  • In Todays video we will be going over how to achieve a softly shaded area with a Mag needle. A few things will help you out a lot One being to use a large mag needle as the larger the better when it comes to keeping things smooth. Next you want to have a decent understanding of your grey wash. And Three ensuring you keep a consistent needle depth through out the shading process. This video alone wont explain everything but this video combined with my other videos regarding this Soft shading topic should help guide you in the right direction. I still have a long way to go when it comes to soft smooth shading but I wanted to share what I have learned so far and more will come with time.
    Hope you all enjoyed the video and if you did give it up a thumbs up and consider subscribing!!

    Very helpful as always! I've been scared to use the bigger mags and in turn I've ended up with the "streaks" definitely going to practice with fake skin. I did my first attempt at a realism over the weekend and paying attention to you and your tips have helped. It turned out really well and had some people have that "wow" moment . I kinda amazed myself. And you have helped me get there man so I greatly greatly appreciate you.

    Something else that can help with smoother grey is a shorter stroke machine. 2.5mm stroke works very well for soft grey. I love my bishop wand shader though so I find that I don’t use my others as much as I probably should. Keep up the good work man!!

    Thanks for the tutorial. Your speech is fine, I understand you no problem. I did an apprenticeship back in 75' and today is totally different than it used to be. I want to do Quality work and Big pieces but my training I am finding out was not anywhere near what I really needed to know. I am not good at the drop thing I have trouble making the shade I want so I ordered pre mixed Black and grey inks from Industry INK. I wonder if I am making a mistake relying on their mix. I learned a lot from just watching you in this video so I will get better at mixing in the future, but I will experiment a LOT on Fake skin. My BIG problem is depth, I know that I am going too light because the fake skin I am using, 3mm Real skin brand, always makes the black look grey it's either the skin, the ink, or I am not going deep enough. I wish I could show you a pic. I do a LOT of drawing and have learned how to shade with a pencil really well and I attempted to use my technique on paper to the fake skin and I got bad results, way too light. How do I get over that fear of going too deep and causing blow out? I have been " Riding the tube" so to speak and I am afraid it's too shallow. What length should I have the needle extend from the tube ? Thanks for your time and knowledge I really like watching you work. I can use any help I can get and You Tube I have found has a lot of varying techniques that confuse me. I am a cancer patient doing this to keep my mind off my issues and tattooing has always been a part of my life I want to do work on people before I die.

    Hi Art how are you doing. Sorry I know this is a year old but I have a bishop wand shader which I’ve had for going on about year and a half now. I’ve already sent it back in for a repair once when it stopped working in under 100 hours and I really do love the machine. It took a few months to get it back from Bishop but when I did, I was excited to start using it again. The problem I’m having now is the machine doesn’t seem to want to fire up and push anything bigger than an 11 mag. When I throw a 15 or 13 even into the machine, it won’t start up and I have to turn it on and then push the cartridge into the machine, I really don’t like doing this as I prefer to use a power supply and a foot pedal still. With the cost, the shipping for the repairs and the repair itself I am into this machine for about $1300 now and I think it’s far too much to spend on something that isn’t gonna properly function. You’re using a 19 mag in the same machine with a battery supply, I was going to go buy musotoku power supply and keep a steady 5 A ready but spending $700 plus canadian to make this $1300 machine run just seems like more money wasted. i’ve literally only run the machine probably four times since receiving it from the repair shop at Bishop because I’m just thoroughly disappointed in its performance.

    great video Dave! I have been watching and learning from your videos over the last two years. I started my journey picking up a machine for fun, playing on fake skin. next thing you know, im tattooing my own legs. couple posts onto my Instagram and suddenly others are hitting me up for some tattoos. TLDR; after many tattoos and practice. I talked my way into a shop, where I increased my clientele tremendously. Now I am able to make a living from tattooing and haven't looked back since. thank you.

    So I get the using the largest mag possible - that has worked well for me (and I appreciate the level of depth you explain it and show it here). But I recently did a black and gray rose with stem that in total was less than 3in tall. I ended up using a 12 9 RS and much thinner mixtures of black-to-water.
    I am super new to tattooing and am only using myself (and occasionally fake skin) to tattoo on.
    I guess my question is, if I can't fit a M or CM in a piece, did I do the most efficient thing for soft shading, or is there a better way?

    What if the area is too large or in a shape that makes it too difficult to cover the entire area all the way end to end in one sweeping pass like you are doing in the “brick?
    How do you join passes seamlessly without creating an area that is darker because of an overlap when you do another pass?
    All my attempts to saturate a large area or a complicated shape with one cohesive mono-tonal fill have failed. As hard as I try to make it consistent, I end up with a slightly splotchy fill.

    Great video man. I've done the same technique with my work and it comes out nicely. But in theory, wouldn't you want to start with the darker tones and then do the lighter tones, so that there are less passes over the skin and less trauma? Is there a reason you start with the lighter tones?

      Dark to light is more of a stencil issue for me. I finish as I go. So the dark parts, especially full black go in first, to capture the stencil. Then I’ll do both light to dark or dark to light

    I am currently trying shading and I get the patchy effect, not smooth at all. So in order to resolve that you would recommend using bigger magnums?

    I’m not sure if it’s the fake skin but I was using one drop of black, barely sinking the needles, and increased hand speed but it’s still coming out too dark. I was struggling a lot with blending. Any ideas?

    Do you use both sides of reelskin? The ones I got have different feel on each side.. one flat and other side shiney.. stencil doesn't stick to Shiney side. Thnx

    • @ArtSomething
      @ArtSomething  2 года назад +2

      I dont use the shiney side i use the other side from that. Yeah much harder trying to work the shiney side and like you said getting the stencil to stick is very difficult as well.

  • @WhiskeyPop

    My mentor tells me if I did multiple passes like that I would be overworking the skin. Do you see overworked skin from these techniques?

    • @ArtSomething
      @ArtSomething  2 года назад +1

      No the skin is not overworked due to 2 things here: 1 the type of needle being used (bugpin) smaller diameter needle less trauma. 2. the machine im using has a soft hit and bogs down in the skin meaning not as hard of a hitting machine. If I had the same technique with the wand packer it would make for a much more damaged result possibly over worked skin. if using the packer you would have to adjust fire and apply a little less pressure and or maybe a pass or so less. Again you will learn to read the skin and know when its red or over worked. I hope this makes sense.

      No I mean bugpin needles, with a long taper would be preferred for this type of shading. Short taper would be used for packing color.
