  • We've visited a lot of Terraria mods, but for this video, we're going to tell you a short story about who was behind Terraria modding back in the day, Surfpup, the owner and coder of the first modding API ever "tConfig," so let's take a look at this story.

Since you are talking about people who made modding API’s, I would also like to nominate the entire tModLoader team as well (JavidPack/Jopojelly, BlushieMagic, Chicken Bones, Jofairden, Mirsario, Solxanich)

I remember first seeing TConfig and the phoenix boss fight back then. While I was smart enough at the time to understand installing it (I was still young at the time.), it really got me into Terraria and eventually the modding community once TModLoader came out. If it hadn’t been for Surfpup creating tConfig, Modded Terraria as we know it might be entirely different from what it is now.

This reminded me of one core fact of the state of Terraria modding - more often than not, it's just a bunch of rag-tag amateurs developing for no other reason than just making whatever they want. At any moment, some kind of hardship could befall a mod developer, or even a developer for certain mod loaders in general, and ultimately kill any progress on them moving forwards.
In this, it reminded me, by extension, of why I love the TerraCom. Putting aside a lot of the toxicity that emanates from certain sects of the community, it's just a bunch of big nerds existing only to support an amazing game they really enjoy. And I think there's some real beauty to be found in that.

It's upsetting to first hear about Surfpup's brain aneurysm as an OG modded Terraria player. I felt so lamented for the dude, and I do consider him as a "legendary modder" myself. He is an amazing guy, I must say. Good work on the video!
