor and re-open Body Wars themed to the '90s Iron Man cartoon (Iron Man and Hawkeye aren't even in Universal)
There’s also a famous VFX artist known as Spaz who was recently in a CorridorCrew video and he was working as a lead CG VFX artist at Industrial Light And Magic at the time of that ride’s development so he most likely also worked on that ride as a lead CG VFX artist! :)
The hallways for theEntire ride Q is pretty cool cleaning the ceiling for this hallway along with the monitors and the fancy lying instead of an airport hallway that leads you to the waiting rooms
Seriously, I never got a chance to ride I and now I'm hearing rumors the Wonders of Life building is destroyed? What a shame, I think this ride could get MAJOR hits if they could tune it up and do like they did for star tours. I mean look at it....IT'S STAR TOURS IN THE HUMAN BODY!!! It does seem awesome. Thanks for the video
I saw that Disney is planning on a complete revamp of EPCOT, similar to what was recently done to Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom. The plan is to bring it back to it's original concept of EPCOT Center and away from Epcot Park. I hope it happens, at least they could find something to do with the building.
It lost it's sponsor (MET Life) and no other company would come on board. Disney kept it open during peak seasons for several years before closing it completely. Everything has been walled up and painted over. The building is now used for business meetings, conventions, and the Food & Wine festival. Maybe one day they will find a permanent use for the building but I doubt this attraction will come back.
Another reminder on how that accursed video is the reason Body Wars will never come back. Could you just get timeless looking people? No reason to remind guests splinters were around in 1989 too!
Why was ridership so low? Clearly Disney shuttered Body Wars because it's too expensive to maintain an attraction that doesn't pull guests. But nowadays, the 3 big thrill rides at Epcot (Test Track, Mission Space, and Soarin) are incredibly popular, quickly creating wait times of over an hour at each. I feel like Body Wars could be Epcot's fourth big attraction, because it's basically a rebranded Star Tours. But clearly no one wanted to ride it. Does anyone know the current status of Body Wars?
The first time I went to Disneyland was in 1966 and the last time was in 1980 during which time mickey's toontown and California adventure were being built
So glad I was able to experience i feel bad for anyone who was born after 2000 they will never know what real Disney world was like the rides that are closed now were the best like alien encounter my favorite ride
I agree with most here that they should have left this and crainium command running because they are in outside show buildings and the central hub could still stay open for food and wine and flower/garden. Unfortunately this ride has been canibalized for Star Tours.
With the video of the body in the lungs hearts and brain, and the ruff simulate ride, they nick name it the pukinator. get it. Puke inator (mechain and body and the sinkness that you get on the ride that almost make you puke)
I wonder if this will become commonplace in the future, technology that lets med students shrink down and enter a cadaver or living person to observe injuries, causes of death, and other things. There may be some ethical complications from this, but I have heard of nanotech being developed for medical purposes and I have interacted with a holographic heart when a science teacher had a guest come to their class.
Great video, I always wanted to go on this ride but I never had the chance! This ride is similar to the Star Tours ride at Disneyland California also I had the entire ride to myself just like yours! Just put in the RUclips search box... Star Tours 2004 it's there if your interested, it is real cool to have the ride for yourself, I like your video!
He reserved a seat. You know why people stopped going to WoL? IT'S TOO OUTDATED! IT WAS FUCKING 2005/2006/2007 AND THEY STILL SHOWED '80S CLOTHING, THE '80S WDW LOGO, A FUCKING DEAD IP, AND FIGMENT FROM WHEN HE WAS STILL WITH DREAMFINDER! Not to mention, the captain looks like Marty from Back to the Future, and also the footage in Cranium Command. Forget the '80s comedians. LOOK AT FUCKING ANNIE OR SOMETHING!
I remember riding this as a kid when it first opened. I hated this as it made me nauseous. But dad loved it. Its a pity this is all thats left of the ride.
Thanks for the video! It really brought back some childhood memories. What year was this filmed? The ride film seemed slightly different from what I remember in the 90's.
Even though this would scare the children of my generation, I would have loved to expirince this ride. I came to Disney world the same year that it closed
Yeah, and that's a dead IP now. I fucking hate that video because it's probably one of the biggest reasons Body Wars isn't coming back. It looks too outdated for 2018 standards! If they had to show it, they'd probably do some vaporwave stuff with it. For the Iron Man retheme, they could animate it and have the people look more modern...
and plus when they were creating this attraction they went all the way to make it feel and look realistic Which feels like a real experience through the body It's just the details they put on the screen were very detailed and looks gross but farely amazing
Honey I shrunk the kids was huge around when this ride came out and that was a Disney movie. I remember as a kid, seeing that helmet and getting all excited.
Kyle Cafarelli Actually the ride and movie opened only a few months apart from each other. I think this ride was more inspired by the Fantastic Voyage.
Pretty much the same reason why Horizons closed. The strange thing is, Wonders of Life and Horizons were closed due to their sponsors leaving, but the Imagination pavilion is still open despite the fact that Kodak has stopped sponsoring it.
I'm so thankful that someone thought to record it before it closed for good!
The original thrill ride at EPCOT. It is sad to see it this empty, I worked on this attraction back in 1990. Shortly after it opened it was given the nickname of "The Vomitorium" because so many people got sick on it.
I never got sick on it; neither did my neighbor. However, I did get sick on Tower of Terror!
I remember this ride. I was just a kid and I thought it was real. Screaming to that girl "Swim! C'mon! Get in!" It was such a trippy ride for me. But hey, I'm gonna be a nurse soon, so maybe it inspired me.

Wasn't tinkerbell the original person flying in the body
The look of the organs within the body were incredibly realistic. I didn't realize how much research they did to make things so accurate.
As does Hawkeye's.
:)

this is the ride that got me interested in the human body :) it made me want to be a doctor.
SpongeBob did it for me (the episode "Squidtastic Voyage")
Ya. (And if some people are afraid of the gross human body)

I wish there was a behind-the-scenes video for this. I would love to see how the effects were created considering they were mostly stop motion.

Did this in the late 90s. Remember it being quite rough, but I liked it.

WHAT ABOUT THE SPLINTER
Reminds me of the magic schoolbus
Yeah! That show, along with various computer games I played, got me interested in learning about the human body.
Only we go inside a full-fledged adult here. I just hope it isn't a woman...
i was born in 2002 and I love this ride 14 years later. I didnt RIDE it, but from what i seen i wanna ride now

July 1995 for me! I can agree it's dated now, but even by then we still looked like that.
then how come the star tours chick with the mickey hairdo didn't look so dated by 2010
hijhiysonikku Because Star Wars is timeless.
I guess you're right. I own a shirt like one of the people in the Body Wars safety video is wearing, so I guess they could still show the video today because there's literally nothing different than what people wore in 1989 vs. what people wear in 2018.

I think back in the 90s it was fairly popular. By the time this was shot people were probably unaware it existed.
+oh the feels You wouldn't of been a reserved one.
dude this scared the shit out of me. i must have been no more than 7 years old
Very clever and unique attraction. Wish it was still open.
I remember this ride, and the show Cranium of Command. Why did Epcot have to remove them?!
Silver Arrow Because they were gross.
That's what people thought it was. But it was because there was no funding. I'd find a sponsor and re-open Body Wars themed to the '90s Iron Man cartoon (Iron Man and Hawkeye aren't even in Universal)
This is AMAZING footage
There’s also a famous VFX artist known as Spaz who was recently in a CorridorCrew video and he was working as a lead CG VFX artist at Industrial Light And Magic at the time of that ride’s development so he most likely also worked on that ride as a lead CG VFX artist! :)
Totally forgot he was alone; that was the Real Epcot, science awesomeness.
The hallways for theEntire ride Q is pretty cool cleaning the ceiling for this hallway along with the monitors and the fancy lying instead of an airport hallway that leads you to the waiting rooms
Chuck and Josh on the "Stuff You Should Know" podcast lead me here. 😉
I really wish this was still open. I wonder if there's any hope of getting it redone/reopened.
This looks exactly like star tours we need to get the pavilion reopened
Seriously, I never got a chance to ride I and now I'm hearing rumors the Wonders of Life building is destroyed? What a shame, I think this ride could get MAJOR hits if they could tune it up and do like they did for star tours. I mean look at it....IT'S STAR TOURS IN THE HUMAN BODY!!! It does seem awesome. Thanks for the video
Man I miss the Wonders of Life. Wish they'd bring it back...
Me, too! This, Cranium Command, and the bicycle thing.
They're doing something in that building now. The exterior got a new paint job. Hopefully they're not just making it part of Groot's Energy Adventure.
Then they could serve chili dogs outside.
No, make it an Iron Man themed attraction where you go inside Hawkeye
Keith Dean United Healthcare could sponsor.
I know exactly why this attraction isn't coming back. Hint, it's five minutes and thirty seconds or so into the video.
And yes, these are the same exact ride vehicles now used for the newer Star Tours.
Anyone saw the Figment hat at 5:41?
Jackson Williams lol
Another reminder on how that accursed video is the reason Body Wars will never come back. Could you just get timeless looking people? No reason to remind guests splinters were around in 1989 too!
Figments imagination was my favorite ride when I was kid, I even had a figment doll from one of the gift shops. I was heartbroken when they closed it
He is from epcot
Wouldn't be surprised if they reopen this ride but retheme it to pixar's new movie Inside Out.
Baby Jesus That's actually a great idea, since it's getting a lot of praise from psychologists as an excellent depiction of human emotions.
koopie brain hurt
Baby Jesus Actually, the movie's about emotions, not the human body.
Baby Jesus I'd love to see that as a ride
The area should be something for Inside Out, and it could also show Baymax from Big Hero 6.
Center seat back row- great choice👌🏼
Blood cells and plant cells are generally the same size, how come you don't see the cells in the splinter
Great quality video for something forgotten so long ago
Why was ridership so low? Clearly Disney shuttered Body Wars because it's too expensive to maintain an attraction that doesn't pull guests. But nowadays, the 3 big thrill rides at Epcot (Test Track, Mission Space, and Soarin) are incredibly popular, quickly creating wait times of over an hour at each. I feel like Body Wars could be Epcot's fourth big attraction, because it's basically a rebranded Star Tours. But clearly no one wanted to ride it. Does anyone know the current status of Body Wars?
spaceye it’s closed doesn’t exist anymore. The simulators are gone but the que is still intact
thanks for the upload!
kinda sad seeing the ride so empty in its last days before shutting down. =\
I never got to try it but it looks fun...
The queue reminds me of a jetway, honestly.
The first time I went to Disneyland was in 1966 and the last time was in 1980 during which time mickey's toontown and California adventure were being built
No the new Star Tours is still in Hollywood Studios. It's just a face-lift of the older ride.
Where are all of the people?
Tyler Morris That's how it was towards the end, always empty
Yes
i remember this ride from when i was little, but i couldnt remember where it was from XD
I haven't seen this since I was a kid
With the video of the body in the lungs hearts and brain, and the ruff simulate ride, they nick name it the pukinator. get it. Puke inator (mechain and body and the sinkness that you get on the ride that almost make you puke)
Resurgence Gaming The Vomitorium, actually.
Reminds me of the movie “Fantastic Voyage!”
It's like star tours!
Michael Carlson Jr It's the same simulator cabin called the atlas. The only difference is the simulation and movie. Too bad it closed. :(
The the vehicles are exactly the same
body wars came in second after star tours
Dark Doge X-s Tech Star Tours came first at Disneyland.
@@MarthaRoseQuartz thanks for correcting me
Body wars is a sister attraction to star tours
Body wars came second
I remember this back all the way in 1997. But who is the grown man going to Disney alone and filming? Kind of strange.
Great video, I always wanted to go on this ride but I never had the chance!
This ride is similar to the Star Tours ride at Disneyland California also I had the entire ride to myself just like yours!
Just put in the RUclips search box...
Star Tours 2004
it's there if your interested, it is real cool to have the ride for yourself, I like your video!
Must have been a slow day at Epcot. He was the only one on there?! I feel sorry for him!
The waning years of Wonders of Life.
I realized. The reason he's riding it all by himself contributed very heavily to the death of the whole pavilion.
era muy bueno esta ride ....... was very good this ride
I dint get to ride this because it was sesonal and I went in September during its closed season I wish I rode though
So it's basically the same thing as Star Tours?
How did you get on it when it was completely empty?
He must've gone late at night or something,,,
Because the attraction was always empty
A lot of people stopped riding this amazing attraction
Yeah i got dizzy on this ride and my co ordination could not keep up with the motion going all over the place!!
I remember riding this as a kid when it first opened. I hated this as it made me nauseous. But dad loved it.
Its a pity this is all thats left of the ride.
The headset at @5:56 is from "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" as an inside joke....
omg I completely forgot about this ride I think I was 7 or 8 when I rode it
Thanks for the video! It really brought back some childhood memories.
What year was this filmed? The ride film seemed slightly different from what I remember in the 90's.
No, it was cut around 2000.
Star tours?
This makes my chest hurt...
Even though this would scare the children of my generation, I would have loved to expirince this ride.
I came to Disney world the same year that it closed
It wouldn't scare them
You were the only rider? That saddens me greatly
Thanks for this!
Did anyone notice the Wayne Szalinski easter egg?
Yeah, and that's a dead IP now. I fucking hate that video because it's probably one of the biggest reasons Body Wars isn't coming back. It looks too outdated for 2018 standards! If they had to show it, they'd probably do some vaporwave stuff with it. For the Iron Man retheme, they could animate it and have the people look more modern...
I would be scared to ride that by myself idk why just me.
This was here when I was younger, and I never rode it?!?
wow disney... trying to scare the crap out of little kids basically saying "LOOK KIDS! THIS IS YOUR BODY!"
They weren't trying to
and plus when they were creating this attraction they went all the way to make it feel and look realistic
Which feels like a real experience through the body
It's just the details they put on the screen were very detailed and looks gross but farely amazing
5:56 Did Wayne Szalinski get on the ride?
XD
Honey I shrunk the kids was huge around when this ride came out and that was a Disney movie. I remember as a kid, seeing that helmet and getting all excited.
Kyle Cafarelli Actually the ride and movie opened only a few months apart from each other. I think this ride was more inspired by the Fantastic Voyage.
The reason why they shut it down because whoever was sponsoring it quit sponsoring it.
Pretty much the same reason why Horizons closed. The strange thing is, Wonders of Life and Horizons were closed due to their sponsors leaving, but the Imagination pavilion is still open despite the fact that Kodak has stopped sponsoring it.
Metropolitan Life Insurance sponsored it.

@@YuukiTakemoto1996 you aint weird as me

Is this ride still in operation?
TheDarkLink7 No
Loved this ride! It made me sick every time.
